In brief, the main methods of using plant material to draw love are: carrying the substance on your person in a locket or a sachet, boiling the herb and sprinkling the residual water around your residence, putting a sprig of it under your bed or in your pillow and burning it as incense. Bay: The leaves, which represent “the glory of love” are put in a bath and used to attract a soul mate. They can also be carried on the person for the same person.

Black Snakeroot: This is traditionally burned on charcoal or concealed on the person of a man to arouse a woman’s lust. It is the most commonly used ingredient in

Adam and Eve love spells.

Caraway Seeds: Carried on the person to increase lust in another. Place on your lover’s person they are said to stop infidelity.

Cardamom: Sprinkled as a spice on food or tucked in a sachet under the bed to arouse a lover. It is known as a compelling herb.

Cinnamon: Used in love sachets and sprinkled under the sheets of the bed to increase passion between two people. It is also burned as incense to speed things up in a love affair.

Coriander: Carried on the person, sprinkled under the sheets or used in food recipes to deepen and strengthen an existing love relationship.

Cumin: Used in recipes or sprinkled around the bed to keep a lover faithful to you.

Deerstongue: Used to attract another of the same sex. Usually is carried on the person in a locket or a sachet.

Dill: Sprinkled about the home to protect and strengthen an existing love.

Elecampane: Carried on the person as a love charm to attract a soul mate.

Frangipani: Can be bought as an oil or commercial incense. The flowers are used to gain the confidence or trust of a person that you desire. Mildly compelling.

Ginger: Used to arouse a reluctant lover or cure impotence. Typically sprinkled under the sheets. When added to other love drawing herbs it is said to accelerate desired results.

Hazel: Two twigs bound with a red ribbon is said to reconcile estranged lovers.

Jasmine: Can be bought as incense, oil or perfume. The flowers are rare, but if you can find them they are sprinkled on the bed or stuffed in a pillow to ensure a successful seduction.

Lavender: Kept as a plant in the home or stuffed inside a pillow, this sweet smelling herb is thought to straighten out marital problems and ensure fidelity.

Orange Blossoms: Used as oil, perfume, as a plant or in a sachet to attract a marriage proposal.

Myrtle: A sprig of myrtle kept in the bedroom, on a mirror or hung above the bed is said to increase fertility.

Poppy Seeds: Stuffed in a lover’s pillow, these are thought to make him dream of you.

Rosemary: Used in every way, ingested, as incense, as oil and in a sachet, to bind two people together in a gentle loving manner.

Sweet Pea: An attraction flower. The plant is kept in the garden to attract friends and lovers. Bathing in the flowers is thought to increase popularity.

Vanilla pods: Tucked under the bed, these are thought to lower another’s inhibitions. Carried on the person, vanilla’s vibration is thought to cause others to find you’re seductive. Can be bought commercially as perfume, incense and oil.

The Tree of Life – Western Red Cedar (Thuya plicata) is a major species which flourishes in northwestern Montana and because of its exceptional durability has become known as arbour-vitae ‘The Tree of Life’. Of Montana’s total land area (93 million acres), 17 coniferous tree species cover about 22.5 million acres. Of these 17 species, the Western Red Cedar stands out as the largest, oldest and perhaps the best of the many trees that grace Montana.

During winter in the high country of the Bitterroot Mountains, many feet of heavy snow blanket the land in white silence. Snow accumulations often exceed 20 feet. In years of heavy snow seasons, the spring melt is impressive. Creeks and streams are rapidly moving torrents that often undermine the roots and sometimes topple the giant forest trees. Western Red Cedars grow on hillsides in moist areas beside streams so are most often affected by high water run off.

In summer, huge cedar columns rise majestically out of a dense mat of lady fern. The dense canopy of trees allows filtered sunlight to penetrate the shadows, sweet, cool and moist, the air is as fresh as after a morning rain shower. In Montana Western Red Cedar is most abundant in the Bitterroot Mountains, the Mission Mountains and in the Seely-Swan area of the state. A day spent amongst the cedars is a delightful and memorable experience.

Western Red Cedar is one of the most important trees of the Pacific Northwest. Western Red Cedar grows from the coastal regions of southern Alaska south through the coastal ranges of British Columbia through western Washington and Oregon to California. In British Columbia, the species grows east to the western slope of the Continental Divide and thence south into the Selkirk and Bitterroot Mountains of Idaho and Montana.

