Ethan Wilder got the Dogs on the board first in the top of the third inning when he drove in his fellow All-Star Gio DiGiacomo with an RBI double. Jose Sermo answered for the RedHawks with a two-run home run in the fourth to give Fargo-Moorhead a 2-1 lead. A wild pitch followed by an error allowed the RedHawks to extend their lead to three in the bottom of the fifth. Sermo homered once again in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-1, his sixth home run of the series.

Chicago’s offense caught fire in the top of the seventh. Tyreque Reed started the inning when he drove in DiGiacomo with an RBI fielder’s choice. Wilder followed with an RBI groundout to score Daniel Harris and cut the lead to three. All-Star catcher Jaxx Groshans continued the inning with an RBI infield single that scored Derek Maiben. He was followed by Jacob Maiben, who cut the lead to one after drawing a walk with the bases loaded. Rookie Zack Stokes gave Chicago a 7-6 lead with a two-run single that scored Groshans and Chance Sisco. The seven-run seventh inning was capped off by a wild pitch that allowed the Dogs to take an 8-6 lead.

Sisco made the score 9-6 in the top of the ninth with a solo home run and the Dogs went on to avoid the sweep in Fargo. Rookie Donny Tober earned the win for Chicago. This marks the first win of his professional career.

The Dogs will return home where they will take on the Kane County Cougars on Monday, July 20. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

Fargo exploded offensively in the first two innings. Five hits and a balk in the first inning scored six runs for the RedHawks. Fargo-Moorhead drove in nine more runs in the second inning. The inning was capped off by a three-run home run by Jose Sermo to make it 15-0 heading into the third.

Chicago got on the board in the top of the fourth when Tyreque Reed’s RBI groundout scored Jaxx Groshans. After the RedHawks responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, Zack Stokes drove in Chance Sisco with an RBI single to cut the lead to 17 in the top of the sixth. Ethan Wilder followed with an RBI single to score Jonathan Soto. CJ Cepicky continued the strong sixth inning for the Dogs with a bases loaded triple to make the score 19-6.

Chicago continued to battle, driving in five runs in the top of the eighth to make the score 19-11. The late rally would not be enough, as Fargo-Moorhead took the first game of the series 20-11.

The Dogs will look to even the series on Saturday, July 18. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

After a scoreless first inning, Fargo-Moorhead scored first with a solo home run by Jairus Richards in the bottom of the second. The RedHawks offense got hot in the bottom of the third with five hits and four runs to make it 5-0 heading into the fourth. Fargo-Moorhead went on to drive in four runs in the fourth followed by three more in the fifth to put them up 12-0.

An RBI groundout by Derek Maiben in the top of the sixth scored Jonathan Soto for Chicago’s first run of the game. Jose Sermo answered in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run, his third of the game.

Chicago continued to fight in the top of the ninth when All-Star Ethan Wilder drove in Jacob Maiben and Tyreque Reed with a three-run home run. It would not be nearly enough, however, as Fargo-Moorhead took the second game of the series 13-4.

The Dogs will look to avoid the sweep against the RedHawks on Sunday, July 19. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
