Port Dickson International Triathlon 2025 : Race Report and A Personal Best

Been a while since I had a proper triathlon race - the last was Port Dickson International Triathlon (PDIT) 2022. And it seems there is a pattern here, prior to the 2022 race report, my last race was in 2019. Technically in the same years' quantum - 3 years. The 2022 race result (2:31) was a Personal Best compared to the last race in 2020 (2:41). Good news is, I am getting faster. Bad news is, I am also getting older.

Pre-amble

And here we are, on my 17th Port Dickson International Triathlon. A quick rewind; PDIT was my first triathlon. I have taken part in all of it except in 2016, 2023 and 2024 - they were due to work travel. 2021were a blank for everyone due to pandemic. It has been 20 years since with 17th appearances.

PDIT2025 Route

The cycling course has only changed once, the running course twice, maybe three times, and the swimming course has consistently been into the Admiral Cove Marina (with Admiral Cove changing name and ownership twice to Avillion group?) I can pretty much say timing created here is representative for the course for the past 23 years. And in Uncle Chan's spirit - we never get the actual distance but close. So if you are hard up for a solid 1.5km swim, 40km bike (this however, always remained accurate) and a 10km run - PD may not be the place for you.

BUT if you want to know what Hari Raya for Triathletes is, PDIT is the spot to be at. Historically, the race is a sold out with 2022 having close to 2200 participants. This year however, there were only 900 registered participants, sorely missing were the usual neighbours (Singaporeans) that likely gave this race a miss due to their General Election.

Last minute registration and logistics

Thank you, Sports Paragon and Zoot Sports Malaysia, for allocating the spot to race for me this year. As my son was signed up for a relay race with his Team Time Triathlon teammate, cost of racing has now doubled if I want to race. Racing fees aren't cheap anymore due to increases in cost to manage these events and the insurance to run them. I am very grateful and appreciate of the given slot, and that charted a comeback of sort for me in 2025.

Having said that, a small glitch happened as my name was missed out in the official list due to some technical error. I was technically, the LAST person to be registered and was given the very last number on race day.

how late (of registration) was I? My bike rack has no number and basket, the last registered athlete was 729. I had the whole rack for myself!

With my entry confirmed a few hours before the official race kit collection started, I booked a hotel room for the family. It is also unofficially the first family getaway - and a little of me got a flashback on how the family followed me for most, if not all my races since they were baby. With my eldest now taking up triathlon as sports, it is a full circle for us now with two in the family racing.

We drove down to PD on Saturday after lunch and running some usual errands, arriving just in time before the race kit ends. Son went for the team dinner since he has a coupon for dinner, while I took the family to check into the hotel we are staying and onwards to dinner of seafood, no less. I managed to book Regency Pacific, which is 6 minutes' drive, located at Teluk Kemang. With good pricing and a decent, clean, well equipped and working room, it was worth the RM260 we paid for a night.

Port Dickson International Triathlon 2025: Race Report Finally

Race ready physically. I have been consistent with my training, particularly my runs. I've cycled at a comfortably hard effort once a week, swim once a week to gain water confidence and water feel. Averaging 7 to 8 hours of weekly training. Sufficiently sufficient to "race". Race experience around my belt, knowing exactly what to do and could mentally run the race in my head.

Except I wasn't mentally ready.

When my sponsor told me they may had not managed to register me a day before the race kit collection, there were tinge of relief. I am not going to lie to say that if it did not happen (to race), I am perfectly ok. There is however, a bigger part of me that was in disappointment if indeed I do not get to race.

It felt like it was 2005 all over again; the fear of being in open water (I never swam in open water until race day of 2005), the concern if my decade old TT bike on 5 years old tubular tire would hold up (last seen action in 2019 Ironman Langkawi with THREE punctures!)

And for the run, despite having the best gear from Brooks Running Malaysia (the fancy plated Hyperion Elite 4 PB), I decided on using the Hyperion Max 2 because experience tells me that plated shoe advantage will be negated when running on soft ground aka sandy beach.

But, I wasn't mentally ready.

I was fearful despite over two decades of racing.

I shared my fear with my Home Binister, which understood where I was coming from. Putting things into perspective with significant reduction of training volume since my last Ironman (in 2019 when my fitness was at top notch, apart from being 6 years younger). Balancing life and work, priorities, death, pandemic, job security, public exams.

It is only in the last 18months that some structures were put in place to allow me that once a week of cycling and swimming.

And that is hardly enough. Those in the sports will know this is not even sufficient.

The 2022 Personal Best timing of 2:31:17 where I achieved thanks to my second peak of fitness (as it was a comeback race after pandemic) seems impossible to reach. Definitely not with the super low training volume on bike and swim - my expectation was to finish.

And to finish safely.

My son will be taking part in a relay event. Two of his teammate will swim and bike, he will pick up the run. On question why he is not attempting the full olympic distance, the answer is he is not ready yet. His training has been very much focused on shorter race distance.

I stayed back for the race briefing because Uncle Chan (he is turning 80 this year) session always entertaining. He has been doing this for the past 23 years and he has seen how the sports progressed. PDIT was where i started my triathlon, and only right that i try my best to race it every year when I can. Of course, i take the opportunity to introduce my son to him.

Right after the race briefing, we all went back to our hotel room to rest. Triathletes are fun people, they will usually be in bed early - always the light of a party.

After checking my bike and making sure I play the transition setup in my mind, the family went to sleep by 10.30pm. I slept on the floor because I forgotten how big my kids has grown. Poor Home Binister has to share space with my daughter that is at 170cm tall now. Obviously the other 176cm boy has the privilege of having the bed for himself.

I was having dinner the night before and I received a call from Samantha, Uncle Chan's dear daughter, reminding me to exchange the swim cap from blue (above 50 years old) to grey (40-49 years old). Because you remember right? I was the LAST legitimate registered. 730.

To make it funnier, I am actually registered under the 60+ category, I am not even making it up. But of course, this was corrected on Sam's end (as it should for me in 40-49 age group)

A quick drive from hotel to race ground took us about 10minutes including loading and unloading the bike from the roof rack. I was lucky that I found a decent distance parking and was amongst the first to rack the bike in.

Having years of experience racing meant I have the transition setup in my mind and require very little "thinking". If you are racing for the first time, and wonder how they are or should be setup, here are some tips

All laid out

Bike:

I like to rack it under the nose of my saddle. Easy lift and push out to transition.
Some like to hook their brakes lever over the pole, but at the risk of breaking (the more fragile) lever.
Some on TT bikes like to hook it using their rear bottle cage - which essentially is similar to the nose-hook I did above.
Clip your cycling computer if you are using it, or strap your watch on the handlebar if you are not swimming with it. Press the app/function to allow for satellite lock, so it stays hot in terms of location/GPS lock. You can exit that mode and off/standby the device.
I like to rest my helmet over the handlebar, with both straps opened on the side. This way, it's ready to be worn immediately I am at the bike in T1.
Release the helmet rear adjustment clip so you can slip in easier.
If you are wearing a sunglasses, it is also best to leave it near the helmet/handle by hooking it over or balancing it if you are confident.
Hydration/Fuels in bottle can be mixed now - bearing in mind some high carb fuels is advisable to be mixed only on the race morning/racking to maintain freshness.
Make sure your repair kit, tubes, pump, co2 head, co2 canisters are all secured where it is supposed to be. It could be the reason you finish or DNF if you encounter mechanical/puncture.
I like to leave my cycling cleats out on the ground and not clipped to the bike pedal as I do not fly-mount (because I sucks at it and do not want to risk falling).
Because I leave my cycling cleats out, I strategically place one fuel/gel in the shoe. This way, I will be reminded to take one while wearing/putting on my cycling gear on the way out of T1.
Plus one extra to take midpoint of the cycling league.

How the shoes were laid out

Run:

Speed lace (using rubberised bands) your shoe and make sure the tongue is placed correctly/not folded as you want to slip in as smooth/fast as you can.
If you are not using speed lacing, just make sure your shoe laces and entrance is in a position to allow for fast entry.
I leave my race belt and and number on my shoe so I will remember to wear it the first thing back from bike. Be reminded you can be disqualified if you run without the bib/number.
I strategically leave gel/fuel in my shoe, similarly to my cycling.
Plus one extra gel/fuel to carry when running.
If you are planning to use cap - place it on top of the shoe.
If you are planning to use a sunglass - place it on top of the shoe as well.

Swim ready (take note of the race sticker number and ankle race chip)

Swim:

Buoy in good condition and suitable for the purpose of your race. Most local races made it compulsory for safety reason. So consider to invest in one that you are comfortable, or give you comfort that it will help if you are in state of distress in water.
Swim googles - clear is good but tinted is better. It helps you manage glare should the sun position and your breathing position is on the same side. You do not want to have the sunlight shooting into your eyes as you are up (on your side) to breathe.
Swim cap compulsory in most, if not all races. It help the organiser segregate by age group and aid in visual for the safety crew.
If you are sensitive to the powder that are used in these swimming cap, washing it the night before with soap water will remove almost all and you won't have watery eyes or sinus reaction due to the preservative/powder that prevent the rubber/latex/silicon from sticking while in storage.

Stick On race number:

This is the trickiest part for many first timer. The worry/anxiety of getting this wrong.
First, be reminded that each sticker is stored in their individual wrapper. I suggest you remove all of it out of the wrapper.
Secondly, make sure your skin is clean, free of lotion/sunscreen and dry. Wear your trisuit/top before applying it.
Next, decide, based on the organiser's recommendation, which side of the arm you will be sticking this. For this race, I had it on my right forearm; because my trisuit is with sleeve covering up to my elbow, and I wear my device on left hand.
Prepare a wet cloth or a small bottle/cup water.
Now, take the number in order of your race bib, remove the plastic backing and position it over your forearm.
Repeat for the next few numbers.
Use the edges of the sticker paper (the white paper backing) as a guide.
Now, the fun begin.
Take the wet cloth and place it over the sticker, saturating (all of) them until the white paper backing become soaked. Alternatively slowly pouring water from bottle or cup over the paper/sticker with intend to saturate it.
Leave it for 15s.
Lastly, remove the wet paper and you have the sticker on your (fore)arm!
If all the above fail... just head over to the race secretariat and they will happily write your number using a permanent marker pen :D

Bonus:

No race belt? Triathlete on budget? There is always the option to use old shoe laces as race belt - lightweight and a fashion statement.
Race chip? Organiser usually will give you the RFID with the Velcro (fancy) or one time use RFID with permanent sticker band.
The permanent sticker band is trickier if you wear socks... you have to make the decision if you plan to wear your socks over or under this chip...

Swim - 1.5KM

Daunting. I am never a good swimmer. Actually, I am not even a swimmer. If you are like me, then the best preparation is to gain water confidence. And that usually meant spending time in the pool, doing laps and learning to be comfortable and calm. Triathlon swim start involve flailing arms, kicking legs, pushing and climbing over others (or being climbed over). Just remember it is as scary for you as it for others. This meant one has to remember to always have great respect for yourself and others around you.

Assuming you got this far in reading my long race report and incoherent bids, you are as ready as me to jump into the water for the swim start. The race was scheduled to start at 7.30am with the first wave age group 18-29 battling it out. This young group translate to stronger athletes which will typically takes 20mins to complete the 1.5km swim route. Then it is followed by the 30-39 group, 40-49 group, 50-59 and 60-69 group. Last group to leave will be the ladies (no age group) and the relay swimmers. Each group were set off in 3-mins interval. It is expected that the last swimmer will complete the course in 45mins.

The swim route will take us out to the sea for about 200meters before we turn left and swim towards/into the Marina boat bay. The route or mechanics of the swim has never changed. And that meant one would be circumvent the inner part of the Marina before heading out and turning right towards the beach. In my years of racing PD, it has always been low tide if the swim flag off by 7.30am. This meant the triathletes will have less distance to swim in totality, usually between 200m and 300m less. It is not unusual for us to "walk" or "run" or "dolphin dive" a substantial distance on the way out, and do the same on the way back due to the tide condition. For this reason alone, PD swim course will always be under distance, but no less than 1.1km on the average.

My swim was rather uneventful - I did 90% freestyle and tried to breathe on both sides on a 3 strokes basis. It worked when there isn't many people around me and I had to breathe on one side should the water splashes are more prevalent on the opposite side. Simple reason was I do not want to digest more seawater than I should or to disrupt the swimming rhythm.

Sighting was not an issue if you are NOT the front swimmer. Just saying. Because if you are in mid-pack (like me), you just need to follow the person in front of you. Of course you will need to have faith in their sighting as well, else you (both, or more following) will go off course. It is also not unusual for that to happen. All part of the plan!

As I got out of the water, a quick glance on the watch tells me I completed the swim in under 30minutes I knew it was under-distanced. Maybe perhaps Uncle Chan's idea of swim is including the longish 400m run to the bike.

Part of the reason of the tracking to start and stop mid-water was the build in auto-lap function in Garmin FR965 where the user don't have to press the LAP button. The downside of it is that it will auto-lap when it sense changes in movement (from swimming to running, running to cycling, and cycling to running)

Transition 1

I felt a great relief having exited the water safely and I realised I was in mid-pack. I removed the swimming cap and goggles, unclipped the buoy and ran/jog to my bike. Looking for Aisle-G and knowing exactly where my bike was further reduce the confusion one would get in Transition.

Once I was at my bike, I took the gel/fuel, took a gulp of liquid with fuels, wore my cycling cleats, stood up, put on my helmet. I could see from the corner of my eyes Nigel buckling in his helmet and getting ready to push his bike out.

And that was when I got stuck a little there. A noob mistake not to release the rear adjustment so I could put on the helmet easier. So, I did spend a bit more time as everyone start leaving the T1.

The cheering from the spectators side were loud and I realised it was my Home Minister and the other Team Time parents.

"Sorry! I was putting on make up!", I shouted as I ran past them and mounted my bike for the next 40km league.

Bike - 40KM

Since September 2014 - Boardman AiR TT 9.8

PD is a draft legal race, and there are three challenges with a draft legal race.

First, is the bike you can use and typically a TT bike is not recommended in a drafting race due to safety.
Secondly, unless you are have cycled in a big train/peloton group, chances are you would not know how to behave in one (ethiques)
Thirdly, unless you been cycling WITH the same group, there is no way you can predict what they will do when both your wheels are less than 10cm apart.

And that were exactly what I was worried for in PD cycling league. You will witness, see, hear of actual crashes, close calls, near misses and injuries.

For these reasons and as a seasoned triathlete that will usually use a TT bike, I will either stay alone, or not to be too bothered about people drafting me at the back. However, if i see people I am familiar with, I will often "invite" them for a drafting session. This usually meant sharing the work by being at the front to pull the peloton.

But with my slow swimming, those with similar cycling ability are already at least 3 or 4km away (or roughly about 7-9mins away).

Route elevation vs laps (10km)

PD route is rolling. There are fast flat sections and there are slight climbs (see the map above with hill icon) that are not too challenging as long you keep the speed and cadence. I passed a handful of folks and managed to get my friend Boon Sheng to work with me for 5km. I kept to 90% FTP (lactate threshold) and stayed in TT position.

