This morning we talked about YSlow Firebug Addon and how to use it for increasing performance of your website/blog. But the discussion is actually incomplete if we don’t talk about the Google’s Firebug addon » Page Speed. Basically this extends Firefox’s Firebug Addon with more functionability from Google’s Webmasters tool. With this addon you can see what Google thinks about your site and how you can make it better! Now who don’t want to please the big G! So here we are giving a quick tutorial on using the cool piece of Firefox addon.

#0: Requirements and installation:

As before, you need to have Firefox along with firebug. If you don’t have it already you can get them here:

Then all you have to do is install Page Speed Addon by Google.

• Download and Install Page Speed Firebug addon.

#1: Using Page Speed for analyzing your site:

This pretty easy and straight forward. All you have to do is:

• Open you site on a tab.
• Click on the Firebug icon from the taskbar then navigate to the Page Speed tab.
• Now just hit on the Analyze Performance button and everything else will be taken care of…

After that you will be given a complete score of your site according to the performance! Have a look at the report of ours…

#2: Browsing the resources (css, images, js etc):

The best feature about Page Speed is, you can easily navigate through the resources your site is using from the resource tab. This will not only show the resource type and size but also the header requests sent and received while GETing the resource. For example have a look at here…

It shows that no cookie is being sent on requesting the file from cdn.intechgrity.com which is a good practice for serving static contents…

Are you fond of playing online game? If so, then I might have the right thing for you. Basically, I too got a little interest in this game when I was asked to review their service.

ZombieDobby is basically a browser based game for net savvies. You install the ZombieDobby Toolbar on your Firefox and you are a part of the zombie world…

Keep on surfing the net to increase your score. When you start you get 10 Health. As you surf you increase your score and buy upgrades to keep alive and avoid being a Zombie. Say, on a particular domain, if you encounter with another player [both being brain] the encountering starts [ie, tagging the page]… If you win, you get huge bonus and increased health. If you lose your health is decreased by 1. Lose all your health and you become a Zombie… Now attack other brains and try to make them Zombie as well… To know more about the rules have a look at here.

Basically, what I feel is, the concept behind the game is to tag internet in a funny way. You tag pages when you encounter a player, win it and get points. On the contrary, your tagging helps the system to improve internet!

To play this game all you need to do is install the Firefox extension. Rest all is done by the toolbar itself!

This game is currently is in alpha version, so it is currently undergoing tests, upgrades and bug fixes. What more? Well ZombieDobby will be out of Alpha testing on or before June 1, 2010, at which time the first full prize round will begin and players will be automatically entered to win a new Sony Playstation 3 game system. So, you should try your luck this time!!

Microsoft said on Friday that more than 7.5 million people have been using the beta version of Office 2010.

It also said that it has finished with the development work on the next version of the Office family, including Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010, and Project 2010.

The Office suite, in all its many flavors, will hit store shelves in June and Microsoft is planning a separate Gotham event to mark that occasion. Microsoft is also taking preorders for Office on its online store. Already Microsoft has been promising those buying Office 2007 a free upgrade to Office 2010.Sounds like a good deal !

The products were "released to manufacturing," which is the final engineering step. The products are slated to be available for businesses next month and Microsoft is holding a launch event on May 12 in New York.

RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone," vice president Takeshi Numoto said in a blog posting.

"It is also an appropriate time to re-emphasize our sincere gratitude to the more than 5,000 organizations and partners who have worked with us on rapid deployment and testing of the products."

If you are a regular internet user, then you must have came across many sites showing web videos [Take YouTube for example]. Basically when you play a video from these sites, the videos are actually stored in your hard disk. Your browser downloads them and then plays it accordingly. But as the download is not direct, you can not save it for your personal use and have to replay [i.e., download the video again] the video to see it again.

Basically it is very easy:

• Simply go to sites like YouTube where videos are embedded and streamed on a webpage.
• In most of the cases, a Video Download Helper Button will get appended beside the video. Simply click on the button and download your video.
• Else access the Addon from the navigation toolbar icon. Simply click on the button beside the Address bar and a menu will show you a list of videos on the current page. Download the one you like.

Other Features of Video DownloadHelper Addon:

Apart from this, there are many other things which you can do with this cool addon.

• Download and Convert the video in various formats;
  Basically it uses a third party converter, namely convertHelper to do this. It is only 3.6 MB and you can download it to enable this video conversion feature. There are two versions free and registered. The free version only shows a DownloadHelper logo on the converted video.
• You can tweet about the video
• Add the video to black list
• Or, even send the video to your mobile

You need to setup DownloadHelper properly to access all these features. Simply Right Click on the Video DownloadHelper icon from the navigation bar and go to Preferences. From there go to Services and enter all the information needed…

By default Video DownloadHelper searches for Adult videos as well. If you don’t want this then you can set this off from here. Note than you won’t be able to revert settings back after you enter into the safe mode.

