The Western Kshatrapas, or Western Satraps, (35-405 CE) were Saka rulers of the western and central part of India (Saurashtra and Malwa: modern Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh states). They were contemporaneous with the Kushans who ruled the northern part of the Indian subcontinent, and the Satavahana (Andhra) who ruled in Central India.

British India Error Coins (Brockage)

Brockage—A mirror image of the design impressed on the opposite side of the same coin. These errors are caused when a struck coin remains on either die after striking, and impresses its image into the next blank planchet as it is struck, leaving a negative or mirror image. Off-center and partial Brockage coins are worth less than those with full impression. Coins with negative impressions on both sides are usually mutilated pieces made outside the mint by the pressing together of coins.

Below are the coins, which I found from one of my dealer. So thought of sharing it. There is no concrete proof wither this coins are fake are not. Has it’s a error coin its very difficult to prove it. I have taken some opinion from experience coin collectors, most of the opinion is it’s a fake or replica, but when asked about the details of original and their availability, answer are not concrete. Kindly share me if you find any of the proof or records about it.

RBI has launched Ten rupees bi-metal coins for circulation, but it is hard to find it, all the Ten rupees coin are with coins collectors. The first ever ten rupee bi-metal coin dated 2005 with the theme Unity in Diversity and the latest one with new rupee symbol dated 2011.

RBI also issued commemorative coins in ten rupee bi metal for circulations, namely, Homi Bhabha & RBI platinum jublee

RBI also introduces a UNC set for coins collectors Ter-centenary of gur-ta-gaddi of shri guru granth sahib.

RUPEE COINS WITH OFFICIAL RUPEE SYMBOL RELEASED

8th July 2011 will be marked as a historic date on which the release of the first set of Indian Rupee coins with the all famous Rupee Symbol will take place. The new series of coins have been introduced with features at the edge, which make it convenient for easy recognition and distinction.
In a statement, the Finance Ministry said the security edging of new series of coins would be good for better recognition by visually challenged persons and will have improved counterfeit resistance.
Last year the government had approved a symbol for the rupee that elegantly combines Devanagiri and Roman scripts to signify the rising strength, ambition and spread of the country’s currency in a fast globalizing economy.

The rupee, introduced as a silver coin for transactions by emperor Sher Shah Suri, who built the Grand Trunk road in the 16th century, was till two decades ago largely unrecognized in global markets. But now, the Indian Rupee Symbol joins the elite club of symbol-endowed a national currency that includes only 4 other currencies – US dollar, the British pound, the euro and the Japanese yen.
The symbol designed by D Udaya Kumar, who has just joined the faculty of the department of design at IIT Guwahati, was selected from more than 3,000 entries that were evaluated by a jury of experts, government and RBI officials.
As on date, approximately 100 million coins of all denominations have been minted.

During my recent observation, commemorative coins demand has gone high. Commemorative coins of India has significant role in Indian coins collectors and numismatics.

What is commemorative coins?
Commemorative coins of India are usually issued to celebrate some special occasion or to mark a special event. They also have been issued as a mark of respect towards some distinguished individuals or monument.

MADRAS PRESIDENCY ARCAT NAWAB COINS

Madras Presidency, also known as Madras Province and known officially as Presidency of Fort St. George, was a province of British India with capital at Madras ( now known as Chennai) and included many parts of south India :-

* Tamilnadu

* Kerala : Malabar region

* Lakshadweep

* Andhra Pradesh : Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema

* Karnataka : Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Bellary districts

After India's independence in 1947, Madras Presidency was reconstituted as Madras State. In 1953 the Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra regions became the new state of Andhra, and Bellary district became part of Mysore State . In 1956, South Kanara district was transferred to Mysore, the Malabar Coast districts became part of the new state of Kerala , and Madras state, renamed Tamilnadu in 1968 , took its present shape. The northern district of Madras presidency, Ganjam, was transferred to Orissa

The earliest coins of the company in Madras were small silver pieces issued from their factory at Fort St. George in about 1670's. These coins were undated with two interlinked C's on the reverse (assigned to the reign of King Charles II).