Bike split every 10km

There are significant advantage using a lighter bicycle. I usually train with my old steel bike that weight in excess of 12kg. I know my average timing for 5km split is about 10 minutes, which brings me to 30km/h average at training. With a much lighter Boardman TT bike (approx 9kg), there will be significant weight advantage apart from aerodynamics.

Back to the cycling section, I rode most of the time solo (or at the front of a peloton) for safety reasons and never actually bothered with anyone hooking on the freespeed behind me. If I am much fitter on the bike, I would had used this to my advantage by pushing harder and burn those drafting me behind; there is still the run league that need to be completed.

the U-turn at KM20 signalled the moment I need to plan for my fuelling, hydration and plan for the next 20km. A calculated fuelling and hydration is important to keep your tank filled and your mental checked. Both were done successfully with the wrapper of the gel tucked back into my trisuit pocket. Reminder not to litter in race as it is punishable in major races - better to cultivate good habits without exceptions of the rule!

Cadence variance when riding solo (3/4 of the chart) vs in peloton (last 1/4)

How significant is cycling solo and in a peloton? The chart above showed exactly that. My first 30km was averaging around 34km/h and on the last 10km, a huge peloton showed up behind me and sucked me along. My average went from 34km/h to 38km/h!

Not only that, despite the faster speed, I did not need to keep the same cadence I did like the first 30km. You can see two things on the chart above.

Cadence for 30km was without breaks. I was pedalling all the way. Cadence in the last 10km has a lot of "coasting" but I was going faster than the first 30km.
There were more speed surge on the last 10km because I was trying very hard to stay away from rider than do not adhere to drafting ethiques...

The last 10km was pretty risky. I had people cutting in from the left, and there was already very little space around me as people were riding 3 to 4 abreast. Then I have people cutting RIGHT infront of me abruptly, forcing me to ride on my brakes (and effectively out of TT position, hands on brakes). The only way to get away was to surge forward and try to stay away.

And everytime I do that, the peloton will hang on because... well... everyone got sucked into the speed! 38km/h in a group of 30 people is insanely risky.

I was in two mind about dropping off and do my own thing, but at the same time adrenaline was rushing and It seems I may actually break the 67mins target on the bike for PD.

That was until the last 5km on the highway heading back turned out to be riskier as the traffic cones eats 1/4 of the one lane road. I decided to then stay on the RIGHT side closer to the right road shoulder to avoid hitting any cones on the left. I found out later that a friend actually hit one of the cone while in peloton, crashed and thankfully got away with bruises and nothing more serious, including minimal damages to his bike.

I got back from the bike safely, clocking just under 68 minutes with seconds to spare. Technically almost a minute slower than 2022 timing. The race wasn't over and I still have a lot of juice in the tank.

Cycle route

Some lessons and sharing for biking:

While riding a TT bike does give you advantage on speed, it is only true if you are able to tuck yourself into aero position most, if not all the time. Hence this is important for those choosing TT bike to hold that position at training and race. If you are unable to be in TT position most of the time, a properly fitted road bike will be more advantageous.

This include riding on any wheelsets deeper than 50mm - free speed only comes in after 35km/h. If you are unable to hold that speed most of the time, perhaps a more basic wheels will be suitable.

And lastly - safety above everything else. Chasing timing is great only if you did not crash or causes crashes/harm to other people. Be courteous!

Transition 2

"Go Van!", I heard my dear Home Binister shouting as I exited the roundabout and enter into Transition area. It was straight up easy with almost zero fatigue on the legs entering T2. No jelly legs and solid feel as I racked the bike, removed the helmet, stopped my Garmin cycling computer (that recorded near 40km cycling), disengage the BOA on my cleats.

I took another gel/fuel, removed the used gel wrapper and threw it on my transition area, stuck one unopened into my trisuit, wore my Brooks Hyperion Max 2, laced up, took a sip from my cycling bottle that is still 3/4 full and contain liquid fuels and off I went for the run.

No drama, just well calculated transition moves.

Run 10km

Triathlon is a runner's game. Many races has been won on the run. There is no lie here. It's amazing how the pro-Ironman athletes can run a solid 2:30 Marathon after their fast swim and bike after more than 5 hours racing. It's amazing to see how the olympian triathletes are able to cover their 10km run in timing less than 40mins convincingly. Upping your Bike-Run training is essential. It's a mental booster as you start your run strong and carry it on to the final line.

Having been pretty consistent with my running fitness, and incorporating running into days I cycle (or actually including cycling into my daily runs) has significantly boost my confidence.

Port Dickson run route has seen little changes since it's inception. In the past 10 years, half of the run was on beach area, which then meant you be running on softer and uneven ground. There were the running on the boardwalk for about 800m which was cancelled this year due to significant damage at this section. Uncle Chan then introduce an additional beach run to make up the distance.

I was contemplating the days before if I should wear the spanking brand new Hyperion Elite 4 PB that I just received the day before the race. The answer was NO because I hate to make a brand new shoe dirty as I want to take photos of it and write an unboxing review. :P

The actual reason was exactly what I wrote one paragraph above - sand, soft, uneven ground. A carbon plated shoe will not lend you any more advantage on those condition. PLUS, never ever try something new on race day, more so a new shoe that you never tried before and you are running sockless.

Going with the Hyperion Max 2 was a great choice. Cushioned sufficiently, responsive enough and provide a very stable ride over any surface, sand included.

The game plan with the run was to stick to my lactate threshold power. That would meant I should be able to wrap up this distance in about 45mins. Having my friend Shahrill coming to give support was great as he took video of me (hence photos of me while running here!).

As I picked up the pace and got into my comfort running zone, I started to overtake everyone that was ahead of me in the bike segment, including those I remember riding in the peloton with me.

The run was uneventful as well, which meant it was executed as planned. I had my last gel/fuel at the KM5 u-turn, took sips of water at two of the three water station, reminded myself that this is just like any other training. No cramps unlike APEX Duathlon, overall a great feel.

As I made the turn into the main road leading to finish, friends that I've known over the years was on the roadside cheering many of us on. A reminder why I am still doing this sports - the community is still relevant.

As I crossed the line, Uncle Chan was right ahead of me. I do not see anything more fitting that him to welcome me back, and to give me my finisher medal. With Razlan's voice echoing my name as I crossed the line - I am home again.

At that moment as I crossed the line, I knew why I am there again. It was a homecoming.

The Result

Diving into more details of each league showed that I came out of the water at position 181 (out of about 600 that raced Olympic distance that morning, including relay). I continue to gain position as I exited T1 and cycled. Very convincingly overtaking 30 triathletes that were ahead of me on the swim. I took my time a little more on T2, losing 4 spots (hey, got to look good for the camera right?) and wrapped up 78 people on the run.

It was a personal best. I was not any better prepared having not raced the past 2 years. I was equipped with experience and my consistency in training. With my son joining Team Time Triathlon, I find myself in a space where I have a chance to train while he trains under supervision of great coaches. I've find myself with chances to swim since I am already at the pool, I rekindled with my bike and look to riding to gain some level of bike confidence and fitness back, and most of all, I continue to be motivated to keep improving for myself because that is all that I can control.

Am I happy with the result? Of course. I never would had imagine erasing an already very strong 2:31:17 in 2022. Bearing in mind I was much fitter back then.

But you know what was the cherry on top of the ice cream? Seeing my son racing in the same race I do and being better than me many times over.

KLSCM inks partnership renewal with Standard Chartered

Announces new Gold Sponsors, finish point and race categories

KUALA LUMPUR (16 April 2025) – The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) is set to return to the Kuala Lumpur city centre for its 17th edition on 4 and 5 October 2025. Runners taking part in this year’s races can expect exciting changes and developments.

Earlier today, Dirigo Events, the owner and organiser of the KLSCM, announced that Standard Chartered Malaysia has renewed its title sponsorship of the country’s premier distance running event for four more years. The partnership will extend into 2028.

It was also revealed that global sports brand ASICS and Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) have signed on as Gold sponsors with naming rights to the Half Marathon and 10km respectively. The Half Marathon will now be known as the ASICS Half Marathon, while the 10km race will be called the Pantai KL 10km. ASICS is also the official footwear and apparel partner for the KLSCM.

Rainer Biemans, the Director of Dirigo Events and Project Director of the KLSCM, divulged the news along with several other much anticipated updates at a press conference held at Stadium Merdeka this morning. Also present at the event were Mak Joon Nien, CEO of Standard Chartered Malaysia; Erica Lam, CEO of Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Regional Chief Executive Officer (Central), IHH Healthcare Malaysia and Boon Tib Soom Nik, Country Manager, ASICS Malaysia.

Biemans disclosed that KLSCM 2025 will also be moving its start and finish points from its regular venue of Dataran Merdeka, as the area is undergoing significant upgrading and maintenance work in the second half of the year. This year’s race will now start within in the Kuala Lumpur city centre (actual venue to be announced soon) and finish at the iconic and historical Stadium Merdeka.

“We are delighted to be able to continue this synergistic partnership with Standard Chartered for another chapter. Our shared values and commitment along with the growth of running culture in the country has seen us connect with many running communities over the years and we look forward to taking Malaysia’s premier running event to even higher levels,” said Biemans.

This year’s event also sees the introduction of the Run Club Challenge and State Youth Challenge. The Run Club Challenge is a category specifically for running clubs in Malaysia where they may send teams of four runners to compete in the Full Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon and Pantai KL 10km. Participation in this inaugural race is by invite only where clubs must meet certain criteria.

For the State Youth Challenge, young Malaysian runners aged 15 to 24 years old will be able to represent a Malaysian state of their choice in the Full Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon and Pantai KL 10km – the prize money will go to the state athletics associations for their youth programmes.

KLSCM 2024 saw the running event reaching new milestones including a record number of participants (close to 42,000 runners), incorporating the Medic on the Run programme, and surpassing the RM1 million mark in funds raised for charity through the Run For A Reason (RFAR) programme.

The Medic on the Run programme which was introduced in 2024 to provide medical assistance on-the-go to runners immediately in case of any accidents or emergencies during the race will continue this year. It will see a team of medical professionals, which includes doctors, nurses and paramedics, running alongside the participants, equipped with portable AED machines and First Aid Packs.

As a race that race that chooses to make a difference, the KLSCM has always included a platform for runners to transform their every step into a powerful catalyst for change by raising funds for causes close to their hearts. At the heart of the event lies the RFAR charity

Initiative, which has played an important role in working with the running community in a collective effort to raise funds for deserving charities.

To date, the running community has contributed close to RM9 million in funds through this platform to help the charity partners make a positive difference in Malaysian society. The beneficiary charities for 2025 are Futuremakers by Standard Chartered, Hospis Malaysia, Kechara Soup Kitchen and Teach for Malaysia.

Registration for KLSCM 2025 opens tomorrow – priority registration will run from 17 to 21 April while the RFAR and the Corporate Challenge sign-ups will run from 17 April to 31 July. Priority registration is open to runners who have competed in at least eight previous editions, as well as faster runners who met the required finishing times in 2023 or 2024. Public registration opens on 22 April and closes on 31 July or when race slots sell out.

KLSCM is also continuing its sustainability journey and working on being a greener race. Ongoing efforts including reducing its carbon footprint and waste through the use of refillable bottles for water, as well as composting the enormous amounts of fruits like bananas, pears and apples given to runners, and creating awareness about the importance of recycling and waste reduction.

KLSCM 2025 will also see the return of official partners 100 Plus, Counterpain, High 5 Nutrition, Seiko and TudungPeople. The event is also supported by venue host Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Malaysia Athletics, the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police.

Brooks Hyperion Max 2 Unboxing and Review

Two years since the launch of the original Brooks Running Hyperion Max, one extra season of new colorway and a few thousands kilometers in them, the Hyperion Max 2 (HM2) has finally landed. For record, The Hyperion Max (HM) has been my rotation for those fast days and uptempo days. I have worn 3 pairs of these with each lasting over 1000km and only replaced because I did not want to embarrass my sponsor by wearing really worn out but still functional trainers.

Hello! It's been a while!

The HM2 was first viewed during the Sports paragon trade show in March 2024 post Chinese New Year and needless to say, a bunch of us has seen it and was excited with it. Brooks Running has finally introduced a nylon plated shoes that is meant as an everyday trainer - bonus, it is a legit uptempo shoe.

The HM2 made it's debut at KLSCM 2024 when the official Pacers were provided with the hot-out-of-Kastam DiRaja clearance Hyperion Max 2. Goh Jin Jing, one of the prolific runner and pacer has shared this in his Thread account.

The same Hyperion Max2 was also provided to PBIM 2024 pacers like my friend Sheryl here, and they received theirs ahead of the race.

Some of the Sports Paragon ambassadors received their pair as well, and me, unfortunately has to wait due to the sizing. But there is no FOMO there, as this allows me to observe, listen and learn what this new iteration has in store for me.

So, when Sports Paragon messaged me and said that they have one in US12... I was of course, excited and went to get them before it goes out of stock again.

And it has been a while since I update my blog with a shoe review, so here we go!

The Brooks Hyperion Max 2 is a lightweight (260grams for US9), highly rockered (RapidRoll for quick toe off), nylon plated (PEBAX) performance trainer and can be used for both racing and training. It comes with Brooks full-length DNA FLASH V2 (nitrogen-infused EVA Version 2) cushioning that is both pillow-y and provide energy return, the ride is snappy, rolling, and quick.

With increased stack height of 36-30 versus 34-26 on original HM, which was also notably lighter at 220grams, the increase of weight is understandable which include the full length PEBAX plate in the Hyperion Max 2. The 40grams differences is negligible in my opinion.

Bonus is the drop on HM2 is now 6mm compared to the older model of 8mm. What this really meant is it can be considered as a near-minimalist trainer, providing a very neutral stance when standing stationery.

The top is a comfortable, sock-like fit which is 4-way stretch and fit is highly adaptable. True to size and I do have wide feet that still fit the D-width perfectly well. There wasn't any issue in the toebox as it allowed for my toes to splay out and yet provide a lot of comfort. No hot spot despite running sockless, which I do 95% of the time. Breathability is not an issue as I never felt hot running in them under the noon sun and hot tarmac for the past 10 runs. I've use it for both easy and hard runs.

The tongue is finally gusseted or stitched down on the side. Sock Like feel as I run sockless except during racing (more due to aesthetic and photo ops). This feature allows you to wear the shoe really fast instead of having to hold on the tongue when slipping your feet in - priceless feature for triathletes when they transition from bike to run.

The laces that came with this shoe is flat and not stretchy, which help greatly in securing the shoe and lock it down on your feet. The same lace is seen across the Hyperion Elite 3 and above series and based on experience, no double-bunny loop required because the lace hardly come off once you give it a firm tie down.

The heel lock was solid, no movement that may cause hot spot at the ankle/heel area, and it is also padded for comfort. This is despite the heel tongue that is constructed higher than usual. Those of you that may have less ability to dorsi-flex or plantar-flex your ankle may have to test and try it in store to see if it may give you problem when running.

You may notice in the photo above, there is toe-guard to keep the shape and to protect against minor bumps on the front.

