Our youngest daughter is not as keen as her elder sister when it comes to having her photo taken. To my surprise, this morning she obliged without hesitation. I asked her to come down to our living room and have her sit on the sofa and read a book while I take some photos of her where there was great ambient light that I couldn't pass. Her big sister helped in holding a reflector for those nice catch lights.

Another beautiful, fast-growing kid like her sister. Taking good looks from their mom.

Something Is Brewing

Last night on my way home, I passed by a convenience store looking for something to drink with my expected dinner. While looking around the beverage area, I saw this bottle of beer I don't recall ever seeing before. It had an interesting label and I thought it would be a good opportunity to photograph it and make something nice. As I continued on my way, my mind was thinking of how to make this more interesting then an "Aha!" moment occurred.

When I got home, I did some research on how to do what I wanted to do while I ate dinner. Didn't exactly found what I was looking for but there were some very helpful stuff in the Internet. After filling up my tummy with food and my mind with ideas, I started to set up and as usual, I do a test shot which I posted last night which is also shown below.

Something's Brewing...

My setup has been fairly consistent on how I generally light my beer and liquor bottles. Most of my previous shots would involve white or colored (with gradient) backgrounds. For this session, I've always wanted to do something with dark or black background.

Now that's the tricky part and that's why I stay away from doing it but last night I had no excuse. I had to make it work or else I could have stopped after I got the image above after four or five shots.

I pressed on to get what I want.

The final image I had in mind, is a combination of different experiences that I was able to write about here in this blog. How to put it all together in one shot was a real challenge.

First, I had to consider my limited gear and how I can maximize it. For the image above, it used all my lights which is two. One light served as a main light and the other as a background light. The background light will also serve as a source of light so the interior of the bottle so it will be lit and make it translucent. So that's how the above image was lit.

The background of the final image that I wanted should be dark or black. Easy solution -- don't light the background but this will mean I will also lose the light I need for the interior of the bottle. I could do it in post processing by combining two images and masking out the darkened bottle. It's an option but I didn't want to go that way as there's another element in the shot that I wanted to add -- smoke, steam, or fog.

This element needs to be lit from behind so the particles of smoke will bounce of light and the dark background will help it be visible and be captured in the camera. So again, I can still do it in post processing by combining one to three images: 1) beer bottle, 2) dark background, and 3) smoke. Again, I wanted to minimize post processing and wanted some thing like I have produced below:

I did some post processing but was mostly to tweak the smoke elements of the shot. I could have been satisfied with an actual one shot but wanted more control over the uncontrollable motion of the smoke.

Something To Celebrate

In one of the last few days of Dec 2014, I was able to do one last product shot that I can say is one of my best creative product shots. Shown on the left is a teaser photo that I posted sometime January 2015 that can also be seen in this link.

When my wife bought and surprised me with this beer, I was very happy and I remember having this smile in my face I can't wipe off. This is because I have something to photograph and I have something to drink after -- Cheers!

Every time there's something new around is always a good opportunity to get some product shots. First, they're somewhat at their "best" look and if it's beer and liquor it's best while it has still contents.

Going back to the image, it took me several days to think about how to photograph this beer bottle. Since it was the holidays and the spirit of celebration was in the air, I was aiming to have something to get that feeling in the photo at the end.

The teaser image on it's own is good in my opinion and can be used as is. It's simple but I wasn't getting the celebratory feeling in this image so I had to slowly build on it.

I had to pull off some tricks off the bag in order to achieve the final image I wanted to have. First, I have to add some elements in to the composition.

Before checking the final image below, let's walk through the thought process and try to imagine the final photo. I thought of adding a glass filled with beer would look nice. Making you already want to drink it I think is a good way to express that celebratory feeling.

Also, the background was plain and again it's not currently giving me that feeling I wanted to get. I thought that a set of bokeh on the background could break it and make the final image interesting.

I have the glass and extra beer but was stumped on how to get bokeh on the background. I did though found a way to do it and I'll leave it for you to find out how I managed. Additionally, the final image that I decided to use was with additional pearl-like orbs I borrowed from my kids. Yes, some of the kids toys helped the final image.

Moisturize

While I was preparing the set for the Slim Bottle shot in my previous entry, I came across this bottle of lotion that looked new and thought it would be a nice subject for another product shoot.

