US woman found stabbed to death in Costa Rica hotel

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — A U.S. woman who organized volunteer medical missions in Central America was found stabbed to death at a hotel in Costa Rica's capital of San Jose, authorities said.

Police said the body of 45-year-old Sondra Lynn was discovered on a bed in the hotel on Thursday. Officials gave no information on a possible motive in the killing.

The Vida Volunteer organization that the woman founded identified her as Sondra Lynn Elizondo and gave her age as 46. The group, which is based in Merritt Island, Florida, helps provide health and veterinary care in Guatemala, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

In a statement Friday, the group said Elizondo "was largely responsible for defining and implementing Vida's core values."

"Sondra's death is a tragic loss for all of us who considered her a close friend, as well as a loss for Vida Volunteer, the underserved communities we help and everyone else who knew her," said the group's communications manager, Ana Salas. "Sondra dedicated her life to her children and this organization. Our heart is heavy at her loss, but we are more committed than ever to continue her legacy."

Vida Volunteer said the victim was a social worker and Minnesota native who resided in Merritt Island, Florida. She had served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica from 1994 to 1996.

In an email, the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica confirmed that it was aware of the investigation into an American woman's death and was in close contact with Costa Rican authorities.

The story says-The Thorale (Elder) Bajirao once saw a rabbit chasing a dog in this place. Taking inspiration from this Shaniwar Wada was built, a place which would never see defeat. It used to be the head quarter of the Peshwas and it symbolizes Pune's culture. Looking at the construction one understands how the structure was built giving highest priority to the security. The main entrance is known as 'Delhi Darwaja', others have named like Ganesh, Mastani, Jambhal, Khidki.
There is a statue of Bajijrao (1 st) on a horse in the ground in front of Shaniwar Wada. Inside one can see Ganesh Mahal, Rang Mahal, Aarsa (Mirror) Mahal, Hasti Dant (Elephant Tusk) Mahal, Diwan Khana, Fountains. Currently renovated & also have a light & music show. The main part left is nagarkhana which gives good inside view. This is an expansive palace with its impressive fountains and gardens. The palace was the seat of Peshwa power and later was destroyed by a fire in 1828. All that remains are the walls that fortified this palace, with their sturdy doors, studded with spikes for added protection. Nearby is a street where the Peshwas unleashed elephants to trample dissidents to death.

Nationality - Indian Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen �A. P. J.� Abdul Kalam was a scientist and engineer, who served as the President of India from 2002 to 2007. Already a highly accomplished and much respected individual when elected to be the president, Kalam had spent four decades as a scientist and science administrator at several prestigious organizations like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Born into a family of humble means in Tamil Nadu, Kalam went on to study aerospace engineering in Madras Institute of Technology. His initial dream was to become a fighter pilot but he failed to qualify for the Indian Air Force. He then started working at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a scientist and was later transferred to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Eventually he was appointed as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and in this position he played a key role in the Pokharan II nuclear tests. He became the President of India in 2002 and was known as the People's President. He left the office after serving one term and became professor of Aerospace Engineering at Anna University and a visiting professor at several other institutions.

Childhood & Early Life Abdul Kalam was born as the youngest of five children of a Muslim boat owner named Jainulabudeen and his wife Ashiamma, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. His ancestors had once been wealthy traders though his family lost much of its fortunes by the early 20th century. Kalam grew up in humble surroundings and had to take up a job while he was still in school in order to augment his family�s meager income�he distributed newspapers to help his father in providing for the family. He was a bright young boy, blessed with a thirst for knowledge and was always eager to learn new things. He completed his schooling from Ramanathapuram Schwartz Matriculation School and proceeded to study physics at the Saint Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli, from where he graduated in 1954. Then he studied aerospace engineering in Madras Institute of Technology, graduating in 1960. His childhood ambition was to become a fighter pilot but he narrowly missed achieving his dream.

Career at DRDO After completing his studies he joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a scientist. One of the first projects he worked on was to design a small helicopter for the Indian Army. He also got the opportunity to work with the renowned space scientist, Vikram Sarabhai as a part of the INCOSPAR committee. However, Kalam was not much satisfied with his career at the DRDO.

