Asiatica Film Mediale - Ice Poison, Midi Z

Today I'm here to write about an indipendent movie screened for the first time in Italy during the Asian movies' festival Asiatica Film Mediale. I'm talking about Ice Poison (Bing Du), the fourth movie by the talented Burmese director Midi Z. This movie had its world premiere at 2014 Berlin International Film Festival and it has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at 2015 Oscars. Midi Z, the gifty director of Ice Poison, was born in Burma in 1982 and later moved to Taiwan for studying and training. This latest movie comes after Return to Burma (2011), Poor Folk (2012) and Taipei Factory (2013), every of which have received nominees and awards in several Film Festivals worldwide.

Here it is the synopsis of the movie, taken directly from Asiatica Film Mediale's website:

A young farmer and his father are barely able to survive on their meagre corn harvest and so they make their way down from the mountains to the village to borrow money from their relatives working in jade mines or on opium plantations.

But missing paperwork, deceit and corruption have left them impoverished too.

Finally, the father pawns his cow for a moped so that his son can earn a living as a taxi driver. His first customer is Sanmei, who has returned to Myanmar to bury her grandfather.

She decides not to go back to China and to get out of an arranged marriage in order to begin a new life with her son in her old country.

When Sanmei accepts a job as a drug runner she persuades the young farmer to be her driver.

And just to have a foretaste of the plot, here is the official trailer of the movie.

I have come accross this amazing movie by chance, because, at the eleventh hour (!!), I was given the pleasure to be his interpreter during my volunteer collaboration with Asiatica Film Mediale.

So, hope you can enjoy the Q&A with the public after the screening of the movie, despite the poor quality of the video (sorry for that!)...

Oggi vorrei scrivere qualcosa a proposito di un film indipendente trasmesso in anteprima per l'Italia ad Asiatica Film Mediale, un festival di cinema asiatico a Roma. Il film in questione è Ice Poison (Bing Du), quarta opera del talentuoso regista birmano Midi Z. Questo film è stato presentato alla prima mondiale al Festival del Cinema Internazionale di Berlino 2014 ed è candidato agli Oscar 2015 nella categoria Miglior Film in Lingua Straniera. Midi Z, il talentuoso regista di Ice Poison, è nato in Birmania nel 1982 e successivamente si è trasferito a Taiwan per studiare e fare pratica nella regia. Questo suo ultimo film segue le altre opere del regista, Return to Burma (2011), Poor Folk (2012) e Taipei Factory (2013), ognuna delle quali ha ricevuto numerose candidature e premi in diversi festival cinematografici in tutto il mondo.

Questa è la sinossi del film, presa direttamente dal sito di Asiatica Film Mediale:

Un giovane contadino e suo padre sopravvivono a malapena con lo scarso raccolto di granturco, decidono quindi di scendere dalle montagne verso il villaggio per chiedere un prestito ai parenti che lavorano nelle miniere di giada o nelle piantagioni d’oppio.

Però la sparizione di documenti, inganno e corruzione hanno impoverito anche loro.

Alla fine, il padre impegna le sue mucche per un motorino in modo che il figlio possa guadagnare come tassista.

Il suo primo cliente è Sanmei, tornata in Birmania per seppellire il nonno.

La ragazza decide di non tornare in Cina e tirarsi fuori da un matrimonio combinato in modo da cominciare una nuova vita con suo fi- glio nel suo vecchio paese.

Quando Sanmei accetta un lavoro come corriere di droga, convince il giovane contadino a farle da autista.

Ho scoperto questo straordinario film per puro caso, perché, all'ultimo minuto (!!), mi è stata offerta l'opportunità di essere la sua interprete durante la mia collaborazione volontaria con Asiatica Film Mediale.

Quindi, spero possa piacervi il Q&A con il pubblico dopo la proiezione del film, nonostante la scarsa qualità del video (mi scuso per questo!).

পহেলা বৈশাখ - Bangla New Year - Capodanno Bengalese

The Bangladeshi community in Rome has just celebrated their New Year in a great and coloured festival that lasted for five days.

Known either as the পহেলা বৈশাখ (pohela boishakh = First of boishakh month) or as নববর্ষ (noboborsho = New Year), the Bengali New Year is celebrated woldwide according to Bengali Calendar, which, as other Southern Asian calendars, commences in mid-April of the Gregorian Year, with Boishakh month as the first.

Traditionally a rural festive occasion because of the link with rice harvest time, during the centuries Bengali New Year has become a great festival held in both rural and urban context. The Bengali New Year starts at dawn and is marked by processions, fairs, folk and traditional music and dance events. People start this auspicious day cleaning their houses and then, dressed in new and fancy traditional clothes, invite relatives and friends as guest to spend the day together eating special dishes and enjoying the event.

In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, New Year is celebrated with massive gatherings and parades, the most famous of which, the Mongol Shobhajatra, is organized by the students of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University. Here and in other big cities, the day is marked by several fairs decicated to every aspect of Bengali culture, from dance to music and from food to handicraft.

As I was saying, this festival is held every year not only in Bangladesh and in the indian state of West Bengal, but also in every country in which Bengali community live. Since Italy is the second European country for Bengali residents after UK, New Year's fair (বৈশাখী মেলা, Boishakhi Mela) is a steady occasion for the Roman Bangladeshi community to celebrate and also to let italian people know their culture and traditions.

This year, from the 1st to the 5th of May, here in Rome Bangladeshi community celebrated their New Year with a great and coloured festival. According to the statistical survey taken by Rome municipality in 2012, the Bangladeshi community is one of the most numerous in the capital, with approximately 19000 legal residents. This Year (1421 according to Bengali calendar) the festival has reached its fifteenth edition and has been organized by many bangladeshi associations, headed by Dhuumcatu, one of the most famous association here in Rome, with nearly 10000 members. It has been held in a public park at Casalbertone, a neighborhood in the eastern part of Rome close to the ones with more bangladeshi residents, namely Prenestina area and Tor Pignattara (known locally as "Bangla Town"). Starting at 8:00 pm, along with several food and handicraft stalls, there has been music and dance performances, together with art exhibition and public meeting and debates about the socio-economic issues of migrants and the improvement of multicultural cohabitation. Other themes have been the promotion of ecological sustainability, the experiences of second generations and proposals about the betterment of the neighborhood (in fact, the very spot of the event has been looked after by Dhuumcatu members, who has cleaned it and prevented illegal activities such as prostitution or drug trafficking to take place).

This event is the proof that multicultural cohabitation is a potential reality which can be gained only by showing the daily life of migrants and by letting italian people know bangladeshi culture and traditions. Unfortunately in Italy still exists a lot of misconceptions (not to say ostility) about migrants, because of unawareness and ignorance and also because of the xenophobical propaganda of many political right-wing parties. So, only through event like this we can learn about other cultures and promote multiculturalism.
I've personally been at the festival with Maria Grazia Priori, a talented photographer whose great photos can be seen here. I really would like to thank her for her contribution, hoping that it will continue for other reports about Bangladeshi and Southern Asian communities that live here in Rome.