Photographing this bottle was relatively easy if not for the shiny irregular cap that reflected everything in the room. I was having a hard time getting rid of those reflection in camera and just decided to clean it in post.

Moonlight Path by Bath & Body Works

This bottle of lotion was similarly lit by the other beer and wine bottles I've photographed except this is a bit flat and is not translucent so there is no light passing through the bottle itself.

I have managed to have a repeatable setup on most bottle or cylindrical objects. In this case I had to do a small change on how to light it since it has a broader face that needs to be lit.

I used a water spill to indicate moisture instead of water beads like I use on beer bottles.

Looking forward for more similar products to work on in the near future.

Slim Bottle

I received a gift and once again it's a great opportunity to make something beautiful. I've got a tricky bottle situation - dark bottle and shiny lettering.

Times like these having several light sources to light the different parts of the product would have made this shot easier. Since I'm limited to only two lights, I had to do with what I have and do the rest in post.

I wanted a shot glass with this photo but the lack of if made me pick some leaves and use it as something to accompany the bottle. Until now I still don't know why I prefer to have those leaves in the image than without it. I guess it would be too simple with any "garnish" in the image.

Would you say those leaves are distraction or something that adds to the image?

What Time Is It?

I have been thinking how to shoot a watch out of the ordinary and this what came out of that pondering.

I rolled this craft foam and secured it with the watch so it won't unroll. Then suspended the setup and placed a black card board below. Lit the watch and the background and there you go!

It's like looking at your watch and asking what time is it. Tried also a new signature but it looks to complicated. Will revert back to the old signature.

Great or Lucky?

After a couple of weeks without taking photos, I decided to take some tonight. I jumped out of bed and grabbed my usual gear. I setup my subject and gear and took some test shots. Eight clicks then it's a wrap! Batteries went empty. Both my batteries drained out of their power.

I reviewed the few test shots that I got. I was able to select two shots out of the eight as usable. One of them is shown below. You know which one is the other from the series of thumbnails above I guess.

Third Bottle

I'm lucky that I am still sober after this third bottle of liquor. I'm in the momentum to shoot bottles of liquor due to the lighting setup that I did for the bottle of rakia in "Stress Reliever" article that I recently did.

I have applied here some of the things I learned from the past two recent sessions and they are:

1. Stress Reliever - change the background color while shooting and
2. Second Look - position of the main light to be on the left side of the camera

So, changing the background while shooting or taking the photo saved me a lot of time to do it in post production. It's also better to do it this way especially for dark bottles like this bottle of wine. There's a slim chance that the light from the background would cast on the liquor. It would be a case-to-case basis and I'll leave that to your experimentation.

The color of light on the background was done by "gelling" the flash head. I used an amber-orange piece of gel. Another piece of DIY presented in "Flash Gels And New Shoes".

Positioning the main light on the left side of the bottle created a more natural feel to it rather than having the main light on the right side. I placed a reflector on the right side that can be roughly seen on the reflection of the bottle.

I'm looking forward into shooting more bottles of liquor when I can find and borrow them. I think there'll be a lot especially that the holidays is fast approaching.

Now, the search for new bottles is on!

Second Look

Recently, I shot a bottle of Rakia from Bulgaria (Stress Reliever) which proved to be really tricky to shoot. I reused the light setup to take another take on the vodka bottle that I shot a few months back when I was "Reviving The Kit" lens.

Stress Reliever

Looking back at my archives, it's been awhile since I last did something and wrote something that involved photography. These past few weekends, I have been a little busy with it again and it started with the photo below. Click on "Read more >>" below for more details about the shot.

Rakia

It is a bottle of Rakia made from plum that came from the head of our team at work. He gave this to me when I came and visited our office in Sofia, Bulgaria. Though it has remained unopened and it will I think until the holidays.

The photo above proved to be challenging and it took two sessions of tinkering to get the shot. The first session was a total disaster in my opinion and wasn't able to get any usable image. The problem that I faced during that time was how to light the bottle from behind. Initially, I wanted to have a black background. So, I pointed a flash directly at the back of the bottle and got uneven lighting as can be seen below. I know it's possible but I will still have to find out how to do it.

