I've been taking a long break from video. I haven't uploaded a video, or even logged into youtube in quite some time. I'm doing this because, quite honestly, my grades suck. I have a week long break from school right now (yay president's week), so I have time to make a post.

So, some changes:

The division of posting. I started a blog for more personal postings early in January. I've been neglecting that blog as well, but not as much as this one. The idea is that this blog is more professional, and my other one is more about my personal life.

I try to keep this blog related to online video with at least one paragraph (hey, the one on yes on 8 had a paragraph on Tung's entry to Campus Movie Fest...) devoted to that topic. However, this a topic I feel strongly about, and, something I feel that I need to tell y'all about.
Ok, I lied, I will have an online video series made to "educate" people on linux. There's your relation to online video.

Anyway. I was reading slashdot today, one of the articles links to the HeliOS blog, where the founder tells of a letter he received from a teacher in Austin, TX. This letter boils down to "Cease and desist or I will sue".

That was the trigger to this post. I've been itching to write about linux, but honestly, even Windows has better video editing programs than linux does (though, you cannot beat iMovie 6 and final cut).

First, some backstory:
I was given an old (Gateway Solo 5350) laptop from a guy in my Ham Club (Amateur Radio).
It ran XP for about 2 of me owning it, then I installed antivirus, which bricked the machine.
So, I installed linux. I fooled around for a few months until I decided I liked Debian best.
Then, I broke that machine and aquired two IBM thinkpads. though, technically, one is a Lenovo thinkpad. I have Debian Lenny installed on both of them as of this post.

Enough backstory.

So, I recently remembered that I ought to check the district's website for information on getting the interblag. Much cheaper than my original plan of one of those interblag-anywhere cards (and I don't have to deal with driver problems). I do all the necessary stuff, and, once I get a thing from gnome network manager saying "you're connected" I open up a browser window, to celebrate the glory of being able to tell lying teachers "you're wrong" and then show them proof of why.
Imagine my disappointment when I get redirected to a page telling me I have to provide credentials again. Which directs me to another page telling me I need to download "Cisco Clean Access Agent". This is not a problem with my computer, because, I know for a fact that my computer identifies as a Linux machine (You can check this by taking your IP address, and entering it into your browser).
Right, so, I download this abomination because I need the interblag. Thinking maybe wine will run it.
Nope.
Wine installed it, and, it doesn't run.

Now for another story.

People, ESPECIALLY teenagers who grew up playing games on Windows, need to learn that the command line DOES NOT mean that I am hacking. Secondly, they need to learn the definition of hacking. These... dumbasses, think that hacking refers to what you'd find on this site as opposed to this site (Protip: the latter actually deals with the real definition of hacking, the former deals with the definition of cracking).
I used to enjoy their stupidity, I would just spend about 15 minutes cd-ing around, just waiting for them to realize that I'm not doing anything at all.
Now, I am getting incredibly tired having to tell them that I'm not doing anything.
Normal people would tell me "spend less time in the command line", my response is "but it's faster to type 'nano ********/chem/chapter6/chapter6-2.txt' than it is to go through the gui to it." (note: ******** is the name of my school, it's not that length of characters, by the way)
Also, I can honestly say that I have never cracked anything in my life, so people saying "4r3 j00 d01ng 50m3 1337 h4xx0r5?" [translation: "Are you doing some leet hacking?" (No, that's not what they're saying, but, for their level of education in this topic, they might as well be saying that, numbers and all)], my answer is "no, go fuck off". Sadly, they never do.

I shall end that block of text.

Another complaint:
When I am programming, I am not creating an exploit, mostly, when I program in school it's because I realized that I can write this program to do this and it'll my academic life easier. For example, I'm working on a program to do these damned word searches for me. Because I am fucking tired of busy work, and these are the one kinds of busy work I suck at.

Pretty much, I expect to do an entire series of these posts as I do my Linux edutainment stuff.

Black Friday sucks.

Honestly. A 34 year old worker at Wal Mart DIED today. That's sad, you know? I mean, I'm all for capitalism and stuff, I don't see a problem with death, so long as it's not senseless death (I do, after all, play a black deck in Magic: The Gathering). But, people were so greedy for these sales that they managed to trample this worker to death.

Not much I can do about it though. Sucks.

Also, the video is in a bit of a lighter tone, it's purpose is just to get me subscribers, even if it does touch a bit on the death of the wal mart worker.