Career at ISRO Kalam was transferred to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1969 as the project director of India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III). An expandable rocket project on which he had started working independently in 1965 got the government�s approval for expansion in 1969. Over the next several years he developed the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and SLV-III projects, both of which proved to be successful. In the 1970s he also worked on the development of ballistic missiles from the technology of the successful SLV program and directed the projects Project Devil and Project Valiant which were aimed at producing a short-range surface-to-air missile. Even though the projects were discontinued in 1980 without achieving full success, they earned Kalam great respect and admiration from the scientific fraternity.

Return to DRDO In 1980s, the government decided to initiate an advanced missile program under his directorship and thus the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) was launched with Kalam as the chief executive. The program which aimed at the research and development of a comprehensive range of missiles started in 1982-83. Under the able guidance of Kalam, several missiles including Agni, an intermediate range ballistic missile and Prithvi, the tactical surface-to-surface missile, were developed.

Presidency Kalam stood for presidency in 2002 and easily won the 2002 presidential election. He had the support of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Indian National Congress and was sworn in as the 11th president of the Republic of India on 25 July 2002. He was the first scientist to occupy Rashtrapati Bhawan. He was a popular president who was much respected by the citizens of the country. However, he was also criticized for his inaction in deciding the fate of the majority of the mercy petitions submitted to him during his tenure. He also kindled controversy with his decision to impose President's Rule in Bihar in 2005. At the end of his term he decided not to contest the Presidential election again and stepped down on 25 July 2007.

Post-Presidency After leaving the president�s office he became the chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Thiruvananthapuram and professor of Aerospace Engineering at Anna University. He also became a visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and the Indian Institute of Management Indore, and taught information technology at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.

As an Author Abdul Kalam was also a noted author who had penned books like �India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium� (1998), �Wings of Fire: An Autobiography� (1999), �Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power Within India� (2002), and �A Manifesto for Change: A Sequel to India 2020� (2014).

Awards and Honors A. P. J. Abdul Kalam has been honored with several prestigious awards from the Government of India including the Padma Bhushan in 1981, the Padma Vibhushan in 1990, and the Bharat Ratna in 1997. He was also the recipient of the Von Braun Award (2013) from the National Space Society "to recognize excellence in the management and leadership of a space-related project". Following his death, the Tamil Nadu state government announced that his birthday, 15 October, would be observed across the state as "Youth Renaissance Day".

Personal Life Kalam was a life-long bachelor. He had four elder siblings�one sister and three brothers�with whom he had close relations. He was a very simple person with just a few personal possessions.

Death He remained active until the last day of his life. He was scheduled to deliver a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong on 27 July 2015. Only five minutes into his lecture, he collapsed and was rushed to the Bethany Hospital where he was confirmed dead of a sudden cardiac arrest. His last rites were performed in his hometown, Rameswaram.

Gold tumbles Rs 175 on global cues, silver plunges too

NEW DELHI: Driven down by weak cues from the global market and slack demand from jewellers, gold extended its slide for the second straight day as prices plunged Rs 175 to Rs 25,775 per 10 grams at the bullion market on Tuesday.

Silver slipped below the Rs 35,000-mark by falling Rs 575 to Rs 34,425 per kg on reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers.

Bullion traders said a weak trend in the global market, which stemmed from expectations of a US rate hike this month, kept up pressure.
Furthermore, a muted demand from jewellers and retailers pulled down gold prices, they said.

Globally, gold fell 0.2 per cent to USD 1,069.90 an ounce in Singapore while it closed 1.39 per cent lower at USD 1,071.20 an ounce in New York on Monday.

Besides, a sluggish demand from jewellers and retailers at the domestic spot market dampened sentiment, they said.

In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity tumbled Rs 175 each to Rs 25,775 and Rs 25,625 per 10 grams, respectively. It had shed Rs 50 on Monday.

Sovereign, however, held steady at Rs 22,200 per piece of eight grams.

Tracking gold, silver ready broke below the Rs 35,000- level by falling Rs 575 to Rs 34,425 per kg, with weekly-based delivery slumping Rs 585 to Rs 34,600 per kg.

Silver coins also plummeted by Rs 1,000 to Rs 47,000 for buying and Rs 48,000 for sale of 100 pieces.

Kinetic appoints Suresh Balakrishna as CEO India, South Asia

MUMBAI: Out-of-home advertising agency Kinetic, which is part of the WPP group, has appointed Suresh Balakrishna as Chief Executive Officer for India, the Middle East and South Asia.