Many users face problem while disabling the Windows Automatic Update on Windows 7. Even last time my bro called me and asked me how to do this. Now you may wonder what’s the big deal in just disabling it from the Windows Update Center from Control Panel. Basically, the thing is that when we disable it from the Windows Update Center, only a part of it gets disabled. But Windows Update still starts automatically and eats up some of your precious bandwidth…

So we are going to discuss how to permanently disable Windows Update from Windows 7. After this tweak Windows 7 update service will not start at all… So you don’t have to worry about any excess bandwidth usage… [Recommended Reading: 5 tips to lower your broadband usage over internet]

#1: Disabling from Windows Update Center:

This is a easier step and you might be aware of it. Anyways for those who don’t know, here are the steps…

• Go to Start Menu > Control Panel and switch to large icon view
• Now at the end of the list click on “Windows Update”
• Windows Update panel will pop up. Now select the “Let me choose my settings” option
• Now under “Important Updates” section click on the dropdown menu and select the “Never Check for Updates” option.
• Apply all changes [Just press OK] and you are done

#2: Disabling from the Administrative Tools:

In this step we will disable the Automatic Update service from the administrative tools. This will permanently stop it and will prevent it from being started on each start up. So after this tweak, you don’t have to worry about Automatic Updates anymore…

Caution: Doing so will make any program depending on Windows Update API [WUA] stop working. So it is not recommended if you use such program. [But I will recommend you to do this if you want to save your bandwidth!]

So here is how to do it:

• Go to Control Panel before and switch to Icon View as before. Now click on the “Administrative Tools” icon.
• From the Administrative Tools double click on “Services”. This will open up the Service panel.
• Now scroll down to the list and find and select “Windows Update”. While selecting it take a look on the left sidebar panel. If there is something like “Stop the Service” simply click on it. Else just ignore this step.
• Now right click on Windows Update and go to Properties.
• Now under the Startup Type from the Properties Window select the Disabled option from the dropdown menu.
• Hit OK and save everything

Voila… Now you have properly disabled the windows update…

Previously we have discussed on pros and cons of adding watermarks on your blog post images. So, I thought of completing this post by explaining the easiest method of automatically inserting watermarks on your blog post. We have already covered the best and free offline blog posting software [WYSIWYG] Windows Live Writer and its useful plugins. So now lets see how we can configure it easily to insert watermarks on every inserted images on our post…

#Step 1: Inserting the Image:

 Click on the image to enlarge 

• Click on the “Picture…” icon on the right “Insert” Panel.
• A new window will popup. Select your picture and Click on ok.

#Step 2: Adding the Watermark to your image:

• Simply select the picture and the “Picture” menu will open up on the right panel.
• Now click on the “Advanced” tab on the panel and click on “Watermark…”.
• This will popup the watermark text window. Enter your Watermark text [Like, we use “Picture by www.inTechgrity.com”]
• Also adjust the position of your watermark to best fit your image.

#Step 3: Saving your settings to automatically insert watermark on every image:

• Now again select the picture and click on “Picture” tab.
• Simply Click on “Save settings as default” and you are done.

Now your watermarks will be inserted on each of your post images…

Some Tips:

• You should add watermarks only to the images you have created. Do not add watermarks to the images you have used from web. This may break the copyright protection of that image. Just be on the safer side and include a backlink to the source image instead.
• Watermarks are only good when they are not blocking the image from being viewed properly. So always change the position of the watermarks according to your image. I prefer using Bottom right or Bottom left position.
• Personally I do not add any watermark to small images as it will block the content of the image!

Removing the watermark:

This is pretty easy…

• Select the watermarked image > Go to Advanced Tab from the right panel > Click on Watermarks… [As before]
• Now simply delete the watermark text from the Watermark Window and this will remove watermark from your image

Although this is a very basic thing, but I thought of posting this as many users are having difficulties doing so. But before we proceed, let us have a quick look on what UAC is. UAC or User Account Control is a windows tool, which informs your whenever you or a program tries to make system level change. The prompt in the above image shows a typical UAC confirmation. It was developed to prevent malicious or unwanted software installation or system changes which can potentially cause damage to your PC.

The concept behind UAC is pretty good, but I personally feel that in real application, UAC fails to do what it is designed to. Most of the times it becomes an annoying prompt which takes our attention from what we are doing. Also, many programs and software will not even run if you have UAC enabled. So let us see, how we can disable the UAC on our Windows 7 PC.

Disabling from default category view Control Panel:

By default our Control Panel is set to category view. If your Control panel looks like the image above, then simply follow the steps:

• Go to Start Menu > Control Panel and the control panel window will appear;
• Now Click on the User Account and Family Safety icon. This will bring you the User Account Panel.
• Now click on User Accounts icon.
• Finally click on the Change User Account Control Settings under the “Make Changes to your user account” menu panel. This will bring you the UAC settings panel.
• Now simply slide down the left slidebar to make it “Never Notify”. Save all the open windows and you are done.

So that was quite simple, isn’t it! Now lets see how to access to icon type Control Panel View.

Disabling from icon type Control Panel view:

If your Control panel is set as “Large” or “Small” icons, then it should look like this. You can change the views by clicking the “View By” menu. Simply follow the steps below:

• Locate and Click on the “User Accounts” icon. It is generally located on the lower part of the Panel.
• Now you will see the User Accounts panel like before.
• Simply follow the 4th and 5th steps of the previous part and you will successfully disable UAC.