Despite its name, the Western Red Cedar is not a cedar at all and the name pertains to the western distribution and cedar-like appearance. Western Red Cedar tree is actually a member of the Cypress family. When Western Red Cedar is approximately 250 years old it is about 100 to 175 feet tall and up to 8 feet in diameter. Western Red Cedar can live to more than 1000 years.

The leaves are small, overlapping scale-like that form sprays in opposite patterns; dark green in color. The Western Red Cedar produces 3/4” inch brown cones. The tree’s bark is cinnamon-red on young stems and a silvered-gray on old trunks. The bark is fibrous and shedding. The tender leaves of young cedar are an important food source for deer and elk.

Western Red Cedar has been called the cornerstone of the northwest Indian culture. Few other trees have had such an impact and the tree has an extensive history of use by the indigenous people of North America.

No one can say with any certainty when Native Americans first began working with cedar. Archaeological evidence unearthed in British Columbia suggests that it may have been over 5,000 years ago. Its straight grain, workability and resistance to decay were significant assets in the wet and variable climate of the Pacific Northwest.

Red cedar wood was used to make poles, houses, masks, helmets, armor, boxes, utensils, tools and many other art and utility objects. Coastal tribes used more cedar items than the interior tribes of Washington, Idaho and Montana as they used fallen trees to build giant canoes and totem poles.

Red Cedar branches are very pliable and have great tensile strength. The red-colored bark of the Western Red Cedar was easily removed from live trees in long, thin strips. These strips were dried and beaten until soft and spun into yarn. From this fiber weavers created clothing, blankets, baskets, rope and nets. Branches and roots were also used in basket making and for heavier-strength cordage.

The harvesting of bark was performed with the greatest of care because if the tree was completely stripped it would die. To prevent this, the harvester would only strip bark from trees which had not been stripped before.

After harvesting, the tree was not used for bark again. The process of stripping the bark was usually started with a series of small cuts at the base of the tree and the bark was peeled upwards.

To remove bark high up, a pair of platforms strung on rope around the tree were used and the harvester climbed the tree by alternating between them for support. Since red cedars lose their lower branches as all tall trees do, the harvester may climb many feet up into the tree by this method. The harvested bark could be stored for quite some time as mold does not grow on it. The bark strips were moistened before unfolding and working. It was then split lengthwise into the required width and woven or twisted into shape.

Bark harvesting was mostly done by women of the tribe despite the danger of climbing many feet in the air, because they were the primary makers of bark goods. Today bark rope making is a lost art in many communities, although it is still practiced for decoration or used as an art media by many tribal artists.

Harvesting red cedars required elaborate ceremonies and included propitiation of the tree’s spirits as well as those of the surrounding trees. In particular, many people specifically requested the tree and its brethren not to fall or drop heavy branches on the harvester. Some professional loggers of Native American descent have mentioned that they offer silent prayers to trees which they fell, following in this tradition.

Medicinal Uses ~ Western Red Cedar

Native American tribes used the twigs, roots, bark and leaves and leaf buds of red cedar to treat a wide variety of different symptoms.

Internal uses include:

boiling limbs to make a tuberculosis treatment
chewing leaf buds for lung ailments
boiling leaves to make a cold and cough remedy
chewing leaf buds to relieve symptoms of toothache pain
making an infusion to treat stomach pain and dysentery
making a bark infusion to treat urinary discomfort
making an infusion of the seeds to treat fever using a weak infusion
internally to treat rheumatism and arthritis

External uses include:

making a decoction of leaves to treat rheumatism
washing with an infusion of twigs to treat venereal disease
making a poultice of boughs or oil to treat rheumatism
making a poultice of boughs or oil to threat bronchitis
oil from inner bark to treat skin rashes, fungal infections and warts
using shredded bark to cauterize and prevent infection in wounds

Along with sweetgrass and sage, Western Red Cedar was used in smudges to purify and cleanse. The essential oil of the aromatic cedar is used today as a significant ingredient in incense, candles and air fresheners.

Green Building

For centuries artisans and builders have valued Western Red Cedar for its natural beauty, durability, strength and aroma. Unfinished cedar has richly textured grain with colors ranging from rich sienna browns, mellow ambers and reddish cinnamons. Its warm coloring is complimented by a uniform, fine-grained texture and is virtually resin and pitch free.

