Hidden underneath all of this deliciousness is mineral-rich spinach and dulse, a type of sea vegetable.</p>
<p>Jackfruit can be hard to find anywhere but Asian markets.  You can buy a whole fruit, which is quite large and will yield enough fruit for about 8 or so smoothie recipes.  Many Asian markets also serve portioned jackfruit, which is more manageable if you&#8217;re new to this fruit.</p>
<p>I added frozen pureed acai instead of acai juice to add some healthy fiber. Acai puree is loaded with vitamins and minerals. The dulse flakes add minerals, particularly iodine, without giving a &#8220;fishy&#8221; or &#8220;saltwater&#8221; taste, despite being a sea vegetable (seaweed).</p>
<h4>Acai-Jackfruit Green Smoothie Recipe with Dulse</h4>
<ul>
<li>1 mango, peeled and pitted</li>
<li>1/2 cup jackfruit</li>
<li>1 pound 100g frozen sweetened acai puree (I use <a href="http://www.amafruits.com/">Amafruits Acai Puree</a>) </li>
<li>1/2 teaspoon dulse flakes</li>
<li>3 cups baby spinach</li>
<li>8 ounces filtered water</li>
</ul>
<p>Start by adding the liquid to your blender (I use a <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/vitamix/">Vitamix</a>), followed by the soft fruit.  Add the greens to your blender last. Blend on high for 30 seconds or until the smoothie is creamy.</p>

<p>Serving Size: One. (This recipe makes a large, 32-ounce smoothie. It is a meal-replacement smoothie and not a snack. I recommend drinking half right away and the other half about 30 minutes later. If it is too much for you, store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.)</p>

This recipe provides an excellent source of vegan protein.  There is 15 grams of protein in four chickpea nuggets, which also provide an excellent source of calcium, iron and dietary fiber.</p>
<p>For this recipe, I used organic, whole wheat veggie wraps (either spinach or sun-dried tomato). You can use a sprouted grain or a gluten-free wrap if you wish, or use a large romaine or collard leaf.</p>
<p>This recipe is quite versatile.  Feel free to turn up the heat by sprinkling in some cayenne pepper, or add some jalapeno peppers.</p>
<p>This recipe makes two servings.</p>
<h4>Ingredients: </h4>
<ul>

<li>2 whole wheat, sprouted grain, or gluten-free wraps</li>
<li>3 cups shredded romaine lettuce</li>
<li>1/2 avocado</li>
<li>3 campari tomatoes, sliced </li>
<li>1 tablespoon lime juice</li>
<li>dash of sea salt</li>
<li>2 to 3 tablespoons water</li>
<li>dash of cayenne pepper</li>
<li>Additional veggies if desired</li>
</ul>
<h4>Directions: </h4>

<p>Start by making the dressing. Mash the avocado into a bowl. Add the lime juice, sea salt, cayenne pepper and 2 tablespoons of water and stir. Add more water for desired texture. </p>
<p>Place each wrap on a large plate.  Add half of the lettuce to each wrap followed by the tomatoes and any additional vegetables that you would like to add. </p>
<p>Next, add four chickpea nuggets to each wrap and top with avocado dressing. </p>
<p>Fold the wrap ends in and roll into a wrap. Eat and enjoy.</p>