Finally, I would like to share a curious fact that I've experienced at the festival. As you can see from the photos, I've met a bangladeshi little girl, Prerona, who did a dance performance at the event. Curiously, Prerona has been one of my students last year, during my internship as a teacher of Italian L2 (Italian as Second Language for foreigners) at her Primary School in Rome. Since among the other apprentices I was the only one who can speak bengali, my university sent me to a Primary School in which there are a lot of bangladeshi students and in fact the majority of my students were bangladeshi children. There I worked with Prerona and her schoolmates and I've met also many bangladeshi parents, helping regular teachers in communicating with them during school/families meeting. I've always been greeted with kindness and respect by both the children and their parents, experiencing the extreme need for multicultural and multilinguistic assistance in public sectors, about which in Italy there is still much to do.
Fortunately, events like the Bengali New Year let me hope for the best in the future!!!

La comunità bangladeshi di Roma ha appena celebrato il suo Capodanno con una festa che è durata cinque giorni.

Conosciuto come পহেলা বৈশাখ (pohela boishakh = primo del mese di Boishakh) o come নববর্ষ (noboborsho = Anno Nuovo), il Capodanno Bengalese è un evento celebrato in tutto il mondo sulla base del calendario bengalese che, come gli altri calendari dell'Asia Meridionale, ha inizio a metà Aprile del calendario Gregoriano, con il Boishakh come primo mese dell'anno.

Tradizionale festività rurale collegata al raccolto del riso, durante i secoli il Capodanno Bengalese è diventato un grande evento che si tiene sia nelle zone rurali che in quelle urbane. Il Capodanno inizia all'alba e la giornata è caratterizzata da processioni, fiere ed eventi di musica e danza folk e tradizionale. La gente dà inizio a questa lieta giornata pulendo a fondo la casa e poi, vestita in abiti tradizionali, invitando parenti e amici per passare la festa insieme mangiando cibi particolari e partecipando all'evento.

A Dhaka, la capitale del Bangladesh, il Nuovo Anno viene celebrato in grandi raduni e parate, la più famosa delle quali, la Mongol Shobhajatra, è organizzata dagli studenti della Facoltà di Arti Figurative dell'Università di Dhaka. Qui e in altre grandi città, la giornata è caratterizzata da numerose fiere dedicate ai vari aspetti della cultura bengalese, dalla danza alla musica e dal cibo all'artigianato.

Come stavo dicendo, questo evento si tiene annualmente non solo in Bangladesh e nello stato indiano del West Bengal, ma anche in ogni paese dove è presente la comunità bengalese. Siccome l'Italia è il secondo paese europeo per numero di bangladeshi dopo la Gran Bretagna, la fiera del Capodanno (বৈশাখী মেলা, Boishaki Mela) è un'occasione consolidata negli anni per la comunità bengalese romana per festeggiare e anche per far conoscere agli italiani la loro cultura e le loro tradizioni.

Quest'anno, dal primo al cinque Maggio, qui a Roma la comunità bangladeshi ha celebrato il Capodanno con un grande e colorato evento. Secondo le statistiche elaborate dal Comune di Roma nel 2012, la comunità bangladeshi è una delle più numerose della capitale, con circa 19000 residenti. Quest'anno (il 1421 secondo il calendario bengalese) il festival ha raggiunto la XV edizione ed è stato organizzato da svariate associazioni bangladeshi, capeggiate da Dhuumcatu, una delle associazioni più famose qui a Roma, con circa 10000 membri. Si è tenuto presso il parchetto di Casalbertone, un quartiere della zona est della città vicino a quelli con la più alta concentrazione di bangladeshi, cioè la Prenestina e Tor Pignattara (conosciuta localmente come “Bangla Town”). A partire dalle 20:00, accanto a numerosi stand di cibi tipici e artigianato, ci sono stati spettacoli di musica e danza, insieme a mostre d'arte e incontri e dibattiti pubblici a proposito delle questioni socio-economiche dei migranti e dello sviluppo della convivenza multiculturale. Altri temi sono stati l'ecosostenibilità, le esperienze delle seconde generazioni e proposte sul miglioramento del quartiere (infatti lo stesso sito dell'evento è stato curato dai membri dell'associazione Dhuumcatu, che l'hanno ripulito e hanno evitato che si verificassero attività illegali come la prostituzione e il traffico di droga).

Questo evento è la dimostrazione che la convivenza multiculturale è una potenziale realtà che può essere pienamente raggiunta solo mostrando la vita quotidiana dei migranti e facendo sì che gli italiani possano conoscere la cultura e le tradizioni bangladeshi. Sfortunatamente, in Italia esistono ancora molti pregiudizi (per non dire aperta ostilità) verso i migranti, a causa dell'ignoranza e anche a causa della propaganda xenofoba di molti partiti di destra. Quindi, è solo attraverso eventi come questo che si può imparare qualcosa di nuovo sulle altre culture e promuovere il multiculturalismo.

Sono personalmente stata al festival insieme a Maria Grazia Priori, una fotografa di talento che ha scattato le foto qui presenti. Colgo l'occasione per ringraziarla per il suo contributo, sperando che la nostra collaborazione possa continuare per altri report sulla comunità bangladeshi o sulle altre dell'Asia Meridionale.

Infine, vorrei condividere un fatto curioso che mi è successo alla festa. Come si può vedere dalle foto, ho incontrato una ragazzina bangladeshi, Prerona, che si era appena esibita in uno spettacolo di danza. Curiosamente, Prerona è stata una dei miei studenti l'anno scorso, durante il mio tirocinio come insegnante di Italiano L2 (Italiano come seconda lingua per stranieri) presso la sua scuola Primaria. Visto che tra i tirocinanti ero l'unica che sapeva parlare bengali, la mia università mi ha mandato in una scuola con molti studenti bangladeshi e infatti la maggioranza dei miei studenti era di origine bengalese. Lì ho lavorato con Prerona e con i suoi compagni e ho anche conosciuto molti genitori bangladeshi, attraverso l'attività di mediazione linguistica e culturale svolta durante i colloqui scuola/famiglie. Sono sempre stata accolta con gentilezza e rispetto sia dai bambini che dai genitori, facendo personale esperienza dell'estremo bisogno di assistenza multiculturale e multilinguistica del settore pubblico, fattore in cui l'Italia ha ancora molta strada da fare.

Fortunatamente, eventi come il Capodanno Bengalese mi fanno ben sperare per il futuro!!!