Stick down insole and as thin as Hyperion Elite 4

The outsole is from green rubber aka recycled materials and significantly thicker than Hyperion Max. Sustainability in mind, and it is generously thick at 5mm. Based on experience with past Brooks, this pair will easily surpass 1000km of mileage with no significant impact to the foam integrity.

Not obvious, but the side/lateral did overextend past the outsole - and it actually lend stability overall, much like the Guide To Stability (GTS) that typically runs around the heel portion

The Hyperion Max 2 is an Elite 4 minus Carbon Plate

Do not be fooled by the "narrow" heel

I could not help but feel the similarity between my Hyperion Elite 4 (HE4) and the Hyperion Max 2. Almost everything minus the obvious carbon plate on HE4.

They are similar, but they are different. Same-same, but different vibe. Here are my observations after using both shoes for well over 100km.

Yes

Both shoes felt firm and grounded. You will feel the traditional racer shoes where you can feel the ground. Helpful as it allows you to gauge how much more you need to "push" on contact.
Both shoes are stacked an at race legal. Both are super stable. Stacked shoe and stability usually do not appear in the same sentence

Lets Run There in Hyperion Max 2

Sufficient to provide a first review

I have clocked well over 100km over 18 runs using the Hyperion Max 2. Coming from Hyperion pedigree, I was looking out for if this second iteration felt much different than the OG. All in, the Hyperion Max 2 can be summed up as follow:

Secure feel with lacing to be very spot on
Socks-like inner and zero hotspot
Heel cup perfect and I hardly noticed the thicker than usual padding vs Tempo
Doesn't feel "tall
Stable with minimal lateral (side to side) movement
Cushioned comfort and yet eager to go thanks to RapidRoll

But how does it compare to the Ghost Max that I was using right before this? As data will help me verify better than "feel", this is Hyperion Max 2 showed itself up in numbers. I have also taken the liberty to compare it against another shoe; The Peak UP3.0 Version 2. A full carbon plated, double PEBAX race legal racing shoe. A mouthful and it is as enjoyable running and racing in it.

First off, the comparison between Ghost Max and Hyperion Max 2. The three metric I was looking for to show differences between a fully cushioned daily trainer and a uptempo/speedwork trainer.

If it often easy to tell "by feel". However, feel is subjective and differs between people. It would be easier to substantiate with data; and for that, i am comparing December 2024 where I used the Ghost Max vs January 2024 where the Hyperion Max 2 were in service.

Thanks to my Stryd pod where these numbers could be quantified, my running around the neighborhood which lends consistency with the data, with the only difference to be the shoe used.

Sharing 3 metric which I see useful. I left out CP and cadence as these two doesn't change much unless your running style changes.

The 3-metrics are:

Duty Factor: This refers to the proportion of time the foot is in contact with the ground during a stride, calculated by dividing ground contact time by stride time. An increase in duty factor indicates an increase in the ground time percentage, while a decrease indicates an increase in the airtime percentage.
Leg Spring Stiffness or LSS: Higher LSS meant there is an increase in energy storage and rebound. Think of the legs as a spring, and in this case the shoe as the modifier
Impact Loading Rate or ILR: Higher ILR equals to higher forces is applied rapidly on the foot, which meant your ground contact time will decrease as in this case, the shoe, shows it's responsiveness

As you can see above, between December (left) and January (right), the duty factor on Hyperion Max 2 decreases, which meant i had more "air time". It then corelates with the ILR, where higher ILR in January also meant shorter ground contact time. The Hyperion Max 2 also returned a slightly higher LSS.

I left out Vertical oscillation as there is minimal changes (5mm on average) which isn't as representative on some of the more graphical changes in comparison.

But when I plotted both shoes/months on the Stryd Footpath, the Hyperion Max 2 showed my feet movement to be lifted higher than Ghost Max (about 5mm average on the VO chart). Bear in mind that there is minimal (0.04W/kg) increase in power between both shoes for the period of time (aka I wasn't pushing/running harder/faster to justify the changes).

I rechecked my other metrics and the average pace over both months were similar (5:15) but the overall power has decreased (240W vs 229W) which meant I am using less energy for the runs using Hyperion Max 2.

Next, comparing the Peak UP3.0 Version 2, a double PEBAX full carbon plated race shoe with the Hyperion Max 2. I had a similar run which involved 7x1min repeats at CP and looked for a segment that is similar in terms of elevation and path on the same route. It seems that for less effort (17W down), I completed the distance further with HM2. While this is not conclusive but it is interesting to see how HM2 "saves" me a bit more effort over the same intervals

Bear in mind as well the Peak UP3.0 is a 18-month-old shoes with about 200km in them (which meant it did lose some of the responsiveness already at the time of testing). But does it also mean that I need to out in an all-out effort for another test/experiment?

Conclusion

The Hyperion Max 2 is indeed a different shoe than its predecessor. Plated and higher stacked, lower drop with newer (Flash V2) foam technology, though heavier and taller due to the nylon plate, it indeed performs well as a daily trainer for both easy and uptempo run.

With no breaking in required for me, sufficient cushioned foam, this model will allow for longer runs and racing as well - if you have choice of only one shoe and no rotation.

Pros

Relatively light and responsive fast trainer, even for long runs or races
You feel grounded at 6mm, yet you know the shoe will provide very good cushioning with the DNA Flash V2.
RapidRoll aka rocker moves you forward fast
Stable with upper that help reduce lateral movements, thanks to the nylon PEBAX plate as well.
Great fit and lockdown, secure heel. super secure laces.
No noticeable hot spot.
Very secure road-grip feel. No indication of slippage under faster pace.
Same price as OG Hyperion Max at RM799

Cons

higher and stiffer heel tongue may bite into some feet if you run sockless like me
Relatively light also meant it could be relatively heavy
Firmer than expected, likely due to the plate neutralizing the plushier Flash V2

Kuala Lumpur, 25 November 2024 – ASICS Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing young athletes and fostering a thriving badminton culture by sponsoring two prestigious tournaments: the ASICS Badminton University Cup 2024 and the ASICS MASISWA Badminton Tournament 2024, both held at IOI Sports Centre, Putrajaya

The ASICS MASISWA Badminton Tournament, held from 19–21 November, brought together 145 players from 21 private universities, showcasing their skills across singles and doubles categories. This was followed by the ASICS Badminton University Cup, held from 22–24 November, featuring 20 teams representing 15 universities in a high-energy team event format.

Both tournaments provided a platform for emerging talents, many of whom are former state and national players, to compete at a high level while promoting ASICS’s core values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and mental and physical well-being. Winners across the categories were awarded cash prizes from a combined pool of RM10,900 and ASICS products, including premium footwear, symbolising ASICS’s support for their continued athletic journeys.

The MASISWA Badminton Tournament made a vibrant showcase of talent. In the mixed doubles Ryan Chang Zi Xuan/Sik Xiao Hui defeated Eskil Khaw Yong Siang/Elaine Ng Yee Mun in a nail-biting 21-14, 19-21, 22-20 finish. For the men’s singles, Sean Ngu Ze Xi claimed the title with a commanding 21-12, 21-7 win over Eng Ler Xian. Kasturi Radhakrishnan triumphed 21-19, 21-10 against Selina Loh Hor Yan, securing her win in the women’s singles. In the men’s doubles, Dylan Ooi Ding Sheng/Eskil Khaw Yong Xiang emerged victorious after a hard-fought match 20-22, 21-10, 21-16 against Leong Yik Hung/Tan Kai Shiuan, while Elaine Ng Yee Mun/Lim Qi Ling won a straight set 21-11, 21-18 against Sik Xiao Hui/Wong Kha Moon in the women’s doubles.

Whereas the ASICS Badminton University Cup concluded with a stellar performance by UCSI University, led by Ng Tze Chian, the younger brother of Malaysia’s men’s singles star Ng Tze Yong. Tze Chian teamed up with Sik Xiao Hui in the mixed doubles to secure the first point for UCSI with a decisive win over Tan Ming Yue and Lim Xin Yi, 21-16, 21-10. The victory was sealed in the men’s doubles, where Lim Yik Fong and Ryan Chang Zi Xuan overpowered Khoo Yong Jian and Teo Hong Kai, 21-17, 21-11, earning UCSI a 2-0 win against UTAR in the final.

Garmin Varia Radar RTL515 - Unboxing & Review

Christmas came early for me this year as I cash into my entitlement from AECO Technologies as the Everymove Sports Club which I am very much part of the past 2-years is being KIV due to changes in direction from AECO itself. It is a sad moment for me, more so after a whole 13 or 14 years of collboration with AECO representing the Garmin brand and myself has been on the forefront of all devices that was launched, learning about them and sharing it here in my blog. As a friend said, cherish the good memories and move on.

And this is indeed a move on post, and I write them with mixed feeling.

The journey so far with AECO Technologies

I've only been reviewing wrist devices mostly over the years; from the first unit of FR910XT and the first ever Fenix, to everything cart GPS and iteration of all the Forerunner (FR) series to all the Fenix series, Cycling power meters such as Vector 2s and Vector 3s, All permutation of HRM OG to HRM Pro Plus, cycling computer such as Edge 1000 and Edge 1040. I even have the Vista handheld series such as the HCx which accompanied me in my early days pre-wrist watch Garmin, and a Vista10, which was replaced as HCx was beyond repair.

The Edge 1000 (thank you AECO) now belong to my son as he starts his triathlon journey. In fact, he inherited the Fenix7X that was given as an entitlement in 2022 and my daughter took over the Fenix6 (2020). Some older devices were given away to friends that wanted to start the sports, while some ended up as electronic waste as they can't be fixed anymore as they are effectively extinct even in Garmin directory.

I have always been curious of the Radar or Varia - and it was indeed a missing link to the Garmin ecosystem that I never had. So with the Entitlement that was due to me for 6-months (and a lot of bargaining), I managed to exchange it for 2-units of Varia RTL515, and you guessed it right - one for me to pair on Edge 1040 and one for my son for his Edge 1000.

(now before you think i left my Wife out, I bought a FR965 for me using my entitlement in 2023)

Thank you AECO Technologies, for this and the good memories with Garmin as a brand. And yes, this also meant I am no longer representing or able to represent Garmin (via AECO) anymore from July 1, 2024 onwards.

Garmin Radar Varia RTL515 - A very quick Review

Garmin has a few variant of cycling radar. And by radar we really meant something that can detect vehicles (and motorbikes) behind us and gives you the heads up warning on your cycling computer or compatible wrist devices. It is safety at it's best.

Couple that with super bright LED lights that can be seen hundreds of meter away, and flashes in such a way it should really alert any road users that you are there. Radar is indeed an underrated companion for many cyclist. First debuted in 2015 as Garmin acquired a South African company that does this technology (Thank you iKubu) with the release of RTL500 and RTL501. Little changed over the years until 2018 where the new shaped RTL510 and RTL511 came out. The 1 at the back actually denote the European requirement that the LED lights must stay ON all time without flashing. So anyone outside of EU can use those fancier flashing and strobe functions.

A mix feeling, really

The RTL515 is to date, 4 years old. It is no changes to the design vs the 2018 RTL510. So it does not surprise me when the two units of Radar I receieved carries both AECO sticker (aka been in the retail shop for at least the past 2 years) and Garmin Malaysia (the new mothership) sticker. Essentially nothing change in terms of packaging.

As how a father should operate, I kept the newer unit for my son, and I took the AECO unit for myself - also for sentimental value being associated with AECO. The unboxing is pretty straight forward with the unit well packed with all things you required to attach to your seatpost.

Here is the step by step unboxing, since I did not take any video to show. You can see that the Radar unit is in plastic bag, so is the attachments for it, the Micro-USB charging cable, the user manual and two sets of stickers. We all love stickers.

Paring it with my Edge 1040 is straight forward.

The pairing of the RTL515 to the Edge 1000 and Edge 1040 were straight forward. it will link as a Radar first, and then you will need to search and link it as LIGHT. This way, the setting can be optimised as you can control the LED behaviour from your headunit very easily. I do not or did not take any video of the unit pairing up, but once done correctly, it will prompt you to update the RTL515 firmware and just follow the intructions on your headunit or wrist devices (I have no issues linking it to the Fenix 7X and my FR965).

And if you are curious on how the unit behave, this is a short video showing how it detects vehicles coming at speed, and the approximate "distance" based on visual on the Edge 1040. The accuracy is good and the past few bike ride was with a lot of confidence that I do not need to constantly look behind even when on straight road to check over my shoulder - and of course using this to supplement the usual looking over the shoulder as I change lane or when I saw obstacle on the front that I would like to avoid.

The beep was loud enough to be heard going at 35km/h and it was fun watching some of these dots turning RED as they approach nearer to you (at approximately 140m). The RTL515 is capable to detect traffics from a 3-lane road as it has a wide "field of vision".

It picks up motorbike very accurately as well but not bicycles. I believe part of the reason is that the radar detects significant speed differences between you and the objects coming from behind - and alert you on the actual threats rather than giving a false positive.

Hope this very short write up provide some insight to the Radar units. Of course, if you have more questions, please do ask away. As the functionality of this Radar i pretty straight forward, there is really nothing more I can write about unless you experience it yourself.

This Unit retail for RM1050 at all Garmin Malaysia retail and online store. This could be one of the best money you may spend on for safety if your riding is constantly outdoor in trafficked area. The LED brightness alone is already a first line of sight for vehicles - the only way they will miss you is because they are driving distracted or under the influence, or in some cases, they just hate anything on two wheels and look at you as a target to bully. For these reasons above, no amount of radar or careful riding will save you.

Fernando Toldi and Regan Hollioake clinch professional titles in epic showdowns
1,800 athletes from 51 nations battle in ‘Jewel of Kedah’ spectacle

LANGKAWI, OCTOBER 12: Fernando Toldi and Regan Hollioake triumphed today in the gruelling IRONMAN Malaysia 2024, conquering the challenging course on the picturesque island of Langkawi, the 'Jewel of Kedah'.

Toldi, 37, delivered an extraordinary performance in the professional men’s race, dominating the 3.8km swim, 180km bike, and 42.2km run in an impressive 8:10:23. Despite being his first visit to Malaysia, the Brazilian athlete demonstrated remarkable endurance in the island's demanding tropical conditions.

This marked the second consecutive year professional athletes have returned to Malaysian shores, following last year's edition that ended a four-year hiatus.

The race commenced with a two-loop swim off the white sandy beach of Pantai Kok, followed by a gruelling 180km bike leg. The multi-loop cycling course led competitors from Pantai Kok towards Jalan Teluk Yu, around Datai's rolling hills, and through colourful kampungs, showcasing Langkawi's diverse landscapes and vibrant culture.

Toldi skilfully navigated the winding terrain past Langkawi Falls and along Pantai Kok's coastline before tackling the marathon-length run. The final leg brought athletes past Langkawi International Airport and along Cenang Beach's scenic oceanfront.

After over eight hours of intense competition, Toldi crossed the finish line at Pelangi Beach Resort and Spa, epitomising the IRONMAN spirit with his victory.

Tim Van Berkel of Australia secured second place with a time of 8:12:38, followed by Germany’s Andreas Dreitz in third at 8:18:07.

