When Speaker John Boehner announced his retirement last year many believed that his number two, Kevin McCarthy would be a shoo-in for the Speaker position. McCarthy, however, made controversial statements about the House Select Committee investigating Hillary Clinton's role in the Benghazi attacks and was forced to drop out of the running. The only other person the entire Republican Caucus could unite behind was Paul Ryan. Ryan reluctantly accepted the role but not without some conditions. One of them was the reinstatement of "regular order" in the House, which would empower every member to propose legislation without interference from leadership.

In this episode we discuss how the conservative movement has put the Republican establishment in a no-win situation and how Paul Ryan may have found an ingenious way to get him and the Republican establishment out of it.

Email the show at comments@itnshow.com.

Follow In the News on Twitter @itnshow and on Facebook at facebook.com/itnshow.

Download the In the News App for you smartphone or tablet. The US has been fighting ISIS for close to two years at a cost of about $6 billion and counting, with the results being at best, mixed.

I speak often on this show about Newt Gingrich and how much of the vitriol and the dysfunction that plagues our Congress have their roots in methods Gingrich employed during his time there. Gingrich arrived in Congress in the late 1970s and almost immediately sought out controversy and conflict with fellow members. Similarly, Democrats used scorched earth politics when opposing the appointment of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court in the late 1980s. Both Gingrich and the Democrats were able to achieve their means but the consequences of the actions were that our politics became much more polarized.

In this episode we discuss Donald Trump. We detail his rise to frontrunner status in the presidential campaign and ask whether it’s time to start subjecting his promises to a higher level of scrutiny.

John Kasich is the sitting governor of Ohio but his political resume extends far beyond that. He served nine terms in the US House of Representatives including 18 years on the House Armed Services Committee and six years as Chairman of the House Budget Committee. His stances on political issues over his career have been as varied as being for an assault-weapons ban and for defunding Planned Parenthood. The unpredictability of his stances on political issues is matched only by the unpredictability of his temperament, which can go from empathetic to brash over the course of a single conversation. But it’s this unpredictability that makes John Kasich one of the most compelling candidates in the 2016 race.

How is John Kasich performing in the 2016 election? How is he performing in relation to Donald Trump and why is betting big both on himself and on Ohio? We discuss in today’s episode.

Since then the FBI has opened an investigation into the handling of classified information on her server and speculation has run wild as to whether Clinton herself would have charges filed against her.

We are a few days away from the Iowa Caucuses, the first nominating process in the 2016 presidential election. How and why did the Iowa Caucuses become the all-important nominating process it is today and what the heck happens at a caucus anyway? We discuss in today’s episode.

We also discuss the growing rift between the Republican base and its power structure and attempt to describe just what makes a person a member of the “establishment” these days.

You can find a clip of Bill O’Reilly’s interview with Donald Trump here.

Grumblings have begun within the Republican establishment about the direction of the Party and the effect the Tea Party wing is having on it. There are also grumblings about the state of the 2016 presidential election and disapproval – if not downright denial – about who the nominee is shaping up to be. Are we heading toward a fissure between the establishment and Tea Party wings of the Republican Party? In this episode we review how we got to this point and analyze why the Tea Party should have more to show for the electoral success than they do.

Democrats and the white House have been pushing for criminal justice reforms for a number of years now.
