Independent Superhero Spotlight - The Magdalena

Who is The Magdalena? And why is she awesome?

Well first off - she's kills vampires! And she also deals with other supernatural phenomenon! Plus she's a sexy, strong, independent super heroine!

She is a descendant of Mary Magdalene. For those of you who don't know Christian history

I'll give you a quick lowdown. She was a sinner that was offered redemption by Jesus and followed Jesus to be like a female disciple. She was the first to see and talk to Jesus after Jesus' Resurrection. She was a strong independent female that was quite unheard of in those days.

So according to "The Magdalena" #1, all of the descendants of Mary Magdalene had special abilities that allowed them to reveal the sins of one's past so they could be offered redemption as Mary Magdalene did. Each of the descendants took the name "The Magdalena" and served the Church and the Vatican.

One of "The Magdalena"s removed Lucifer from Hitler which caused Hitler to repent of his sins but, feeling unworthy of Heaven, Hitler committed suicide.

The modern day Magdalena is a nun by the name of Sister Rosalia. She is an awesome detective and a freakin' sweet fighter! She stabs a vampire in the chest and heart, but unfortunately the vampire was not alone. The first issue ends in a cliffhanger.

She reminds me of The Huntress from Batman with a mix of Azrael. She is totally awesome and unique at the same time!

Independent Superhero Spotlight - Jack Kraken

What’s awesome about the independent superhero Jack Kraken? Well first off, he looks like he can kick your can from here to the center of the Earth and back! Second off, he’s got some crazy cool abilities!

See those crazy fingers he’s got swirling around? Both his whole arms and legs can do that! That can stretch swirl, and the like! He’s also got low level pre-cognition due to his condition which means he can dodge your attacks with ease!

He’s also extremely mysterious. Where did his powers come from? What does he look like under that mask? What did two little kids mean when they said he was “supposed to be dead”? All questions that make him even more awesome!

Jack Kraken works for an organization called H.I.M which stands for Humanoid Interaction Management. They deal with creatures like “Nocturnes” “Greys” and “Titans” as well as humans. Jack Kraken’s mission in his first appearance is to save a little Romanian girl “nocturne” from some “Greys” which bend light around them to make them seem like ghosts. Jack Kraken also saves two humans children along the way!

The story also has a good lesson about children! As Jack Kraken says, “That’s the cool things about kids, right? They don’t care what color or species you come from. As long as you can pass the Barbie, they’re cool with you.” I couldn’t of said it better myself.

Oh yeah… and Jack Kraken is a bit of a “speciest” or “racist”. At one point he calls “Greys” ghosts to which his sidekick, a young techie girl named Charlie, simply yells “Jack! Racist!” making Jack apologize.

Want to check out the independent superhero Jack Kraken’s awesome adventure? Check out Action Double Feature #1! It’s only $0.99 and it comes with another comic featuring another awesome independent superhero named “The Answer!”

Importance of Independent Superhero Comics

Why should you read independent comics? Why would you spend money on a comic that is unknown?

Because independent comics are created by you and me. Independent comics are not big name companies that are going after your money! Independent comics are instead very grateful if they can get your money! It's not easy for small guys like you or me to follow our dreams. Especially if we aren't born into Stan Lee's family or went to college with Scott Snyder!

I wish I could tell you right now that, if you wanted, you could create a self published independent comic book that's awesome and make loads of money! Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is that no matter how good it is, it won't make enough to even think of competing with DC's New 52 or Marvel.

We can change this!

Did you recently drop a Marvel or DC title? Maybe you stopped reading Ultimate Spider-Man when Peter Parker died or you found out Huntress is being cancelled and you don't want to pick up Worlds' Finest or Earth 2. Why not, instead of picking up another DC or Marvel title, you pick up one indie comic? If all of us pick up just one independent comic we can easily start helping the guys and girls that put all of their hope, sweat, and tears into their dream. And one day we can follow our dreams and expect the same support!

Buying an independent comic is supporting a dream. Buying a Marvel or DC comic is supporting Marvel and DC.

I'm not saying to stop, drop, and leave mainstream comics. I support DC and Marvel, but I will also be supporting an indie comic. And who knows? If I get some more money I may support a few more indie comics!

If you don't like the direction of any big name comics then why not drop it for a really good independent comic?

Comic fans, we need to make sure that good creators can break into the field with their own comics. We need to realize that there are some awesome heroes in the mainstream and the indie worlds! We need to change ourselves before we can change the world for the better! Want to make an independent comic? Support another independent comic and soon indie comics can become the wave of the future! We can one day see team ups of Batman and an independent superhero or X-Men and a group of independent superheroes!

We can do it because we have the power of where we spend our money! We can support dreams and follow dreams of our own! I ask and challenge you to pick up one independent comic, just one, and know that it's for a good cause. A cause you may be or may become a part of!
