I once found this really depressing mixed tape at the Salvation Army that was obviously made by a dad after he had his heart broken. It was 11 heavy “love is lost” rock ballads, all CCR and Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Then closed with Joni Mitchell, which is almost certainly the song that doesn’t run in the twenty-three minute drive home from work, but if you were to park down the street and leave the car running for 5 more minutes–if you are so paralyzed by heartbreak that you can’t even get out of the car and you just need Joni and here she is on track 12 you don’t even have to change the tape and god that voice–it’s basically the sad dad bonus track.

The track listing was in Dad Writing (all caps, very slightly italicized. You know your dad writes like that don’t give me bullshit about your dad’s cursive, I know he’s hittin’ those block letters when you’re not looking.)

Anyway, the whole thing was quite endearing and the big breakup likely happened in the early 80s judging by the track listing and the tape. That’s a lot of time to find his Joni.

And when he did, I’m assuming he would have made this mix (well, minus the Danzig–that’s all me–but wtvr), which never made it to the Salvation Army in St-Henri (and into my pocket, jesus it was like $2 a tape there).

It’s songs to drive fast to, and cut people off, and fuck no my registration isn’t current!, etc.:

Today after work I drove slightly over the speed limit to Whole Foods got a half pint of black bean soup and some dessert with chocolate I don’t even know what it is I paid cash couldn’t decide what to listen to on the way home decided on Zeppelin drove slightly over the speed limit home parked my Volvo locked the door realized my parking was shit unlocked the door fixed it locked the door walked home while holding my keys in a way that gives me equal access to the one that opens my building door and the pepper spray on the end of the keychain locked my apartment door fed my cats ate the soup even though I wasn’t hungry ate the dessert even though I didn’t really like it kicked something that was in my way on the floor that was probably clothes or a dirty plate went to bed.
