In the magazine &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Hypnos&lt;/span&gt; #8 (spring 2011) appears my brief essay about the author, “Stefan Grabiński. Lunga amnesia italiana per un grande autore del fantastico” [literally: “Stefan Grabinski. A long Italian amnesia for a major author of the Fantastic”], and my translation of his two short stories “L’area” (“Dziedzina” / “The Area”) and “Nello scompartimento” (“W przedziale” / “In the Compartment”). The cover art is a Grabiński’s portrait by &lt;a href="http://ginus.beepworld.it/index.htm" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Gino Carosini&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, a description of the magazine issue is &lt;a href="http://weirdletter.blogspot.com/2011/06/hypnos-8-con-stefan-grabinski-e-shirley.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;here&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; (in Italian).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have found six of my photomontages inside the book &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Lovecraft e le ombre&lt;/span&gt;, Italian edition of &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Belknap_Long" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Frank Belknap Long&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;’s &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;H.P. Lovecraft: Dreamer on the Night Side&lt;/span&gt; (1975). I was unaware of it, and obviously unpaid for them, not even with a presentation copy. But it’s all my fault: I’ve granted these pictures for free publication on a monthly magazine about ten years ago, and now the publisher still continues to use them as he pleases. This is the Italian publishing market. The Return of Sir Richard Grenville&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; è un appassionato omaggio all’omonimo poema howardiano, trasformato in un&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; fan film&lt;/span&gt; della durata di quattro minuti circa attraverso l’integrazione tra riprese dal vivo e animazione computerizzata&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;.&lt;/span&gt;  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Sempre in penombra, il volto duro e squadrato di Kane è quello dell’attore &lt;a href="http://www.247cast.com/michaelellison" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Michael Ellison&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, a dividersi la scena con i due altri interpreti &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Rob Batie&lt;/span&gt; ed &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Evens Duplessy Jr.&lt;/span&gt;, mentre i versi di Howard – che scandiscono l’azione –  sono affidati alla voce narrante di &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Andrew Bowyer&lt;/span&gt;, su musiche di &lt;a href="http://www.wolfgangmittendorfer.com/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Wolfgang Mittendorfer&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Pubblicata postuma soltanto nel 1968, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The Return of Sir Richard Grenville&lt;/span&gt; è una poesia di Robert Howard, in origine senza titolo, che vede l’incontro fra Solomon Kane e la provvidenziale “presenza” del vecchio compagno d’arme morto nel 1591: l’esploratore, corsaro e politico inglese &lt;a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Grenville" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Richard Grenville&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. sul grande schermo già si parlava sin dal 2005, fra eterni rimandi e la caduta nell’oblio di tanti altri progetti &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;fantasy&lt;/span&gt; annunciati. Da allora quasi perso di vista, il film si rivela oggi già pronto, prodotto da &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0352820/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Samuel Hadida&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; e girato fra la Repubblica Ceca e il Regno Unito, scritto e diretto da un &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1068186/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Michael J. Bassett&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; al suo terzo lavoro cinematografico dopo l’ottimo horror bellico soprannaturale &lt;a href="http://www.cinemahorror.it/abisso/scheda-film.asp?id=832" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Deathwatch&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; (2002) e il più recente &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;thriller&lt;/span&gt; orrorifico &lt;a href="http://www.cinemahorror.it/abisso/scheda-film.asp?id=1495" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Wilderness&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; (2006). Anche il &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;cast&lt;/span&gt;  appare del tutto promettente, con il bel tenebroso &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0700856/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;James Purefoy&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; a vestire i neri panni dello spadaccino puritano, e un paio d&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;’&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;apparizioni di richiamo come quelle di &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000592/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Pete Postlethwaite&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; e dell’immancabile &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001884/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Max von Sydow&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Quel che ancora manca, a quanto pare, è “solo” un&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;’adeguata&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; distribuzione. Così, niente data d’uscita, per momento &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;almeno&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;; nessun&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; trailer&lt;/span&gt; in circolazione, rare le fotografie di scena e ben scarse le notizie al riguardo, diffuse dal &lt;a href="http://www.michaelbassett.com/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;blog&lt;/span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;di &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Michael Bassett&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; e rimbalzate in giro per il &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;web&lt;/span&gt; fra siti e forum. Poche le proiezioni private a caccia di riscontri&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; e&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; – &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; appunto&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; – &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;di distributori&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;, l’ultima delle quali al Festival di Cannes. Sulla base di queste visioni limitate circola in rete l’unica recensione disponibile, decisamente entusiastica e stracarica di &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;spoilers&lt;/span&gt;, apparsa l’8 maggio scorso su &lt;a href="http://www.aintitcool.com/node/41022" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Ain’t It Cool&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. Successo permettendo, la pellicola vorrebbe essere la prima in una trilogia che possa portare al cinema le storie dell’eroe howardiano&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;.&lt;/span&gt; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hh4wCWSJ6w4/Sg-Y4PNGD-I/AAAAAAAABi0/jwp2X9ciX2Q/s1600-h/weird-tales-1928-08.jpg" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 3px 0px 3px 20px; float: right; cursor: pointer; height: 260px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hh4wCWSJ6w4/Sg-Y4PNGD-I/AAAAAAAABi0/jwp2X9ciX2Q/s320/weird-tales-1928-08.jpg" title="Weird Tales, august 1928" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336652175378878434" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Kane" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Solomon Kane&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, non fa mai male rammentarlo, è uno spadaccino d’austera estrazione puritana che vaga in avventure esotiche e sovrannaturali tra l’Inghilterra e l’Africa, le Americhe e &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;il resto dell’Europa&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; del periodo storico fra il XVI e il XVII secolo, in una fanatica ed estrema missione personale come strumento di giustizia contro il male. Dunque il più manicheo – e forse maniacale – fra i personaggi di &lt;a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Ervin_Howard" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Robert Ervin Howard&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, ma quello pure dotato di un più complesso spessore psicologico.&lt;/span&gt; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Il debutto di Kane, con un nome che già fonde assieme quelli biblici e antitetici di re Salomone e di Caino, avviene con il racconto &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;“&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Red Shadows&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; sulla rivista &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Weird Tales&lt;/span&gt; dell’agosto 1928. font-style: italic;"&gt;The Dark Grimoire Tarot&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, un mazzo di tarocchi pubblicato nel 2008 dall’editore specializzato torinese Lo Scarabeo&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Concepita in origine come &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;I tarocchi del Necronomicon&lt;/span&gt;, l’edizione sembra aver rinunciato a un titolo in esplicito riferimento allo pseudobiblium lovecraftiano, probabilmente a seguito dell’uscita di &lt;a href="http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/necronomicon/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;The Necronomicon Tarot&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; (2007), l’analogo mazzo tematico di &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Tyson" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Donald Tyson&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; Il &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;blog&lt;/span&gt; dell’autore mostra peraltro alcuni esempi inediti dei suoi fumetti, a partire dagli adattamenti lovecraftiani de &lt;a href="http://michelepenco.blogspot.com/2007/12/queste-sono-alcune-pagine-del-fumetto.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"&gt;La maschera di Innsmouth&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; e &lt;a href="http://michelepenco.blogspot.com/2007/12/un-altro-fumetto-di-ispirazione.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Il modello di Pickman&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, che paiono affidarsi a una resa visuale – più assai che narrativa – dei racconti sugli efficaci pennelli di un fine bianco e nero. Sin a incontrare entità che, come mastini a guardia di una soglia, lo inseguiranno fino al suo “presente”  insinuandosi in varchi di stravolte geometrie spazio-temporali&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;.&lt;span style=""&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span&gt;Questo, in sintesi, il tema di &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;“&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;The Hounds of Tindalos,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; un racconto &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;“lovecraftiano” &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;di &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Belknap_Long" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Frank Belknap Long&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; apparso su &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Weird Tales&lt;/span&gt; del marzo 1929, cui direttamente si ispira il cortometraggio francese &lt;a href="http://handigrimpe.blogspot.com/2007/03/les-chiens-de-tindalos.