Regular exercise, a healthy diet, avoiding excess alcohol and stress, and not smoking are well known factors that can contribute to this healthy lifestyle.

Importance of good nutrition

Good nutrition is vitally important. It is needed for normal growth and development. ONce mature, we need to continue to eat well in order to maintain our health and help promote resistance to infection.

What is a healthy balanced diet?

We have all heard the term "balanced diet" but what exactly does it mean? A balanced diet is one that contains a variety of foods each day. By eating the recommended number of portions from each food group daily you can help to ensure that you get a balanced range of nutrients in your diet, including all the major vitamins and minerals that your body needs. It is also important to ensure that you eat a diet which is high in fibre-rich carbohydrates as well as cutting down on fats, sugars and salt.

Vitamin and Mineral Sources
Fruits and Vitamins
Nutritive Value of Food
Diseases and its Symptoms
Ayurveda
Pregnancy Care

YOGA AND HEALTH

Yoga means balance in life style. Yoga is one where work is done with dexterity. It means whatever you do, the job should be exact, it should not be soft-padded or like a loosely filled bag: whatever you do, do it well, properly organized. When mind is alert and stays where the body is, the condition is termed Yoga. If you want to put a thread through the eye of a sewing needle, the thread will not be put through if the end of the thread is bent, left or right. The end will have to be made one pointed. Whether it is individual or family job or society job or a public work, one has to be fully alert in performance of job on hand, then only the word Yoga will have carried its proper meaning: That is dexterity. If we say that body is the first and foremost instrument to obtain the absolute or even to carry out jobs either small or big in life easily and naturally, it is not enough. Body must have no disease. One should have sound health, satisfied mind, steady intellect and there should be desire in the subconscious mind to carry out job on hand perfectly. All these are essential.

Yoga means peace, plenty, prosperity, development, progress and establishment in permanent soul-consciousness. All those that are to contrary, means restlessness, down-fall and self-deception towards soul. Yogasana and Pranayama practice cast deep impression on all these systems. By the practice of Yogasana and Pranayama equanimity of mind is established in all difficult situations like need for control over emotions, control of anger, instability of mind, putting a stop on emotionalism, mental soundness, capacity to fight diseases etc. But the essential requirement is that, practice should be continuous and regular. With Yogasana, Pranayama and daily meditation common mass of people can avoid many problems of life.

YOGA VIDEO CLASS

Yoga Tips

What is Chicken Gunya?
Chikungunya is a virus carried by a gluttonous mosquito that has already dined on an infected person. The mosquito doesn't get sick but happily hosts the virus, nurturing it to greater strength before depositing some of the virus in the next victim. It can act as a reservoir for the virus. The mosquito first bites any animal or human being who is infected. Thus the mosquito becomes infected and it bites another animals or human being and the spread of the disease continues. It can never spread from human to human, as this disease is not contagious.Chickengunya is also called “BREAK BONE FEVER”.

Microwave Cooking
The microwave helps today's men and women facing time constraints, to prepare a variety of favourite delicacies in a faster and a simpler manner. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, women need a lot more iron when pregnant. And sometimes it's hard to get enough by eating alone. Ask your doctor if you need to take a daily prenatal vitamin or multivitamin.

Folic Acid
Get 400 micrograms (or 0.4 mg) of folic acid daily in your diet.According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, getting enough folic acid (or folate) reduces the chances of some birth defects

Eat a healthy diet.
Eat lot of fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains (such as whole-wheat breads or crackers). Eat plenty of calcium-rich foods (such as non-fat or low-fat yogurt, milk, and broccoli) that your baby needs for strong bones and teeth. If you live in areas where fruits and vegetables aren't in season, frozen vegetables are a good option. Avoid taking a lot of fatty foods (such as butter and fatty meats) to eat.

Let you gain a healthy, not excessive amount of weight.
Research shows that women who gain more than the recommended amount during pregnancy have an elevated risk of obesity. Check with your doctor to find out how much weight you should gain during pregnancy.

Make sure you get enough sleep (seven to nine hours every night).
Aches, pains, anxiety and bathroom runs keep many pregnant women awake at night. To get some sleep, try to eat any large meals at least three hours before going to bed, get some easy exercise (like walking) and avoid long naps during the day.

Get a handle on health problems.
Talk to your doctor about how your health problems can affect you and the baby. If you have diabetes, make sure to control your blood sugar levels. If you have high blood pressure, monitor it closely. If you are overweight, talk to the doctor about whether you should lose weight.

Donts

Avoid fish with lots of mercury in your diet.
Get correct information from your dietician on what fish to eat and what fish to avoid when you are pregnant.