California Proposition 8 (2008)

For those who don't know, CA's Proposition 8 is the banning of Gay Marriage in CA. Legallized in June, 2008, Gay marriage, is, in my opinion, good. I have no religious qualms with it (I'm atheist), I have no other moral qualms with it, other than the following.

I do not think it should be legal for the judicial system to create law.

Why is that a problem? Easy, you see, the CA family code, had, since 2000, a law, stating that only marriage between a man and a woman are legal in CA. The law that put this in, CA Proposition 22 (wikipedia.org, it has sources, which check out, therefore it's ok in my opinion). Unfortunately, this was overturned by the CA supreme court in June 2008. Something I do not think should be legal.

Why shouldn't a court be allowed to overturn a law made 8 years previous? Because, at this point, it is not overturning a law (having expired the time for appeals to be made) it's creating new legislation. Creating legislation is something the LEGISLATIVE branch does, not the JUDICIAL branch. If the JUDICIAL branch is allowed to create LEGISLATION, then this is a breach of separation of powers, which, if not disallowed by the CA constitution, is definitely banned by the US constitution.

I therefore, am left in the gray area. You see, I do not think gay marriage should be banned, my best friend is gay, and I believe he should have the same rights as me. However, I also think that separation of powers should be maintained.

What are your thoughts?

As most people on the internet are aware of the reasons for voting no on prop 8 I didn't elaborate on them, I just stated why I may (if I could vote, damned age 16) vote yes on prop 8, for moral reasons, not homophobia reasons.

Oh, and this will probably be my only political posting. If there are others, expect them to come in at least a year from now. As a republican who lives in democrat country, I don't like to discuss politics because it just ends in me getting insulted.

Also, for film stuff (hey, this blog IS about film, right?), I am working on the screenplay for a film, so I should be done and ready for production once band ends/winter starts/Tung comes back up here.

Another film thing, Tung did DP (Director of Photography) for Campus Movie Fest down at UCLA, he didn't win, but here is a link to the video his roommates made. (requires quicktime 7)

Instead of doing sporadic stuff that doesn't help my audience (right now at 26 subscribers on youtube), I'm going to post at least one video a week. Most of them will be vlogs, but I think it'll help me, a lot.

that said, because it's marching band season, I actually get a lot of videos recorded, because I have a lot to go to and do. Most of them are marching band related and those not interested aren't going to be very entertained, but hey.

So, I finished a screenplay for the halloween film, which might not happen because my schedule is packed (Pretty much unless I can convince the people managing Haunted Mansion to let me film in there, the halloween film might not happen).

This leads me to the haunted mansion. Haunted Mansion is an event put on by my school's performing arts department in which we create a haunted house thing in our cafeteria. It's a ton of fun, because it allows us to be creative, and to construct things just because they would be cool or scary to have. I absolutely love it.

Moving on.

I take the PSAT tomorrow. Which is cool, because getting money for college is great, and it's practice for the SAT, which I take in the spring.

Oh, sidenote: I found out today that if I get a 4.0 gpa for the next 2 years, my end (cumulative) gpa for my entire high school year will be about 3.55.

yeah, time to work my ass off for college.

right, so, pretty much means I'm suspending work on other film projects, to produce a short (less than 2 minutes of film time) film. and this is a call for actors. I have no idea what inspires me, at all. honestly, if I knew, I would be the happiest guy on the planet.

So, I was inspired today, I have an amazing (at least, it seems that way to me) idea for a possible screenplay for the winter 2008 film.

This is a romantic comedy, the theme is one needs to work hard to get ahead in life. I have an idea for one of the characters in it, which, I'll not state yet, because I need something for my next entry.

so, that's pretty much it, y'all get a genre, and a theme today, I'll write soon, hopefully, if band allows it (we have a competition this weekend, and I'll have my camera with me, so expect footage from that to appear on youtube within a week or two after cupertino).

Oh, and, for those interested in my personal life, I got a girlfriend the other day, she may or may not appear in a video in the near future.

if you don't use rss, you can stop reading now, it's ok, because I'm not going to explain something you can just wikipedia.

and yes, that is my attitude in real life. Just talk to my nonexistant friends.

right, so, at first glance, this is a great feature, right? well, not exactly, and I have two reasons why.

people who'll be away from the internet for a while.
tied to a browser vs. separate application

1. people who'll be away from the internet.

like me. I need to leave the internet for long periods of time for school stuff (I don't have the wireless key for my school's wireless), because of the inherent nature of most feed readers (the separate application kinds), they only download text, because otherwise that's WAY too much data to store. Therefore, any video I would have downloaded to watch while offline won't be downloaded. However, if you're perma-connected to the internet, this isn't a problem, but for road warriors, and high school students, this sucks immensely.

