The project I needed to finish two years ago. A French Game Table, the first one went to the auction at IGMA school. I was going to make two of them actually, but I didn’t have enough time to finish it. Besides, I realized that I needed to improve the overall design of the brass mounts, my porcelain painting skills needed an upgrade as well. The inside mount is designed and stitched by me on a 72 count silk gauze. The insert of such a complex form made me cry several times while mounting it, I’m still not very happy about it, but here it is. Sometimes I felt overwhelmed with the whole thing to be honest. I’m happy it’s done. Time to turn the page and move on.

I really like this new version, I think I’ll use pear wood for the background, something bright like maple or birch for decoration and makore wood for the outside border.
Meanwhile, the porcelain plaques are finished, at least I think they are for now But I don’t have the photos yet, stay tuned.

It’s been two years since my last post here. This year was full of events. Events that were so unbelievable, that I couldn’t get back to my workshop again. All my thoughts, concerns shifted to a real life, my family. Through all these years I was making posts in other social media platforms, it seemed at the time that it would be always like that. I’d go to the shows in April-May, then IGMA school, maybe another show in autumn, or even exam to pass. Anyway, most of my plans don’t matter anymore.
But I still make miniatures and intend to do so in the future.
I’d love to show some of my miniature projects that were finished quite some time ago, but weren’t shown here in my blog.

Let’s start with these two Italian footstools, you can find a process of making them in one of my videos on my Youtube channel.

The first painted lacquer cabinet, that was made for PIMA awards at Kensington Dollshouse Festival, the second one was made later.

Another Italian project, and armchair, quite complex carving, lots of gold and oil painting.

One of my favorite and one of the smallest projects:

Another favorite, lots of details, that I thought I’d never be able to achieve.

Another Italian piece, this time in scagliola technique. I’m really proud that I was able to make it in miniature.

A French side table, made for IGMA school auction.

There’s so much more to show. Till the next time!

As I wrote many times I hate working with metal, but this is the only thing that interests me now. Funny enough, I love brass casting, maybe because the only thing I have to do is model making.
Anyway, one day I notice those wonderful vintage drafting tables and architect’s tables and fall in love with them. It’s a very unconventional item, not many people want them in their dollhouses, but it was a chance for me to try metal construction. It became so easy for me planning a piece for woodworking purposes that I thought metal would be something similar for me. Oh boy, I was wrong, big time.
The table I made is simple, but there are couple of things that maybe not so easy to make – gears for height adjustment, table top angle adjustment. The parts are quite big, so you cannot just solder them together (and of course I thought I could when I was making a 3d model).

Here are casted pieces

All the parts needed cleaning and fitting. The most important was fitting, because during casting process the part shrinks a bit.
Overall, it wasn’t an easy project, I don’t think I’ll make another table like this again, I mean this model, because I found several modeling mistakes during assembling, which I had to fix.

Some of the parts are turned on a lathe. So, even if you do brass casting, still there’s huge amount of hand work.

The last part – brass blackening.

Here you can see a technical drawing of the table on the table:

Despite all the difficulties I had to face, I won’t stop. I have a piece I’m pretty excited about. It’ll be a lot of work, metalwork!

After pretty successful experience with higher count petit point, I decided that I can make another screen, but this time on 90 count silk gauze. I found this screen in a book dedicated to Thomas Chippendale 300th anniversary of birth. It’s pretty tall 169.5cm high, the screen itself is pretty large too.

I should also say that the original screen is fully made of wood, in my version a pole and a finial are made of brass. The finial was traditional too, but I made a parrot

The screen is stitched on a 90 count silk gauze, with Chinese silk floss.

The base of the screen is made of pearwood. The finial initially was pretty simple:

Then it became a parrot (my own model brass casted)

It took me 7 months to stitch the screen, 1-2 hours a day, everyday. After finishing it, I said to myself that I’ll never make something like this ever again, but I guess it’s pretty obvious for me now, that I’ll be stitching another piece soon. And I know what it’s going to be!

The carved elements were gilted, the rest of the table is painted with acrylic gouache. Later during Chicago show I was lucky to speak to Robert Dawson, who suggested that inner parts of the table, a vase and the flowers were made of bronze. So I decided to make a new version of this table. With the real marble table top and cast bronze parts. But it’ll be a different color. I think that both table and marble top will be beige.

I’m a fan of on of the books on European furniture, almost every piece there is on my to-do list. This table happened to be the first one I actually made.
A bit of process below, I made several carved elements, all of them gone to my “virtual” trash bin. I wanted the carving to be more expressive.

I also realized that there was no chance to find any local craftsman who could cut marble or malachite for me, so I had to make my own “marble/malachite” out of epoxy resin. I made three table tops, the one on the left I liked the most.

Recently I started working on a commode I wanted to make for quite some time. I’m getting to the phase of my dream projects! First, Studley workbench, then Galle vitrine, and now this commode. I’m happy to be able to make things I wanted to make eight years ago when I started building miniature furniture. It’s a huge step for me, so I’m very excited.

I’ll be making two commodes. The first one is partially ready for assembling and making drawers.

The silk for the chairs is quite heavy and hard to sew, so I had to glue it. I really like the result!

Внутри подушек есть мдф листы, поэтому получились кресла довольно тяжелыми.

New chapter, new skill for me – miniature needlepoint.

Actually, I’ve tried stitching pillows and such on a silk gauze, but I’ve never did anything specific for my furniture stuff. So several months ago I found this screen that inspired me to try to make my own needlepoint design and stitch it. The screen was stitched on 72 count silk gauze with Chinese silk and Piper’s silk. It took me about a month or so, meanwhile I did a 3d model and only now I started actually build it.
I also decided to make two screens, after I finished stitching the first one I changed a design a bit and color scheme too, so it’s not finished yet. It’s a bit finer – 86 count gauze and Chinese silk.

Both screens are made of pearwood, with this one I didn’t know which finish to choose, my Instagram followers, all of them, said I should leave it as it was, just bare wood, no paint, no gilding, and that’s what I did, light finish with Danish oil.
There was a lot of carving involved like these flowers, and this one is actually too big, I needed 1,5mm in diameter.

The thickness of a frame is only 3мм.

After assembling the vitrine, I covered the wood with linen oil, then a bit of paint to give it an old look. Then – Danish oil. In couple days I’ll sand it and add another layer of oil.

I’ll be making another vitrine just like this one and hope to bring it to Chicago show in 2019, so if you’re interested in purchasing the vitrine, drop me a line.

I was going to install them tonight too, but I just ran out of time. Anyways, as I said many times before, I'm not comfortable with metalworking. It's something I don't really like and understand but I need everytime I make some advanced piece of furniture. So I always tell to myself that I like it Oh yes, Victoria, you like it, that's why you have this Sherline lathe, lol, that's why you want to buy a Sherline mill but never have enough money for that! So two days ago I tried to make these hinges, they were too thin and fragile, and I didn't have a 0.45 mm drill bit. So I changed my plan this time. Thicker brass sheet, bigger diameter for the brass rod – 0.8mm one. I used my coordinate table that comes with the mill to cut out the outline of the hinges, then I cut them with my jeweller's saw and shaped them with files. Drilled the holes, the rest is obvious. They both look okay now, I'll see how they will work when I install them tomorrow. Wish me luck!