Western Red Cedar’s unique aroma comes from naturally occurring thujaplicins in its heartwood. These compounds resist moisture and are toxic to decay-causing fungi or mold and resists invading insects. Thujaplicins preserve the wood and prevents rot. Plants of all kinds (including trees), herbs and roots have been used for centuries to draw money to a person or bring prosperity to a home.

There are several ways to use a plant in this manner:

You can carry some of the substance on you.

This can be as easy as putting a tiny bit of the herb in a tiny plastic bag and put in your pocket. An easy way is to put a pinch of the herb into a locket.

Sew a sachet or pouch.

You can buy ready made sachets or pouches that you can use for this purpose, but you can also sew a small one using an appropriately colored material. Green and yellow are popular colors associated with prosperity and money one. These sachets are then tucked under the bed or somewhere in the home, worn on a string around the neck, put in a purse or wallet or concealed somewhere in the home. Some people simply fill a potpourri jar with the appropriate herbs and leave it in a prominent place in the house.

The simplest “Earth, Water, Air, Fire” Ritual is to boil the herb for a while in the water.

The Herbs are the earth, the water is in the pot, the air is the steam and the fire element is the stove. Occasionally stir the herb in the water while thinking of your magical intention. Strain the plant material from the liquid and sprinkle it around or outside the home.

Use them as Incense.

Some plants are hypnotics so I don’t really recommend this unless you are certain that the herb is not toxic once set alight. Traditionally though, herbs are set alight on charcoal burners and the smoke allowed to waft through the house.

Here are some of the more popular herbs used to draw prosperity and money. Most are available in your garden or from stores, but there are occult shops and apothecaries that carry herbs in jars:

Alfalfa – Known traditionally as the “good luck” herb I recommend tucking a sprig of this in your purse or in a locket. When combined with other money drawing herbs in a sachet it is thought to reinforce the other substance’s powers.

Allspice – Can be carried on the person or burned as incense or sprinkled in the four corners of the house. It is thought to attract business luck or success.

Bayberry – Bayberry can be bought commercially as a candle Ö“A bayberry candle burned to the socket – brings luck to the home and puts money in the pocket.” It can also be bought as incense.

Basil – Soaking basil leaves in water for three days and then sprinkling the water at your business premises is thought to attract financial success. The leaves can also be carried with you.

Bay Leaves – Bay leaves increase intuition and are good if you are looking for a promotion or a job. Tuck some under your mattress or boil them and sprinkle the water around your home. Hallucinogenic so I do not recommend you burn these.

Chamomile – Washing your hands in chamomile tea is thought to bring gamblers luck. Drinking the tea is thought to bring luck and prosperity.

Cloves – Cloves can be burned on charcoal, tucked in a sachet or put in your purse to draw money. An ancient money and protection ritual is to stick an orange with the heads of cloves stuck on pins and hang it on a ribbon in the kitchen so your cupboards are never bare.

Cinnamon: A very handy kitchen spice that can be used “in a pinch” to bring quick money, it can be bought as incense or burned on charcoal or sprinkled in a cash register or wallet to bring business.

Citronella: The leaves are thought to be good for attracting business and also smell lovely in a potpourri. Citronella is, however, toxic to birds – so avoid burning it in the house if you have feathered friends in your menagerie.

Five-Finger Grass (also known as Cinquefoil): This lemony grass can be burned, hid in a potpourri or carried on your person. It is the standard ingredient in most money drawing incenses.

Grains of Paradise: These little round seeds are carried in the purse or wallet or tucked in a sachet under the pillow to bring luck and guidance in career or money matters.

Honeysuckle: The live and dried flowers are used to attract luck business and prosperity.

Irish Moss: This is seaweed that can be bought in Caribbean stores. It is traditionally used to make a sweet drink. It is also carried in sachets to bring money to the bearer.

Juniper Berries: Associated with Jupiter, the berries of the juniper tree are said to attract luck, good fortune and business success.

Mint: All the mints (spearmint, peppermint) are used to attract good spirits and speed good fortune to the bearer.

Patchouli: Added to prosperity herb mixes to reinforce the manifestation power of your wishes. Can be bought as an incense, it has a commanding component to it.