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Les Chiens de Tindalos&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; realizzato nel 2007 sotto il marchio produttivo di Old Casa – del quale, ahinoi, non risulta più attivo il sito &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;web&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Girato in tutta economia – con una videocamera MiniDv e due fari alogeni, come rivelano i titoli di coda –, il corto si affida alla regia di &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Olivier Laffont&lt;/span&gt; per la direzione artistica di &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Muriel Pascal&lt;/span&gt;. A interpretare il protagonista Alpin Chalmers è il cantante &lt;a href="http://www.myspace.com/chapson" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;"Chapson" Eric Chapuis&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; con &lt;a href="http://www.myspace.com/franckmeissonnier" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Franck Meissonnier&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; , musicista e tecnico del suono, impegnato nel ruolo di Frank oltre che autore della colonna sonora integrata da musica di Mendelssohn&lt;span style=""&gt;.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;L’ambientazione viene spostata a Londra e indietro di vent’anni rispetto alla storia originale, rendendo in qualche modo anacronistico, nel 1908, qualche riferimento a Einstein ripreso peraltro fedelmente dalla fonte letteraria insieme a buona parte dei dialoghi. La fobia di Chalmers per gli angoli resta appena accennata nel comprimere un’azione che “racconta” assai più che “mostrare” tramite effetti grafici, ridotti al minimo, amalgamati con la mossa fotografia anticata in bianco e nero&lt;span style=""&gt;.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Appassionato sin dall’infanzia al disegno e la pittura, studia &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;design&lt;/span&gt; architettonico ma sceglie dopo la laurea di diventare un artista digitale, impegnato sia nella grafica che nell’animazione tridimensionale.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Insegnante d’arte attualmente presso l’Università dello Yunnan, i suoi interessi giovanili lo portano ad avvicinasi al Surrealismo, modello artistico piuttosto inusuale per la Cina, mentre si dichiarano evidenti le influenze di uno &lt;a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zdzis%C5%82aw_Beksi%C5%84ski" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Zdzisław Beksiński&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; e un &lt;a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giger" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;H.R. Tutti interventi in cui si esalta, come fattore di primaria importanza, l’appartenenza all’ormai famoso Ordine Ermetico dell’Alba Dorata, &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermetic_Order_of_the_Golden_Dawn" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;Citando quindi &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Ver Sacrum&lt;/span&gt; piuttosto che altre fonti: &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;“Uno degli avvenimenti fondamentali nella vita di Machen si verificò nel 1899, quando entrò a far parte della società esoterica della Golden Dawn, setta ispirata al Rosacrucianesimo. In realtà furono molti gli intellettuali che all’epoca che entrarono in contatto con &lt;/span&gt;&lt;st1:personname style="font-style: italic;" productid="la Golden Dawn" st="on"&gt;la Golden Dawn&lt;/st1:personname&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;, fra cui vanno almeno ricordati Bulwer-Lytton, Yeats, Bram Stoker e il celeberrimo mago Aleister Crowley che ne divenne in seguito anche il capo”.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;Tanto particolare entusiasmo per &lt;st1:personname productid="la Golden Dawn" st="on"&gt;la Golden  Dawn,&lt;/st1:personname&gt; da parte degli scrittori del periodo, appare in verità ampiamente mitizzato, spesso basato su informazioni parziali, datate o palesemente “di parte” che continuano tuttavia a restare fra le più diffuse, un po’ come accade per le leggende attorno a Lovecraft, complice l'estrema diffusione via&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; internet&lt;/span&gt;. I più documentati citano a supporto testi e pubblicazioni che, a ben vedere, non si rivelano a loro volta così limpidi circa le proprie fonti. Per esempio, l’affiliazione di Stoker risulta oggi indimostrabile benché avesse amici nell’Ordine (a tal proposito, vedasi in italiano il recente &lt;a href="http://in-tenebris-scriptus.blogspot.com/2009/03/dark-screen-il-mito-di-dracula-sul.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;The Dark Screen&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; di Pezzini e Tintori, Gargoyle 2008).&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;Aderire a una massoneria o una società esoterica, nell’Inghilterra tra fine Ottocento e primi Novecento, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;per molti &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;non era poi troppo diverso dall’iscriversi a un circolo sociale elitario, con una partecipazione personale non di rado minima o superficiale. E in quanto a Machen – ma non solo lui, vedremo – l’importanza del suo rapporto con l’Alba Dorata non è tanto individuabile nelle pretese conoscenze occulte che avrebbe dovuto trasporre in narrativa, come non pochi amano pensare, quanto nella profonda &lt;/span&gt;disillusione verso tali società esoteriche, documentata nei suoi scritti.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Poco dopo la morte della moglie, &lt;a href="http://www.machensoc.demon.co.uk/machbiog.