If you love chickpeas and falafel, you&#8217;ll love these tasty baked chickpea nuggets!  They are perfect with salads, or in wraps, or even on their own.</p>
<p>These chickpea nuggets are great source of protein. There is 15 grams of protein in just four of these nuggets! They are also loaded with calcium, iron, folate, manganese, zinc and fiber. Four nuggets contain 12.5 grams of dietary fiber! </p>
<p>You can play around with the spices by adding cayenne or chili pepper for a spicy southwestern take on this recipe. You can also roll the uncooked nugget in bread crumbs (I didn&#8217;t).  This recipe is very versatile, and half the fun is trying new things. </p>
<p>I chose to cook my own chickpeas, but you can use canned if you don&#8217;t have time to boil your own. You can also make a large batch and freeze some for later use.</p>
<p>I made a really easy dipping sauce with avocado, but you can make any dipping sauce you would like. I mashed 1/4 avocado, 1 teaspoon lime juice, 1 tablespoon water and a dash of sea salt. <p>This recipe makes 8 nuggets, which is about two servings.</p>
<h4>Ingredients: </h4>
<ul>
<li>1/2 cup dried chickpeas (2 cups cooked chickpeas)</li>
<li>1 clove of garlic, minced</li>
<li>1/2 teaspoon cumin</li>
<li>dash of sea salt</li>
<li>1/2 teaspoon basil</li>
<li>1/2 teaspoon marjoram</li>
<li>1/2 teaspoon oregano</li>
<li>1/2 teaspoon thyme</li>
<li>1/2 cup crushed organic, all-natural corn flakes (any brand is fine).
 </ul>
<h4>Directions: </h4>
<p>Soak the chickpeas overnight. (To fast soak, boil chickpeas in water for 20 minutes (Use one part beans to three parts water). Cover and let sit for 2 hours. </p>
<p>Once the chickpeas are soaked and ready to cook, add them to a large sauce pan with five cups water. Cook over high heat until the water boils, then lower the heat and simmer for about 1 and 1/2 hours.  Keep the pan covered. </p>
<p>When chickpeas are fully cooked, drain the water and add them to food processor or high-speed blender, along with the rest of the ingredients. Process using the &#8220;S&#8221; blade if using a food processor.</p>
<p>You want the chickpea nuggets to have a thick consistency so you can form them into nuggets. The mixture should not be so thick that it is dry and crumbly, however. If the mixture is seems too mushy, add more crushed corn flakes until you get a semi-dry &#8220;batter&#8221; that will form into a patty and hold its shape.</p>

<p>Roll mixture into little balls and then flatten into nuggets. Nuggets should be about 1/2 an inch thick.  Optional: For a breaded coating, lightly roll each ball in additional corn flake crumbs. </p>

<p>Preheat oven to 400 degrees (Fahrenheit).  Lightly grease a cooking sheet with coconut oil and place nuggets on the sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, flipping them half way through. </p>
<p>Remove from over and enjoy! </p>

<p>Wheatgrass tastes similar to spinach or other dark leafy greens, which has helped its popularity in juice and smoothie bars. It is gluten-free, as it contains no actual wheat.</p>
<p>Wheatgrass can be found in health food stores, standard grocery stores, and even pet food stores, where it is marketed as &#8220;cat grass&#8221;.</p>
<h4>Wheatgrass Nutrition and Health Benefits</h4>
<p>Wheatgrass is high in antioxidants and nutrients. It contains iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A (as beta-carotene), vitamin C and vitamin E. </p>
<p>Wheatgrass is considered a &#8220;medicinal superfood&#8221;, and there are many proposed health benefits with regular consumption. In fact, the list of health conditions it supposedly treats is lengthy and includes anemia, diabetes, tooth decay, high blood pressure, digestion problems, high cholesterol, bladder infections, kidney stones, common colds, bronchitis, fever, sore throat, gout, wound healing, liver disorders, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, skin conditions, and even cancer.  </p>
<p>However, there isn&#8217;t really any conclusive scientific evidence that wheatgrass itself is more effective at treating any of these conditions than a placebo.  In fact, all of the benefits of wheatgrass can be obtained from any other dark, leafy green &#8211; and especially a daily green smoothie habit.</p>
<p>Now that doesn&#8217;t mean that wheatgrass is a waste of money.  I like the flavor, and it can be yet another ingredient to fortify your green smoothies with.</p>
<h4>How To Use Wheatgrass In A Green Smoothie</h4>
<p>Wheatgrass has a distinctive flavor that some people either love or hate.  I&#8217;m one who loves it. </p>
<p>I recommend using either freshly extracted wheatgrass juice (use a dedicated wheatgrass juicer) or a powdered supplement (like Amazing Grass brand) that you can pour into a green smoothie.  If you use the juice, add just a little bit.  Start with 1/2 shot, and work your way up to one or two. However, don&#8217;t dump 6-8 ounces of wheatgrass juice in your blender unless you want a vile flavor surprise in your smoothie!</p>
<p>Since the cellulose in grass is exceptionally tough, you will not be able to extract the nutrients effectively by blending whole wheatgrass in even a high-end blender.  The tough fibers may even cause digestive difficulties.</p>
<h4>Wheatgrass Green Smoothie Recipes</h4>
<p><strong>Pineapple-Wheatgrass Green Smoothie</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>1/2 cup green grapes</li>
<li>1/2 shot of wheatgrass or 1/2 packet of powdered wheatgrass</li>