Today's victory came just three months after Toldi secured his breakthrough win at IRONMAN 70.3 Ecuador in July. This success, however, is likely to be one he'll savour more given the intense level of competition. Toldi faced not only sweltering heat but also a highly competitive field.

Toldi reflected on his achievement: "I earned my first win in IRONMAN 70.3 (Ecuador in July) and now I've done it in IRONMAN. I'm so stoked and I'm really happy. I trained so hard for this race, and I put all my energy for this day. I dreamt so much for this day."

He continued, emphasizing the mental and physical challenges:

"This was a tough day. It was very mental. I had to push myself like I never did before and I'm so happy. This win is so important for me and for everybody. It was amazing race, one of the toughest I ever raced in my life."

Highlighting the significance of this particular victory, Toldi added: "This is such a big race with tough contenders and a very big field. It was the most important race of my life and my biggest result, for sure."

In the professional women’s race, Australia’s Hollioake proved equally impressive, finishing with a time of 9:13:07, a remarkable 17 minutes ahead of her closest competitor and compatriot Katie Remond (9:30:00). The third place went to Italy’s Federica De Nicola, who clocked 9:42:05.

Like Toldi, Malaysia proved to be a fruitful hunting ground for rookie professional Hollioake, who clinched victory in her debut appearance here. This latest triumph further enhances the 35-year-old's already impressive season, following her win at IRONMAN Australia in May.

Hollioake described the IRONMAN Malaysia as the "toughest race" she has ever competed in.

Reflecting on her experience, she said: "It's my first time here. I wasn't quite sure how I would do with the heat, but it was as brutal as I expected."

“I've never been to Malaysia and it looked like such a beautiful place to come and visit, which it is. It was combining a bit of a holiday and a race as well. That was probably the toughest race I've ever done. I'm relieved for it to be over, but I'm absolutely thrilled to take the victory. This is my first year as a professional, it's been a really, really big surprise to do so well in my first year, but I'm thrilled to have another win."

The event's global appeal was evident, with 1,800 athletes from 51 countries participating.

Complementing the IRONMAN event, IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi featured a shorter distance of 1.9km swim, 90km bike, and 21.1km run. Toma Alexandru from Romania emerged victorious in the male's race, while Bianca Marcon claimed the top spot in the female competition, both showcasing exceptional speed and endurance.

The event also served as a qualifier for upcoming major championships. 45 Age-Group qualifying slots were awarded for the 2025 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Marbella, Spain, on November 8 and 9, 2025, with additional 20 slots reserved for women. A total of 105 Age-Group qualifying slots were allocated for the 2025 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship, with women competing in Kona, Hawaii, on October 11, 2025, and men in Nice, France, on September 14, 2025.

The event featured several exciting side competitions, highlighting IRONMAN Malaysia's commitment to community engagement and inclusivity. The IRONKIDS Langkawi, which attracted over 300 participants, provided a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents across various age groups. The Aquathlon, which consisted of the 100m swim and 1.8km run, attracted young competitors age groups of 7-10 years and 11-15 respectively.

The Community Run offered a 1.8km course for all participants, with children aged 0-6 years completing the distance with parents or guardians, while those aged 7-10 years and older children aged 11-17 ran the route independently. This approach highlighted the event's commitment to inclusivity and shared experience.

Langkawi's growing community engagement has been integral to the event's success. This year, over 1,100 volunteers actively participated, demonstrating the strong commitment and enthusiasm of local residents.

The island continues to excel as a premier sports tourism destination, with athletes' families and friends not only supporting participants but also enjoying Langkawi's attractions. Race week has become a special occasion for quality time, significantly boosting local footfall and revenue, benefiting businesses, accommodations, and services.

It's been a year since I was signed up to be a part of Shokz Malaysia's ambassador program and it has been nothing but a great collaboration and sharing. Being able to experience and provide review of the Bone Conduction and Air Conduction headphones gave me the in-depth knowledge and understanding on how each product may and could suit different individual lifestyle.

Shokz OpenSwim Pro is in progress, and I am de-prioritizing it today to bring to you the brand new, just launched, fresh from the oven Shokz OpenRun Pro 2.

Hello OpenRun Pro 2

I received this unit under embargo and only to be posted on September 20th. However, some of you sharp eyed enough would realised I have been wearing it in a few of my IG stories... but if you missed it...

I have a knack for writing long reviews and understand not everyone enjoy reading a rather longish review, so here is the TL:DR version:

Pros:

Less vibration vs OpenRun Pro. Way less ticklish if you are sensitive about it.
Sound quality noticeably better than OpenRun Pro. The DualPitch™ is not a marketing gimmick.
Because of open ear concept, you can hear your surroundings and still able to have a conversation while running or cycling or in the gym. Beyond sports-usage, the ability to hear your water boiling, fire alarm and other surrounding noises.
Less potential for in-ear infection or impacted ear-wax as it does not go into the ear. No sweat or heating/hot issue as the unit doesn't sit in the ear canal or has the earpad covering like the traditional headphones.
Comfortable fit, doesn't fall out. Difficult to lose as it is secured in a band-construction
Suitable for those with medical or auditory condition. Those with ringing ear (tinnitus) condition may be able to enjoy music better as it does not rely on the eardrums to transmit sound vibration. Works well with hearing aid as the vibration helps amplify the sound picked up by the bone conduction.

Cons:

Pricier at RM899 (aligned with their flagship) - but this in my mind is subjective if you were to compare to the higher end earbuds or Bluetooth communicator devices (specific for work)
Sound leakage if you bump the sound too high (above 75%). If you are in a quiet environment or taking a confidential call/privacy matters, it is best to lower the volume or find a more secure place.
Can potentially cause hearing loss much like traditional headphone/earphone due to exposure to loud noises for much longer hours.

The Full Review

If you been using the OpenRun series, you will know about the bone conduction technology and how the open ear design keeps you alert while you are still able to listen to your favourite podcast, music or just using the device to get coaching feedback from your training.

With a lot of competing brands and products, it is often easy to get lost in the choices and prices; needless to say, Shokz is the pioneer in open-ear bone conduction earphones that has existed since 1994.

Shokz as a brand has kept innovating and improving on their range of products that grew from military application to consumer products and (After)Shokz has made them popular.

Thanks to Shokz Malaysia (Nove Marketing), I received the unit ahead of the official launch and has the chance to re-learn and give this new addition a test so I can share my review with you today.

Review

Shokz has been integral in my lifestyle - both at work and play. Having experienced all the models available, I can say that I am very familiar with the functionality.

Eco-friendly packing

The ability to be fully aware of my surrounding is audible even down to my own footstep. As long as it's not cranked up to more than 80% of the max volume, I can hear people talking, traffic rumbling and even dogs barking during my activities. I felt safer and felt way less guilty using headphone for a workout in a trafficked public area. Best of all, at a conversational volume, i can have music playing in the background like white noise while still having a chat while running with friends.

Getting to know the device (parts)

There are minimal changes to the buttons arrangement and how it works on the OpenRun Pro 2 when compared to the Pro. Which is good news as it is zero learning for those familiar or upgrading from OpenMove OpenRun and the OpenRun Pro.

The biggest change is the USB-C charging port versus the proprietary magnetic charging. If you lose the magnetic cable, you will have to buy a new one. With USB-C, which is easily available, you are certain that you can charge the unit without worrying you forgot the cable.

There are a few additional parts that makes this different from the Pro version. The charging port is one, which now comes with a cover and without Moisture Detection function (aka it will blink/'beep if you try to charge it while the magnetic port is damp).

Because of the air-conduction, the vent that points directly to your ears is more pronounced and obvious, also making the contact patch much larger compared to the Pro.

The placement of the dual-microphone has changed with one of the mic being placed on top/higher than the Pro. Shokz claim this new iteration has greatly reduced noises and provide crystal clear vocal from users during calls and conversation.

I have been using this set and tested it by making a call in front of a fan and the counterparty did not hear any wind noises as my voice came through to them clear. I have made calls in noisy environment (indoor swimming pool with splashes and a lot of chatters from the pool side) and the counterparty still hear me clearly. I feel confident to use this as my daily call/conference call headset if I have to travel light to office or out of home.

The next small change is the multifunction button where it was shrinked smaller and moved slightly to the front. My finger automatically moved to the back or closer to the driver initially and quickly learnt to readjust as needed. Two runs and I am all re-learned.

No changes to the volume and on/off rocker. Pairing is same as OpenRun Pro; hold it long enough from OFF position and it will start pairing to new device.

The Bone-conduction unit vibrates as it send them to your cheekbone for the whole music/sound production. The speakers and the air-vents gives the overall surround experience, apart from allowing the driver unit to push air from the vibration (hence the bass enhancement) sound delivery.

Connectivity

Fresh out of the box and once linked to the phone (iPhone) and app, a quick check and updating the firmware as needed.

The Pro comes with Bluetooth V5.3 and allow Multipoint pairing. V5.3 is the latest protocol and it worked as it should. Minimal delay making it suitable for both sports and play.

Straight forward pairing with laptop (Windows 11)

I have the unit paired to my Garmin FR965, iPhone12 and 13, and my work laptop. You can link up to two devices at any one time. It however require activation of Multipoint connection.

On the new devices since OpenFit Air, it is more straight forward on the connection function, and it is all defaulted to just "Headset". Previously on the OpenRun Pro, there were option for Headset and Headphone, which essentially limits how the sound is optimized for music or call. So no more guessing game with the OpenRun Pro 2.

The Multifunction button allow for playing/pausing, switching music, answering and ending calls.

Fitting

The unit hook over your ears, it clasps lightly over the top of your ear with the driver unit sitting on your face, parallel to the ear canal on this area called the Auricle. The Pro 2 claims to have 16% less "clamping" force versus the Pro version. The bigger contact area helps to distribute pressure better ensure a daylong comfort.

Personally I felt no differences in how it sits on my head and side of my face. It remain as comfy with no pressure points around my ears. It doesn't interfere with sunglasses or my reading glasses as well.

Once placed in position, you hardly will notice it weigh wise, but you know it's there due to the light pressure the titanium band holds it against your face. There is a "mini" version where the band is shorter.

If you have a small (circumference) head, you may want to consider going the "mini" version with 1.5inches shorter band. Having said this, if you are planning to use the normal sized band over a hoodie, it will interfere with the clothing. Some adjustment to the unit to move the rear side downwards/towards the neck may be needed at the expense of the bone-conduction driver sitting slightly higher on the cheekbone.

Using it while cycling, the OpenRun Pro 2 won't interfere with the positioning as long as it's not an aero-helmet.

Sound - Now with 4+2 Customizable EQ and DualPitch™

This is a flagship model - and rightly so with dual-driver known as DualPitch™ technology that changed how the OpenRun pro delivers the sound. DualPitch™ brings in both bone conduction and air conduction into one unit. Resulting in precise high and mids using the bone conduction and subterrean bass delivered from the air conduction.

The introduction of DualPitch™ also reduced the vibration effect of the OpenRun series that uses TurboPitch™. Those of you that felt a bit uncomfortable on the strong vibration may want to test and try if the sensation has been reduced. Personally, I actually like the vibration. It reminds me of the days when i had 2 units of 12 inches subwoofers installed in my car.

Having experienced and tested all the Shokz product, I can say that the Pro 2 is definitely a different listening experience. You have to hear it to believe it. Also, as mentioned above, it has way less ticklish sensation or vibration or I would say there was none in my week of testing this product pre-launch.

Customised EQ

4 preset EQ which is Standard, Vocal, Bass Boost, Treble Boost is same as the OpenFit series. And as they are the same, you have the ability of creating and saving two other EQ that suits your listening style. It is important to note that the EQ only works when you stream using your phone (where the app resides) and not when it is streamed from your devices (laptop or watches).

More than sufficient for all your intent and purpose

This is because the quality is significantly impacted by the sound codec of your device and limited by what Shokz can process. In this case, OpenRun Pro uses sub-band codec or SBC which allow up to 300kbps transfer rate. This is also the most general codec compatible with all Bluetooth transmission, at the expense of quality.

The Shokz is compatible with profiles such as A2DP (high quality audio signals profile), AVRCP (remote control profile for sending command such as play, skip, pause etc), HSP (Headset profile aka to be used for communication) and HFP (handsfree profile).

About IP55 Protection

The IP protection of Pro 2 is the same as Pro which is IP55. It is however lesser than the OpenRun with IP67. In my last year of using the devices with IP55, there is absolutely no issue to have the unit drenched in sweat and in rain. No issues to pour water over my head or even taking it to shower. Only do not immerse the unit in water (read: do not wash it in washing machine) or take it for swimming.

IP stands for International Protection (rating). It comes with two numbers and an optional letter. It defines the degree of protection against solid contact and water in electrical enclosures.

The first digit defines the level of protection the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts such as electrical contacts, moving parts, and ingress of solid objects (like dust, sand, finger)

The second digit refers to liquid protection against well, water or liquid, generally.

The bigger the number, the better the protection. Naturally the IP67 would meant better protection versus IP55.

IP67 protection against total dust ingress and immersion up to 1m depth, but not meant for swimming

Looking at it, it is evidence enough that IP55 is sufficient protection taking into account splashes of water from heavy rain or sweat. I would not worry too much as all my unit has been in service for the past 2 years with no issues. The Pro 2 will definitely stand to this level of usage if not better as with better materials and technology vs the older models.

TL:DR

Pros:

Less vibration vs OpenRun Pro. Way less ticklish if you are sensitive about it.
Sound quality noticeably better than OpenRun Pro. The DualPitch™ is not a marketing gimmick.
Because of open ear concept, you can hear your surroundings and still able to have a conversation while running or cycling or in the gym. Beyond sports-usage, the ability to hear your water boiling, fire alarm and other surrounding noises.
Less potential for in-ear infection or impacted ear-wax as it does not go into the ear. No sweat or heating/hot issue as the unit doesn't sit in the ear canal or has the earpad covering like the traditional headphones.
Comfortable fit, doesn't fall out. Difficult to lose as it is secured in a band-construction
Suitable for those with medical or auditory condition. Those with ringing ear (tinnitus) condition may be able to enjoy music better as it does not rely on the eardrums to transmit sound vibration. Works well with hearing aid as the vibration helps amplify the sound picked up by the bone conduction.

Cons:

Pricier at RM899 (aligned with their flagship) - but this in my mind is subjective if you were to compare to the higher end earbuds or Bluetooth communicator devices (specific for work)
Sound leakage if you bump the sound too high (above 75%). If you are in a quiet environment or taking a confidential call/privacy matters, it is best to lower the volume or find a more secure place.
Can potentially cause hearing loss much like traditional headphone/earphone due to exposure to loud noises for much longer hours.

New Wheels and Rubber for the decade old ICE

First launched in March 2022 globally, the Michelin Pilot Sports 5 or PS5 has won over raves and review of many that wanted a performance tire that performs. Understandably as the legacy of the previous PS3 and 4 sharp handling and responsiveness has many staying loyal to the PS iteration.

Falling in love again with my car

About 6 years ago, when PS4 was first launched, I could not even get one set that suits my Forester XT due to the size (225/55/R18) and the SUV version was supposed to be launched. I wrote to Michelin Malaysia and was silly to think they will entertain my questions/queries on the availability. I in return went for the next best option which was the Continental UC6 SUV, which has served me over the past 6 years. Here was my initial review and the Year 2 review.