Protect yourself from using chemicals.
Products including herbicides, pesticides, paint, stains, and some cleaning solutions may be harmful to your baby. If she must use these things, make sure she wears gloves, a mask, and keeps the room well-ventilated.

Don't clean or change a cat's litter box.
This could put you at risk for an infection called toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite that cats can carry in their feces. Toxoplasmosis can harm a fetus.

Don't take very hot baths, hot tubs, or saunas.
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, high temperatures can be harmful to the fetus, or causing the mother-to-be to faint.

Do not use scented feminine hygiene products.
Pregnant women should avoid scented sprays, sanitary napkins, and bubble bath. These products might irritate your vaginal area, and increase the risk of a urinary tract infection or yeast infection.

Discomforts During Pregnancy
Morning sickness.
Tiredness.
Leg cramps.
Constipation.
Hemorrhoids.
Urinating more often.
Varicose veins.
Moodiness.
Heartburn.
Yeast infections.
Stuffy nose.
Skin Changes
Keep Visiting http://ms-cook.blogspot.com

Fever is generally high grade and above 102 * F. It lasts for generally two days but the debility remains for days or weeks together. Fatigue and joints pain give rise to a lot of debility. Red bloodlike patches or maculopapular rashes are seen on limbs and trunk along with fever which resembles to dengue. Multiple joints pain or arthralgia makes it difficult for a patient to move around. So the patient has to take complete bed rest.

Chickengunya is diagnosed by a simple blood test done in pathology laboratory. As there are no specific drugs available for the treatment of Chickengunya, prevention is the best possible tool. Patient is advised complete bed rest. Drugs like Ibuprofen, naproxen, paracetamol are given to control aches and pains. Patient is advised to take lots of fluids orally. If this is not possible then IV fluids are given. Patient is advised to take a healthy balanced diet so that he recovers fast.

PREVENTION
Chickengunya is transmitted by mosquito bites so the most important thing is to avoid exposure to mosquitoes. This can be done by protecting the doors and windows by mosquito nets. Full sleeve shirts and pants should be worn. Stagnant water reservoir is the best breeding place for the mosquito. So such stagnation of water should not be allowed. House and surrounding areas should be kept clean and dry. Swimming pools if not in used, should be kept clean and dry. Mosquito repellents containing DEET should be applied on the body. Person who is infected with chickengunya should remain indoors only so as to limit his own exposure to mosquito and thus preventing its spread to other people.
Keep Visiting http://ms-cook.blogspot.com