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Arthur Machen&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; aderisce alla Golden Dawn su invito dell’amico &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Edward_Waite" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Arthur Edward Waite&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, risultandone iniziato nel novembre &lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:state st="on"&gt;del&lt;/st1:state&gt;&lt;/st1:place&gt; 1899. &lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;Ma non si lascia coinvolgere più di tanto da un gruppo nel quale non ritrova un congeniale ambiente spirituale, e non andrà oltre il grado di Praticus, il terzo nell’Ordine più esterno. Ne sarà un poco più coinvolto approfondendo in tale ambiente le aree di suo maggiore interesse, ma lui pure si fermerà presto: raggiunto il grado massimo del primo Ordine, non prosegue oltre scegliendo di non diventare un adepto. &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Starlight Man: The Extraordinary Life of Algernon Blackwood&lt;/span&gt;, la biografia &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;apparsa nel 2001 a firma &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;di &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Ashley_%28writer%29" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Mike Ashley&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, fornisce particolari sull’intero argomento.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;Sia Machen che Blackwood seguono Waite quando ricostituisce &lt;st1:personname productid="la Golden Dawn" st="on"&gt;la Golden Dawn&lt;/st1:personname&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;nel 1903, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;dopo che si era spezzata in due fazioni, ma entrambi già perdevano interesse. Blackwood la considerava non più che una sorta di “club esclusivo” e scriverà&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt; più avanti&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt;, sulla rivista &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Time and Tide&lt;/span&gt; del 16 marzo 1923, di condividere il giudizio tutt’altro che lusinghiero espresso da Machen nel decimo capitolo del volume autobiografico &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Things Near and Far&lt;/span&gt;, pubblicato nel 1923:&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="" lang="IT"&gt; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;“But as for anything vital in the secret order, or anything that mattered two straws to any reasonable being, there was nothing of it, and less than nothing. Among the members there were, indeed, persons of very high attainments, who, in my opinion, ought to have known better after a year’s membership or less; but the society as a society was pure foolishness concerned with impotent and imbecile Abracadabras. It knew nothing about anything and concealed the fact under an impressive ritual and a sonorous phraseology. e &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Phenix&lt;/span&gt;, autore di copertine discografiche e di numerose &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;covers&lt;/span&gt; di genere per l’editoria francese&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;span&gt;.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;span&gt;Le sue tavole percorrono i temi disturbanti – e a tratti apertamente provocatori – della follia, la morte, l’alienazione dell’infanzia. Whitehead&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; e &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Ray" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Jean Ray&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, il più recente &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Aickman" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Robert Aickman&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, l’&lt;a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Kubin" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Alfred Kubin&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; scrittore o anche i &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;weird tales&lt;/span&gt; valdarnesi del nostro &lt;a href="http://www.ilfagiolozolfino.it/terranuova/testi/psk114.html" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Giovanni Magherini-Graziani&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Nella sua uscita di primavera 2009, la pubblicazione curata come sempre da &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Andrea Giusto&lt;/span&gt; si apre con un racconto “italiano” di &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanns_Heinz_Ewers" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Hanns Heinz Ewers&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; “Il &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;ghigno&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; (C.3.3., 1903), apparso ne &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;I cuori dei re e altri racconti&lt;/span&gt; (&lt;st1:personname productid="La Conchiglia" st="on"&gt;La  Conchiglia&lt;/st1:personname&gt;, 2005) senza indicazioni circa la traduzione e, in precedenza, ne &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Il ragno e altri racconti del terrore&lt;/span&gt; (Del Bosco, 1972) per la versione a firma di &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Marie Odazio&lt;/span&gt;. Nella Capri frequentata dall’autore ai primi del Novecento, la storia si sviluppa sull’incontro fra Ewers e un ormai esule ed esausto &lt;a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Wilde" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Oscar Wilde&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; perseguitato da una sinistra, grottesca e immane presenza.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Un lungo e dettagliato saggio di &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Pietro Guarriello&lt;/span&gt;, forse al momento il più esauriente a disposizione nella nostra lingua, segue a illuminare l’opera e la figura controversa, oggi qui poco nota, dello scrittore tedesco scomparso nel 1943.