सूटेड बूटेड तन लिये , व्याकुल मन लिये उन्होंने उन प्रसिद्ध गुरु जी के वातानुकूलित आश्रम के कमरे में प्रवेश किया | गुरु ध्यानमग्न थे , थोड़ी ही देर में उन्होंने आंखें खोलीं | इन्होंने अपनी व्यथा बखान करना शुरू की |
गुरु ने उपदेश देना शुरू किया ,
      " बच्चा तू अपने सब बुरे काम छोड़ दे ( जिसमें सुरा और सुंदरी भी शामिल थे ) पाप मत कर , झूठ मत बोल , किसी को सता मत | "
      " गुरूजी , सब मंज़ूर है | "
      " अब कोई और शका | "
उन्होंने कुछ हिचकिचाते हुए कहा , " नऽऽहीं | "
      " बच्चा | शर्म मत कर | गुरु से क्या छिपाना ! "
      " बात यह है ," उन्होंने सकुचाते हुए कहना शुरू किया , " मेरा विभाग ऐसा है कि दूसरी आमदनी का रोकना बहुत मुश्किल है |

गुरूजी ने आंखें बंद कीं पांच मिनट बाद खोल कर बोले ,
      " ऐसा करना बच्चा !
        उस कमाई का कुछ प्रतिशत हमारे आश्रम में दान कर दिया करना |
        तेरे सब पाप नष्ट हो जायेंगे | "

कहकर गुरु डनलप के आसन पर आंख मूंद फिर ध्यान मग्न हो गये |

A high officer had everything, from a car to an electronic lighter.

Even though, he felt some kind of restlessness that didn't seem to disappear. It seems to him that if he bought something, maybe his soul would be fulfilled ... but then peace of mind came to seek refuge in every stuff he bought. At the end he realized that his soul was looking for spirituality.

Well-dressed (literally: suited booted = dressed in a suit and with boots, tn) and agitated, he went into a room of the air-conditioned ashram of a well-known guru. The guru was deep in meditation and immediately after he opened his eyes. The man started to express his sorrow.

Then the guru began to give his preaching:

"My son, leave all your bad habits (which included women and alcohol), don't sin,

don't lie, don't annoy anyone."

"Guruji, all this is accepted."

"So now [tell me] any other worry."

He said hesitating: "N-n-no."

"My son, don't be ashamed. What's there to hide from your guru!"

"The fact is that" he started to say shyly, "in my department is so difficult to put an end to bribery (literally: the other income, tn). Not taking them will make everyone angry, from the highest official to the lowest ranks. Nowadays even work has become dangerous. I'm in trouble, my lord! Give me any solution."

The guru had his eyes closed and five minutes after having opened them he said:

"Don't act like this, my son!

Donate a percentage of this income to our ashram.

All your sins will be eliminated."

Having said that, the guru came back to sit on his dunlop (british brand known, among the other products, for latex mattress, tn) seat and, having closed his eyes, he fell again in deep meditation.

Un alto ufficiale possedeva tutto, dall'automobile all'accendino elettronico.

Tuttavia aveva un'inquietudine che non voleva andarsene. Gli sembrava che se avesse comprato qualche altra cosa forse la sua anima si sarebbe appagata ... ma poi la pace era andata a rifugiarsi in ognuna di quelle cose. Dopo egli comprese che la sua anima stava cercando la spiritualità.

Vestito di tutto punto (letteralmente: suited booted = con completo e stivali, ndt) e con l'animo afflitto, egli entrò in una stanza dell'eremitaggio con aria condizionata di un famoso maestro. Il maestro era immerso nella meditazione e un attimo dopo aprì gli occhi. Allora l'uomo cominciò a descrivere i motivi della sua sofferenza.

Il maestro iniziò a dispensare i suoi consigli:

" Figliolo, abbandona tutti i malaffari (che comprendevano le donne e l'alcool),

non peccare, non mentire, non infastidire nessuno."

" Maestro, tutto ciò è ben accetto."

" Adesso [esponimi] qualche altro dubbio"

Egli disse esitando: "N-n-no"

"Figliolo, non vergognarti. Cosa c'è da nascondere al tuo maestro!"

"Il fatto è che", egli cominciò a dire timidamente, " nel dipartimento dove lavoro porre fine alle bustarelle (letteralmente: gli altri guadagni, ndt) è molto difficile. Non prenderle farebbe arrabbiare tutti, dalle alte cariche fino ai ranghi inferiori. Oggigiorno perfino il lavoro è diventato pericoloso. Mi trovo in grandi difficoltà, signore! Mi dia una soluzione."

Il maestro aveva gli occhi chiusi e avendoli aperti dopo cinque minuti disse:

"Non fare così figliolo!

Dona una percentuale di quei guadagni al nostro eremitaggio.

Così tutti i tuoi peccati verranno eliminati."

Detto ciò il maestro tornò a sedersi sulla sua stuoia dunlop (marca britannica produttrice, tra l'altro, anche di materassi in lattice, ndt) e, chiusi gli occhi, si immerse nuovamente in meditazione.

The rise of Hindu Right

Since India is going to face the 2014 general elections, today I would like to write a short retrospective history of the major opposition party, the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party - Indian People's Party) and of the ideology that supports it. Founded in 1980, this can seem a relatively young party, but actually one has to consider it as the new "politically correct" form of an old ideology in indian contemporary politics, namely the Hindu Right.

Dating back at the time of indian Indipendence, there was a strong opposition to the democratic and secular idea of India endorsed by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Indipendent India. Contrary to this modern ideology, many cultural and political traditionalist groups began to emerge in the public debate.

The most influential of this groups is the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh - National Volunteer Organization), which had already been founded in 1925 but tragically hit the headlines in 1948, when Mahatma Gandhi was killed by Nathuram Godse, a brahmin associated with the organization. The RSS, officially a cultural association, is a paramilitary organization imbued with conservative values and a strong and hierarchical structure .

The ideology that is behind the RSS is known as Hindutva (translatable as "hinduness"), a concept which relates nationalism with hinduism, stating that the real indian identity is only the hindu one. Developed by V. D. Savarkar, a conservative ideologist, this concept is in deep contrast with any secular and inclusive idea of India - like that of the Indian National Congress - because its main aim is that of the preservation and protection of hindu value system. The kind of hindu culture designed by Hindutva polarize it against other social and religious components of indian nation, especially from the Muslim, creating and stirring up disorders and communal violence.

Under the aegis of RSS, during the decades an entire universe of associations and movements has been formed, all united under the collective name of Sangh Parivar (Family of Associations). The core groups of the Sangh Parivar are - in addition to the RSS - the VHP (Vishva Hindu Parishad - World Hindu Council) and the BJP (nowadays, whereas in the past other political parties were part of the association, like the Bharatiya Janata Sangh). In short, in the Sangh the RSS is the cultural branch, the BJP is the political one and the VHP is the religious arm.