Thank you for keeping me and the family safe

With the UC6 SUV worn down to minimum on the sidewall, and the procurement of a very nice STI Enkei rim, the time was ripe to change it out.

Reason why i work hard

My choices of replacement after consulting my friend, which is a subject matter expert and runs a business that specialises with tires and alignment boils down to these few choices. Note: the STI Enkei rim is 18x7.5.

The original 225/55/R18 when converted to 245/50/R18 resulted in marginally differences when it comes to speedometer reading, which was ideally what I was aiming for.

So I committed to likely one of the most expensive upgrades I did on the car this year.

05/24. Acceptable storage time

Michelin Pilot Sports 5 (PS5)

Summary: This tire reputation precedes it's name and legacy. It makes me feel FOMO for the past 7 years wondering if I had actually waited a bit longer I could had gotten the PS4 SUV. 2 years after the PS5 launch, here I am, looking at the tire fitted on the spanking newly refurbished/painted STI Enkei rims that completely changed the look of my 10 years old car.

Fresh out of fitment, balancing and alignment by expert hands, I took the first drive to get home - a 20km journey over highways and residential roads, with the road wet in afternoon rain and bumps and potholes that make Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur.

As expected from a new tire, the ride was plush and comfortable. It soaks up the usual bumps and uneven road well. Trickles of gravels and loose sand and small stones were kicked up and rattled against the tirewalls - a sign that the tire is gripping and picking up debris with the new soft compound.

Lets Go!

Then I hit the main road. The launch and pick up from the turbocharged Subaru boxer engine was directly transmitted to the tire and I felt immediate response. There were almost no delay or hesitation. Perhaps it's the lighter unsprung weight of the new rim (it was almost 40% lighter) or maybe it is really the PS5 lending to these butt-dyno feel of performance.

I then hit the legal speed on the highway and immediately was dissapointed as I could hear the tire noise to be louder than my 6 years old tire. It's louder than usual but the PS5 remained to be sticking to the group with great responsiveness as I change lane and opened up the throttle slightly more.

Braking from 110 to 40 was commendable. It felt as good as the previous tire (which was really good vs the Bridgestone that came with it as stock tire) and gave me a lot of confidence to modulate the brakes as usual without having to unlearn and relearn how the tire respond to sudden change in speed.

Bearing in mind this is post afternoon rain, so the performance on dry road will definitely be better.

Overall, apart from the noise, PS5 indeed lives up to the performance reputation.

Pros:

Grippy. No doubt.
Responsive. The car goes where my steering points to, no delay.
Good braking confidence. Able to modulate the brakes as normal.
Very good (not exceptional) wet handling feel - maybe will be better after KM100/worn in.

Cons:

Noise. I need to crank up the radio if cruising on highway.
Expensive. As the chinese say, good thing not cheap, cheap thing not good.
Mid-wear likely. Treadwear of 340 index indicate softer compound for grip vs longevity

I guess they know the tire is "self-selling" as certain sizes and stocks is hard to get. I had to get mine directly from Michelin and not from the tire shops as no one want to stock up these expensive rubbers in unpopular sizing.

Unlikely to drive to the max speed allowed for this tire even when I can

There are some of the photos taken as the fitting was done. Very subtle features that Michelin did not really tell, nor any auto-writer (paid or unpaid) ever mentioned. Most review I saw online only speaks of the good stuff.

Tiebao Triathlon Cleat Shoes : Review

A quick review of the Tiebao triathlon cleat shoe.

Surprise is good

Finding a triathlon specific shoe is hard, it’s even harder if you are bargain hunting. My last triathlon specific shoe was the first generation of Shimano TR9 in silver. It has seen a few iterations with the entry level (carbon composite) going for RM700. A steep price considering I got mine for less than RM200 about 18 years ago - inflations.

The market is not short of choices and finding one at the right budget for training, particularly for a beginner can be daunting. Thanks to my #triathleteonbudget believes, I found one that fits both budget and function.

And it’s not from Van Rysel from Decathlon or Muddy Fox from Sports Direct.

The design of the Tiebao is both functional and simple. One strap for quick transition, with the strap secured outwards, a ankle loop to place rubber band to position the shoe, super ventilation on the top and bottom and it has a (what I call) magic Velcro that I have not seen in any other triathlon specific shoes.

The insole is thin but sufficient. Highly breathable and I like the contrasting yellow on black.

Shokz OpenFit Air : Unboxing and Review

When I last reviewed the Shokz OpenFit in October 2023, I was bowled over by how much better the sound was when compared to the traditional bone conduction headset. Bearing in mind that the OpenFit was a TWS or True Wireless Sound headset that is made into an Open-Ear concept. If you haven't read about the OpenFit, you can click here

Rewind to about 1 month ago, where Shokz Malaysia had a big launch for the new addition to the TWS series - the OpenFit Air. Having known of this since April/May 2024 via insiders, I was looking forward to seeing it - lighter and cheaper. Two things that matters for a Triathlete on Budget.

The bonus point? I be given an unit for my keeping. I am very grateful for that gesture as I loved the OpenFit sound, and I am sure I will love the OpenFit Air as much as I love the OpenRun Pro I have.

And in Pink, please.

A Quick Rewind of What is OpenFit?

Let's start with the most basic... Shokz OpenFit Air is not the usual Shokz Bone Conduction earphone. It is an air-conduction and what Shokz call as DirectPitch™ technology. The technology optimize the distance and angle between the sound source to the ear in such way that it minimize sound loses to your surrounding while maximizing your listening.

Now, to call it air-conduction is not exactly mind-blowing as all speakers works on displacing air through the drive unit. The displaced wave is what gives you sound. You can actually consider the OpenFit Air as a "mini speaker" but that would not do justice.

Like the OpenFit, the OpenFit Air comes with the same 18mmx11mm driver made from composite (read: Carbon fiber) with polymer surround. Both the carbon fiber diaphragm and polymer surround creates the clear, crisp, strong sound with deep bass notes.

But unlike the OpenFit, the OpenFit Air has a renewed fit that is ergonomically enhanced.

Couple that with the Nickel-Titanium memory alloy ear hook, a teardrop shaped cross section design that is thinner on the top, and a pliable ear hook, you will have an earbud that lets you listen for a long period of time in a secure stable fit.

Fitting

The unit hook over your ears exactly like the OpenFit, it clasps lightly over the top of your ear with the driver unit sitting somewhere on your upper part of the ear where it is near the Tragus, which shield your ear canal - it's also the place where some of you pierce your ears.

Here is how it look like with the OpenFit Air, Take note how it "wrap around" my ear and it sort of fits pretty well.

And here it is with the OpenFit. Very subtle differences but the angle of fit is pretty obvious better in the OpenFit Air.

Now for the review

Having spoilt with the OpenRun Pro for my daily run and conference calls on both phone and laptop, enjoying the freedom of not having the ear canal stuffed or the ear covered for my training; or even having the head constantly being clamped on headset for work - the OpenFit brought new freedom similar to OpenRun Pro.

All these with a total pass-through of surrounding sound even at volume as the ear canal is not blocked.

As this unit is a loaner, i been maximing the use for all my activities. I hear my footsteps, and continue to not feel guilty of using headphone for a workout in a trafficked public area. Similarly, I can have a conversation with music playing in the background like white noise while running or talking with friends.

And may i add again - the music streamed is like having an in-ear monitor or a proper headphone over your ears. Even as I am typing this, I have Eric Clapton Tears' In Heaven playing in the background, with each strum of the strings and the bass kicking in to be reminding me of my regret number 2.

Getting to know the device (parts)

Like the OpenFit, if you close off these vents or some water covers them, the Bass is cut off and all i hear is just flat mid-range sound/vocal.

The Charging Case is small and pretty nifty. Very similar to the OpenFit but more rounded edges.

Connectivity

The OpenFit Air comes with Bluetooth V5.2 and allow Multipoint pairing. I have the unit paired to my Garmin FR965, Fenix7ProSolar, iPhone12, iPhone13 Pro and my work laptop. It requires activation of Multipoint connection on the App.

All I need daily

I personally prefer it to be done on the Shokz App for the OpenFit Air as the touch-button doesn't support on device multipairing. Very straight forward with the app.

Take note that OpenFit Air only has 4-preset EQ vs OpenFit with customisable EQ

Using it with Multipoint meant I have the freedom to switch between two devices without needing to disconnect from other devices. At work, I switch between phone (for Spotify) and laptop (for meeting/calls). you are limited by the 7 hours battery life. If you are a heavy user, do keep your device charged in the Charging Case when you are not using. As an example, my 10 hours usage today for run, music, phone calls and standby time has set the Charging Case battery to 50%. Doing a quick maths to see it all add up - both OpenFit Air at 100% (7hours), Charging case at 50% (10.5hours), usage as of today 8 hours = 7+10.5+10 = 27.5 Hours. The unit is rated at 28hours which meant it is pretty accurate.

Perfect color

As usual, on the laptop, the connection requires some understanding of the limitation of each function between using it as a headset and headphone.

Headset - allow full usage for both voice (usage of the mic on Shokz) and music/playback (anything streamed from the laptop)
Headphone - only music/playback

The separation meant the playback as headset is biased to vocal. This meant the music streaming will be subpar and sound really bad. However on Headphone, the quality is as good as streaming from the phone.

The Bluetooth 5.2 has a faster switching between devices between multipoint pairing.

The OpenFit Air EQ is limited to only 4-preset. Unlike the OpenFit where you can create your own

Bear in mind that this mode of EQ is only available through phone source streaming and not on any other devices as they are controlled solely from the Shokz App. So it makes no differences to the sound quality aka default to "standard" when you playback outside of your phone app.

Touch Disable- able

If there is one experience using the OpenFit is the sensitivity of the touch sensor. Very similar exoerience using the OpenFit Air as it is a hit and miss when using it while running or cycling. If the unit/sensor is covered in sweat, it can "activate" automatically - which is irritating. Lucky for the OpenFit Air, Shokz has made the touch sensor being able to be disabled. A gift to humankind using these. I do not change music or adjust volume when I use the earbuds for workout as they are mostly for instruction feddback and voice note/voice over of my pace/hr/km. So having them switched off is great as it also meant less distraction.

None. None. None. and None.

Enabling it is as simple as tapping it in the app. No issues.

Fitting - using it while cycling and running

A month of usage since recieving the unit and making it my main headset/earbud for workout has affirmed that this unit is as secured as it's older sibling the OpenFit. Short of one occasion where I literally ran into a low hanging (small) branches with leaves, the unit got tangled in the low hanging shrubs and I had to run back to locate it. I was worried that I will lose it after using it just 3 times...

And as I started to use it for more runs and cycling, I need to be aware of any movement that may peel off the unit - such as when i remove my running tops or helmet. There is however a small hole on the end of the earhook - which makes me believe there should be an accessory that may allow it to be secured and hung over the neck... maybe.

Sound - Output and Input

As expected the sound produced from the OpenFit Air sound as good as the OpenFit. As they both share the same DirectPitch technology with the same composite driver and air vents. Only noticable differences is on heavier bass sound where the OpenFit with it's metal casing perform better. Simplay said, OpenFit Air is great for vocals and treble sound, but perform below par on any hip-hop or heavier bass notes. For that, the Direct Bass function (in EQ) will bump it up without muddling it to be overly bassy just for the sake of being bassy.

Still with no ANC as the unit is open-ear concept, so there is no encapsulating or isolation potential for the earbuds to properly drive any ANC. However, the clarity and isolation is sufficient for both indoor and outdoor condition.

Perfect for commuting in open area

One thing though, the sound volume is not sufficient loud enough for commuting in train - as the train screeching and announcement will drown off a level or two of the fidelity.

The dual-microphones is situated at the top and bottom portion of the driver unit. With Noise-Cancelling feature (vs OpenFit AI Noise-cancelling), it works sufficiently well for phone calls and my everyday conference call/meetings. The counterparties I speak to has no issue hearing me clearly except when i stand infront of a fan and talk - but even that, the best noise-cancelling microphone will fail unless you put some buffer between it and the wind noise. Overall, satisfactory and no complains.

The Shokz OpenFit Air is compatible with profiles such as A2DP (high quality audio signals profile), AVRCP (remote control profile for sending command such as play, skip, pause etc), HSP (Headset profile aka to be used for communication) and HFP (handsfree profile).

Being TWS earphone meant that you can have the option to just use ONE side at any time and still carry on your daily work. Not too bad if you are planning to extend the battery life by another 7 hours by using one side at a time.

About IP54 Protection

The IP protection of OpenFit is lesser than the Pro version. The OpenRun Pro is IP55 and the OpenFit Air, very much like the OpenFit is IP54.

IP stands for International Protection (rating). It comes with two numbers and an optional letter. It defines the degree of protection against solid contact and water in electrical enclosures.

Rain is not an issue, whatmore sweat

The first digit defines the level of protection the enclosure provide against access to hazardous parts such as electrical contacts, moving parts, and ingress of solid objects (like dust, sand, finger)

The second digit refers to liquid protection against well, water or liquid, generally.

The bigger the number, the better the protection. Naturally the IP55 would meant better protection versus IP54.

Great companion - works in all weather like me

For the purpose of testing, yes, I have taken the OpenFit Air to shower after my run. Trickling water over the unit causes no significant issue except the touch function goes haywire and the air-vents on the top and bottom gets saturated with water and render the sound to be limited to just vocal/midrange. With the touch control disabled, there is zero issue listening to music in shower if you don't mind the muffled sound due to the vents being blocked by water. However, do not do this on purpose other than to just wash it after exercise (aka rinse) and not immerse in water. You been warned ;-)

Looking at it, IP54 is sufficient protection taking into account splashes of water from heavy rain or sweat on typical exercise. Should not have issue and do not submerge the unit in water and make sure to empty your pocket if you are the type to keep your earphones/wireless buds in your pocket (remember i say above the unit is hard to keep outside the charging case without risk of losing it?)

Long Term Review

I have been using this unit for slightly longer than a month since I received it thanks to Shokz Malaysia (Nove Marketing). I've charged it maybe like 3 times (casing) and it lives up to the 28hours usage which translate to roughly 8 days of mix usage for run/cycle and conference call before the casing battery goes to 20%. A quick charge often gives me enough of juice for another run, and always make sure the connecting Quick Charge is dry before you place it in the unit.

Yes, that is the OpenSwim Pro... Guess which one I review next ;-)

When AECO Technologies told me that they brought in a health tracker, I wasn't impressed as well, Garmin that they have been distributing for years IS a health (and fitness) tracker.

But things took a turn when they told me it is in a form of a ring. I have heard and known of Oura ring, which was something really new for me about 5 years ago and available in US. I knew of it as one of my colleague's son plays Ice Hockey and was sponsored by Oura, so his coach gets insight into his data during every training and games. I thought that was such a cool stuff for a developing athlete.

Fast forward to about 10 weeks ago, I was shown the Ultrahuman Air ring at AECO's office. I was like... wow. Impressed. Naturally, I posted a teaser once AECO gave all clear 2 weeks later...

