New Delhi, May 21: Direct tax collections for 2008-09 have missed the target of Rs 3,45,000-crore by Rs 6,000 crore because the economic slowdown has hit the earnings of companies.

The government had lowered its target of direct tax collection to Rs 3,45,000 crore from Rs 3,64,000 crore to factor in the effects of the recession and the tax waivers offered to industry.

A finance ministry statement, however, maintained that the direct tax mop-up exceeded the previous year’s collection by about Rs 26,000 crore.

Analysts said the decline in collections would put pressure on the government to increase its revenue to meet a ballooning fiscal deficit. This may be a difficult task as the slowdown is expected to continue for some time.

MUMBAI, May 20 (Reuters) - India's gold imports fell by 83 percent in the first quarter as higher prices and 'deteriorating' domestic economic conditions dented consumer demand, the World Gold Council (WGC) said on Wednesday.

"Jewellery demand is unlikely to return to more positive territory in current market conditions," said Aram Shishmanian, CEO of World Gold Council in a statement.

India's gold imports in January-March period stood at 17.7 tonnes. Gold prices in India, the world's top consumer, in the January-March quarter rose by 11 percent, after having struck a record high of 16,040 rupees per 10 grams on Feb. 20, as concerns about global economic recession spurred safe haven purchases.

The gold contract in the continuation chart MAUc1 traded 0.29 percent lower at 14,279 rupees per 10 grams at 2:00 p.m..

Trying to bring to the forefront the tragic reality of a woman facing risk to her life during a natural process such as childbirth, the White Ribbon Alliance India's (WRAI) main aim in launching this web campaign is to spread awareness about healthcare for mothers-to-be and speak out against needless maternal mortality.

Aparajita Gogoi, country head of WRAI, said: 'In very simple words what the Million Mums campaign wants to achieve is to bring together a million mothers, or more, and raise a million pounds, at least, in order to mobilise this campaign to bring down maternal mortality'.

Dr. Manmonhan Singh, the 76 year old Economist of India is now hospitalized after complaints of fatigue and chest pain, a busy schedule can also be a reason despite the age factor.

PMO confirmed, a coronary artery bypass graft surgery is to be performed by a team of 6/8 expert surgeons in Delhi comprising of doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) Mumbai.

Indian Prime minister previously had bypass surgery in 1990 and an angioplasty in 2004.

After an estimated 6 hours of marathon heart operation basically to free the blocked arteries on saturday, it will take him approximate four weeks of rest and recovery time after this critical operation.

For the mean time the decisions are to be taken by a senior leadership and mainly by Pranab Mukherjee as the senior-most leader holding the portfolio of external affairs minister. Pranab will also take care of the Finance ministry.

While Mr. Mukherjee is not been given an official title of PM, the republic day celebrations will be presided by Vice President Shri Mohammad Hamid Ansari and President of India Smt. Pratibha Patil.

The Congress leadership is also worried about the forthcoming general election which is due by May and the candidate to be promoted as the next prime ministerial candidate.

World bank to ban 3 Indian companies soon

The world bank is again firing a salvo at the Indian IT industry's top companies.
As per the latest report from yahoo, the premier global bank will be publishing a black-list of Indian companies to work for.

Washington: The World Bank said on Sunday it plans to publish the names of all companies it bars from receiving bank contracts, and named three Indian firms.

"There are currently three companies that (have) been debarred along with their affiliates under the Bank group's corporate procurement program," the bank said in a statement.

It said it had barred IT company Satyam Computer Services for eight years and Wipro Technologies for four years for "improper benefits to bank staff".

The World Bank on Sunday said it plans to publish in the future the names of all companies it bans from doing work with the poverty-fighting institution, and immediately listed three Indian companies.

The Bank said the move aligns its disclosure practices for companies involved in wrongdoing that work on development projects financed by the World Bank and those that provide goods and services directly to the institution.

"This change was made in the interest of fairness and transparency," the Washington-based lender said in a statement.

Until now, the World Bank has only published the names of debarred companies involved in Bank-financed projects, but has not listed blacklisted firms that receive direct contracts from the institution under its corporate procurement program.

"There are currently three companies that have been debarred along with their affiliates under the Bank Group's corporate procurement program," the Bank said.

Satyam Computers Founder and Chairman Ramalinga Raju has resigned from the Board. Raju has put in his papers and is waiting for the Board's decision.