To sum up the ideology of Hindutva, I think this quotation by D. R. Goyal's history of the RSS is very telling and meaningful:

Hindus have lived in India since times immemorial; Hindus are the nation because all culture, civilisation and life is contributed by them alone; non-Hindus are invaders or guests and cannot be treated as equal unless they adopt Hindu traditions, culture, etc.; the non-Hindus, particularly Muslims and Christians, have been enemies of everything Hindu and are, therefore, to be treated as threats; [...] those who talk of national unity as the unity of all those who live in this country are motivated by the selfish desire of cornering minority votes and are therefore traitors; the unity and consolidation of the Hindus is the dire need of the hour because the Hindu people are surrounded on all sides by enemies; the Hindus must develop the capacity for massive retaliation and offence is the best defence; lack of unity is the root cause of all the troubles of the Hindus and the Sangh is born with the divine mission to bring about that unity.

During the decades, Hindu fundamentalism has gained more and more strength, especially among the uneducated masses and the new emerging middle class - who had abandoned the Congress socialist model of economy in favour of more market-oriented policies - that were looking for a political representation built upon identity lines. The reasons for this rise are plenty and context-related. Between them, the most striking one is the parallel decline of the National Congress in the late 80s and in the 90s, when the newly-formed BJP was building and consolidating political consent thanks to both propaganda and violent actions.

The turning point in this process was the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, the final act of a long dispute about a sixteenth-century mosque in the Uttar Pradesh town of Ayodhya. To shorten this long story, is enough to say that the VHP, with the complicity of right-wing hindu parties, had for long begun to allege that the site of the mosque was the Ram janmabhumi (the exact place of birth of hindu god Rama) and therefore started to mobilize people in order to protect this holy site from muslim presence. Their activities have been conducted up to the demand for the demolition of the mosque, event that was finally achieved on 6th December, thanks to the connivance of the government of Uttar Pradesh, led by Kalyan Singh, a BJP politician.

From then on, the BJP has showed an hidden dual identity. On the one hand, the party is a democratic organization, loyal to the values of the Republic and open to the political debate. But on the other hand, in the background, it's working in order to polarize the nation on communal lines, stirring up the grivances of many parts of the hindu community, using other religious community (especially muslims) as scapegoats.

The other shocking anti-muslim action orchestrated by the BJP is known as the 2002 Gujarat riots. It was triggered by the Godhra train burning, caused by an explosion which occurred soon after a trivial argument between a group of hindu boys and some muslim street vendors at the station platform. Even as the investigations has proved that the explosion was not malicious but accidental and not related to the argument, some RSS members started to spread the rumour that the explosion, in which 58 people lost their lives, was the outcome of an attack carried out by muslims against hindus. The effect of this false rumour was a wide and sudden burst of communal violence against muslims, which lasted for weeks and extended to all north-west India, claiming thousands of lives. At the time the Chief Minister of Gujarat was Narendra Modi, a BJP politician raised in the ranks of RSS, who has been accused of connivance in the event.

It's curious that Mr. Modi is now the ufficial candidate for premiership at next 2014 indian general election representing the right-wing coalition, the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) led by the BJP. Contrary to his recent political history, now he has been presented by his party as the pure and polite face of hindu right against the Congress, portrayed as corrupt and scandal-hit.

जब मैं एक हाई स्कूल की छात्रा थी, तब भारतीय संकृति में रूचि लेने लगी |
फिर भारत के बारे में खबरों की खोज करने लगी और पहली बार हिंदी भाषा का पता चला |
तो विश्वविद्ध्यालय में हिंदी पढ़ने का फैसला किया क्योंकि मेरे मन में जिज्ञासा पैदा हुई थी |
मैने इस भाषा के स्वर और वर्णमाला दोनों ही बहुत पसंद किये थे |
शुरुआत में, शब्दों का उच्चारण ठीक करना और देवनागरी सीखना सबसे कठिन बात थी |
इसके आलावा, एक बातचित या एक पाठ समझने के लिए मुझे बहुत-से नए शब्द सिखने पड़ते थे |
धीरे धीरे मेरी समझ में बेहतरी हुई हैं, खासकर जब से बॉलीवुड की फिल्मों देखने लगी हूँ |
मेरी भारत में यात्रा के बाद, मुझे मालूम हुआ कि बात ठीक कह पाने के लिए अभ्यास करने की ज़रूरत है |

Today I would like to talk about my study of hindi.

When I was an High School student, I began to get interested in indian culture.

Then I started to read up on India and for the first time I came across hindi language.

So I decided to study hindi at University to fulfill the curiosity that was born in my mind.

In fact I've always loved both the sound and the alphabeth of this language.

At the beginning, the most difficult things were learning devanagari and pronounce words correctly.

Apart from this, in order to understand a conversation or a written text I had to learn a lot of new words.

Slowly I was improving my skill, especially since when I began to watch Bollywood movies.

After my trip to India, I realized that I need to practice a lot to succeed in my communication and to express myself fluently.

Even though I carry on studying and exercising, I keep making a lot of mistakes, which make me feel ashamed!

I will go on studying with committment, thanks to the fact that every improvement makes me feel hopeful and pleased.

Oggi voglio parlare del mio studio della lingua hindi.
Quando ero una studentessa liceale, cominciai ad interessarmi alla cultura indiana.
Dopo iniziai ad informarmi sull'India e fu allora che mi imbattei per la prima volta nella lignua hindi.
Quindi presi la decisione di studiare hindi all'Università per soddisfare la curiosità che era nata in me.
Rimasi afascinata sia dal suono che dall'alfabeto di questa nuova lingua.
Inizialmente gli aspetti più difficili furono imparare la devanagari e pronunciare correttamente le parole. Inoltre, per comprendere una conversazione o un testo scritto, avevo bisogno di imparare svariate parole nuove.
Lentamente le mie capacità sono migliorate, specialmente da quando ho cominciato a guardare film di Bollywood.
Dopo il mio viaggio in India, ho capito che per riuscire ad esprimermi correttamente ho bisogno di fare molto esercizio nella conversazione.
Noostante io stia continuando a studiare, faccio ancora molti errori di cui mi vergogno!
Continuerò a studiare con dedizione perchè ogni progresso mi dà soddisfazione e speranza.