2. tied to browser vs. separate application.

I personally use a separate application liferea, to handle my feed reading. Because firefox, at least, doesn't actually download the information, it just references it when you boot it up, therefore using firefox (or any browser that I've tried) for it is stupid.

there are some mail clients that double as feed readers. such as Apple's Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird. I don't know about Mail, but Thunderbird works the same way as firefox, therefore it's a no on that as well.

Pretty much. besides, by the time we would discover revenues, the main reason for using feed readers - so that we don't have to remember the url of the website - is wasted on us because we're subscribed to everyone we would have rss'ed anyway, and we visit youtube enough that we remember the url very easily.

Therefore, rss for youtube sucks.

Will Video for Food unofficial spokesperson

So, in a Will Video for Food blog post today, the concept of paying the other youtubers in your collaboration video (if you're a partner) is discussed, because currently the only model is that your subsciber base is increased.

Also discussed is the idea that having a sponsorship is great, and being the spokesperson for something is great. (read comment #3).

of course, being a spokesperson for something does not directly mean that you are getting paid by the company to be a spokesperson for them, as defined by dictionary.com

Therefore, I could, theoretically declare myself to be a spokesperson, for, say, Will Video for Food. Now, this does not necessarily mean that I get paid by Nalts (owner/writer for Will Video for Food), and it does not mean I have more viewers than he does.

However, it does mean that I just have to speak for Will Video for Food.

I've spent the past few weeks doing various editing... and school, but I prefer to talk about the editing, for the school stuff, go here. Such as editing a presentation I filmed back in early July... that's supposed to be done tomorrow.

I'm also working on Ash, version 4 and 5. and 5 because I'm still deciding whether or not I'm happy with 4.

I said when I released Ash, V. 2 that I would do a deleted scenes video eventually. Yeah, between school, band, and studying (worrying) about the SAT, it's not going to happen until after the winter film... if the winter film happens.

Yeah, so, every other year, my family goes to Louisiana for christmas. Unfortunately, this year we're going... supposedly. That supposedly means there's a chance we might not go, which is what I'm hoping for because I want to do this film, and I kinda like staying here in CA for the winter.

Well, that's pretty much it for now. Off to finish my homework.

As posted on my deviantart page, I released the characterization for one of the characters (of three), which is as follows:

C, gender: female.
Incredibly intelligent, social failure, (basically a female geek). Hates B, is exact opposite of B (in the characterization sense). A's best friend. harbors secret attraction to A.

note that this intentionally leaves out what makes C the character she is.

Have fun figuring out stuff like the storyline or whatever.

Winter 2008 Outline.

The Winter 2008 film for In Debt Productions has been in pre-production for quite a while, since about the last week of July.

However, I only really started working on it for the past three days or so.

Now, I am proud to announce, the first draft of the outline is finished. This winters film will be another romantic comedy, no idea it was going to be that way when I first started out, it just became one.

For reasons of "I don't want people to steal the idea" because this film is very much still in preproduction, I'm not going to post the outline just yet, sorry.

If you can understand html, then you would not need me to tell you that we are done filming.

We filmed scene 5 today, it's already reviewed, and I'm currently taking a break from editing it to write this entry.

Yes, so, now we are in the "post-production" phase of creating a film. This is the phase where we edit, find distributors (currently talking with people from the Youtube Screening Room to see if a minor can submit a film, and hope to get accepted) and show a preview of the film. I'm not going to release a preview of this online, mainly because there is no point in showing a preview, then showing the exact same thing again, only relabeled as the finished version.

Scheduled release date is Tuesday, August Twelve. Uploading to Youtube will start at about midnight, Pacific time, and upload to Deviantart will start around 11:30 pm the previous night. Unless it exceeds 10 minutes (which it shouldn't, I mean, it's at 8:15 w/o scene 5, and scene five should not be any longer than a minute, minute and a half long) in which case, the youtube version will be in two, 5 minute parts.

what you do for sound.