Balakrishna will be joining Kinetic in January 2016, and will be reporting to Kinetic Worldwide Global chief executive officer Mauricio Sabogal, the company said in a statement.

He joins Kinetic from IPG Mediabrands' Initiative and Brand Programming Network (BPN).
Balakrishna was integral in bringing BPN to India and also making a big impact in growing the Mediabrand's Out of Home business across the country, the statement said.

Toyota to hike vehicle prices by up to 3% from January

NEW DELHI: Japanese auto major Toyota will hike prices of its vehicles across all models in India by up to 3 per cent fromJanuary to offset rising input costs and unfavourable foreign exchange fluctuation.

The company, which is present in India through a joint venture with the Kirloskar group — Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) — is, however, yet to finalize the details on the quantum of hike on individual models.

"We have been holding back a price hike and absorbing for a long time, but input costs, electricity, maintenance and foreign exchange have increased. Therefore, we have decided to increase prices of our vehicles from January," TKM director and senior vice-president, sales and marketing, N Raja told PTI.
When asked about the quantum of hike, he said: "We are still finalizing the details, but it will be up to 3 per cent."

TKM sells a range of vehicles from compact car Liva with price starting at Rs 5 lakh to Land Cruiser tagged at Rs 1.29 crore (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).

Already German luxury car makers Mercedes Benz and BMW have announced that they would increase prices of their vehicles across models by up to 2 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively, from January to offset rising input costs.

Ancient Egyptian art includes arts such as architecture, sculpture, and painting produced in Egypt from about 3000 BC to 100 AD. Egyptian artists used stone, wood, paintings, and drawings on papyrus in producing their artworks. Sculpture and painting, which were both symbolic and highly stylized, reached a particularly high level during this time. Much of the surviving art comes from monuments, on which were recorded past events, and tombs, in which scenes relating to Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife were shown.

Symbolism was used extensively in Egyptian art, and included such things as a pharaoh's regalia (used to show his power), and symbols of animals, and Egyptian gods and goddesses. The colors used in the artwork were more symbolic than natural, and were used to represent stylized aspects of the figures being portrayed. Another characteristic of Egyptian art was using the size of the figures being portrayed to indicate their relative importance. Usually gods and pharaohs are the largest figures, while other figures become increasingly smaller as their importance decreases. Egyptian art changed very little over the 3000 years that it was produced.

Egyptian reliefs were not always painted, and many less important works that were painted were simply painted on a flat surface. Some higher-quality limestone could be painted on directly, but other stone surfaces were prepared by whitewash, or a layer of coarse mud plaster with a smoother top layer. Mineral pigments (which would not fade in strong sunlight) were normally used. True fresco (i.e. painting on wet plaster) was not used. The paint was applied to dried plaster, with a resin or varnish often used as a protective coating. Many of these paintings that were not exposed to the elements have survived because of Egypt's very dry climate. Even many paintings that had some exposure to the elements have survived quite well, but those that were fully exposed to the weather seldom survived.

Many of the surviving paintings were found in tombs, where they were well protected from the elements. These paintings were usually meant to help make a pleasing afterlife for the deceased. Many of the themes of the paintings included a representation of the journey through the afterworld, protective gods introducing the deceased to the underworld gods (who would, presumably, protect them in the afterlife), and activities that the deceased wished to continue in the afterlife.

Monumental Egyptian sculpture is known throughout the world, and most of the larger works that have survived are from tombs and temples. Huge stone statues were made to represent gods, and pharaohs and their queens. These were frequently placed in open areas inside or outside temples. Many temples had roads lined with large statues which included sphinxes and other animals. Quite a few large wooden statues of rich administrators and their wives have also survived to the present (due to Egypt's dry climate), along with very high quality smaller stone sculptures. These smaller stone figures were often made using a method called 'sunk relief' (which is a type of relief where the highest points of the carved figures are level with, or below, the original surface into which they are carved, making the figure appear sunken into the surface), which is especially suitable for use in bright sunlight.

Plaster gauze is nothing but regular gauze cloth that contains plaster powder. It is soaked in water to activate the plaster before applying on the body part where the bone has broken. Successive strips are applied until the entire area is covered with multiple layers. The plaster in the gauze dries quickly and hardens to form a stiff cast that immobilizes the limb and also holds the broken bones in place.