My India trip photos - Khajuraho

After staying at Orchha, we went on a day-trip to Khajuraho to see the famous hindu temples of the city, UNESCO Heritages Site. The temples of Khajuraho were erected in a period which spanned from 900 to 1150, the golden age of Chandela dynasty, one of the late Rajput dynasties to resist to the muslim invasions of the time. The complex is divided into three groups of temples, the most famous of which is the western group, comprehending the astonishing shaiva (=hindu tradition regarding lord Shiva) temples of Kandariya Mahadeva and Lakshmana.
This amazing complex is know in the west only for its erotic sculptures, whose meaning has been abuntantly discussed in the academic field, but surely misunderstood by the general audience and by the tourists, who tend to see these sculptures with oddity and maybe maliciousness, as the erotic poses are carved outside temples, which, by contrast (for the dichotomy sacred/secular), are supposed to be sacred. This demonstrate the misconception of ancient hinduism - surely less sexophobic than Christianity (no offence, is a fact!) - and the lack of information about the importance of tantrism in the religious understanding and conception of the time. But this is a very complex subject, so I will fly over it...
Anyway, apart from erotic statues (which by the way are not present throughout the complex), there are scultures of everyday life's scenes, nymphs - known as apsaras - and animals, as well as several gorgeous statues of hindu deities, like Ganesh, Lakshmi, Shiva and Vishnu. To clarify one of the western misunderstanding about the sculptures, it has to be pointed out very clearly that not only in the erotic scenes only the common men and women - not the deites! - are involved, but also that the mundane and the divine iconographies are well-distincted, as all the mundane scenes are depicted only on the outward parts of every temple, whereas the divine scuptures are carved in the internal ones.
Besides the temples, the city of Khajuraho itself is a pleasant place to relax and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings and the lovely and friendly people (aside from the harassing touts!).
We also dined at a alleged italian restaurant - damned food homesickness! - , in which we deceived ourselves on the possibility of eating any actual italian food!

My India trip photos - Agra

On Valentine's day, we went on a day-trip from Delhi to Agra, to visit the Taj Mahal complex.

What can I say to comment one of the most famous monuments not only of India, but of the entire world?!

The day we went to the Taj was not by chance, but we chose to go on Valentine's day to celebrate love, the reason why Moghul emperor Shah Jahan had the Taj built in 1632, in honour of his belowed wife, Mumtaz Mahal (whose name in persian means "the pearl of the palace"), who had died giving birth to his fourteenth son.

The Taj is one of the masterpieces of all humanity, spectacularly erected in white marble and carved with precious details of gems and flower decorations. On the portal of the main entrance, made of red sandstone, there are magnificent inscriptions from the Quran. The complex is surrounded by astonishing Moghul gardens, with fountains and canals, that symbolize islamic paradise and a great exhibition of flora, today recreated following Moghul history of gardening.

Other gorgeous buldings of the complex are a mosque, today still in function (that's why the Taj complex is closed to the public on Fridays) on the west side of the Taj and, simmetrically on the east side of the mausoleum, the Jawab (=answer), a palace with similar structure of that of the mosque but with no clear function, maybe only that of architectonycal symmetry.

It's difficult to convey the emotions and the feelings of beeing in front of such a masterpiece of art, so let me conclude with Nobel price Rabindranth Tagore's words about Taj Mahal:

"You know Shah Jahan, life and youth, wealth and glory, they all drift away in the current of time. You strove therefore, to perpetuate only the sorrow of your heart? Let the splendor of diamond, pearl and ruby vanish? Only let this one teardrop, this Taj Mahal, glisten spotlessly bright on the cheek of time, forever and ever."

These are the photos of the first city we've visited in my last trip to India, Delhi.

We stayed at "Smyle Inn" hostel in Paharganj, the famous backpacker area. Paharganj is for sure a place not suitable for everyone, because is such a crazy neighbourhood, full of people, bazars and unfortunately very noisy and dirty! Anyway, I can recommend staying at Smyle Inn because it's an oasys in the chaos of Paharganj area.

Since it was our first stop-over in India, we've needed time to familiarize with the astonishing and shocking environment that India is. So, we've visited only the main monuments of Delhi, like the Jama Masjid, the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk bazar in Old Delhi and then Connaught Place and the India Gate.

We've spent the rest of our time in the city wandering and roaming in the chaotic main bazar of Paharganj, looking for the best bargaining of clothes and souvenirs and tasting indian delicacies and the all-present masala chay, indian spiced tea.

The craziest thing in the city was moving around with auto-rickshaw, the only mode of transport that can go easily in the absurd and illogical traffic of Delhi streets! We also bought our first indian suits, shalwar kameez for me and kurta pajama for my boyfriend, trying to mix with indian customs and lifestyle.

Delhi is one of the biggest metropolis in India, a shocking but fulfilling welcoming to India, only if one is able to adapt to it...

My India trip photos - Orchha

This is for sure the best part of our trip in India... Orchha is a nice village in northern Madhya Pradesh, near to Jhansi, where it's possible to enjoy a close and deep contact with nature and real rural indian life. We chose to stay at "Friends of Orchha", an ONG which focuses on establishing a cultural link between western tourists and local indian families, getting the two in contact by living together and sharing food and experiences. I will highly recommend this kind of accomodation, to get off the tourist track and instead try how to live like common indian villagers.

At Orchha, we have visited the main historycal and architectural beauties of this little jewel along the Betwa river, including Jahangir Mahal, Raj Mahal and the astonishing temples of Chaturbuj, Ram Raja and Lakshminarayan Mandir, my favourite one, with gorgeous paintings depicting stories from the Mahabharata.

We wished our time there would never have passed...

Delhi (in hindi दिल्ली dilli), capitale dell'India, è la prima città che visiteremo nel nostro viaggio. Tra le città più antiche al mondo, Delhi è oggi una metropoli ricca di stringenti contraddizioni, dove convivono 13 milioni di abitantti provenienti da ogni parte dell'India.

La sua eredità culturale è tra le più ricche del mondo, dato che fu capitale di numerosi imperi, dai sultanati centro-asiatici, ai Moghul, senza dimenticare l'impero britannico, di cui fu capitale dal 1911 all'indipendenza nel 1947.

A livello archeologico, l'odierna Delhi è il risultato della commistione di sette diversi insediamenti storici, oltre al leggendario primo nucleo identificato da alcune cronache come la mitica Indraprastha, capitale dell'impero dei Pandava, i regnanti del poema epico Mahabharata, risalente al II millennio a.c.

La città è suddivisa in distretti, tra cui i più turisticamente rilevanti New Delhi - fondata dagli inglesi e costruita dall'architetto Edwin Ludyens per celebrare la gloria del Raj britannico, oggi sede di numerosi edifici governativi e dell'India Gate, un arco di trionfo costruito in onore dei soldati indiani morti durante la I guerra mondiale - e Old Delhi, città fortificata fondata dall'imperatore Moghul Shah Jahan (il committente del celeberrimo Taj Mahal di Agra) nel 1639, ricca di monumenti e siti religiosi, tra cui il Lal Qila (Forte Rosso), la residenza fortificata dei Moghul e la Jama Masjid, la più grande moschea dell'India.

