India : Food Prices Fall

NEW DELHI – India's food inflation eased sharply in the week ended Jan. 29 as vegetable prices cooled, raising hopes of a rapid decline in price pressures.

The wholesale price index for food articles fell 2.8% to 186.9 from 192.2 the previous week, according to data issued Thursday by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The annual inflation rate dropped to 13.07% from 17.05% in the preceding week.

Vegetable prices in the week ended Jan. 29 were down 17% from the previous week, while onion prices were off 21%.

The data will temper expectations of more aggressive monetary tightening by the central bank, though economists expect some action will still be taken given that inflation remains high.

Government bond prices extended gains with the most-traded 8.13% bond due in 2022 last changing hands at 99.53 rupees ($2.19), compared with 99.45 rupees before the data release.

Namrata Padhye, an economist with IDBI Gilts, said the decline was due to various government measures aimed at boosting market supplies.

The federal government banned exports of onions, arranged for its imports and asked two state-backed cooperatives to sell the vegetable at subsidized rates while also urging provincial governments to clamp down on hoarders.

But there is still a risk of escalation in price pressures as global commodity prices are on the rise.

"The inflation worries are not yet out of the way as globally there is rising pressure on energy and food prices due to political uncertainty and natural calamities," she said.

Food prices in India spiraled as unseasonal rains late last year damaged some standing crops and choked market supplies.

Surging prices of onions, a staple in Indian cuisine, led to a public outcry and political protests against the government. Inflationary pressures have also intensified because growing prosperity has caused a shift in Indian dietary habits to high-protein foods.

But prices are now easing thanks to the government's steps and steadily replenishing market supplies due to good seasonal rainfall.

Apart from global commodity prices, risks to inflation also stem from non-food articles, which continue to see intense price pressure.

Prices of non-food articles rose 2.5% in the week to Jan. 29.

Economists said that, despite the easing in food prices, inflation still remains well above the central bank's comfort zone and will likely lead to more monetary tightening.

Samiran Chakrabarty, head of research at Standard Chartered Bank, expects the Reserve Bank of India to continue raising policy rates at its next two rate-setting meetings. Namrata Padhye of IDBI Gilts also expects a 0.25 percentage point increase by March.

All eyes are now on January's inflation data due Monday, which will give cues on the course the Reserve Bank of India may take.

The central bank has raised its lending and borrowing rates seven times since March 2010 as it struggles to bring inflation under control.

Thursday's data showed the index for primary articles fell 1.4% to 191.8 in the week to Jan. 29. It was up 16.24% from a year earlier after climbing 18.44% in the previous week.

India, Pakistan to resume talks

New Delhi: India and Pakistan have announced the resumption of talks in several areas at the level of ministers and secretaries.

Even though the two sides are not calling it the 'composite dialogue', talks will be held on many issues, paving the way for Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi's visit in July.

A statement released by both countries says that in their meeting in Thimphu, the Foreign Secretaries - Nirupama Rao and Salman Bashir - have agreed to resume dialogue on all issues, following the spirit of the Thimphu meeting between the two Prime Ministers.

Meetings at the level of respective Secretaries will be convened on counter-terrorism (including on Mumbai), humanitarian issues, peace and security, Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek and economic issues.

The Foreign Minister of Pakistan will visit India by July 2011 to review progress in the dialogue process with his counterpart.

Food inflation at 7 week low of 13.07 p.c.; further slide expected

Food inflation declined to a seven-week low of 13.07 per cent in end-January, as prices of potatoes and pulses eased, even as consumers continue to feel the pinch of high rates of vegetables.

Food inflation, which snapped the three-week rising trend, fell by nearly 4 percentage points from 17.05 per cent in the week ended January 22. It was 22.08 per cent a year-go.

The last time food inflation has come down to such a level was for the week ended December 11 when it stood at 12.13 per cent.

Experts said there would be further slide in inflation rates due to the expected record crop of wheat and pulses.

Government estimates suggest overall food grain production for 2010-11 at 232.07 million tonnes, against 218.2 million tonnes last year.

Wheat production is estimated to touch an all-time high of 81.47 million tonnes in 2010-11 crop year.

Pulses and cotton production are also projected to set fresh records of 16.51 million tonnes and 33.9 million bales, respectively.

“In the coming weeks we could expect further moderation in food prices, specially foodgrains. The expected record production of wheat and pulses will act as a factor in easing the food prices,” Crisil chief economist D K Joshi said.

However, the decline in food inflation is unlikely to show much impact on the headline inflation numbers for January, which is expected on February 14. The inflation in December stood at 8.43 per cent.

“The overall WPI inflation for January 2011 is expected at around 8.5 per cent, on back of high primary inflation,” ICRA economist Aditi Nayar said.

The decline in food inflation numbers is also unlikely to ease pressure on Reserve Bank, whose current monetary policy stance is anti-inflationary.

The apex bank had last month raised short term lending and borrowing rates by 25 basis points to tame rising prices.