Satyam has been in news lately because of the Maytas deal. The resignation comes with shocking revelations from the Raju himself.

Confessing to fraud, Raju has written a letter to the board giving details of how the balance sheet has inflated cash balances of Rs 5040 crore and accrued interest of Rs 376 crore is non-existent. Rs 1230 crore was arranged to Satyam and is not reflected in the books.

"I am now prepared to subject myself to the laws of the land and face consequences thereof", the letter said.

Raju has suggested Ram Maynampati as the interim CEO

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) says that the letter has important implications for the markets and investigation is required to find out who else is involved in this fraud.

. Developers are offering a 10% price cut for a few days. The catchphrase, though, is that the price cuts are mainly only for ‘to be developed’ properties and cuts for developed structures are few. Several builders have announced good bookings through these cuts.

One more thing that needs to be watched out is: the Maharashtra Housing
Policy states that sales purchase transactions should be in terms of carpet area — the policy was implemented in mid 2007. However, all flats sold by builders are done on super built-up areas. The carpet area is about 60-65% of the super built-up area. This makes flats 60% expensive than what is offered and the per-square-foot rate on carpet area is 60% expensive that what is advertised — you will be paying about Rs 4,600 per square foot (psf) instead of Rs 3,000 psf.

New Delhi: India's leading private air carrier, Jet Airways, and state-owned Air India Monday announced fare cuts. While Jet will reduce the fares on its domestic routes by up to 40 percent with immediate effect, Air India is expected to announce the quantum Tuesday.

In a statement, Jet said the economy class base fare will now be Rs.2,000 on its Mumbai-Delhi flight, Rs.4,065 on the Mumbai-Kolkata route, Rs.1,220 on the Bangalore-Mumbai sector, and Mumbai-Ahmedabad Rs.500.

The fares are exclusive of taxes, which average about Rs.3,500 on every economy ticket.

Earlier in the day, Air India confirmed to IANS it too would slash fares from Jan 1.

Kingfisher Airlines Sunday announced fare cut from January 1.

An Indian Institute of Technology survey says every IIT-ian has created 100 jobs and that every rupee spent on an IIT-ian has 'created an economic impact of Rs 50 at the global level, half of which is India's share'.

The study is a global Internet-based survey that attempts to map the impact of IIT-ians on the global economy across areas like entrepreneurship, scientific and technological achievement, social transformation, research, educational and leadership.

The survey takes stock of the contribution made by IIT-ians over the last half a century across professions and geographies, and to create a fact-base for mobilising IITs and IIT-ians to find out how they can do even more.

The impact study was launched on September 22 and more than 4,500 IIT alumni have participated in it, providing a robust sample from which to draw preliminary conclusions.

Indian companies have been perceived as one of the worst bribe-payers while engaging in business abroad, ranking along with firms in other BRIC countries - Russia and China - according to anti-corruption organisation Transparency International 2008 Bribe Payers Index, released on Tuesday.

Though India has improved its BPI score of 6.8 out of 10 this year compared to the last BPI survey in 2006, when it was ranked last with a score of 4.62, it still remains one of the five worst countries in the world, as bribery by emerging exporters is still on the high side. The lower the average score, higher the corruption.

"The BPI provides evidence that a number of companies from major exporting countries still use bribery to win business abroad, despite awareness of its damaging impact on corporate reputations and ordinary communities," said TI Chair Huguette Labelle in a press statement.

Loans Cheaper : Good news in recession time India

Good news coming in steps for the Indian consumers:

Drop in bank interest rates are the latest.

Two days after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced 100-basis point cuts in key lending rates, the country’s second largest private sector lender HDFC Bank today lowered prime lending rate (PLR) 50 basis points and state-owned Union Bank 75 basis points to 12.5 per cent.

HDFC Bank said its benchmark prime lending rate (BPLR) will fall to 16 per cent in two stages. A 25 basis point reduction will be effective December 15, and a similar cut will be effected from January 1, 2009.

“The drop in the PLR follows the reduction in the bank’s incremental cost of funds and the significant easing seen recently in the monetary stance and the local currency money markets,” HDFC Bank Executive Director Paresh Sukthankar said in a statement.

Other banks, including State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Uco Bank, will take a call on cutting rates later this week. Uco Bank Chairman and Managing Director S K Goel said the bank’s asset liability committee (Alco) is meeting on December 12 to decide rate cuts.