Oltre a queste due zone, l'intera città pullula di innumerevoli monumenti, a testimonianza della sua antichità e dei suoi diversi regni, il tutto a stretto contatto con edifici governativi (Rashtrapati Bhavan, residenza presidenziale, il Parliament House, sede del parlamento e il Secretariat Building, sede del gabinetto di governo e di alcuni ministeri) e luoghi di culti di diverse religioni, da templi hindu come il Laxsminarayan Temple e l'Akshardham Temple, al famosissimo Tempio del Fiore di Loto della religione Baha'i, simbolo di tolleranza religiosa e unità della razza umana, ma anche templi sikh (Gurudwara Bangla Sahib) e moschee, tra cui la già citata Jama Masjid.

Tra i monumenti che testimoniano la presenza musulmana nel paese, il Qutb Minar - minareto alto 72 metri eretto nel XII secolo dal primo sultano di Delhi, Qutb-ud-din Aibak - e la Tomba di Humayun - complesso di edifici Moghul comprendente il mausoleo funebre per l'imperatore Humayun costruito nel 1536 - sono stati nominati Patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'UNESCO.

Non vanno dimenticati altri monumenti e siti turistici di altrettanta importanza, tra cui due luoghi dedicati a Gandhi, il Gandhi Smriti - museo che racchiude la sua ultima residenza e il luogo dove venne assassinato nel 1948 - e il Raj Ghat, luogo della sua cremazione, e i numerosi musei della città (National Museum of India, National Science Center Museum, National Rail Museum,...), per non parlare del Nehru Planetarium e del Janta Mantar, osservatorio astronomico del XVIII secolo, costruito dal Maharaja Jai Singh II di Jaipur a partire dal 1724.

Delhi è anche tra le città più importanti dell'India per quanto riguarda l'istruzione superiore, in particolare nel campo dell'ICT e dell'ingegneria. Tra le istituzioni più famose, che attraggono ogni anno migliaia di studenti da tutto il mondo, citiamo l'Indian Istitute of Tecnology, la Jawaharlal Nehru University, la Delhi University e l'Indraprashta Institute of Information Tecnology.

La città è rinomata anche come capitale dello shopping, vista la presenza di numerosi e vivaci mercati, tra cui quelli di Chandni Chowk, di Janpath e di Paharganj, oltre a recenti centri commerciali in crescita esponenziale.

Tutto questo dimostra il carattere poliedrico e cosmopolita di una città tanto radicata nelle proprie tradizioni quanto proiettata al futuro.

Questo è l'itinerario per il mio prossimo viaggio in India a Febbraio.
Starò via un mese e viaggerò in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Madhya Pradesh e West Bengal.
Da Roma viaggerò con la Emirates sulla tratta Roma-Dubai-Delhi all'andata e Kolkata-Dubai-Roma al ritorno.
Le principali città che visiterò saranno, come indicato nella mappa:

- Delhi
- Haridwar e Rishikesh
- Agra
- Jhansi e Orchha
- Khajuraho
- Varanasi
- Darjeeling (via New Jalpaiguri)
- Kolkata
- Shantiniketan

I principali spostamenti saranno in treno (Sleeper class), più vari piccoli trasferimenti in autorickshaw, bus o jeep.
Alloggerò in mid-range o budget guesthouse e mangerò cibi locali, preferendo economici e completi thali (=piatto unico servito in un piatto diviso in vani dove sono presenti le varie portate).

This is the itinerary of my next India trip, planned for February.
I'm going to stay for a month, travelling in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal. From Rome I'm travelling with Emirates on the Rome-Dubai-Delhi route for the outward journey and on the Kolkata-Dubai-Rome route for the return journey.

La musica di Rabindranath Tagore - রবীন্দ্র সংগীত (Robindro Shongit)

Da grande artista poliedrico qual'era , Rabindranath Tagore ha composto moltissime canzoni, arraggiandone la parte musicale e componendone i testi. In India e Bangladesh, è nato addirittura un intero genere musicale che comprende le canzoni di Tagore, chiamato Robindro Shongit (= La musica di Robindro). Oggi esistono scuole dove si insegna questo stile e molti rinomati artisti che suonano queste canzoni, anche fuori dall'India.

Oggi voglio condividere "Bhalobashi Bhalobashi" (="L'amore, l'amore), una delle più celebri canzoni di Tagore e tra le mie preferite. Nel video potete vedere la versione di questa canzone realizzata da una popstar famosissima in Bangladesh, Tishma.

Ribadisco che, avendo tradotto io il testo dalla bengali, la sua poeticità è notevolmente inferiore all'originale. Spero comunque di riuscire a trasmettere la dolcezza e il carattere aulico delle parole.

यहाँ से अब्रुज्जो के राष्ट्रीय उद्यान के पहाड़ दिखाई देते हैं |
अब्रुज्जो का राष्ट्रीय उद्यान इटली का सबसे पुराना उद्यान है क्योंकि उसकी संस्था उन्नीस सौ बाईस की है |
यह उद्यान प्राकृतिक और पर्यावरणीय संरक्षण के लिए अनुकरणीय है |
उद्यान की मौजूदगी ने पहाड़ी प्राणीजात को बचाया है |
वस्तुतः कभी-कभी भेड़िय, भालू , हिरन या लोमड़ी दूर से देखा जा सकता है |
अधिकांश पगडंडी यातायात के लिए निषिद्ध है केवल पैदल, साईकिल से या घोड़े से गम्य है |
मेरे अनुसार प्रकृती को भोगने के लिए यह सबसे अच्छी तरह है और इसके कारण पहाड़ों पर पैदल यात्रा करना मुझे बहुत पसंद है |
चूँकि पहाड़ों के बीच में जवान हुई, इसलिए मैं सोचती हूँ कि प्रकृती से संबंध रखने के लिए यह आदर्श जगह है |

Abruzzo National Park

My parent's house is in a verdant valley, from which can be seen the mountains of Abruzzo National Park. Abruzzo National Park is the oldest park in Italy because it was founded in 1922.

This park is a model for its natural and enviromental protection.

In fact at times you can catch a glimpse of wolves, bears, deers or foxes.

Most of the mountain path is closed to traffic and is accessible only on foot, by bicycle or by horse.

In my opinion this is the best way to enjoy nature and that's because I really like mountain hiking.

Since I've grown up surrounded by mountains, I believe that this is the ideal place to be in close contact with nature.

Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo

La casa dei miei genitori si trova in una verdeggiante vallata da cui si possono vedere le montagne del Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo.

Il Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo è il più antico parco d'Italia perchè venne fondato nel 1922.

Questo parco è un modello per la tutela ambientale e naturale.

Infatti a volte si possono avvistare lupi, orsi, cervi o volpi.

La maggior parte dei sentieri di montagna è chiusa al traffico motorizzato ed è accessibile solo a piedi, in bicicletta o a cavallo.