This will likely be your most detailed Ultrahuman ring review in Malaysia on real user usage experience that span for a month of loan.

I was handed the loan unit of UltraHuman Air Ring, size 9 during the May Everymove Session at Bukit Jalil. I guesstimated the sizing based on my wedding band size+1, as I intend to wear the ring on my index finger, as recommended by Ultrahuman. The sizing came almost perfect for my left index finger, and fits similarly on my right ring finger. You may want to test and try the sizing to ensure you get the right sizing. AECO provides the sizing kit for RM30 which can be purchased and non-refundable.

It is very important to get the right fit as the reading may be affected if the ring is too loose and your comfort compromised if it is too snug. My suggestion is to contact AECO or head over to AECO HQ to experience the sizing if they allow.

As the unit I received was a loan/test unit, I got them without the box. So there is no unboxing experience but rather an unboxed experience. What you get (assumed in the sealed box) are the ring of the size you wanted, the charging cradle and a USB-C to USB-C cable of high quality.

The unit I got was known as Space Silver. Per Ultrahuman description, the ring is made from fighter jet grade Titanium reinforced with Tungsten Carbide Carbon Coating, which promises it to be resistant to everyday wear and tear.

The Inner ring is coated with medical-grade hypoallergenic epoxy resins, promising a comfortable wear all the time.

AECO Technologies only bring in two color - Space Silver and Aster Black. Ultrahuman however, has 5 different selections which include Raw Titanium, Matte Grey and Bionic Gold.

Notice the notch at the bottom where the sensors are located. This part needs to sit at the bottom of your finger for accurate reading. Hence the need for the ring to fit nicely.

The Ultrahuman AIR Ring has these sensors:

Infrared Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor
Non-contact medical grade skin temperature sensor
6-axis motion sensor
Red LED for HR and Oxygen Saturation

Infrared LED for HR monitoring

It can be seen that the focus here is leveraging on HR monitoring which then translate to assortments of data based on their algo settings. As it has motion sensor, it will detect movements and also translate them into steps.

Unlike the traditional wrist-based fitness tracker, the ring is obviously lacking a screen. This meant it rely 100% on the app to project the information required to you. The ring connects to your phone using Bluetooth Low Energy or BLE, and it is at version 5, or the latest version.

The name is however a bit undescriptive as i found myself after a few weeks of using and completely forgot that UH_F is Ultrahuman ring, I was wondering which unknown device has been connecting to me... Renaming it as Ultrahuman AIR like how Garmin does with most of it's products will help greatly.

It's a rabbit hole of information for me. Like I've seen data and I've experienced data, but the amount of data the ring churns out is just unbelievable that it makes the health tracking on my already advanced Garmin FR965 looked basic. This following video is on Day 2 of usage and I was already very invested in purchasing this for myself.

The setting up video, if you are wondering what base data they collect. It also links to your current fitness/sports tracker, and in my case, I gave full access to my Garmin Connect account. This way, my steps and activities are synced.

It took me two times to get it right. So, if you experience some credential issues, it's likely the app trying to link, so kill the app and try again and all will be good.

These are the data it tracks, and i hope this is conclusive based on my usage over the past 8 weeks. The best devices often collects your biomarker in the background, without you doing anything more that to charge and sync the ring.

Based on my years of using fitness and health tracking devices, I can share with you that what is missing in most is telling you how well you are recovering, and that is beyond telling you need to "rest for XX hours" or telling you that you scored 100 points in body battery.

How close the HR reading to a wristHR device, in this case my Garmin FR965? I would say - pretty close!

So this will put aside any concerns or worries that the HR captured is inaccurate and only for you to think that the only accurate way to track HR is via HRM chest strap. Bear in mind that technologies in these sensors are so advanced right now that a Wrist HR, or in this case a Ring HR is as accurate as a HRM strap. I stand by this based on the usage of Garmin Elevate 4 HR modules and experiencing the Ultrahuman Ring AIR data.

Capturing Sleep Data

The Ring Air captures and report these Sleep metrics. More than what the typical fitness device does. I separate the list below with things my FR965 can't do vs what Ultrahuman Ring Air can do, and surprisingly, there are two metrics that Ring Air can't do!

Winner: UltraHuman Ring AIR

The ability to track your skin temperature and HR Drop already makes a big difference in the whole sleep tracking experience. IN the weeks of using it, I learn that minor (read in Fahrenheit, sometimes 0.5F) impact the overall sleep score.

I have learned that Skin Temperature deviation is a sign of lack of rest, illness or inflammation. Also, eating late at night caused temperature fluctuation as the system need to work overtime to digest the food, hence creating a thermogenic impact. Needless to say, late night workout will lead to higher temperature at sleep.

On the HR Drop, it is defined as the time it takes for your HR to drop to the lowest point during sleep. This is a marker for rest and recovery. The faster it drops, the better the body starts to repair and recover. Similarly, food and stimulant like caffeine will impact your HR Drop even if you already "used" to the spike. And of course, late night exercises contribute.

External factor such as your bedroom - cool, dark and quiet, and even avoiding usage of devices or bluelights will contribute to HR Drop.

Knowing these factors made me more aware on how I approach my sleep, and indeed i saw improvement in my habits and started to clean up my sleep!

Tracking your Circadian Rhythm

We all read about how as Human, the circadian rhythm or in layperson speak, is the natural process that moves throughout the day that tells us when to eat, sleep and play. External factors such as sunlight and temperature play an important part, this is why for frequent travelers, once they fly across time zones, they struggle with how the body reacts - and jet lag is just one of the resultants of a whacked circadian rhythm.

When your circadian rhythm is out of synced, you will see impacts such as delay in recovery or delay in wound healing, changes to your hormones, digestion issues, body temperature fluctuations, lack of energy, brain fog and mental disorder.

These will then lead to more major issues such as issues with your cardiovascular system, your metabolism, your GI, your endocrine (hormone) and your nervous system.

So, having Ring AIR takes in all the data of your sleep, rest, stress and all, it will generate a chart called the Phase Response Curve that is yours to monitor. The chart will have a countdown marker on how and what you can maximise your day. Stimulus such as light exposure, food, exercise will help map the response, and then help you to shift your circadian rhythm - priming you to wake up earlier or later, and greatly utilises the body temperature data to determine your temperature minima - aka the lowest temperature your body achieved at complete rest.

It is all science.

Caffiene Intake

This was a tough one for someone that are used to drink coffee anytime of the day. In the name of science, I embarked on the UltraHuman "Stimulant Restriction Window" where it takes into account my Circadian rhythm and how other external factor impact my overall health.

It has a caffeine decay chart, that shows the optimum time to take the stimulant (caffeine) drink, and how much to take. It changes ever so slightly unless your Circadian clock goes out of whack.

How is this for control intake?

In the month that i did this, I have definitely found that and understood my optimum timing for coffee. My window starts from 9.15am onwards and it tapers off to 3.10pm. A month after returning the ring to AECO, I am still adhering to this timing for my caffeine intake and yes, my sleep and rest, and recovery for the next day's training has seen improvement.

The window changes as the ring gets more data from you, moving your Circadian clock and helping you to optimise the stimulants.

Weekly Report

I receive a weekly report from Ultrahuman that benchmark my last 2-weeks data against the last week. It has a 3-weeks trending window. When the first report came in, it is obviously inaccurate as I did not wear it for the first two weeks of the report. So the video above is "all me". Without writing more on what it tracks, which you can see if for yourself, the amount of data sharing is immense and useful. From the basic of your sleep score and recovery score to your movement index, to the very detailed "skin temperature drop" and how well you adhered to your Circadian clock. In short, you can't cheat your own biological clock. This ring will know if you been sleeping late and having bad recovery.

Temperature Deviation

If HR, HRV and SPO2 data isn't enough to tell you what and how your rest and recovery has been, the Ultrahuman can detect your temperature changes down to 1 degree Fahrenheit. This accuracy is essential than using Celsius as a comparison simply because a "0.1C" doesn't look as alarming as "0.18F" though they meant the same thing. While the overall temperature reporting is in Celsius, the deviation or changes is in Fahrenheit.

The smaller unit used gives a better picture of how the body is responding to a few external factor. I realised my body temperature change when sleeping if I:

Exercise after 6pm
Eat or snack after 9pm
Sleep late post the sleep window
have late night work calls

A higher core temperature would then meant my body will recover slower as the other metric comes in; the HR Drop where it triggers the actual recovery while we sleep.

The body starts recovering when the HR drop faster at rest, which meant the HRV starts to be longer, which allow the body to be better at rest. So, any stimulant (caffeine) or external impact (including stress) actually gives you a slower recovery rate, which then impact your overall sleep quality and efficiency.

And it all started to make more sense.

Also, notice the change in temperature between daytime and nighttime? You all will know why the bigger deviance on the temperature in daytime (because I run under the sun). But take note that my body is warmer at night vs daytime!

Breathing Exercises

The developer of Ultrahuman is based in Bangalore. No surprises that a lot of the breathing exercises is based on Yoga principal. The are many choices of them that last from 2 minutes to beyond 10 minutes with various impact and effect, including raising temperature!

My personal favorite is the Box Breathing, which is consistent with what I do everyday when I wake up. I have tried a few more of them, particularly the 4-7-8 which i feel asleep before i ended the exercise! Maybe I was just too tired that day.

How about Workout Tracking?

As the Ultrahuman is more of a health tracker than an activity tracker, the integration of workout is with the device you pair with to obtain the data. While you can do the tracking using the phone app, it is not as accurate due to the GPS dependency on the phone signal and accuracy. This also meant you will have to bring your phone with you. If you default to just pulling data from your devices, you won't get any map or data.

There is also no control on the HR Zoning, which based on the above, I believe could be biased to the 220-age formula. Otherwise, the rest of the data is a direct pull from my Garmin Connect when both devices are synced. My only complain is that the Step counter on this ring is not accurate. I believe because it is worn on the finger, the sensitivity is set to be really low. In my month of wearing them, the ring step counter has never went past 50% of what my Garmin register. As an example, I run 5km and my Garmin registered about 4.6k steps. The ring will only show I moved less than 1500 steps. This big gap also contributed to the "movement index" in the weekly reporting. However, as long as you are using just one device to benchmark your activities, it will not be a big change to the reporting. But if you are looking for a more robust workout and activity tracker, the Ultrahuman is not it.

Summary

The Ultrahuman ring experience showed to me that it is a good alternative to those that do not always wear their devices or watch and would like something more discreet while still have their vitals like HR, SPO2, HRV and movements recorded. It is not intrusive and is comfortable if you sized it correctly. So, the fit is important and essential.

I like it for:

Lightweight and barely there. Just find the most comfortable hand and finger to wear.
No subscription required.
Great GUI and reporting. Makes me want to get the report everyday.
Actionable suggestions. Instead of just dumping data to you, it suggests to you that you can do to close the gap. Breathing exercise as an example or having better sleep hygiene.
Accurate. The vital readings are similar to my Garmin FR965 and Fenix7x Plus.

I can like it better if:

Allow FIT file upload or full integration to popular devices, and how they will change and integrate to the overall data, including aligning the Steps.
Changes to the app to remove the advert for M1 Glucose monitoring - which is not available in Malaysia, or require you to invest in other tools from Ultrahuman
Less thick or at least taper the edged down. The thickness sort of brushes against your face or surface. Sometimes it's painful (lol) and sometimes, i am afraid it may scratch the ring (because it's on loan)
Have a marker on the ring to show where the sensors are, instead of having to consciously adjust. The data is only as accurate as the sensor placement.
And...

If AECO Technologies will have a longer collaboration of this ring with me so I can continue to report and share how these data changes in my daily life.

As a lifestyle triathlete, I rely on my training and my daily routine to maximize my potential so I could continue to train and improve. While fueling during race is important, recovery is as important as it help determine your readiness to train the next day.

How does it mix and taste in water?

Chocolate powder dilute very well and fast in room temperature water. Protein and chocolate crunch stays crunchy after mixing.

No noticeable typical isolated whey protein taste (chalky or bitter). I would not had thought it’s a protein shake if given to me in a blind test. Three hours in and no gastro issues. Seems to agree better than milk powder I take after hard workout.

The competition at the IRONMAN 70.3 Asia TriClub Championship Desaru Coast on Sunday proved to be incredibly engaging, with more than 800 participants toeing the start line at The Westin Desaru Coast Resort beachfront to tackle the first leg with a 1.9km swim.

Athletes then tackled a challenging two-loop, undulating 90km bike course along the scenic coast of Desaru Coast. Transitioning to the run leg, participants completed a flat, three-loop 21.1km course encircling the perimeter of The Els Club Desaru Coast - Ocean Course. The thrilling journey concluded at the finish line located on the beachfront of The Westin Desaru Coast Resort.

It was a day to cherish for Chinese triathlete Cao Junyu who emerged as the IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast overall fastest male finisher, clocking 4:30:31. This marked the first time he achieved this feat. The 37-year-old had previously tasted success in the age-group category, but for him, nothing compares to this victory.

"I'm very happy, it was a dream come true for me to top the overall standings for the first time," said Cao, who hails from Chongqing. "This achievement helped me surpass my previous best, a second overall in the Philippines last November. I've been training very hard ever since, so today's success reflects my perseverance. I fought very hard from behind to take the lead at the 6km mark of the running leg. I then pushed on and increased the pace to seal the win.”

Singapore's Choo Ling Er was again in a class of her own as she claimed an emphatic victory as the IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast overall fastest female finisher, marking the second straight year that she topped the chart. Crossing the finish line at 4:52:13, Choo described today's performance as her best yet, especially after recovering from a road mishap that affected her both physically and mentally.

"I'm very happy to defend the title. I've been struggling with my health for the last six months. I had a cycling accident during Christmas, which took me five months to recover. Coming back was a very slow process. I lost a lot of skin and all that,” said Choo.

"Mentally, cycling on the road is a struggle. You constantly worry that it might happen again, like a car might hit you from behind. I managed to get through it, and I'm happy with my progress. This is the best race I've ever done, feeling healthy, happy, physically, and emotionally. I'm very well, and I managed to execute what I needed to do and have a great day."

IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast’s fastest Malaysian female finisher, Serena Yang could not have asked for a better outcome as she marked a successful comeback after delivering her third child in September last year. Juggling motherhood has become tougher than ever, as she could only afford to train full-time for a month prior to today's race.

"I'm really surprised with my performance today. I thought I would be much slower, but I did quite well. I was targeting 5:40, but I did 5:31. So I'm really pleased with today’s performance. Shahrom Abdullah, who came in as IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast’s fastest Malaysian male, was elated to make a strong return after missing last year’s edition due to illness.

"Last year, I was all set for the race and had even checked in my bike. But just before the race, I started feeling unwell. It definitely feels great to compete after last year's absence, and finishing as the best Malaysian makes it even better," he said.

Participants in fringe events – the Sprint Triathlon and 5150 Triathlon -- gained valuable insights and experiences akin to those of an IRONMAN competition. These events catered to athletes seeking a taste of triathlons for the first time or aiming to enhance their performance before venturing into the longer IRONMAN 70.3 event.