Tough IT laws for Indians ahead

The union government is planning to define cyber crimes under the IT Act 2000 and is likely to introduce Amendment Bill in the winter session of parliament. It would cover all crimes where technology is used for terror and unsocial activities. It would cover cyber terrorism, child pornography, spam and phishing besides data security and privacy.

Director General in the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Gulshan Rai said that the amendment in IT act is necessary, as rate of cyber crime is increasing by about 15 per cent per year. He was speaking at a discussion on "Are we losing the battle against cyber crime?" organized on the second day of the U.N.-sponsored Internet Governance Forum. He stressed to increase the international collaboration to deal with technology oriented crimes.

Rai said that there must be a system for information sharing across the globe to tackle cyber criminals. Police and judiciary should be trained to collect and analyze potential evidence with the help of public private partnership.

Use of technology in each segment has also increased the risks. Use of very sophisticated devices and inter-connected networks has increased the variety and complexity of threats. Special Secretary of ICT Ministry, R. Chandrasekhar also advocated international co-operation to enact uniform cyber security laws among different countries.

Petrol Cheaper - Diesel Cheaper - LPG constant

NEW DELHI: The government on Friday slashed prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 2 a litre, respectively, with effect from midnight. The

price cut, the first in over two years, will come as a relief to fuel consumers, tame inflation and boost demand in the economy. On the flip side, the move will shrink oil companies’ margins, which had just begun improving with the fall in crude oil prices.

The announcement by petroleum minister Murli Deora comes ahead of Saturday’s demand booster package and a Reserve Bank of India rate cut, which are expected to give an impetus to demand. Mr Deora told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs that Wednesday’s reduction was an ”interim measure” and that the government would continue to watch the global prices of crude oil and react accordingly.

Most bosses monitor employees' Web surfing at work

London, December 3 (ANI): A new study has revealed that two-thirds of British employers keep a check on how many times their employees spend surfing the Internet, and which websites they visit.

An equal number of employers also block "inappropriate" websites, according to the Chartered Management Institute poll of 1,000 managers aged 35.

The survey revealed that older bosses frequently saw the internet as "a massive time-waster" rather than a potentially useful way to work.

It even revealed that one in six managers under 35 considered their employers to be "dinosaurs" when it came to adopting the latest web trends.

Only 49 per cent of those surveyed said that their organisation only "takes up things once they've been tried and tested".

There were only four per cent of the people who said that their employer "falls in love with the latest trend".

On Sunday, Shivraj Patil who had been under tremendous pressure to quit, both from within and outside the party resigned as Home Minister on Sunday.

And now sources say, the heat is on Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. He is "almost certain" to be replaced as pressure continues to mount, sources said.

Terror Attacks Blasts at Colaba, CST Mumbai, India

A widely spread thinking about the Political un-will to weed out terror from this country. Every government has failed to stand to the common-man's dream of a peaceful life and a no-crime society.

Analysts in US and all over the world are comparing this attack to US's 9 /11, but will this government take an decisive action or just the lame duck "condemn" messages will be circulated?

This is a wakeup call for all voters ! Cast you vote intelligently and dont follow the caste-based mentality.

There are shootouts / explosions reported near populated areas and hotels in Mumbai near CST Station, a fulcrum of western railway. This is Kolaba , south Mumbai area, near to Nariman Point area and many are injured.

After a long long time, well in fact the first time in his life, Mukesh Ambani ( Elder son of Dhirubhai Ambani) ranks #1 in the Richest Indians list, survey conducted by Forbes recently.

New Delhi, Nov 13 (ANI): Mukesh Ambani has replaced steel magnate Lakshmi Niwas Mittal as the richest Indian in the world, according to the latest Forbes annual rich list for the country.

UK resident Lakshmi Mittal, dropped 30.5 billion dollar amid plunging steel prices and slipped to No. 2.

Mukesh Ambani, who oversees petrochemicals giant Reliance Industries, grabs the top spot for the first time, despite losing 28.2 billion dollar in the past year. His estranged brother, Anil, ranked third, is the biggest dollar loser, down 32.5 billion dollar, Forbes said.

Telecom czar Sunil Mittal and realtor K P Singh are ranked fourth and fifth with net worth of 7.9 billion dollar and 7.8 billion dollar, respectively.