<h4>How To Select Wheatgrass</h4>
<p>Wheatgrass has a growing cycle of seven to fourteen days. As such, it can be found year round in stores, or you can grow it yourself. If you are purchasing wheatgrass raw, do not purchase or consumme wheatgrass that has turned yellow. Raw wheatgrass can be stored in a container in the refrigerator for approximately seven to eight days.  However, it&#8217;s at its best when you can harvest it right on your kitchen windowsill, and then juice it immediately.</p>

I used fresh, organic strawberries and peaches, accented the flavor with vanilla bean and homemade pistachio nut milk.</p>
<p>Peaches are one of my favorite fruits.  Toward late spring, I eagerly await their arrival in local fruit markets. I often cut them up and eat them before they actually end up in my green smoothies. Peaches are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, lycopene and lutein.  Research shows that lycopene and lutein may help prevent heart disease, macular degeneration and certain cancers.</p>
<p>The strawberries, carrot and dandelion greens are loaded with antioxidants. Dandelion greens are also a great source of protein, iron and calcium. They are one of my favorite greens to add a green smoothie. </p>
<h4>Peach-Strawberry-Vanilla Green Smoothie Recipe with Pistachio Milk</h4>
<ul>
<li>3 medium peaches, pitted</li>
<li>13 medium strawberries </li>
<li>The vanilla from one vanilla bean</li>
<li>1 large carrot, chopped</li>
<li>3 cups dandelion greens, chopped</li>
<li>8 ounces <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/recipes/how-to-make-your-own-pistachio-milk/">homemade pistachio milk</a></li>

<p>Start by adding the liquid to your blender (I use a <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/vitamix/">Vitamix</a>), followed by the soft fruit.  Add the greens to your blender last. Blend on high for 30 seconds or until the smoothie is creamy.</p>

<p>Serving Size: One. (This recipe makes a large, 32-ounce smoothie. It is a meal-replacement smoothie and not a snack. I recommend drinking half right away and the other half about 30 minutes later. If it is too much for you, store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.)</p>

I will attempt to answer this question in this post.</p>
<p><em><strong>First, you should know that I am not a doctor, and that absolutely nothing in this post should be taken as medical advice. Always work with your doctor before making any dietary or lifestyle changes when you have a medical condition, such as diabetes.  Keep in mind that your results may vary from somebody else s.</strong></em></p>
<p>Okay, now with that out of the way&#8230;</p>
<p>The biggest concern that diabetics have about green smoothies is their sugar content.  It is true that fruit contains glucose (and fructose).  People with metabolic disorders such as diabetes should strictly monitor their carbohydrate intake &#8211; including the amount of sugar that they get from each meal.  But this doesn&#8217;t mean that you can&#8217;t have any fruit, or that green smoothies are not for you.</p>
<p>Fresh, whole fruits, as well as blended green smoothies not only provide a healthy way for diabetics to get more fruits and vegetables in their diet, green smoothies also may help reverse some of the diet and lifestyle problems that exacerbate diabetes, or contributes to its progression.  </p>
<h4>How Green Smoothies Have Helped My Readers With Diabetes</h4>
<p><img src="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Smoothie2.jpg" alt="Green Smoothie Recipes For Type 2 Diabetes" width="250" height="217" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12712" />I have collected countless testimonies from readers here on Incredible Smoothies who have told me about how green smoothies have benefited their diabetic condition.  I have heard from people who no longer need anti-diabetes medication, and who have brought their high blood sugar into the normal range!</p>
<p>One of the most striking green smoothie success stories I&#8217;ve published on Incredible Smoothies was from a reader named Charles.  He told me about how green smoothies helped him lose 35 pounds in 11 weeks, and his doctor took him off insulin! <p>These stories are pretty typical of what I hear from type 2 diabetics who start drinking green smoothies.  </p>
<h4>Potential Ways Green Smoothies Benefit Diabetics</h4>