I didn't really liked the way it turned out. It led me to check out Alex Koloskov's tutorials again and this tutorial helped a lot. I did it slightly different as the bottle I am trying to shoot is very different from what was in the tutorial.

So the black background is out of the picture as of the moment and a gradient background based on the tutorial is in. The flash is now pointed towards the background with a slight tilt upwards to achieve that gradient background. I switch positions of the main light and the reflector as can be seen also below that made the bottle face have a cleaner look.

As shown in the photo above, the background is actually greyish/grayish. Initially, I considered it good enough but during post, I decided to change it to blue.

For a side-by-side look of the original background and the new background. I couldn't say if I gelled it with blue, it would have casted or not that hue back into the liquor. I will have to check that next time.

So, why the title? Stress at work is high and doing this has project has added to that stress but as a colleague of mine put it -- it's good stress. So the bad stress has been replaced by good stress and in a way, it relieved me of the stress after seeing the final output.

Reviving The Kit

It's been more than three years since I replaced my kit lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS) due to busted AF function. I rarely use it right now and usually I resort to it when I do macro photography via reverse ring or tube extensions.

I tried to use it as the primary lens for my project this weekend and tried to check and see how it still performs on product photography that I have been doing for several weekends now.

So far so good for the Toblerone shot if I may say.

My sweet tooth seems to crave for more chocolates and I found more and ate one in the process.

After Eight

After that minty-chocolate stuff, I found a bottle of Vodka and it was a good thing that there was lemon to include in this shot.

Too bad no drinking buddy that night but will be saving it for someday.

Those were the shots from the kit lens. It ain't bad after all I believe. What do you think? The only remark I could say with it is that even on MF mode, the focusing is very tricky as it is very wobbly and tends to get out of focus with minute changes or movement.

I still happy with the results with the kit lens. It would have been a more productive shoot if a better lens was used I think.

Product photography with the kit lens is still possible.

Flash Gels And New Shoes

Recently my wife and my kids gave me a new pair of shoes for Father's Day. Anything new is a good opportunity for some product shots as the subjects are still in their best condition. It is also a good chance to try something new, experiment with some stuff, and practice photography.

Thank you to them for fueling me with these.

So what is this something new and some stuff? They are, as the title suggest, flash gels. This can be used to add or change color of your backgrounds especially if you have a white background.

For this quick project, I've decided to use a green gel for the background but didn't have any green gel. I have an orange gel which was a DIY flash gel I made several years ago when I started experimenting with flash. So I went the DIY route for the green flash gel also. As these gels are intended for adding color to the background, I wasn't very particular to the hue of the color.

I created these gels from printing the color I intend to have on an inkjet-printable acetate that is used for overhead projector (OHP) presentations before Powerpoint presentations arrived.

As the image shown on the left, the orange and green have been cut to the size of the flash head. I do this so if I intend to use a diffuser cup or other light modifier with this gel I can do so with ease. As I have other DIY stuff for my flash, I have considered how to adapt them to one another. The blue and purple have not been cut yet as I don't have the need for them as of the moment.

Also on the left will be the image how it is attached to the flash head. It is held by the small flap by built-in diffuser then taped below.

The orange gel is kept on top of the flash head as seen also in the image. That is where my gels are stored -- together with the flash unit, taped and ready for the next use.

Now that I have my green gel printed, cut, and taped. It was time to shoot the new shoes. On this project as well, I used another DIY light modifier called a grid. Basically this also attached in front of the flash head that controls how the light is thrown off. I have two sets of these -- a one- and a two-inch thick grid. The thicker the narrower the light output as you'll see in the next images. I will write up on this grid thing next time.

The green gel was chosen as the shoes has some green in it and I wanted the background to complement the subject. I used the living room area for this project. I was only able to produce two images for this project.

Here's another image that I was able to create using the green gel and grid but this time6 with the one-inch thick but bigger.

During this project, I've learned that the power of the flash will determine the saturation of the color being thrown off by the flash unit.

High Power = Lighter color
Low Power = Darker color

Not only the flash power but also the distance of the flash from the background being lit. The above-shown images, the flash was quite close to the wall thus the effect of a white to green gradient background. I did like the effect on the background.

