The Doctor and the Heretic and Other Stories by Andy Nowicki

After giving his first novel Considering Suicide a disappointing review three weeks ago, Andy Nowicki sent me a copy of this, the one book of his I HAVEN’T read yet. And I liked it. As I said in that review, Nowicki’s is best when he’s writing in the novella or short story format, and Doctor is nothing if not some of his best work.

The title story is most interesting in that it represents a (partial) departure from Nowicki’s usual milieu. The plot concerns psychiatrist Carol Golden, a widow living the depressive, empty life that most single middle-aged women live, who unexpectedly falls in love with one of her patients. It’s somewhat of a challenge for writers to craft convincing characters who are the opposite sex than themselves, but Nowicki clears this hurdle easily, depicting Carol’s thoughts and desires with his usual keen eye and morbid sense of humor:

All at once his face resolved itself, became unblurred in her mind; he stood above her, behind her, beside her; seized her forcefully; she resisted him at first, then succumbed. He flipped up her skirt, pushed open her legs and then she felt him deep within her self, her soul, her very being; she felt herself pulled to the very margins of her own space, stretched like an elastic band, ever so tight, but not quite snapping…

And then, after an almost intolerable interval, Carol finally did snap; she gasped furiously and clutched at the space between her legs as it dilated wetly, and then, for the second time in the last few hours, the floodgates opened, and her inner fire found explosive, volcanic release.

The doctor groaned and writhed violently as her body gushed crystalline treasure all over her sheets, in such copious quantity that it frightened her. She wondered if she might die, here in her plush bed, surrounded by all her worldly possessions, alone; expiring in terrible ecstasy as her sticky, fluidic essence spurted out, leaving behind a lifeless shell, a pretty, middle-aged corpse lying in a thick puddle of spent pleasure.

She muttered his name once aloud, before dissolving into the deepest sleep of her life, a repose barely distinguishable from sweet extinction.

The “Other Stories” in the book are just as good. “Tears of the Damned” is an alternate history tale in which Dylan Klebold, instead of perpetuating the Columbine killings, grew up, became a normal adult, married and had a family. “Autobiography of a Violent Soul” has a similar premise and feel to Considering Suicide, but is way more entertaining because it’s more crisply written and only goes on for a quarter of the length.

The only criticism of significance I can think of isn’t related to Doctor specifically, but to Nowicki’s body of work as a whole. His protagonists are all cut from the same cloth — self-pitying losers, self-immolating, isolated from the world, and Catholic — and are starting to get a little repetitive. Despite having a woman protagonist, even “The Doctor and the Heretic” suffers from this problem — Fenton Balonsky, Carol Golden’s patient and lover, is straight out of the Nowicki canon of alienated Catholic loserdom.

I’m not going to bash Nowicki for writing what he knows best — ultimately, that’s all we writers can do. But one of my biggest criticisms of mainstream literature is its incessant navel-gazing, with authors unwilling or afraid of exploring new waters outside of the tiny kiddie pools they splash around in. All Jhumpi Lahiri ever writes about is Indian immigrants acclimating to life in the U.S., while all Gary Shteyngart ever writes about is nerdy Russian Jews with hygiene problems falling in love with ethnic women who dominate them. One novel of that stuff is funny, two novels is tolerable, three novels is just plain laziness.

The Doctor and the Heretic and Other Stories is a great read and well worth the money, but I’d caution Andy — you can only play the same song for so long before the audience gets sick of it and heads for the exits.

Readers will recall that back in March, IMF landed in the crosshairs of the Southern Poverty Law Center, along with several other “misogynistic” sites including The Spearhead, A Voice for Men and Roosh V. Despite what the residents of parochial backwaters like Australia think, being targeted by the SPLC is in fact a very big deal, since their “Intelligence Reports” (what In Mala Fide was cited in) are distributed to all law enforcement agencies in these United States. Meaning that IMF is now being watched by some Very Powerful People.

The SPLC has responded to our response, with Arthur Goldwag, the author of the original report, filing this article for the SPLC blog:

“Piggybacking on the two minutes’ hate against Limbaugh,” the National Review Online sarcastically declared, the “clueless commissars at the Southern Policy Law Center” have “found a new arena of hate groups, comparable to neo-Nazis and the skinheads: the ‘manosphere’ of misogynist web sites.” The website In Mala Fide was defiantly proud: “Before, our enemies ignored us. Now, they point their gnarled, disgusting fingers at us, sputtering syllables of disapproval.”