It has both an urban cycle and a jungle cycle that relies on monkeys as carriers ('sylvatic cycle').The virus is introduced into the bloodstream via the saliva of the mosquito as it bites. The virus can then be transported around the body and reproduce itself in a variety of the body's cells, usually the liver, kidneys and blood vessels. In serious cases, these cells may become damaged themselves.
What are the symptoms of the disease?
The incubation period from infection to developing yellow fever is 3 to 16 days.
Mortality ranges from 5 per cent to 40 per cent. Some people do not develop a serious form of the disease. They may have no symptoms at all or just a mild influenza-like illness. In the actual full-blown disease there is: high fever generalised symptoms like violent headache, muscular pain, upset stomach and loss of fluid. The fever dies down after three to four days and the general condition improves. However, in about 15 per cent of cases the fever returns within 24 hours and a dangerous situation develops.
The danger signals :Various systems in the body are affected during this phase. Anaemia (lack of red blood cells) develops as well as liver inflammation, hepatitis and jaundice. The kidneys are also affected and bleeding from the mouth, nose and stomach may occur, which leads to blood in vomit and faeces.
The majority of patients who experience bleeding die in a short space of time.
_____________________________________________________________________
13.Gastro-oesophageal
Gastro-oesophageal reflux is a condition where the lower oesophageal sphincter (the muscular ring at the lower end of the oesophagus) is abnormally relaxed and allows the stomach's acidic contents to flow back or 'reflux' into the gullet (oesophagus). It can also cause heartburn. A painful or burning sensation in the upper abdomen or chest, sometimes radiating to the back (heartburn). The acid reflux may reach the pharynx (throat) and mouth. It is sour and may burn. A small number of patients have difficulties breathing and suffer from hoarseness because the refluxed fluid irritates the larynx and respiratory tract. Excess belching is common.
_____________________________________________________________________
14.What is a headache?
Headaches involve mild to severe pain in one or more parts of the head as well as the back of the neck. There are many different types of headache patterns and a variety of causes. While painful and annoying, the majority of headaches do not indicate a serious disorder and, in non-chronic cases, may be relieved by medicines and/or changes in lifestyle.
Headaches? There is no single cause of headaches. A number of causes have been identified which fall into two general categories.
Tension headache This type of headache results from contraction of head and neck muscles. It is the most common form of headache and accounts for 70 per cent of headaches. It can occur in people of either sex and at any age but it is most common in adults and adolescents.
_____________________________________________________________________
15.High Blood Pressure
The heart is a pump designed to force blood through our body. Blood is pumped from the heart through the arteries out to our muscles and organs. Pumps work by generating pressure. Put simply, too much pressure puts a strain on the arteries and on the heart itself. This can cause an artery to rupture or the heart to fail under the strain - in the worst case stopping altogether.
Blood pressure depends on a combination of two factors:
how forcefully the heart pumps blood around the body how narrowed or relaxed your arteries are. Hypertension occurs when blood is forced through the arteries at an increased pressure.Blood pressure is measured using two numbers. An example of this could be 'the blood pressure is 120 over 80', which is written as '120/80mmHg'.
The first figure is the systolic blood pressure - the maximum pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts (beats) and pushes blood out into the body. The second figure is the diastolic blood pressure. This is the minimum pressure in the arteries between beats when the heart relaxes to fill with blood. Because the height of a mercury column is used in blood pressure gauges, standard blood pressure readings are always written as so many 'millimetres of mercury', which is abbreviated to 'mmHg'. The systolic pressure is always listed first, then the diastolic pressure. A typical normal blood pressure reading would be 120/80 mmHg.
_____________________________________________________________________
16.Hypothyroidism?
The thyroid gland, located in the lower front of the neck, produces hormones that are extremely important for the regulation of the body's metabolism.
When the thyroid gland is unable to produce sufficient amounts of these hormones - thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) - then a large number of problems arise in all of the body's systems due to the decrease in the body's metabolism.
Hypothyroidism is more common among elderly people, especially women, and affects 1.5 to 2 per cent of people over the age of 60 years. However, the condition also occurs in younger patients.
Typical symptoms of decreased metabolism are:
decreased tolerance of cold environments depression and lethargy weight gain constipation dry, rough skin coarsening of the facial features and a deep voice thin, dry hair poor memory - among the elderly this may be the only symptom of decreased metabolism in severe cases, dementia.
_____________________________________________________________________
17.Pneumonia?
Pneumonia means that there is an infection or inflammation in the lung tissue. It can be caused by a lot of different micro-organisms - viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites that are too small to see - but it can also be caused by corrosive chemicals breathed into the stomach or toxic gases from a fire. Pneumonia is still a common disease. Many people die from it every year, most commonly women and people over the age of 70. The overall death rate due to pneumonia is currently 5 per cent.
_____________________________________________________________________
18.Nappy Rash
Nappy rash is very common - most babies will get it at some point. It is not usually a 'disease', but just an irritation of the skin. A wet or dirty nappy that has been left touching the skin for too long is the most common cause of nappy rash. This is especially true of children with diarrhoea. Human waste products can turn into ammonia if the nappy isn't changed for a long time. Waste products eat into the baby's skin, which can then start to sting.
A fungal infection due to dampness under the nappy also causes nappy rash. Everybody has fungi on their skin, but it only grows when conditions are right. This has nothing to do with bad hygiene. It is caused by dampness or changes in the skin conditions. A fungal infection can be quite unpleasant for the baby because it can sting the skin - especially when the baby wets or dirties its nappy.
The baby can also get a bacterial infection in the area where the nappy is. This can happen if there has been a small scratch on your baby's skin or if their skin has been weakened by a sustained rash, allowing bacteria to grow easily. The baby's skin will then be red, warm and swollen, and the baby may also get a fever. If your baby has these symptoms, you need to contact your doctor.
Other skin conditions, such as infantile eczema, will exacerbate your child's nappy rash. Untreated, the baby's skin falls off in big flakes, and pus-filled blisters may develop; the nappy dermatitis is also likely to spread beyond the nappy region.
_____________________________________________________________________