Project Glassware

There's a craze going on with glassware specifically about glass jars for preserving foods for jams, juices, etc. and so I've decided to shoot some and try to ride the band wagon.

"Ball MASON" jar

These transparent objects looks easy to shoot but I learned that it is really tricky specially when shot on a white background. They'll either blend into the background or reflect light if they're shiny.

The above jar has a lot of decors on the glass making it hard to isolate the written words "Ball MASON" that I like to highlight. I have tried several lighting setup using two speedlites only and lots of black and white card boards. The above photo is so far the best setup that I did.

A little behind the scenes of the jar shot. The jar photo at the top is almost straight out of the camera image. I did some WB (White Balance) correction and some sharpening. I was shooting on our dining table by the way and the white background is a styrofoam.

I reused the same setup on the next following images but varying the front light's power.

The lighting setup didn't change except for the glassware. About 80-85% of the shots were test shots for the jar shot. I managed to shoot a total of about 110 images including one non-glass subject which I gulped during the post-processing of the images and I ended up with these posted images.

I slightly changed the lighting setup on the "Mountain Dew" shot by making the lights closer to the subject.

The Dream Car

My youngest daughter fancies the same car as I do. :)

Minimal post production: white balance correction, some highlight recovery and a little polishing on the car. Star burst on headlamps and and flare are on-cam.

This is a 15-second exposure shot so I can register those weak led headlamps on the car.

Gel Balls and Auto-enhance Fail

Here another personal product shot project I worked on showcasing a watch and some gel balls or water gels used in plants about two weeks ago I think. I finished cleaning the image up about early this week only and had some fail moment with auto-enhance feature in my favorite image repository.

I was so frustrated that after I uploaded the image to my favorite image repository, the colors after I processed it was totally different. The reason for the frustration was not just about the colors but also due to the fact that I spent a lot of time cleaning the image up. Just compare the two photos below.

If you look closely on the "Before" photo, there's a lot of white specks of dust, some bubbles, and a few scratches compared to the "After" photo. So when the cleaning was done, I was excited to see how it will look when uploaded. That's when I encountered the fail which I just found out earlier.

Now, I have disabled the auto-enhance, I can now work on new projects without having to end in a hair-pulling event trying to figure out if I did some wrong in the post-processing.

I re-learned one more thing -- clean all items that will be in the frame ahead of time before shooting to minimize work during post processing.

Chicken Buffalo

Recently, my wife's Chicken Buffalo has been a hit!

The first time I brought my wife's version of Chicken Buffalo in our office was during my birthday celebration. Actually, all the food that was prepared were given all a thumbs up but the Chicken Buffalo stood up from the rest and had repeat orders.

I have been longing to shoot these Chicken Buffalo and it's only now that I had the chance. It is an impromptu shoot and I squeezed those brain cells to recall all those tips on how to shoot food.

Now for the "How I Shot It" part.

The above photo was the result of an impromptu shoot during one of the repeat order preparations. I had to do the (cramming) setup while the chicken are being prepared and cooked.

First, I searched for some inspiration on how to shoot these delicious Chicken Buffalo. Mostly I found images that are on a basket and white plates. I didn't have plain white plates nor those food baskets. So, I scoured around to replace those basket and white plates base and I found a wooden chopping board from my props box which I thought would work as a replacement.

I then looked for a container that would contain the sour cream sauce and my wife suggested these sort of cup that was white inside but blue on the outside. I then based the table lining on this container's color.

Now that I got the basic elements, I started laying down the table lining and positioning the wooden chopping board and started framing with the given space constraint. I then slowly added the main light which created a heavy shadow in the sauce container. I tried using a reflector to lift up the shadow but it wasn't enough thus I added another light to act as a fill light. Had to play around with some flash power settings to get the highlight and fill light combination just right.

After I got some sample shots of the position and lighting, I gradually added elements into the picture. I wanted to add celery but we didn't had one but luckily we had some leeks. I used the stalk part to act as celery. This green stuff will add contrast and color to the photo. For the garnishing, I chopped more of the leeks as a replacement for onion springs that was scattered and placed on the cream. I had to do what I had at hand. The fried garlic were part of the original garnishing so there was abundant of it.