Strawberry Leaves: Carried on the person and used to draw fortunate circumstances into a person’s life.

Squill Root: If you can find this, it is said to be one of the most powerful roots used to draw money to the bearer.

Tonka Beans: Tonkas are large dried beans that protect against poverty and that are just considered plain lucky. Place a bean in your purse, near your computer or under your phone – anywhere where you need luck in business. Avoid burning these.

Ayurveda, a Sanskrit name which means “knowledge” or “science of life”, is the science of living in harmony with nature. Balancing the doshas

A core principle of Ayurveda is that the human body contains three bio-energies called doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), which, along with other elements, make up the mind and body. An imbalance of these doshas can lead to illness and maintaining or restoring the balance of the doshas is a fundamental purpose of Ayurvedic medicine.

The importance of burning incense

While the burning of any aromatic incense can promote well-being and enhance mood, the purpose of Ayurvedic incense is to have specific effects on the mind and body at a deeper level. In line with holistic principles of Ayurvedic medicine, herbs and other natural elements are combined in a way that can balance one or more dosha, thus creating a healthier mind and body.

Special preparation

The standard preparation of incense for aromatherapy purposes is quite simple. The base, usually a mixture of tree bark powder, sandal and ground vegetable coal, is mixed with water to form a paste, rolled, dried and then immersed in a compound of aromatic oils. Ayurvedic preparation differs in that natural essential oils are added before rolling. The paste is made from the base compound of aromatic elements extracted from roots, bark, fruit, and resin, mixed with water and then the blend of essential oils is added. The mixture is rolled and left to dry. This special preparation gives Ayurvedic incense a unique scented fragrance.

Examples of Ayurvedic Incense

Some examples of typical Ayurvedic incense preparations and their effects include:

• Costen: Has a refreshing effect and acts on a subtle level lifting the spirit.
• Jatamansi: Noted for its harmonising, sedative, and mental tuning properties.

Those amazing sticks that are imbued with fragrant oils and are used to send forth aromatic wafts of curling smoke have a long history dating back to approximately 4000 BC, but seriously, we love incense for one reason and that’s because it smells wonderful. However, it’s important and sometimes a lot of fun to take a look at where these marvelous inventions that give us such pleasure came from.

Truly, since way before hippies and flower children were even a twinkle of a twinkle of a twinkle in their ancestor’s eye, incense has been used by the human race to cleanse the air with its purifying scents. Ancient civilizations and nearly all cultures have used incense in their religious rituals, embalming rites and in honor of their ancestors. There are even many references to incense in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

Okay, so, we’ve come to the conclusion that incense is really, really old, but now you might be asking yourself, “How is it made?” Well, the answer isn’t simple because it depends on what type of incense you’re talking about. Some incense sticks are made from different varieties of raw wood, herbs, sticks soaked in aromatic oils or even powders and pastes. But to keep things simple, let’s focus on stick incense that you burn, because that’s what people generally think of when they hear the word “incense”.

Modern incense just like ancient incense; has roughly five ingredients: aromatic powder, wood pulp, an adhesive or binder (probably gum arabic) and wood pulp. These ingredients are generally mixed together to form a paste that can be rolled onto a thin sandalwood stick. The mixture and stick are allowed to dry and voilá, incense! Commercially, the way incense is made is very similar, except that mechanical processes are used to take the wet incense mixture and form it around a cored stick or press it into a mold.

The great thing about incense is that you can generally find an aroma that suits your nose or your needs. Even better are the types of incense available. Incense sticks is probably the most popular form of incense, followed by cone-shaped incense. Both are easily burned and come in hundreds of different scents. Generally, these types of incense burn fairly quickly, maybe lasting from twenty to forty-minutes. If you want something that burns a lot slower, you may be interested in spiral incense. Amazingly, this stuff can burn for hours or even days!

The last type of incense that we’re going to look at is powdered incense. Most of the time, this incense is reserved for religious ceremonies. It takes a lot of prep time and it’s not exactly the most convenient type of incense to burn for those of us who are in a hurry or just want something we can light up with the quick flick of lighter or match.

Hopefully this has shed a bit of light on the wonderful world of incense. The next step you should take is to get out and make your own or find your favorite aromatic “flavour” and light it up.