I don&#8217;t believe that there is a specific fruit or vegetable combination that does the trick.  Instead, a daily green smoothie kicks off a chain-reaction of lifestyle changes that reduce or eliminate the factors that exacerbate the disease, and reverses the condition in some individuals.</p>
<p>The top three benefits of green smoothies for type 2 diabetes are:</p>
<p><strong>1 &#8211; Weight Loss:</strong>  Excess weight is a known risk factor for type 2 diabetes.  Those who lose weight through diet and exercise are often able to reverse and effectively manage their diabetes.  Green smoothies are a potent weight loss strategy that boosts fruit and vegetable intake.</p>
<p><strong>2 &#8211; Energy to Exercise:</strong>  Exercise is another method that is known to reduce the symptoms and severity of diabetes.  The overwhelming majority of those I&#8217;ve interviewed who drink green smoothies report having more energy and exercising.  Green smoothies are fitness food! <p><strong>3 &#8211; Healthier Diet Overall:</strong>  Green smoothies are a step toward a diet and lifestyle overhaul that inevitably follows.  The overwhelming majority of people I&#8217;ve interviewed who drink green smoothies on a regular basis also consume much less processed foods.  Their diet evolves in a direction of plant-based, lower calorie, higher nutrition, health-supporting.  I have experienced this in my own life as well.  Before green smoothies, I&#8217;d be lucky to get one serving of vegetables a day.  Today, I will consume more than 12 servings of fruits and vegetables, most of which are in my green smoothies!</p>
<h4>Green Smoothie Recipes By Diabetics</h4>
<p>I reached out to my readers with type 2 diabetes for green smoothie recipes.  I&#8217;ve compiled the list here, along with some anecdotes about how each recipe affects their blood sugar. </p>
<h4>Lana&#8217;s Green Smoothie</h4>
<ul>
<li>Handful of spinach</li>
<li>3 slices of cucumber</li>
<li>1/2 stalk of celery</li>
<li>1 teaspoon of organic cinnamon</li>
<li>2 frozen strawberries</li>
<li>1 tablespoon of flax seed</li>
<li>1/2 cup of blueberries(frozen or fresh)</li>
<li>3 tablespoon of organic rolled oats</li>
<li>1 tablespoon of raw cacao</li>
<li>6 ounces of unsweetened almond milk</li>
</ul>
<p>Blast all the ingredients in a Nutri Bullet and enjoy! Makes around 8 to 10 ounces.</p>

<p>I drink one green smoothie every morning. I have tested before having a green smoothie in the morning and then went to an exercise class, tested again, and it made blood sugar go into the normal range. Example: Morning blood sugar was 130, two or three hours later it was 95! Normal range!</p>

<h4>Barbara&#8217;s Green Smoothie</h4>
<p>I have a green smoothie every morning for breakfast and it is:</p>

<li>1 small orange, peeled</li>
<li>2 big handfuls of spinach</li>
<li>1 large kale or chard leaf or 2 baby bok choi (nutrition info is for 1 kale leaf)</li>
<li>1/2 cup frozen mixed berries (nutrition info is for blueberries)</li>
<li>1 serving vegan protein powder</li>
<li>1 teaspoon goji berries, soaked for 10 minutes</li>
<li>1 teaspoon chia seeds</li>
<li>1 cup unsweetened organic coconut milk</li>
</ul>
<p>water to adjust consistency to personal preference</p>

<p>This makes approximately 4 cups of finished smoothie.</p>
<p>To change it up, I will add a small handful of cilantro, a sprinkle of cayenne pepper, a tblsp of pureed pumpkin, or a tblsp of shredded coconut.</p>
<p>I am Type 2 (since 2008 when I quit smoking and gained 20 lbs), but am NOT on any medications for it, and never have been nor will I be if I can prevent it.  </p>
<p>Because I add the protein powder to my smoothies, they don&#8217;t affect my blood sugar very much (well within the acceptable 2 point increase two hours after eating &#8211; Canadian measurements), certainly much less than a &#8220;conventional&#8221; breakfast did before.  In general my blood sugar numbers have been steadily getting better since adding green smoothies to my lifestyle.</p>