During the week ended January 29, prices of pulses fell 8.63 per cent, potatoes by 8.87 per cent and wheat by 3.58 per cent on an annual basis, data released by the government showed.

Onion prices, which more than doubled in the previous week, have eased subsequently. However, the kitchen staple still remains dearer by 79 per cent for the week under review.

Last month, government pumped in 300 metric tonnes of imported onions and would bring in another 426 tonnes in the market soon.

Vegetables as a whole have turned costlier by 44.34 per cent on an annual basis during the week under review.

ICRA’s Nayar, however, said that vegetable prices are expected to ease in the coming weeks.

During the week, fruits and milk became costlier by 10.46 per cent and 11.66 per cent respectively, while egg, meat and fish turned expensive by 17.06 per cent.

Experts, however, said that high international crude prices may act as a dampener in moderating the headline inflation.

In its quarterly review last month, the RBI estimated that overall inflation would be around 7 per cent by March-end.

For the week ended January 29, “fuel and power” category prices shot up 11.61 per cent on an annual basis, while petrol became expensive by over 30 per cent.

“The Egypt situation has potential to affect inflation,” Joshi said, referring to the current impasse in the Arab nation where demonstrators have been on the streets since last month demanding immediate resignation of long-time ruler Hosni Mubarak.

There is apprehension that the political stalemate in Egypt could affect flow of crude through the Suez Canal, the world’s busiest commercial waterway.

Similar views have already been expressed by the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, senior government officials and the RBI deputy governor Subir Gokarn.

Chhattisgarh HC rejects Binayak Sen's bail application

NEW DELHI: The Chhattisgarh High Court on Thursday dismissed the bail application of civil rights activist Dr Binayak Sen, which the state government had opposed on the grounds of his links with the Maoists.

Sen is at present lodged in a jail in state capital Raipur following his sentencing to life term by a trial court on Dec 24 for sedition and over his links with Maoist ideologue Narayan Sanyal.

Additional Advocate General Kishore Bhaduri, representing the Chhattisgarh government, on Wednesday told the division bench of Justice T.P. Sharma and Justice R.L. Jhanwar, that Sen had strong links with the Maoists.

He said the seized documents and other evidence were sufficient for "not suspending the sentence awarded to him by the trial court".

"Sen is a doctor by profession. But during the search at his residence, we could not find the stethoscope, any medical paper or other materials that are usually found with doctors," the prosecution counsel argued.

"It's not just a simple case of a doctor engaged in social service," he told the court.

"The trial court has already convicted Sen on charges of sedition. The documents seized and the circumstances in totality qualify for the requirement for conviction on the charges of sedition," he said.

The prosecution counsel told the court that "Rupantar" - a social organisation with which Sen and his wife were closely associated - have a few members who have Maoist connections.

He sought to quote a statement by Maoist leader Gopanna in a case in Andhra Pradesh to point out that a few NGOs and social organisations have connection with the Maoists. "We have evidence to show that they are pampering them," he added.

The defence argued hat the statement of another convict Piyush Guha - from whom police seized some incriminating letters - could not be relied upon as credible evidence as he had made the statement while in police custody.

The prosecution said: "Guha was brought to the police station as he was found in possession of certain letters. During preliminary interrogation, he told the police that it was Sen who handed over Sanyal's letters to him."

"Guha's statement led the police to Sen. At the time when Guha made the statement, no first information report (FIR) was registered, hence it can't be said that he made the statement while in police custody," the prosecution argued.

The court reserved its order after Bhaduri concluded his arguments.

Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani Jan 24 argued for Sen's bail, highlighting loopholes in the trial court verdict.

He termed Sen's conviction as "a case of no evidence" and "political prosecution".

SC to govt : Set up special court for 2G scam

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the government to constitute a special court exclusively for dealing with 2G spectrum case.

The CBI will file the first chargesheet in 2G spectrum scam against former telecom minister A Raja and others under Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) for cheating and forgery by March 31, the Supreme Court was told.

The apex court said it favours a CBI probe that also covers culpability of beneficiaries of the scam as they are part of larger conspiracy.

Aarushi murder case - CBI files closure report

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) closed the Aarushi Talwar murder case, more than two-and-a-half years after the teenager was brutally murdered in Noida.

The closure report which was filed at a Ghaziabad court meant that all the three suspects in the case - Raj Kumar, Vijay Mandal and Krishna - will be set free. They are out on bail now.

A new team was constituted by the CBI to look into Aarushi case. The new investigation team could only recover Aarushi's mobile, which was put through forensic test but not much could be recovered.

The CBI in its closure case said the case has been damaged beyond repair and the crucial evidence handled badly.

Former laywer for Talwars was taken by surprise when he came to know that Aarushi case has been closed.

"Surprise that case has been closed. Haven''t seen content of the closure report, so wont be able to comment in detail," said former lawyer for Talwars Pinaki Mishra.

The Talwar family have decided to file an appeal against the closure report.