Goldwag, mind if I call you Snerdling? It seems more appropriate. Okay Snerdling, you’re fuckin’ right I’m proud. Apparently, you failed to notice that the entire Internet thinks the SPLC is a joke now:

Well, now the Southern Poverty Law Center isn’t just going after organized (and disorganized) racism, they are expanding their mission to fight creepy guys who pick up women.

In their expanded “Misogyny Report,” the SPLC lists a number of blogs they deem to have bad attitudes about women. Some of these are by “pick-up-artists.”

A few of the quotes they cite in this important report are truly piggish. But they don’t look like crimes.

The SPLC held up for ridicule one D.C. blogger for saying of American girls that he “made it a point to f#*k them and never call again.”

Not rape. Just being a jerk.

You’ve bitten off far more than you can chew here. You’ve antagonized the fastest-growing and most relevant movement/entity in America and the Western world. With every sling and arrow, the manosphere swells in size, a voice for the most powerful and deadliest force on Earth — the disenfranchised young man. Or as a wise man once said, “it’s only bad publicity if they spell your name wrong.”

Speaking of which, Snerdling also writes:

But we did call out specific examples of misogyny and the threat, overt or implicit, of violence.

I’ve made threats of violence? Leftists always pull this game — they never give specific examples, they just make blanket condemnations based on their “feelings.” As IMF contributor Matt Forney pointed out earlier this week, feminists have made actual, real death threats against me and Chad Daring, but the SPLC has nothing to say about them. Were I to pull anything like what they did, I wouldn’t be here, I’d be in a prison cell getting interrogated by the FBI.

But the beauty of what we’re doing in the blogosphere is that ideas can’t be killed. You can jail or murder a man, but ideas persist. If totalitarian slime like the SPLC got their way and I were to be silenced tomorrow, another man would take my place. Snerdling and his compadres are the vanguards of a dying institution, desperately jamming their thumbs in the dike to keep the truth from drowning them. They’re on the losing side of history. Their shrieks are the shrieks of the dying and damned.

Chad Daring/Chef in Jeans‘ article “The No Fat Chicks Challenge” is the gift that keeps on giving. Yesterday evening, it was linked at Who Needs Feminism?, the Tumblelog where fat-assed she-beasts and big-titted blubberboys gather to strike vicious blows against the patriarchy:

What’s funny, beyond the obvious sight of over-pampered shut-ins hyperventilating over Internet articles, is that Chad’s article is pretty mild by IMF standards. His argument was simply that men should not sleep with fat girls because of their fatness. In other words, he was saying that we guys should leave fat girls alone to their Haagen-Dazs and tears. Despite this, half of the haters left comments like, “Well, if you don’t like fat women, don’t date them.”

Uh, no shit. That’s EXACTLY what we’re doing.

These histrionic little girls are full of it. They don’t want fat acceptance — they want to FORCE men to be attracted to their endless rolls of fat and their cheesy crotch creases. Considering Suicide by Andy Nowicki

As promised, here’s what I have to say about Nowicki’s first novel — it’s okay. Merely okay. Granted, it’s better than 99% of the crap out there, but by the standards of The Columbine Pilgrim and Under the Nihil, it doesn’t measure up.

Considering Suicide is an epistolary novel concerning an unnamed narrator who’s contemplating ending it all. That’s my first problem with it — I hate Hate HATE epistolary novels. Under the Nihil has a similar style, but Suicide is Nowicki’s first novel and it shows. The book reads like a deranged rant, which is appropriate concerning the subject matter, but it gets a little boring.

My second problem with Considering Suicide is that it’s too long. It’s not that long — only about 210 pages — but Nowicki’s best working in the short story or novella format. The book seems to drag.

Despite all this, Considering Suicide is a great, funny read. If you’ve enjoyed Nowicki’s other books, you’ll be right at home here:

It’s really nothing less than rape, this treatment. The television industry gets inside you, tricks you into thinking you’re a part of their scene. They use you to sell products and throw you away afterwards. As if you were an unwanted fetus, a conceptus after the rape. They: your seducer and killer. At once fucking you and aborting you.

Of course, those poor fat chicks are probably excited to have someone pay attention to them at all, even if they are just being used. They are flattered to be raped at all. Having despaired of ever being rape victim material, they are only too happy to lay back and enjoy it.