19.What is tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is a disorder involving inflammation of the tonsils. There are two tonsils, situated on either side of the back of the throat and they form part of the body's immune system. They, like the rest of the immune system, contain special cells to trap and kill bacteria and viruses travelling through the body. When the main site of infection is within the tonsils they swell, become red and inflamed and may show a surface coating of white spots.
Tonsillitis is extremely common in children and young people but it can occur at any age. The characteristics of the disease are pain in the throat and trouble swallowing.
Tonsillitis is usually a self-limiting condition, ie it gets better without treatment, and generally there are no complications. Whether due to viruses or bacteria, the infection is spread from person to person by airborne droplets, hand contact or kissing.
Symptoms: Pain in the throat (sometimes severe) that may last more than 48 hours and be associated with difficulty in swallowing. The pain may spread to the ears. The throat is reddened, the tonsils are swollen and may be coated or have white spots on them. Possibly a high temperature. Swollen lymph glands under the jaw and in the neck. Headache. Loss of voice or changes in the voice.
_____________________________________________________________________
20.What is toothache?
The most common cause of toothache, or pain in the region of the jaws and face, is pulpitis - inflammation of the pulp of the tooth. The short, sharp pains usually occur in response to hot, cold or sweet stimuli.
If left untreated, the pulp dies and becomes infected, leading to the formation of a dental abscess. The pain from a dental abscess tends to be in response to pressure on the tooth, and is throbbing and continuous.
What causes toothache? :Dental decay. A fracture of the tooth. A cracked tooth. This may be invisible and so can be difficult to diagnose. Irritation of the pulp following dental treatment. Regardless of how well it is done, dental treatment and the materials used to fill the tooth can sometimes cause pain later. An exposed tooth root, which can occur if the gums recede or are damaged by over-vigorous brushing.
The following problems can also cause symptoms similar to toothache, even though the teeth themselves may be free of disease:
an abscess in the gum (lateral periodontal abscess). ulceration of the gums (acute ulcerative gingivitis). ulceration of the soft tissues can sometimes be mistaken for toothache. inflammation of the gum around a tooth which is in the process of growing/breaking through (pericoronitis). inflammation of the sinuses (sinusitis) can be mistaken for toothache in the upper jaw.
_____________________________________________________________________

21.What is tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis is a disease caused by an infection with the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. First and foremost, tuberculosis is a disease of the lungs. However, the infection can spread via blood from the lungs to all organs in the body. This means that you can develop tuberculosis in the pleura (the covering of the lungs), in the bones, the urinary tract and sexual organs, the intestines and even in the skin.
Lymph nodes in the lung root and on the throat can also get infected.
Tuberculous meningitis is sometimes seen in newly infected children. This form of the disease is a life-threatening condition. After the tuberculosis bacteria have been inhaled they reach the lungs and, within approximately six weeks, a small infection appears that rarely gives any symptoms. This is called a primary infection.
After this, the bacteria can then spread through the blood. If you have a healthy immune system, in most cases the infection will remain dormant without doing any obvious harm. Months or even years later, however, the disease can become reactivated in different organs if the immune system is weakened. The lungs are the favourite place for the illness to strike.Typical signs of tuberculosis are:
chronic or persistent cough and sputum production. If the disease is at an advanced stage the sputum will contain blood. fatigue. lack of appetite. weight loss. fever. night sweats.
_____________________________________________________________________
22.What is typhoid fever?
Typhoid fever is an infectious feverish disease with severe symptoms in the digestive system in the second phase of the illness. Classic typhoid fever is a serious disease. It can be life-threatening, but antibiotics are an effective treatment. The disease lasts several weeks and convalescence takes some time. Typhoid fever is caused by an infection with the bacterium Salmonella typhi, which is only found in humans and may lead to serious illness.
When the bacterium passes down to the bowel, it penetrates through the intestinal mucosa (lining) to the underlying tissue. If the immune system is unable to stop the infection here, the bacterium will multiply and then spread to the bloodstream, after which the first signs of disease are observed in the form of fever. The bacterium penetrates further to the bone marrow, liver and bile ducts, from which bacteria are excreted into the bowel contents.
_____________________________________________________________________
24.Varicose veins
What is the difference between veins and arteries?
The heart pumps blood through the arteries to all parts of the body - the vital organs, the head, arms and legs. The blood is then spread through tiny vessels called capillaries which form a network . Later it is returned in increasingly large vessels - veins - which complete the circulation of blood back to the heart. The arteries are rather thick and elastic and their size constantly changes due to the fluctuating pressure which varies with the heartbeat. The veins, on the other hand, have very thin walls and have no elastic fibres. They are therefore unable to contract and push the bloodflow onwards. The veins are completely dependent on the functions of the surrounding muscles and the valves inside the veins helping the blood to flow in the right direction towards the heart.Varicose veins are permanently dilated (widened) and twisted veins. Although this can occur in any part of the body, it usually develops in the legs. Veins contain one-way valves every few inches to help the blood return to the heart against gravity. If these valves leak, then the increased pressure prevents the blood from draining properly. The valves may leak and fail because of previous vein disease, eg thrombophlebitis, pressure on the veins in the pelvis from pregnancy or other causes of raised pressure within the abdomen. Varicose veins come on with advancing age and are often no great inconvenience apart from being unsightly.
<IMG SRC="http://banners.copyscape.com/images/cs-bk-3d-234x16.gif" ALT="Page copy protected against web site content infringement by Copyscape" TITLE="Do not copy content from the page.