So, after a couple of shots tweaking, adding, and adjusting more fill-light boards came out the result as shown above and below.

I adjusted the white balance and levels in post processing using GIMP.

Halloween's Around The Corner

When I was young, I had a chance to go "Trick or Treat"ing but I don't recall having to put on a full costume. All I remember is that I was given masks to wear and that's it.

Now that I have my kids, with my wife who enthusiastically prepare for such occasions, I have had some chance to take part in their costumes.

Here's one back from 2011 that's 100% from scratch -- except for the pumpkin baskets.

Light Painting With Strobes

Below is my take, my shot, and my view on Oakley's TEN... Click on "Read more..." below and see how I did it.

The image above is the final image of what I shot which is an almost in-camera photo. I needed to do a few cosmetic enhancements to get the look I wanted. Check out the series of photos below on how I did the cosmetic enhancements.

Before we go to the cosmetic enhancements part, let me tell you some technical details of the image:

Lens: 85mm
Aperture: F16 - this is to get as much of depth-of field (DOF) I can get
ISO: 100 - this to get the cleanest photo I can get
Exposure: BULB

Yes, you read that right! I shot in BULB mode. Why you may ask. Simply because I was short in light. I had only two (2) strobes to work with but I wanted four (4) lights to act as listed below:

Background light;
On-axis side light (camera right) for the logo;
Front-top light for highlights to define shape; and
Another side light (camera left) but on higher height for additional highlight and shape on the left side

As I worked with BULB mode, I turned off the lights in the room with just enough light so I can move around the darkened room and proceeded to do some light painting. Light painting was my last option to get the effect of four lights with just only two available strobes -- three parts of the so-called painting are:

Background + side light (camera right)
Front-top light, and
Side light (camera left)

And this is the result after 27 seconds of moving about in the dark:

I liked the exposure and lighting already but I wanted to do the effect of it floating in the air as I have envisioned it. Now that I've got my base image to work with, read on and let's begin the cosmetic enhancement part.

Initially I wanted to rig this setup with nylon strings so it would literally float and I can just clean up the strings during post-processing but I didn't had any nylon strings so that plan was out the window. I settled for a coffee table or some sort that I found which I thought would be the next perfect option. Using the table, the camera angle plays an important role in the setup. If you can notice, I intentionally aligned the camera straight into the subject. I also adjusted the camera's height at par to the table's height and angled it close to 0 degrees to eliminate as much of the desk surface area and have as little contact points seen between the edges of the subject and the table. I did this to make the post processing easier. So, after the usual part of my workflow of White Balance (WB) correction and dust cleaning, let's check out the first step in achieving that final image.

1. Remove the table and replace it with the background color. I carefully selected the table and deleted it away. I selected the lightest color from the background color and filled the space where the table used to be and blended it with the rest of the background.

2. Remove the reflections of the table on the lens. Now that the table was replaced with the background color, it looks that it is floating but the lens caught the reflection of the table. So I carefully replaced the light colored reflection on the lens with the darker shade on the lens.

3. Remove the reflections on the left-side part. Similarly, the reflections on the left-side too needs to be replaced with shade of the lens on that side as well.

4. Sharpen the image. I sharpened the image a little using the Unsharp Mask filter.

A Morning Bloom

Pondering some creative time for the past few days to get away from work things, I unexpectedly found myself trying and doing this (short) time-lapse thingy as you can view below.

As the video description says:

This morning, while washing the car, I noticed a ~~bloom~~ flower in the garden. As the sun was rising from the horizon, I knew this flower will bloom in awhile as it does usually in the morning. I just wanted to share one of nature's many wonders that is often go unnoticed.

This is my first try of doing time-lapse video with my beloved Canon EOS 1000D/XS. Controlling the exposure of each photo was a challenge as I initially exposed for a lower light level and stuck with it and the latter parts of the photo series, I have over-exposed photos due to the change in light levels. I didn't want to move the cam to change settings so I just left it as is and just handled the over-exposed photos during post-processing.

The thirty-or-so seconds of video was a photo series of 100 photos. I had an interval of 45 seconds for each photo. Photos were taken between 07:22 and 08:34 on January 06, 2013.

I'm hoping for another take on this time-lapse thingy.. 'til next time. Hope you enjoyed the short clip.