<h4>Joann&#8217;s Green Smoothie</h4>

<li>1/2 cup strawberries, with tops still on</li>

<li>1 scoop of sugar free chocolate protein powder</li>

<li>1/4 cup soaked chia seed (it will be thick and gelatinous) [about 2 tablespoons dry seeds]</li>
<li>A small handful of raw pumpkin seed or walnuts [nutrition information below is for 2 tablespoons walnuts]</li>

<p>I add water and blend. There&#8217;s nothing better than a Nutriblast in the morning!</p>
<p>The more careful I am with the ingredients, the less impact green smoothies have on my blood sugar level. Since I have been making green smoothies and eating at least a 50% raw diet raw (fruits and veggies), I have cut my insulin use in more than half! I can&#8217;t wait to see my A1C next month!</p>
<p>I drink one every morning when I wake up and take my medication. My diabetes is Prednisone-induced, so I have to take insulin (Novalin NPH 26 units) immediately after I take my Prednisone. I have a nutritious green smoothie and it has minimal impact on my blood sugar. As a result, I don&#8217;t have to take my Novalog Pen like I would with a normal breakfast.</p>

<h4>Suzanna&#8217;s Green Smoothie</h4>
<ul>
<li>2 ounces of spinach</li>
<li>2 ounces of kale</li>
<li>1 ounce of hemp seeds</li>
<li>136 grams of banana (1 large)</li>
<li>a tiny bit of Stevia if I wish to have it sweeter. </li>
<li>1.5-2 cups of water</li>
</ul>

<p>I blend it in NutriBullet until it becomes deliciously smooth and thick. Makes the full Bullet, about 24 ounces and 300 calories. </p>
<p>I drink two shakes per day. Sometimes three during the hot days as I make them ice cold and they are very refreshing. </p>
<p>They keep the blood sugar stable, yet deliver an extreme burst of energy. I can play tennis for two hours after having this little shake, performing at high level. Never feel any high-followed-by-crash. It&#8217;s amazing how great the green shakes work.</p>

<h4>Chris&#8217; Green Smoothie</h4>

<p>I drink 1 or two green smoothies each day, always for breakfast.  I see less of a spike with smoothies than eating a &#8220;traditional&#8221; meal that is supposed to be for diabetics.</p>

<p>My husband turned 62 on 4/29.  He has type 2 diabetes &#038; all the major issues that come with never being able to get control. Last November, we made some changes. Green Smoothies top the list. He no longer takes Humalog (was taking 150 units a day). He is still taking Lantus (100 units a day), but cutting that back soon. His blood sugar is under control!!! His average is 124. No more spikes! </p>
<p>He has lost 50 pounds and is down to 260 now &#038; feels good. We just finished a 4 day cleanse Fruits &#038; veggies ONLY He did great if anything his sugar ran a bit low &#038; had to eat more &#038; often. I kept track of everything &#038; checked his sugar hourly. Morning lemon water and chia seeds are a big key.</p>

<p>I have home made green smoothies  every second day on average, usually for breakfast, as this suits my lifestyle best. My blood sugar levels are good following this sort of blend. If other fruit (e.g. banana or mango) is used, my readings are higher. </p>

<p>I was one of those people who was worried about how my [blood] sugar would react to the smoothies since I am diabetic type 2. For the first week, I checked my blood sugar before and one hour and two hours after my green smoothies. My fingers were so sore that week but what I learned is that the smoothies seem to have a normalizing affect on my blood sugar level instead of increasing it.</p>
<p>After the smoothies, my one and two hour blood sugar measurements never increased by more than 20 points over the before smoothie level. That&#8217;s amazing!</p>