Secondo me questo è il miglior modo per apprezzare la natura e per questo motivo adoro le escursioni in montagna.

Dato che sono cresciuta tra le montagne, ritengo che sia il luogo ideale per avere un autentico contatto con la natura.

Guerra di liberazione Bangladesh - বাংলাদেশ মুক্তি যুদ্ধ - Tesina universitaria

Oggi voglio postare la mia tesina, svolta durante la triennale per l'esame di Letteratura Moderne del Sub-Continente, sulla Guerra di Liberazione del Bangladesh del 1971, evento storico contemporaneo fondamentale ma non adeguatamente ricordato e discusso.
Questo saggio è un lavoro storico-letterario sugli eventi del '71, grazie ai quali nacque il moderno stato del Bangladesh. Dopo un necessario inquadramento storico sui fatti antecedenti la guerra e sulla guerra in sè, la parte letteraria tratta dell'analisi del romanzo della giovane scrittrice bengalese Tahmima Anam "A Golden Age" (tragicamente tradotto in italiano con il titolo "I giorni dell'amore e della guerra", di certo non rispettoso dell'originale), al fine di mostrare come la letteratura possa rileggere e trasmettere ai posteri la storia.
Segue infine la sintesi delle testimonianze dirette di due protagonisti a vario titolo di quegli eventi, il Sig. Saifullah Said, ex-combattente durante la Liberazione e la Sig.ra Nasrin Hasan, figlia di un importante politico del Partito Awami bangladeshi e parente di altri personaggi attivi durante la guerra. Perciò, si consiglia di affiancare alla lettura di quest'ultimo capitolo del saggio la visione delle relative interviste che organizzai durante lo studio.

अगले फरवरी मैं आखिरकार प्रथम बार के लिए मेरे बॉइफ्रेन्ड के साथ भारत जाऊँगी |
मैं इस अनुभव को बहुत समय से करना चाहती थी , लेकिन पढ़ाई मुझे बहुत व्यस्त रखती है |
चूँकि मैं कई जगाहों देखने जाना चाहती हूँ , इसलिए मैं अब यात्राक्रम को सोच रही हूँ |
मैं एक महिने तक ही रह जाऊँगी , तो केवल सब से मुख्य स्थानों को देख पाऊँगी |
मैं ज़रूर दिल्ली, बनारस और कोलकता के नगर जाऊँगी और दार्जीलिंग तक पहुंचना भी अच्छा लगेगा |
पर्यटकों के यात्राक्रमों से दूर रहने की कोशिश करुँगी क्योंकि मैं एक असली यात्रा करना चाहती हूँ |
वस्तुतः मेरा उद्धेश्य है की भारतिये लोगों से मिलना है और उनके साथ हिंदी में बात करना है |
मुझे मालूम है कि भारत एक इतना बड़ा देश है कि पूरा घुमने के लिए एक जीवन पर्याप्त नहीं है , फिर भी यह मेरी प्रथम यात्रा ही है |

My first trip to India

Next february I will finally go to India with my boyfriend.
It's a long time since I want to have this experience, but my studies have kept me busy since now.
As I would like to visit as more sites as possible, now I'm planning my itinerary.
[Unfortunately] I will stay only for a month, so I will be able to see merely the most important places.
I will surely visit the cities of Delhi, Benares and Kolkata, but I would like to arrive also to Darjeeling.
I will try to keep away from turistic itineraries because I want my journey to be authentic.
In fact my aim is to meet indian people and to speak in hindi with them.
I'm well-aware that India is such a wide country that a life is not enough to tour it all, but this is only my first trip!

Dato che ho intenzione di vedere svariati luoghi, ora sto pensando al mio itinerario.
[Sfortunatamente] Avrò a disposizione solo un mese, quindi potrò visitare solo i siti più importanti.
Sicuramente andrò a Delhi, a Benares e a Calcutta, anche se mi piacerebbe molto arrivare fino a Darjeeling.
Cercherò di tenermi alla larga dagli itinerari turistici perchè vorrei fare un viaggio autentico.
Infatti il mio obiettivo è quello di conoscere persone indiane e conversare in hindi con loro.
Sono ben consapevole che l'India è un paese talmente grande che non basterebbe una vita per girarlo tutto, ma questo è solo il mio primo viaggio!

Honorific Language in Hindi

Today I would like to share my essay and my LibreOffice presentation of a sociolinguistic short thesis I made at university and discussed in class.
It's a study about honorific language in hindi, since the use of polite forms of address is an essential way of communicating in hindi.
In my essay I analysed the most common forms of honorific, from second person pronouns to honorific imperative, as well as the ubiquitous honorific suffix -ji and a brief collection of honorific and polite forms of address and epithets, like the well-known Sahib.
All the honorific expressions are followed by own-made hindi sentences, in order to better explain theory.

Gayatri Mantra

Gayatri Mantra is one of the oldest Vedic hymns, traditionally called shloka (verse), composed in gayatri vedic metric style and attributed to the rishi Visvamitra. It can be interpreted as an invocation to the vedic deva Savitri, a solar divinity. According to the latter attribute of god Savitri, the hymn can also be viewed as an prayer to the Sun, with all its cosmologycal implication, that is to say the creative power of making the universe exist. We can find the Gayatri Mantra in many other vedic texts, as in the Bhagavad Gita or in the Manusmirti. It is also related to one of the most important samskara (hindu brahmanical rites of passage), the upanayana, in which the devote becomes part of the twice-born brahmanical society. The opening formula Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha has a lot of symbolic meanings and is called the Mahavyarhti, "the great utterance".

By the way, besides its story and old significance, Gayatri Mantra is still popular today among hindus and during the centuries has been variously interpreted by many intellectuals, guru or member of religious movement, like the neo-Hinduism movements from the beginning of twentieth century.
Here I report the devanagari verses and their IAST translitteration:

भूर्भुवः॒ स्वः ।

तत्स॑वितुर्वरे॑ण्यं ।

भ॒र्गो॑ दे॒वस्य॑ धीमहि। ।

धियो॒ यो नः॑ प्रचो॒दया॑त्॥ ।

Oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ

tát savitúr váreṇ(i)yaṃ

bhárgo devásya dhīmahi

dhíyo yó naḥ pracodáyāt

This can be roughtly traslated literally as:

"May we attain that excellent glory of Savitar the god:

So may he stimulate our prayers."

(The Hymns of the Rigveda, 1896, Ralph T. H. Griffith)

Regarding the actual meaning of the verses, as I mention before there are lots of different versions of the hymn.
Personally, I feel Swami Vivekananda's and S. Radhakrishnan's paraphrases to be more likely and so I quote:

"We meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this universe; may He enlighten our minds." (Swami Vivekananda, 1915)
"We meditate on the effulgent glory of the divine Light; may he inspire our understanding." (S. Radhakrishnan -1-,1947)
"We meditate on the adorable glory of the radiant sun; may he inspire our intelligence." (S. Radhakrishnan -2-, 1953).