The Sprint Triathlon featured a 750m swim, 20km bike ride, and 5km run, while the 5150 Triathlon series presented a more challenging course of 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride, and 10km run.

In the 5150 races, also known as the Olympic Distance, Chris Wheeler of Great Britain stamped his class by finishing first in the men's overall standings with a time of 2:32:43, while Portugal's Joana Moreira clinched the fastest female honour with a time of 2:44:26.

In the men's Sprint Triathlon contest, Malaysia’s Yap Qi Yi's hopes of securing a second consecutive victory were dashed as he settled for second place behind Singapore's Cedric Chua Jian Hong.

The 18-year-old Yap initially took the lead after the swim but was penalized for drafting too closely behind Chua during the bike leg, costing him a crucial minute. He finished with a time of 1:08:20, more than two minutes behind Chua's 1:06:02.

Michaella Concetta Alexandra Widjaya of Australia emerged victorious in the female category with an impressive time of 1:21:56.

With more than 100 participants, IRONKIDS proved to be a vibrant showcase of emerging talent. Under the vigilant supervision of marshals and security personnel, children displayed remarkable skill and enthusiasm as they swam, biked, and ran through the course. Their determination and athleticism were evident, reflecting a promising future generation of triathletes.

Melaka, Malaysia - May 5, 2024 - Cycling enthusiasts from across the region converged in the historic city of Melaka today for the debut of L'Étape Melaka by Tour de France, marking the third consecutive year of the event's presence in Malaysia, as well as the newest location to host the prestigious event.

Dubbed as "the World's Greatest Amateur Cycling Event,", L'Étape by Tour de France offers cyclists the opportunity to push their limits and motivate one another in a spirit reminiscent of the renowned Tour de France.

Flagging off from The Sail Melaka, riders embarked on a picturesque journey that combines cycling with historical exploration. The 2024 L'Étape Melaka is more than just a cycling event; it's a cultural journey set against the vibrant heritage of Melaka. Presented as a sports tourism experience, it has consistently drawn many participants each year.

The inaugural L'Étape Melaka by Tour de France saw a significant turnout, drawing more than 3,350 participants including 90% from international and domestic riders from over 47 countries. This turnout not only reflects the rising popularity of cycling in Asia but also fosters camaraderie among cyclists from a variety of backgrounds.

Cycling enthusiasts had the opportunity to experience the adrenaline rush of the Tour de France with 140km and 70km route options. These courses were approved by Tour de France experts to provide a challenge that appealed to both new and seasoned cyclists while traversing the landscapes of Melaka.

Safety remained a top priority, with fully-closed roads, well-placed food and water stations, mechanical support, and fast-response medical aid ensuring a secure environment for all participants. The event's sanctioning by the Malaysia National Cycling Federation further underscored its commitment to safety and excellence.

Nestled in the heart of Malaysia, Melaka provided the perfect backdrop for this immersive cultural experience. As cyclists crossed the finish line, they not only celebrated their physical achievements but also embraced the rich heritage of Melaka, making memories that will last a lifetime.

Amongst the main highlights of L’Étape Melaka included the plethora of festival activities that enriched participants' interactions beyond the racecourse., including a lucky draw with over RM100,000 worth of prizes to be given away, including a Specialized Roubaix SL8 valued at RM27,000. Every race, you start from zero and you don’t have any expectations. I’m just very happy that everything went to plan. It was a safe race, and I was able to keep up and win the game. We had really good weather today. The rain cleared yesterday, so we had some nice temperature. The course was really flowy and fun; we had fast downhills, and the road quality was great. The closures really help, and we had enough marshals showing us where to go so, all in all, you can’t really go wrong. It was just so easy to navigate, as long as you move fast enough,” Alicia Brittain said with a grin, emphasizing the camaraderie among competitors.

In addition to the exhilarating race experience, participants had the chance to win exclusive prizes, including a Roubaix SL8 valued at RM 27,000 in a lucky draw.

Anker Soundcore Space Q45: Unboxing and Review

Being part of the AECO Technologies Garmin ambassador also allows me access to some of their other products. AECO Technologies has an Audio Visual business known as Stereotype which carries brands such as Bang & Olufsen, Shokz, Anker, JBL, AudioTechnica, Jabra and Audio Pro. As part of my 2023 entitlement as one of the Pacer for Everymove Sports Club, I am able to get any items other than Garmin devices - and this time, i decided to go for the Anker Soundcore Space Q45.

Active Noise Cancelling Headset

The Anker Soundcore Space Q45 are wireless, over-ear headphones with active noise canceling (ANC). They have up to 50 hours of playtime in ANC mode and up to 65 hours in standard mode. My Bose QC35 is aging and it is time to have a standby headset in case I need one for travel soon. Those that has ANC headset will know how important it is for long haul travelling.

The Anker Soundcore Space Q45 is made out of plastic, featuring pleather or plastic leather made to look like leather ear cups. They are comfortable but they are not as breathable as my Bose QC35. However if you were to use this in mainly airconditioned space (travel, plane, office), they are alright. The headset is very adjustable just like my Bose QC35 and the cup can lay flat similarly and fold for storage into the semi-hard case provided.

Premium Feel

Despite the plastic construction, the headset lend a very premium feel. The surface may likely be scratched easily but having used this for almost 2 months seems to tell me it will hold up pretty well on normal usage. By normal usage I would meant not baby-ing it but use it as it is intended to, and not abused.

The headband is metal-reinforced and could easily be adjusted to fit my big head. The cushioning on the band is soft but I doubt if it will last long with my short/spiky hair giving a lot of friction on it in the long run. My Bose QC35 headband has been replaced with paracord which i used to wrap it up after attempt to change it did not materialised as it involve desoldering the electronics and cutting the pleather band on the QC35.

Control Buttons

The Soundcore Space Q45 has control buttons on both left and right ear cups. They are neatly divided and feature easy to locate and touch buttons. Tactile so you can feel the press/feedback. On the right ear cup is the media and volume control button. Play, pause and volume up and down is situated on the right side. You can skip or return to previous songs by pressing and holding the volume button up or down for 2-seconds.

Also on the right side is the cable jack and the unit comes with the cable for you to link to the 3.5mm output. However, it lacks the plane jack, which is a shame. I may have to repurpose my Bose QC35 jack or get a new one.

And with USB-A to USB-C charging cable

The left side holds the Power button, which also pair your unit via Bluetooth. There is the ANC button that toggles the ANC (On/Off/Passthrough). The charging (USB-C) port is on the left side.

First time Listening

Without tinkering with the sound and using it fresh out connected via Bluetooth to my iPhone 12, over Spotify, the sound is acceptable. It perform as it should if you, like me is not able to discern or has a reference audio/songs to constantly test/compare it with. I personally find the quality highly acceptable even at zero-boost with ANC being my main price point consideration.

The Adaptive Noise Cancelling

This is the reason I got this headset. The ANC is good. With 3-different modes it allows for good customization depending where you are at so you still have situational awareness.

Convincing

Based on the usage, I would rate the Space Q45 ANC to be on par or likely better than the Bose QC35. Bearing in mind the Bose unit has been serving me for more than 6 years. I may not be comparing apple to apple when it comes to "age" of the Noise Cancellation capability but it is nice to know these feature are available at lesser cost than before. The Bose QC35 was RM1.5K when I bought it and the Anker Space Q45 is less than half the price (RM699).

Toggling between the ANC is also easy with 2 taps and I am in transparency mode. No complains here.

The Soundcore App

The App is easy to use and it was the first thing I downloaded after the unboxing video to link it up and also to check for firmware update. There is a firmware update and after listening to it for a while I use the Equaliser and set the HearID which is a personalised EQ based on your hearing sensitivity and how you like your music.

In the app you are able to do more stuff like setting the level of transparency mode you want and also programing how the ANC button behave to your preference. Unfortunately unlike the higher end Sony XM5, you can't put a hand over the headset to activate transparency. However, compared to my Bose QC35, this is a step change vs having to remove the headset from my ears to listen to someone talking to me.

The Q45 comes with two microphone arrays, which works great for phone calls and also telecon as it was good enough to cancel any background noise and focuses on your spoken voice.

Bluetooth and supported codec

Apart from the 3.5mm wired connection, the Q45 is designed mostly to work via Bluetooth connection. It has high latency, meaning it is not all too suitable for gaming as it would meant a sync-lapse of sound. That aside, it has Bluetooth 5.3 and allows for multiple connection (2 devices at one time) so you can link it up to your PC for work and your phone for calls as an example. I had all possible Bluetooth devices linked up; so my Garmin, Laptop, Mac and phone has the Q45 linked up. It will connect to whichever is nearest to me, and at times, I would need to disconnect one devices so it will link to the device I prefer (usually my Garmin as I don't need to bring my phone to stream the music).

As for Codec, it us defaulted to AAC, and you it can handle SBC and LDAC. So yes, High-Res Audio is possible provided your source can stream that - and if you are on Spotify, this is pretty meaningless as Spotify does not stream in High-Res. It's just nice to know you have that options should you move to other providers.

Tested: Strawberry. Crispy but soft. Melts in mouth. Decent bite factor (not mushy), not sweet. Satisfied eat as requires biting.

4 flavours - Raspberry, Orange, Sour Cherry (with 50mg Caffeine) and Lemon Green Tea. 80kcal. Energy for 30mins. 11 soft chew per pack.
Tested: Orange and Sour Cherry. Gummy-candy like texture. Melt in mouth. Sour Sugar coating on mine melted due to heat. Need to store in fridge. Not sweet but with (distinctive)fruit flavour.

3. Energy Bar Sport Fuel RM14

4 flavours - Raspberry Lemon, PB Choc, PB Strawberry and Cherry Pistachios. 280kcal. Eat when hungry. 4-5grams Protien. Low sugar vs leading brands (by 100%).Great snack. Good option for first meal pre-race.Tested: PB Choc and Cherry Pistachios. Not sticky or messy. Great texture. Nutty bites. Melts in mouth. Feel satisfied and satiated. Like PB Choc better than Cherry Pistachio (lighter taste).

Nike Winflo 9 Quick Review

With my son starting to train more (and seriously), I have to find a shoe to be on rotation between his tempo and racing shoes. All these while he is wearing and using the Asics Magic Speed 2 for time trail and racing, and the Brooks Hyperion Max for speedwork and everyday mileage. With mileage eating into the Hyperion Max, a replacement or rotation need to be considered.

This is also to allow for him to find his own "feel" when it comes to shoe - as what works for me may not work for him. With a bit privilege to choose we took a detour to Nike at GPO after his Triathlon Camp last weekend.

Before I start the quick review, my son has tried at Nike GPO these models: Pegasus 38, Pegasus 40, Structure 25, Streakfly and FreeRN. He did not like how the P38 and 40 felt as he say they felt "dead".

Structure 25 was restrictive on the midfoot much similar to Streakfly which he say he don't like how it felt against his arch. FreeRN was a bit too unstructured and he felt his feet is moving everywhere. And the Winflo 9 was the one that suits him - balance of space, fitting and response (based on jumping on spot and rolling around the feet).

There were 3 colors to choose - white, greenish and black. He did not fancy the white as he say will be hard to maintain, the greenish is a bit similar to the white - and he went for the black. They are priced at RM329, with the black to be cheapest at RM309 with additional 30% off. So this Winflo9 in black cost us a very affordable RM216.30 with 2-years return policy with Nike App. I say that is a big bargain in today's world where shoes are expensive. Winflo9 retail for RM409 new. Cheaper now as there is iteration 11 in the market.

The Nike Winflo9 looked like a basic trainer. Something that is suitable for all purpose use. Based on my limited experience with shoes, I would say that this shoe is suitable for easy runs not exceeding 10km and for everyday training. It's heavier than most trainers of similar specs (such as Brooks Launch series)

My Son's Feedback on Winflo9

Paraphrasing what my son told me about Winflo9, he says that the fit is good and secure. He do not feel there is any slip at the heel area and the tongue is "just nice" padded. The tie down is secure and he do not feel any part of his feet having pressure point when it is laced up. He like the slight rocker feel of the shoe but wished it is similar to the Hyperion Max that "makes me fall forward effortlessly". He feel that the midsole has some bounce, but not as plush compared to Hyperion Max and much firmer compared to Asics Magic Speed 2. He likes the flexibility of the shoe as it's similar to Hyperion Max. He do not feel "tall" and he did not felt unstable when compared to Asics Magic Speed 2. He likes that the shoe is slightly more structured (stiffer) on the upper than the Hyperion Max. He say this is definitely a daily trainer, and will go well in rotation with the Hyperion Max which he now can save for uptempo runs.

4. Blister Management

Trio of goodies that included a set of Blister Prevention Tape that comes in 20 precut of 3.5inches x 1.2inches strip for RM59, Chafe stick that can last up to 24hours per application for RM45 and in case you still get blister, a set of 6 Blister Treatment set for RM45. Not tested yet, as no blister. People with thick skin usually has minimal issues :P

5. Muscle Rub and Roll-On

We all know the enemy of these Kinesiology tapes could be oil-based rub that literally strip the adhesive off these tapes. KT Muscle rub and gel is water based and suitable to be used ON the tapes. KT Recovery+ Pain Relief Gel (RM39 for 100gram) can be used with the KT Tape without compromising the adhesion to skin. If you do not like liquid like rub, a roll-on applicator may just be the thing you are looking for. KT Health Pain Relief Roll On Gel is RM69 for 89ml. Tested both and works really well. Long lasting cold and warm sensation. Not messy and do not mess with the KT Tape.

6. KT Recovery+ Wave

Sound like pseudo-science product of the early 2000s but this device has proven to has relief pain and aid in recovery. Clinically proven and FDA cleared. Device emits electromagnetic pulse that are no-sensation (think of those EM patches that "jolt" muscles with bulky machines and messy wired patches) and safe to be used everyday. It has an on/off switch. Can last up to 250 hours or 720 hours depending on which version you have. I have the 250hours version.

I am convinced

I was 100% skeptic; and after 26hours of applying it onto my troubled right Achilles tendon, waking up the next day with almost zero tightness, I am a believer. I will have a separate write up on this. Tested and work.

7. KT Tape Pro Extreme - missed out in packing list

I believe I have covered almost all the KT Tape products but I know there is more. The opportunity to be part of the KT Tape family under Sunlight and McDavid is a privilege I can't be thankful enough, especially that it is surely converting me to be a believer that kinesiology taping does work when applied correctly. Here is how I taped my daughter's knee with a minor meniscus tear. It has been a week and she has commented that the knee felt way better and she is ready to introduce strength and weight bearing exercise to build the muscle around the knee area to further support it.

Brooks Hyperion Elite 4 : Unboxing & Technical Review

I have reviewed the Hyperion Elite 2 about 15 months ago and this shoe has since became my go to for most A-Races and has provided me a lot of mileage (in supershoe speaks). A quick recap of the "Elite" series since 2020:

The Hyperion Elite (Original Version 1) was worn as a prototype by Desiree Linden (Des Linden) in the 2018 Boston Marathon that she won.
Then in February of 2020, she was spotted with an updated version, which eventually became Elite 2, and made/submitted to be "race legal" before the Tokyo Olympic.
Des Linden then took the Elite 3 prototype and broke the 3 hour women 50km record.