<h4>Carol&#8217;s Green Smoothie</h4>
<ul>
<li>Juice from 1&#8243; fresh ginger root (I put it thru my Omega Vertical Juicer and then add about 1/4 cup water to help wash out all the juice, and then hand squeeze the pulp to make sure I get it all)</li>
<li>About 8 oz water, more later if too thick.</li>
<li>1-2 tsp ground cinnamon (I use the big cinnamon bottles you get at Costco and just do about 2-3 really good squeezes on the bottle)</li>
<li>1/4 tsp turmeric</li>
<li>1 Tbsp coconut oil</li>
<li>1 Tbsp chia seeds</li>
<li>1 Tbsp raw cacao powder</li>
<li>1-2 shakes of the cayenne pepper bottle (to taste)</li>
<li>Can add 1 Tbsp dried goji berries and 1 tsp kelp powder if you like.</li>
</ul>
<p>Mix lightly in VitaMix then let sit for the chia seeds and goji berries to soften up while you add the rest of the frozen ingredients:</p>
<ul>
<li>1/2 to 1 cup fresh spouts (I just grab a handful)</li>
<li>1-2 small pieces of frozen bananas (I let my bananas ripen just right, then cut them in thirds or quarters depending on their size, put them on cookie tray in freezer until frozen,  &#8211; then transfer to a ziplock bag and keep in freezer &#8211; never have to worry about losing bananas due to over ripening)</li>
<li>1/4 cup (heaping) frozen blueberries or berry combination</li>
<li>3 individual frozen sweet cheeries (just for the sweetness &#8211; can be less or left out)</li>
</ul>
<p>Start VitaMix on low, move to high and let mix for about a minute.  Pour out into large mug or glass.</p>
<p>This is not very sweet, but has lots of good stuff for diabetics.  I usually consume it as breakfast, then follow up either at lunch or dinner with a green smoothie, and eat one small meal of regular food.</p>
<p>When I have it available I add kombucha or other fermented drink instead of part of the water.  I used to add yogurt, but learned that dairy products stop the raw cacao benefits.  So I keep any dairy for later in the day.</p>
<p><em>When I&#8217;m truly doing the two smoothies (cacao and green) each day, I can keep my blood glucose down in the normal range for fasting, and about 120 when eating.  My A1C came back in normal range this last test, and it had been quite high before.</p>
<p>By the way, I went from 210+ lbs in December 2010 to 159 this month.  Still have another 20 lbs to go to my target of mid 130s.</p>
<p>I try to get in one cacao smoothie and one green smoothie (using spinach, celery, 1 piece frozen banana, spouts, and sometimes part of an avocado) per day.</em></p>

This particular combination is heaven for your tongue!</p>
<p>Jackfruit tastes like a combination of mango, pineapple and banana.  Many people say it tastes like Wrigley&#8217;s Juicy Fruit gum.  This flavor is wonderfully accented by peaches, with banana adding a little extra creaminess. <p>The vanilla accents the fruity blend, and you won&#8217;t ever taste the broccoli (yes, broccoli!) that provides a super dose of minerals to this recipe.  Frozen broccoli is not as strongly flavored as fresh, but it&#8217;s just as nutritious providing vitamin A (as beta-carotene), vitamin C, and folate.</p>
<h4>Jackfruit-Peach Green Smoothie Recipe with Vanilla</h4>
<ul>
<li>1 medium peach, pitted</li>
<li>3/4 cup jackfruit (separated from the seeds)</li>
<li>1 medium banana, peeled</li>
<li>The vanilla from one vanilla bean</li>
<li>1/2 cup frozen broccoli</li>
<li>1 head butterhead lettuce</li>
<li>8 ounces <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/recipes/how-to-make-your-own-almond-milk/">homemade almond milk</a></li>

<p>Start by adding the liquid to your blender (I use a <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/vitamix/">Vitamix</a>), followed by the soft fruit.  Add the greens to your blender last. Blend on high for 30 seconds or until the smoothie is creamy.</p>

<p>Serving Size: One. (This recipe makes a large, 32-ounce smoothie. It is a meal-replacement smoothie and not a snack. I recommend drinking half right away and the other half about 30 minutes later. If it is too much for you, store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.)</p>