While speaking to media on Wednesday evening Talwars reacted, saying they are completely devastated and shocked with the news.

"Want justice for my daughter. We are broken parents today with the closure report," said Aarushi's mother Nupur Talwar.

Aarushi's father Rajesh Talwar said that CBI did not inform them about the closure of the case.

"I had requested the CBI to conduct DNA test from the spot of crime, but our request was not heeded. I got the news from TV channels that case has been closed, CBI didn't tell us about closure of the case. Whatever was asked to us, we did but don't know what CBI is doing," said Aarushi's father Rajesh Talwar.

"I am completely devastated, shocked. Don't know what to do. Aarushi has not got justice. We will continue to fight," said Rajesh Talwar.

On May 17, 2008: Aarushi Talwar, a 14-year-old school student and daughter of a dentist couple, was found dead with her throat slit in the bedroom of her flat in Jal Vayu Vihar in Noida. On the next day, domestic help Hemraj's body found on terrace of Talwar's residence. Former domestic help Vishnu Sharma was named as a suspect.

In a twist in the murder case, the Uttar Pradesh Police then arrested Arushi's father Rajesh Talwar on May 23, claiming they suspected this to be a case of honour killing,

The CBI which took over the probe, arrested Talwar's compounder Krishna on June 13.

Vijay Mondal, the domestic help of one of Talwar's neighbours was also later arrested by the CBI.

After spending 50 days in Jail, Rajesh Talwar was released. The arrest followed polygraph test and Narco Analysis test.

Tata’s Bombay House building Fire Blast : 3 killed

According to chief fire officer UK Tatkare, the fire broke out in the basement of the headquarters of the Tata Group in south Mumbai around 9.30 am today on Wednesday.

“The three people were trapped in the basement and succumbed while a fourth person was brought out in a serious condition, which has been moved to Sir JJ Hospital for treatment and two more people were rescued from the terrace of the building by fire officials as ten fire engines and four tankers have been rushed to the spot” Tatkare said.

CA - IPCC Results Nov 2010 will be Declared

ICAI will publish the results of IPCC November 2010 examination on Tuesday, 08 February 2011. The results will be available on www.caresults.nic.in and www.icai.org .

ICAI will announce the Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC) Results for the Professional Competence Examination (PCE) & Integrated Professional Competence Examination (IPCE) / Accounting Technician, MAC (Part-1), IRM and ITL & WTO examination held in November 2010 is likely to be published on Tuesday, 08 February 2011.

ICAI IPCC Result Nov 2010 will be declared online on Tuesday, 08 February 2011 at 01:43 P.M. at the main official websites of the Institute – www.caresults.nic.in and www.icai.org.

Students, who had appeared the ICAI IPCC Nov-2010 Examination, will get the result by just submit their roll number at www.caresults.nic.in.

JNU MMS scandal: Investigation in progress

One of the most prestigious universities in the country, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is in the news for the wrong reasons.

An MMS showing two hostelers in ‘compromising position’ has rocked the university, prompting the administration to investigate the scandal.

According to sources, the video was reportedly made to make money by exploiting the girl. The video was shot some 6 months back but came to the administration’s notice just a week back.

The man in the video is a student of Korean language in the university. Sources say the victim is married and settled.

Reports say the video was shot in a room in Tapti hostel in the campus. A third person was involved who made and distributed the CDs.

JNU chief proctor HB Bohidar is investigating the matter and the report is expected to be out by next week.

Novatium Ropes In Tata Sky Exec Anurag Agrawal As India CEO

Chennai based thin client manufacturer Novatium Solutions Private Ltd, which counts New Enterprise Associates and Ericsson as investors, has inducted former Tata Sky executive vice-president Anurag Agrawal as its India CEO. (Thin clients are slim versions of PCs that require to be connected to a server to operate. They depend on SaaS applications, and are not as powerful as desktop PCs.)

Alok Singh, the global CEO and MD of Novatium, said, “Anurag with his strong leadership skills and rich sales and marketing experience is the perfect choice to lead Novatium as it enters a phase of rapid growth in a dynamic market such as India.”

Singh is also on the board of directors along with Ray Stata, Chairman of Analog Devices Inc, Rajesh Jain, MD of Netcore Solutions and Dr Ashok Jhunjhunwala, founder of the TeNet Group that incubated Novatium. Recently, Ericsson invested in a strategic minority stake in Novatium while New Enterprise Associates is also an investor in the firm.

“Novatium’s cutting edge products and superior technology have made it a runaway success. I am delighted with the opportunity to lead Novatium in this exciting and dynamic new age business and look forward to working with the team,” said Agrawal.

As Tata Sky executive VP (sales & service), Agrawal headed sales, service and customer lifecycle management for North and East India and rolled out its retail chain of over 1500 stores. Prior to this, he headed broadband operations planning for Reliance Infocomm (now RCOM), and was employed at ICICI Bank, Spice Communications and Hutch Essar. He is an IIM Lucknow alumnus.