When you don't film double system (separate audio and video) and you need a sound effect that you're too lazy to get off the internet, you kinda have to do stuff you normally wouldn't do to get that sound effect.

for example, for scene 3 (filmed and edited today) we needed the sound of a toilet flushing. therefore, we pointed both our camera and microphone at the toilet to get that sound, you can watch that fun here.

yeah, we're not ashamed. We also filmed for 3 or 4 minutes straight just to get the sound effect of toast popping up from the toaster.

general filming tips.

Ok, blogging right before I go to film. This is not going to be an update blog... well, it's going to kinda be an update blog, but it's also going to have more interesting things than that.

I find that lists help, here's one of the scenes I've filmed, edited, and put together, though not having scored:
scene 1
scene 2
scene 4
scene 9

I've also filmed the introduction stuff, though I've been lazy and have not edited that.

So. Now for some tips.

1. I've found that it helps to edit as much as you can, when you can do it. For example, I have all of what we've filmed sitting on either my mac (that's tip #2, but I'll save that for later) or my hard drive. I've edited most of what we shot within a week of shooting it. I mainly do this because my sleep cycle is messed up and I need something to do at 4 in the morning.
however. I also do this because it indeed does help to have editing done as soon as you can. it helps with shooting future scenes, reshooting parts of a scene, and a bunch of other stuff.

2. When you edit video, use a mac. the best video editing software is on a mac. that and you don't have to worry about viri (plural of virus). There's many other reasons to get a mac, but I'm not going to post them all because I have other stuff to do than troll on why mac is better.

3. make a list of everything you need to bring with you to a shoot. I don't have one of those, and I have left at least one thing at home every day we've shot so far. It's fine when it's something like extra chalk or whatever, but when you forget a mic boom... or tapes, life sucks.

Ok, so. I just finished editing scene 9, and sending it off to Andy to be scored.

I got the score for scenes 1, 2 and 4 today, which works well, already put it with those.

yay, things on schedule, I like that.

so, tips on getting your video scored by someone who's not you.

1. make sure you share your vision with the one scoring your video (tell them what you want to happen)
2. make sure that they tell you where the music starts in the video.
3. make sure they have a good taste in music.

all of which I remembered in the making of Ash.. maybe.

I lied. I forgot about the sharing vision part.

So, today we refilmed scene 9, all of it. leaving us with only most of scene 5, and all of scene 3 to do. Which is good, considering that we only have about 2 filming days left.

Other stuff I've done:
imported all the footage of scene 9, to be edited together tomorrow after a band leadership meeting (gah, waste of filming time!).
imported what's been shot so far of scene 5.
put scenes 1, 2 and 4 together on a single file, sent off to be scored by Apsterling.

and that's it.

So, I have good news, semi-good news, and bad news.

bad news first:
scene 2.5 is useless. The tape I used had a problem with overwriting what was on it previously. I'm guessing it's a problem with the fact that the tape is 6 months old, and, as a precaution, I'm not using any of those old tapes again, and I am going out to buy new tapes.

semi-good news:
so, we shot the introduction scene today, which, is here, but that link will die... probably tomorrow. I'll remove it when it does die. what makes this semi good is the fact that the first minute of what we shot is unusable, for the kinda-same reason as what makes 2.5 useless (though it gets better, which leads me to believe that it was a problem converting widescreen (16 x 9) (which is shot by my first camcorder) to regular 4:3 (which is shot by the camera I'm using to shoot). however, the rest of that footage is good, which brings me to the good news,

good news:
so, first good news, we have the band room introductory scene done, I'm nixing 2.5 because we don't have time to shoot it anymore (I want the last half of next week, week of 8/4 to 8/8, for editing/preview so I can show it at band camp), oh, and we decided to reshoot all of scene 9 (the finale, no, there isn't a scene 6-8). So, here is a list of what we've shot:

now to go update the schedule on DA to show what currently is going to happen.

so, I've been busy these past few days, otherwise I would've updated.

I spent monday night (all of it) going through my tapes looking for scene 3. I did not find it. therefore, we are going to have to reshoot that scene.

also, I think the camcorder I use to import video is having tape problems. tape problems that I hope do not affect the tape, but the camcorder I use to film sucks for playback (read import), so I'm kinda stuck up a creek on this.

and tuesday, I meant to write an entry but I fell asleep, and woke up at 12:30 AM wednesday.