During the 18th century silver coins were minted bearing the Company's bale mark(an orb and a cross) inscribed C.C.E (Charter Company of England) and in some cases G.C.E (Governor and company of merchants trading into the east Indies). All these issues were meant for use within the company's factory and surrounding areas and also for exchange with European traders. They were not meant for circulation in the interior of the country.

In 1742 company obtained permission from Nawab Sadatulla Khan of the Subah of Arcot to coin rupees in imitation of those struck at the imperial mint at Arcat. These coins were poorly struck with dies bigger than the blanks used. Hence, only a part of inscriptions are generally visible. They bear the name of Alamgir II with Sixth year of reign and have a 'lotus - mint mark'. This undated series continued for about 50 years. Subsequent issues had Hegira Date '1172' equivalent to 1758 A.D. irrespective of the year of minting. The R.Y-6 also appears on all issues.

ONE FANAM SILVER (VISHNU FANAM) COIN

In 1807 new machinery was introduced and mint produced 2 silver coin in European style with oblique milling. One series based on Hindu standard consisted of One and Two pagoda in gold, Half and Quarter pagoda and Fanams in silver. The copper coins consisted on Cash denominations.

The other series based on moghul standard were gold mohurs and fractions of mohurs : ¼, ⅓ and ½ . They issued rupees together with fractions down to ⅛ and ¹⁄₁₆ rupee in silver. Madras also issued 2 rupees coins. Although minted in 1807 and later all bear the frozen date "1172"A.H.
Copper coins in this series were Faluce(Dub) with inscriptions in persian on one side and Tamil and Telugu inscriptions on the other side indicating the value in Dub units.
In Madras, there were copper coins for 2, 4 pies, 1, 2 and 4 paisa, with the first two denominated as ½ and 1 dub or ¹⁄₉₆ and ¹⁄₄₈ rupee. Madras also issued the Madras Fanam until 1815.

Although the two systems of coins were in circulation at the same time but they were unrelated.

3360 Cash = 42 Fanams = 1 Pagoda =31/2 Rupees = 168 Faluce (Dub)

1 Rupee = 48 Faluce (Dub)

1 Faluce (Dub) = 20 Cash; 1 Fanam = 4 Faluce(Dub) = 80 Cash

After 1818, Rupee was made the standard coin and the weight was fixed at 180 grains with smaller pieces in proportion. The pagodas and fanams were demonetized from that year.

Next issues were :-

1. 1812-1835 : Struck at Madras Mint with 'Lotus' mint mark and indented cord milling.

2. 1823-1825 : Struck at Calcutta with 'Rose' mint mark and upright milling.

3. 1830-1835 : Struck at Calcutta with 'Rose' mint mark and upright milling but with a small crescent added on the reverse (rupee and half rupee coins) and on obverse(1/4 rupee coins).

PORTUGUESE INDIA COINS

The Portuguese were the first people who thought to establish their territorial dominion in India. After obtaining the approval letter from the Zamorin, the Raja of Calicut, the trade between India and Portugal began. Establishing the trade and commercial relation with India had given rise to the thought of establishing their supremacy in the eastern seas. With the indulgence of political intrigues in the Indian states, the Portuguese succeeded in establishing their settlements at Diu, Daman, Salsette, Bassein, Chaul and Bombay on the west coast, San Thome near Madras and Hooghly in Bengal. They also extended their authority over the major part of Ceylon. Later due the Portuguese lost most of their territories and by the end of the eighteenth century only Diu, Daman and Goa were in their dominion.