The story did not end there, as 2023 (fall) saw the emergence of Hyperion Elite 4

In 2023, Des, Josh (Kerr) and CJ (Albertson) took the Elite 4 prototype and set new records for (Des) Chicago Marathon Women Master category (2:27:47), (Josh) World 1500m in 3:47 and his HM in 61:51, World record 50km (CJ) in 2:38:43.

And today's review is all about this new iteration that has been part of these record breakers' choice on their race day. While it is no coincidence that they are super-athlete, we all know at their level every little bits help, and Hyperion Elite 4 was one of the common denominator.

In The Still Of The Night

I received one of the five Hyperion Elite 4 that was allocated by Brooks Running Malaysia about a month ago. Needless to say, i went out in the middle of the night to collect it, that was how excited I was. No lies here as initially i thought the box given to me was half empty. It was that light. US12 doesn't come easy when it comes to pre-launch shoes, and I was hoping I wasn't pranked in the first place.

First seen in November during the Trade Show and I wasn't allowed to post any photos until it is "in my hand", so here it is!

Hello, Hyperion Elite 4 - Unboxing

First off, let me show it off in better lightings

The Elite 4 is a completely revamped Elite series if you were to compare it against the Elite 2 and Elite 3. There were only minor changes to Elite 3 which is the knitted upper when it was launched, and that was the reason I did not post any review as the Elite 2 was a good representation of it already.

What Has Changed

DNA Flash V2. A significant upgrade over V1 (where it is more "squishy" yet provided sufficient energy return). V2 is said to offer up to 10% more energy return that it's predecessor.
Completely redesigned upper. Engineered mesh which is super aerated (read: a lot of holes) while still providing a lot of snug fit. Spoiler - I would need socks because engineered mesh = non-seamless surface.
A new propulsion plate design known as "SpeedVault Race+" which is formed in lattice rather than in "one piece" designed by Arris. Because it is produced individually, it is customised to each pair size as to lend weight savings and ensure correct thickness to lend propulsion. Brooks says this is a customised plate.
Higher stack overall. Elite 2 and 3 comes in at 37-29 and the Elite 4 is bestowed at maximum race legal of 40-32. Drop remained at 8mm.
Lighter. The Elite 4 at US12 that I own comes in at 251g vs Elite 2 and 3 that is at 256grams. 5grams of savings and just 12grams more than the Hyperion Tempo (that is at lower stack and no plate). Versus the Elite 3, the Elite 4 is 25 grams lighter at US9 sizing, officially at 221grams.

Holey Shoes

The Upper

This shoe breathe. It's so holey I believe the upper will dry out when wet even before you end your 10km run should it rain. The holes are everywhere, including the tongue and the heel collar. Safe to say this is really a benchmark set by Brooks themselves for future upper.

Despite this, the toe box has the reinforcement at the front to both protect the toes and also to keep the shape. It's something I've noticed consistent throughout most, if not all Brooks shoes.

The laces that comes with the Elite4 is not stretchable and it has jagged edges which lend to how the shoe secure to your feet once you tie it down. This meant you get a very firm lock down at the right pressure you need. That is how you should feel the first time you tie them down.

The tongue is super thin and unpadded with (again) many holes. It is not gusseted and in my wear testing, i had no issues as the tongue doesn't fold at the sides when i slide my legs in. It kept it's position when compared to Elite 2 and 3.

The heel cup has additional padding that goes 3-quarter from one side to the other. This is some changes to the Elite 2 and 3 where one side goes almost to the first hole of the laces. I did not find this to significantly change the comfort in the Elite 2/3 and 4.

The Stacks

Now that we got the upper out of the way. As shared, the Elite 4 stack height is at 32mm (forefoot) and 40mm (heel) which gives it a 8mm drop shoe. This changes is significant when you compared it with Elite 2 and 3. Those 2mm makes a lot of differences especially when it comes to cushioning and put in the new midsole DNA Flash V2, it is easy to understand why Brooks claim ( up to) 10% more energy return.

It is impressive that despite all of these additional, the weight were lighter. Thanks for DNA Flash V2 where it is a super-critical foam infused with Nitrogen. It not only made them light, but made them responsive as well. This engineered foam is available full length and adaptive to every stride. The DNA gel is adaptive to the force applied so you get it firm when you picked up the speed and cushioned when you does an easy.

Completely new and redesigned by Arris Composite and it is known as "Additive Moulding". Brooks partnered with Arris in Boston Marathon and it garnered quite an attention and had an interview in Forbes!

So what this meant is that each pair of Elite 4 at different sizing has a specific carbon composite lattice specifically designed and produced as to maximize it's potential and energy return.

While most manufacturer makes the plate to be generic and "cut to fit" into each size (imagine a piece of cloth being cut to size according to the shape of the shoe), Brooks and Arris makes them specific to each size. This is important as the placement of the cuts has to be correct, lending the right level of stiffness and flexibility where needed.

Unlike the Elite 2 and 3, this carbon (propulsion) plate is not visibly sandwiched between two layers of DNA flash material. It is molded into the midsole which is an improvement over the Elite 2 and 3.

Now that you see them up close, you will then notice the curvature or up-curve at the heel and the front. It gives the shoe the distinctive "super shoe" sole curve that lend to a fast feet turnover. Different shoe brand call it differently. Saucony call theirs "Speedroll", Hoka call theirs "Metarocker", Asics with their "Metaride" and Brooks version is known as Rapid Roll Technology.

Essentially, they are "rocker" shoes and they encourage fast feet turning over at speed. One feature that you may had observed is that the foam of the sole over-extend past the shoe upper itself. At the back, the sole overextend past the heel by more than 5mm. This is similar for the Elite 2 and 3.

The front mid-foot and toe however has not seen the same flaring from the top. Brooks running could had improved the stability of the midsole without having to over-extend the midsole. For info, many of these high-stacked supershoes are notorious to be unstable.

2mm thick. That is how much real rubber between the DNA Flash V2 and the tarmac. The coverage is less than 50%. It is designed for those with good midfoot/forefoot mechanic. If you are a heel striker, you may wear this pair out faster due to the very limited heel pad.

The coverage is much less than the Elite 2 and 3. If the outsole material is similar to Elite 2, 3 and the Hyperion Max, I believe it will last pretty well. My Elite 2 and 3 has surpassed 200km and looked pretty good for a thin outsole supershoe, and my Max has surpassed 650km and good for another 150km easily.

Last Item - The Liner

The Elite 4 socks liner is thin and light. It is semi-glued down which help it to hold it's place and not move when it is wet. However that strange placement of the sizing tab right under the arch (and sewn on the socks liner) need to be reposition or have the easy option to tear off or removed.

First Feel

I called the Elite 2 as "fix my life shoe" because it was the first legit carbon plated shoes I ever worn and raced in. Then the Elite 3 came about and I could not thanks Brooks Malaysia enough. With minor upgrade to the upper (knitted vs engineered), the differences wasn't sufficient to accept it as an upgrade.

BUT, when Hyperion Elite 4 was first showcased in November 2023, I knew this is a totally different super shoe from the Elite range, and rightly so.

The upper laces down very securely. It took me only one adjustment to find and lock into the shoe. Toe box despite only "D" is very generous. Mid-foot lateral lockdown was very secure. I wore socks because this shoe upper is not as smooth as Elite 2 or 3 (because 4 has so many holes and super engineered to save weight). The jagged/staggered not stretchable lace ties down securely and despite the lack of padding on the tongue, i felt no pressure point at all on the upper part of my feet.

Right First Time

A few jumps told me that the shoe is springier than the Elite 2 and 3. I had to cycle through all three shoes at this indoor jump and roll testing to make sure I wasn't being biased with my feel. Elite 2 (higher mileage at 250km) and Elite 3 (at lower 50km) felt more squishy or cushioned when compared to Elite 4. Every forced step allows me to compress the DNA Flash V1 more. However the Elite 4 DNA Flash V2 felt much firmer.

Having been spoilt by all the variants of Brooks Running shoes I know how the RapidRoll rocker feels. Being used to them all motion wise, I was expecting the same with Elite 4. I was not wrong in assuming it as the Elite 4 roll off to the toe effortlessly, just like the Elite 2, 3, Hyperion Max, Ghost Max and even the Cascadia 16 (Trail). I have written reviews for each of them so do check them out in my REVIEW tab at the top of my blog.

RapidRoll was good, minimal effort to step up to my toes from stationary

Knowing that the midsole is firmer, it also meant there should technically be more energy return. Something firm bounces easier than something softer. Example, if you inflate a ball to be very firm/hard, it bounces higher than an under-inflated ball. Wearing both Elite 4 vs the 2/3 and 4 gives me exactly that analogy.

The Hyperion Elite 4 bounces like a ball that is properly inflated vs the Ghost Max which is a super cushioned trainer. Then you can see how the carbon plate lattice spring the shoe away from me about 4 foot as i press it down and launched it. Full resolution of the YouTube Shorts here

In the video above, you can also see how the carbon lattice took some effort for me to bend and press down. It then launched the shoe to quite a distance approximately 4 feet away from me. Here it is again, hopefully Blogger video streaming is better than YouTube (yes, I am testing them here)

Soon after the indoor testing, I did a 6x400m Interval using the Elite 4. This is how the data for the last set looked like; 363W at 3:16 pace over 141bpm. GCT was 195ms and efficiency (FPR) of 0.18. The Elite 4 truly perform and absolutely love speed.

This was a very good representation as I have a 5km TT coming up in two days. And I was convinced how this Elite 4 will help me break 20mins again.

Clearly (first) Run Happy on Hyperion Elite 4

Two days later, I took it out for a 20mins/5km Time Trail. What better way to test the shoe than to make it or break the 20mins mark again after almost 10 months. Personal best for 5km distance remained at 18:50 over a flat elevation and the route I am taking will have elevation at half of the route, and I would need to run 2 loops to make the 5km distance. I am chasing that 20mins and ready to push hard.

Warm up 12mins

The warm up gave me a very good idea what my indoor testing and first run told me. The shoe is firm, stable despite the stack, very controlled on the foot with minimal side-to-side movement, solid transition from heel-mid-toe (yes, I do land heel on my left foot, somehow), responsive as I can feel the midsole pushes back, and very subtle plate feel. I know the plate was there (well...) and i can feel it propelling me, but yet, the midsole firmness neutralizes it. Infact, for a 40mm stacked supershoe, i actually felt the ground.

As shown in the 12mins graph above, the main metric is the power at 257W where I ran at pace 4:47 at HR of 132bpm. Ground contact time was 241ms and Leg Spring Stifness (LSS) 9.8kN/m which relates to the theorectical spring loaded on the feet (mainly changes with shoes) and I was running at efficiency of (Form Power Ratio or FPR) 0.27. For an easy effort, there were significant power return vs my usual easy run (240w) over the pace of 4:55 at similar HR but lower LSS and FPR This is using Ghost Max (cushioned non-plated, 40mm stack)

For Easy runs:

Power savings of more than 10w
Faster pace of more than 8s/km
Higher LSS (more loaded "spring" in the legs) at 0.8kN/m
Higher efficiency (almost 0.2factor)

The 5km Time Trail

20mins/5km Effort @ 19:44

The test was conducted in EG of 58m (average 0.6 gradient) vs the PB (18:50) over 1m EG (0 gradient). You can see from the graph above the route profile. I kept the power as consistent as I can running up and down these elevation. Those pace (blue) drop is likely due to sensor disconnection intermittently, which is minimal concern as the focus was on power.

The Hyperion Elite 4 is fast

I clocked my 5km Season Best of 19:44. 300W at 3:57 pace over 153bpm HR. GCT was 212ms and LSS was at 9.8kN/m. Efficiency was much higher at 0.23. Just this data alone doesn't tell much unless I compared it to the Elite 2 which I used for a 4x4:15 SupraThreshold run.

Run 67: Supra Threshold On Elite 2

The EG was lower (48m) with overall gradient to be about 0.5. I held the power at 305W at 4:02 pace at 150HR (last set, give me some breathing space k), with GCT of 211ms, LSS of 9.8kN/m. Efficiency (FPR) was similar 0.23. One other metric which i would inject in is the Impact Loading Rate (ILR) of 70bw/s or 70bodyweight/second on each legs.

What does these two runs very close to each other, using two different iteration tells me?

Elite 4 vs Elite 2 : Fast Run

Watt (energy) savings - I was running faster at 3:57 vs 4:05 at 5w lower.
Similar effort (HR) - 20mins vs 4x4:15 (approx 18mins) of 3bpm expense
Similar LSS, GCT and ILR - debunking that the perception of Elite 2 being "softer" and Elite 4 being "firmer" is just more "feel" than actual data shown.
Higher bounce - Elite 4 returns 0.25cm or 2.5mm more bounce from vertical oscilation (VO) perspective

The Hyperion Elite 4 DNA Flash V2 "more responsive by up to 10%" claims seems to hold water with the watt savings (1.7% - it is all about the "next percent") and a hefty 8s/km pace improvement sums up the experience on Elite 4. By the way, that 8s/km translate to me running the 5km in 20:30 or 40s slower in today's fitness...that is significant.

Smoking Fast

TL:DR

Hyperion Elite 4 is a carbon (lattice) plated fast, responsive, as cushioned, efficient shoe and fast light and stacked super shoe. A totally revamped of the Elite series, and I dare say, a totally different shoe altogether. It looked right there on the start line and does not looked like an out of place supershoe. It reminds me of a traditional racing flat of the yesteryear - and if this shoe were to go back in time, it will blend right in - PLUS the technology which will give that back to the future runner a significant edge over others.

Don't get me wrong with the yesteryear reference, it simply meant for me of not fixing anything that wasn't broken. Hyperion Elite 4 indeed has brought back that feel for some runners that felt the super shoes of today has too much hype than actual performance. The record set by the users (Des, Josh and CJ) speaks volume when it was just at Prototype stage, and my personal run, which not national level, gives me a lot of confidence to toe the start line and knowing I will break my own limits.

From distance racing perspective, I would say this Hyperion Elite 4 is at home for races up to Half Marathon for many. For myself, this is an upgrade of the Elite 2 and 3 which I ran Full Marathon in without any issues. Elite 4 will be my racing shoe for 2024.

Pros

Light. Fast. Cushioned. Plated.
You feel grounded despite the stack, yet you know the shoe will provide adequate cushioning with the DNA Flash V2
Great fit. Generous toe box.
No noticeable hot spot in all the runs I did, maybe because I wore socks
No heel slips despite drenched in sweat. Very secure.
Very secure road-grip feel. No indication of slippage under faster pace, wet surface (it's been raining) or smooth (Bukit Jalil pavement)

Cons

When compared to other Supershoes (i've tried MagicSpeed2, Peaks V3, NB SC Elite), it is not as "cushioned", "bouncy" or gives the impression of cushioned ride - because they all have PEBA/X
DNA Flash V2 is EVA foam in supercritical stage injected with (more) Nitrogen than the older DNA Flash V1
Relatively expensive when compared to the other Supershoes (but I have discount code below 😄)