I will like to share also the free traslation of Sir William Jones, one of the first indologist who was a real admirer of Indian tradition, because I appreciate his poetic choices of words and expressions:

"Let us adore the supremacy of that divine sun, the god-head who illuminates all, who recreates all, from whom all proceed, to whom all must return, whom we invoke to direct our understandings aright in our progress toward his holy seat." (William Jones, 1807)

Giornata Internazionale della Lingua Madre - Ekushey February

Domani, 21 Febbraio, si celebra in tutto il mondo la Giornata Internazionale della Lingua Madre, istituita nel 1999 dall'UNESCO per la salvaguardia del pluralismo linguistico e la protezione delle lingue "in via di estinzione". La data del 21 Febbraio è stata scelta in onore dei martiri per la lingua bengali del '52; quel giorno, infatti, centinaia di studenti e cittadini comuni bangladeshi vennero brutalmente uccisi dall'esercito pakistano durante una delle più importanti manifestazioni indette dal popolo bangladeshi per la salvaguardia della propria lingua, la bengali. Queste manifestazioni furono la risposta popolare all'imposizione, da parte dell'allora presidente del Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah, della lingua urdu come unica lingua ufficiale di stato. Bisogna premettere che nel 1952 lo stato del Pakistan era composto da due ali, il West Pakistan (odierno Pakistan) e l'East Pakistan (odierno Bangladesh-dal 1971-). La lingua urdu, scelta come unica lingua ufficiale, veniva parlata solo dall'élite intellettuale e dalla classe dirigente del West Pakistan, mentre in tutto l'East Pakistan si parlava - e si parla tuttora - bengali.
Dopo le proteste di numerosi intellettuali bangladeshi, si scatenò la rivolta popolare a causa delle mancate risposte da parte del governo. La manifestazione del 21 Febbraio a Dhaka, la capitale dell'allora East Pakistan, fu la più imponente di una serie di proteste e scioperi da parte del popolo bangladeshi e venne repressa nel sangue dall'esercito pakistano.
Il 21 Febbraio 1952 è una data importante per il popolo bangladeshi anche perchè per molti storici segnò l'inizio del processo di acquisizione dell'identità bangladeshi e dell'auto-consapevolezza della propria peculiarità linguistica e culturale, processo che condusse il popolo bengalese alla Guerra di Liberazione del 1971 (Muktijuddho, argomento di una mia tesina universitaria e delle due interviste presenti qui nel blog), che si concluse con l'indipendenza dal Pakistan e con la nascita del moderno stato repubblicano del Bangladesh.

In memoria della morte di tanti giovani cittadini il 21 Febbraio del 1952, al culmine delle proteste nate grazie al Movimento per la Lingua Bengali (Bangla Bhasha Andolon), ogni anno tutta la comunità bangladeshi in ogni parte del mondo celebra questa giornata, comunemente nota come Shaheed Dibosh (=Giornata dei Martiri) e festa nazionale in Bangladesh, il cui fulcro è rappresentato dallo Shaheed Minar (=Monumento per i martiri) di Dhaka.
L'anno scorso, durante le celebrazioni della Giornata Internazionale della Lingua Madre a Roma è stata inaugurata una fedele copia dello Shaheed Minar in Largo Bangladesh, nel parco di Villa Ada, vicino all'Ambasciata del Bangladesh in Italia, in presenza del Ministro degli Esteri bangladeshi Dipu Moni e dell'Ambasciatore del Bangladesh in Italia, Masud Bin Momen, oltre che di numerose figure politiche e istituzionali italiane e bangladeshi.
Anche quest'anno verrà celebrato l'evento a Roma presso lo stesso sito, dove è presente stabilmente il monumento. Presto posterò alcune foto che farò domani in occasione delle celebrazioni, per condividere questo evento, esempio di felice convivenza tra popoli e di rispetto della multicultura e del plurilinguismo.

Mi dispiace di non aver trovato il tempo di aggiornare questo blog, ma ho passato gli ultimi 3 intensi mesi a scrivere e discutere la mia tesi di laurea triennale, che ho conseguito il 22 dicembre scorso con la strabiliante votazione di 110 e lode!!!
Il mio lavoro di ricerca si è concentrato sulla critica ad alcuni pregiudizi occidentali sull'India, argomento che mi ha sempre affascinato e che mi ha portato a studiare l'origine e le radici di tali stereotipi. Per fare ciò, mi sono riallacciata alle argomentazioni del critico letterario palestinese Edward Said, intellettuale che negli anni '70 ha coniato il termine "Orientalismo" per indicare il sistema culturale di stampo eurocentrico che ha creato visioni stereotipate sull'India al fine di sostenere e giustificare il dominio coloniale. Ritengo che ancora oggi abbiamo ereditato queste visioni pregiudiziali sull'India e perciò mi è sembrato interessante compiere questo studio, anche se in modo meramente introduttivo, dato che l'argomento è ancora oggetto di dibattito in ambito indologico, soprattutto nel contesto anglosassone.

In attesa di scrivere nuovi articoli sul blog, ho pensato di rendere pubblicamente accessibile la mia tesi a chiunque possa essere interessato alla tematica trattata. Perciò qui sotto troverete il link per poter scaricare la tesi dal sito di file hosting Divshare (ottima alternativa a Megaupload e Rapidshare, che consiglio vivamente!). Con mio grande piacere, ho visto sul sito de La Repubblica due diverse iniziative portate avanti da indiani riguardo l'ecosostenibilità e voglio condividerle. Sono felice di poter constatare che l'opinione pubblica indiana sta cominciando ad acquisire consapolevolezza dell'importanza di diminuire l'impatto delle attività umane sull'ambiente e, anche attraverso strumenti "fai-da-te", dimostra la proprià creatività ed ingegnosità. Si spera che presto anche il governo indiano possa riuscire a investire e incentivare su vasta scala politiche economiche più rispettose dell'ambiente e cominci a premiare i cittadini che dimostrano con le loro invenzioni una grande sensibilità ecologica.

La prima iniziativa riguarda un motorino alimentato ad energia solare creato da un indiano di Bangalore con suo nipote, partendo da uno scooter di seconda mano acquistato per soli 60 dollari!I due hanno applicato sul motorino un piccolo pannello fotovoltaico che permette al mezzo di muoversi per 200 Km in presenza di sole!!!

La seconda invenzione è stata sviluppata da un ingegnere gujarati che, consapevole dell'elevata produzione di rifiuti plastici nel paese, ha creato una macchina che trasforma la plastica in olio per uso industriale! Ora ha intenzione di chiedere al governo indiano incentivi per la produzione seriale del prototipo.