DUTCH UNITED EAST INDIA COMPANY COINS

The history of Dutch coins in India it depicts that in a span of five years no less than sixty five Dutch vessels sailed to Indies. The private companies for trade with the East were formed in many parts of Holland but soon they were amalgamated by the State General into the United East India Company. The Company obtained in India a factory at Pulicat in 1609 and in 1616 they established themselves at Surat. Between 1661 and 1664 hey wrested from the Portuguese all their settlements on the pepper bearing coast of Malabar. By 1664, they possessed factories at Masulipattam and other places on the Coromandal coast at Hoogly, Cossimbazar and Dacca in Bengal, at Patna in Bihar, and at Surat, Ahmedabad and Agra in northern India, besides the seven stations in Malabar. Thus the Dutch had obtained a stronghold over Indian trade as far as the European market was concerned.

An extensive series of coins were struck for general circulation in the east by the Dutch East India Company at mints in their homeland itself. The provincial mints of Holland, Utrecht, Zeeland, Gelderland and Overysesel issued `Ducatoons` and these coins were popularly known as `silver riders`. The obverse side of the coins bore a cuirassier on horseback and the provincial monogram below with an inscription. The coins of the other provincial mints had the names of the State-General supported by two lions and below it there was the monogram `VOC` in an ornamental frame that represent the Company. Above the crown of the arm the date was etched and this side also includes an inscription.

Apart from issuing `Ducatoons`, three `Guilder`, one `Guilder` and half `Guilder` in silver were issued by four of the provinces. These coins were issued for the use of the Company. These coins contained the standing Pallas (later known as Neerlandia), the date and an inscription. The other side of the coin bore the arms of the State-General, the value, the monogram of the Company and an inscription followed by the name of the issuing province in an abbreviated form. In 1726, copper `Doits` were also issued for the company and half `Doits` in 1749.these coins contained the crowned shield of the issuing province on one side and the `VOC` monogram of the company on the other. In India these coins were current on the Coromandal coast and in Cochin.

INDIA PORTUGUESE NOTES YEAR 1945

India had extensive links with the Hellenic and Roman civilisations between the 4th century BC and the 4th Century AD. Alexander's invasion of the Punjab gave rise to the Hellenic links and very considerable maritime trade established links with the Roman Empire. Renewed contact with the West began with the arrival of the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama at Calicut in 1498. Francisco de Almeda and Afonso de Albuquerque helped establish and consolidate Portuguese power in India and the East. The territory of Goa in western India was seized in 1510. The Portuguese enjoyed virtual monopoly of trade with India for more than a century till the arrival of the Dutch and the English. They, however, retained the territories of Goa, Daman and Diu till 1961. The first Indo-Portuguese issues of paper currency were the 'Rupia' denominated notes put into circulation around 1883. These notes incorporated the portrait of the King of Portugal. These were issued in denominations of 5,10,20,50,100 and 500. In 1906, 'Banco Nacional Ultramarino' was entrusted with the responsibility of issue of paper money in India for the Portuguese held territories. The early notes issued by the bank carried the seal of the bank. New denominations of 4 Tangas, 8 Tangas and One Rupia and 21/2 Rupias were introduced in 1917. Most issues carried the Commerce and Sailing Ships motifs common to many colonial issues. Indian symbols and motifs (architectural and exotic fauna) were adopted on some notes. Later notes carried the portrait of Afonso De Albuquerque. The monetary system in vogue in Goa consisted of the Reis, the Tanga and the Rupia with one Rupia consisting of 16 Tangas. In 1959, the denominational unit was changed from Rupia to Escudos with one Escudo consisting of 100 Cent avos. New notes with the denominations of 30, 60, 100, 300, 600 and 1000 were introduced. These remained in circulation till 1961. When Goa was annexed to the Indian Union, these notes were replaced by Indian currency.

EAST INDIA COMPANY COINS

On the last day of 1600AD the company of the Merchants of London trading into East Indies, got the royal charter from Queen Elizabeth to monopoly for trade for 15 years. In 1608 AD the English company made its first attempt to establish a factory in India. But in 1618 East India Company got permission to establish a permanent factory at Surat and gradually in later years, it established factories at different parts of India. These East India Company traders gradually got involved in local politics and ultimately succeeded in becoming the rulers of India. Thus whole of India was under their control by 1834 AD. In 1857 AD the Indian People revolted against East India Company’s rule. It resulted in transfer of power from East India Company to British Monarchy. This rule resulted in the end of East India Company in India. The struggle for Independence continued by people of India till they succeeded in 1947 AD, when India got independence from British rule.