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Al britannico &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sax_Rohmer" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Sax Rohmer&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, nome d’arte di Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward, è invece dedicato l’articolo di &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Andrea Morandi&lt;/span&gt; a introduzione de &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;“&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Il signore degli sciacalli&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; (Lord of the Jackals, 1917), un racconto inedito, sinora, per l’Italia, ottimamente tradotto dallo stesso Morandi. Vicenda essenzialmente esotica che volge al fantastico tra le sabbie del deserto egiziano, si tratta dell’unico titolo pubblicato su &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Weird Tales&lt;/span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; – &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;nel settembre del 1927&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; – &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; per il creatore del celeberrimo Dr. Fu Manchu, autore di storie soprannaturali oltre che &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;mystery&lt;/span&gt;. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Ancora un breve intervento saggistico si occupa questa volta dei Current 93, lo storico gruppo musicale di &lt;a href="http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Tibet" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;David Tibet&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; del quale &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Cesare Buttaboni&lt;/span&gt; ci espone tematiche e interessi nel solco della tradizione gotica anglosassone, espressi in studio di registrazione come nel campo editoriale.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;Ultima citazione riservata a &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;“&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;I dottori della peste,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt;”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="IT"&gt; racconto che segna il ritorno di &lt;a href="http://www.fantascienza.net/strane_storie/Torello.htm" target="_blank="&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Ivo Torello&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; alla narrativa stampata dopo un troppo lungo periodo di silenzio. Mentre vagavo senza meta un sabato pomeriggio (chiedendomi, naturalmente, se anche Lovecraft avesse un tempo vagato per quelle stesse strade), mi capitò di passare davanti a un monte dei pegni. La vetrina era piena del solito vivace assortimento di oggetti: chitarre elettriche, radiosveglie, rasoi a lama, sassofoni, anelli, ciondoli e pistole –  pistole – pistole. Mentre guardavo tutta quesa accozzaglia, Mr Idea parlò dalla sua postazione in fondo alla mia testa, come ogni tanto fa, per motivi che nessun autore sembra comprendere pienamente. Mr Idea disse: «E se ci fosse un cuscino in quella vetrina? Un comune vecchio cuscino dalla federa leggermente ingiallita? E supponi che qualcuno (curioso del perché un simile oggetto sia esposto, magari uno scrittore come te) entri e chieda, e il responsabile del monte dei pegni gli dica che quello era il cuscino di H.P. Lovecraft. Contre le monde, contre la vie&lt;/span&gt; (1991). Intervento kinghiano che, in Italia, verrà aggiunto a postfazione del saggio nella seconda edizione &lt;span&gt;(2005)&lt;/span&gt; di &lt;span&gt;Bompiani&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;.&lt;span style=""&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span&gt;Da qui dunque l’idea per &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0888510/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Lovecraft’s Pillow&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, un cortometraggio scritto da &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0824847/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Mark Steensland&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; insieme a &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2435304/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Rick Hautala&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; e diretto nel 2006 dallo stesso Steensland, autore fra l’altro del curioso &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Il Vangelo secondo Philip K. Dick&lt;/span&gt; (The Gospel According to Philip K. Dick, 2001), un &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;documentario&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;a suo tempo &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;proposto &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt; in videocassetta da Fanucci. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Uno scrittore di genere pieno di debiti quanto vuoto di reale ispirazione, la sventurata moglie, l’uomo del banco dei pegni e un medico rappresentano l’intero &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;cast&lt;/span&gt; dei personaggi messi in scena. Il corto, della durata di dieci minuti circa, si limita a sviluppare al minimo le pur vaste possibilità del soggetto che si risolve, assai più che in vena fantastica, con tocco un po’ scontato e cinico da vecchio &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;comic&lt;/span&gt; horror americano&lt;span style=""&gt;.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style=""&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Una recensione in inglese si trova su &lt;a href="http://www.dreadcentral.com/reviews/lovecrafts-pillow-short-film" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;DreadCentral&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.