COINAGE DURING EAST INDIA COMPANY RULE

1) In the very early stages the EAST INDIA COMPANY imported special coins from England for the use in their factory and trades with other European Companies.

2) Later, EAST INDIA COMPANY got royal permission to mint their coins locally with English inscription for the local use of these coins with the people near by factories East India Company.

3) For the company’s trade, far away from their factories they got the coins minted by Moghul Emperors. These coins were in Moghul style with Persian inscriptions. They were minted at Moghul mints from the bullion supplied by East India Company.

4) From 1716 AD to 1835 AD as the EAST INDIA COMPANY became politically strong, they minted their own coins in EAST INDIA COMPANY mints, but in Moghul style. Those EAST INDIA COMPANY coins were almost similar to Moghul coins. The borderline to separate EAST INDIA COMPANY coins or distinguish them from Moghul coins is blurred and hence difficult.

5 )From 1835 AD uniform coinage in European style, with the effigy of British monarch, replacing the Moghul emperor’s name were issued

6)From 1862 to 1947 AD coins were continued to issued with effigy of succeeding British Monarchs, till India got independence in 1947 AD

Madras Presidency Coins

Madras, also known as Fort St George, was founded in 1640. It was the first territorial acquired by East India Company and it was the oldest among all the three presidencies (Madras, Bombay and Bengal). Madras Presidency was also known as Madraspatinam or Chinapatinam. The company obtained a small piece of land just outside the walls of Fort St George and started building a mint on March 1, 1640.

The Reserve Bank of India was formally inaugurated on Monday, April 1, 1935 with its Central Office at Calcutta. Section 22 of the RBI Act, 1934, empowered it to continue issuing Government of India notes until its own notes were ready for issue. The bank issued the first five rupee note bearing the portrait of George VI in 1938. This was followed by Rs. 10 in February, Rs 100 in March and Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000 in June 1938. The first Reserve Bank issues were signed by the second Governor, Sir James Taylor. In August 1940, the one-rupee note was reintroduced as a wartime measure, as a Government note with the status of a rupee coin. During the war, the Japanese produced high-quality forgeries of the Indian currency. This necessitated a change in the watermark. The profile portrait of George VI was changed to his full frontal portrait. The security thread was introduced for the first time in India. The George VI series continued till 1947 and thereafter as a frozen series till 1950 when post-independence notes were issued.

King George VI One Rupee Silver Coin Year 1940

After the death of King George V his son, who would have been King Edward VIII, abdicated before the coronation. No coins were minted using his portrait. His brother the Duke of York was crowned King George VI in May 1937 and the first coin of India with his effigy was minted in 1938.

Coin collecting is the collecting or trading of coins or other forms of minted legal tender.
Coins of interest to collectors often include those that circulated for only a brief time, coins with mint errors and especially beautiful or historically significant pieces. Coin collecting can be differentiated from numismatics in that the latter is the systematic study of currency. Though closely related, the two disciplines are not necessarily the same. A numismatist may or may not be a coin collector and vice versa.

The motivations for collecting are varied. Possibly the most common type of collector is the hobbyist, who amasses a collection purely for fun with no real expectation of profit. This is especially true of casual collectors and children who collect items on the basis of chance and personal interest.
Another frequent reason for purchasing coins is as an investment. As with stamps, precious metals or other commodities, coin prices are cyclical based on supply and demand. Prices drop for coins that are not in long-term demand, and increase along with a coin's perceived or intrinsic value. Investors buy with the expectation that the value of their purchase will increase over the long term. As with all types of investment, the coin collector do a study before buying. Likewise, as with most collectibles, a coin collection does not produce income until it is sold, and may even incur costs (for example, the cost of safe deposit box storage) in the interim.
