It features the world's best cricketers playing - their affiliation decided by open auction - for eight city-based franchises, owned by a host of businessmen and celebrity consortiums. The inaugural edition of the tournament will run from April 18 to June 1.
What are the logistics of the IPL?
The tournament will begin on April 18, when Bangalore take on Kolkata at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The tournament will feature 59 matches in total, the teams playing each other on a home-and-away basis. Click here for the full list of fixtures.
Why is the IPL generating such a buzz?
Two main reasons why. One the football-club concept of the IPL, which is unlike anything cricket has known. The best players from across the world playing not according to nationality but according to market forces. Second, the sheer financial scale of the IPL is unprecedented at this level of cricket. The BCCI has already made close to US$ 1.75 billion solely from the sale of TV rights ($908 million), promotion ($108 million) and franchises (approximately $700 million). Players are expected to earn close to US$1 million for a three-year contract. It's an entire cricket economy out there.
Who are the top cricketers involved?
There are 77 names in the fray, the top current players: Dhoni, Ponting, Gilchrist, Shoaib Akhtar, Jayawardene, Jayasuriya, Yuvraj, Hayden...The notable absentees are from England, because the IPL will clash with their domestic season, and Australia's Michael Clarke, who opted to focus on his regular cricket.
Who are the franchise owners - celebrities and others?
Mukesh Ambani, the Reliance Industries chairman, acquired the Mumbai franchise for $111.9 million over a 10-year period; beer and airline baron Vijay Mallya, who also owns a Formula 1 team, won the Bangalore franchise for $111.6 million; Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment won the Kolkata franchise for $75 million; the biggest surprise was the Chandigarh franchise, which went to Preity Zinta, another Bollywood star, and Ness Wadia, together with two other industrialists, for $75 million. The winning team will get richer by $3 million if they win the first edition of the tournament.
How are the players paired with teams?
The BCCI will conduct a player auction on February 20, in which the respective franchises can bid for a maximum of eight international players from pool of 89 players who have been contracted to the board. But Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, and Yuvraj Singh are not up for auction as they have been given 'iconic' status by the BCCI - which means that they have to represent the city in which they are based. Another exception to the bidding process is with regard to the Australian players - a clause in the rules of Cricket Australia has meant that each team can select a maximum of two Australians.
Who were the top draws at the IPL's player auction on February 20?
India's Twenty20 captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Australia allrounder Andrew Symonds were the big buys at the auction in Mumbai, with the Chennai franchise buying Dhoni for US$1.5 million and Hyderabad bidding successfully for Symonds at US$1.3 million. India's young stars Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary together fetched nearly US$3 million. But Australian legends Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath were not so lucky as Jaipur bagged the legspinner for US$450,000 and Delhi took home McGrath for his base price of US$350,000.
Who will coach the eight IPL teams?
The IPL has lured some of the top names in the business with three Australians, one South African and one New Zealander signing up as coaches. Kolkata roped in former Australia coach John Buchanan and Mohali signed up former Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody, while Delhi recruited Victoria coach Greg Shipperd. Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe was the big surprise for Bangalore before Chennai announced that they had bagged former South Africa captain Kepler Wessels as coach. India's fielding coach Robin Singh will coach Hyderabad and Jaipur named Shane Warne as their captain and coach while Mumbai are yet to reveal their cards.
Whose idea is the IPL?
The IPL is the brainchild of Lalit Modi, the vice-president of the BCCI, and is modeled along the lines of club football in Europe, specifically the English Premier League. Though there is a school of thought that the idea came about in the 1990s, the announcement that such a tournament would happen, and which it would be a precursor to Twenty20 Champions League, cricket's version of the European Champions League, came only after Subhash Chandra, the owner of Zee Televison said, in April last year, that he was intending to start an unofficial league called the Indian Cricket League, fuelling speculation that is was a reactive idea rather than a proactive one.
How different are the IPL and ICL to each other?
The IPL is an official sanctioned Twenty20 tournament, and unlike the ICL, which is not recognised by any of the national boards or the ICC, it will have a better status, international reach, players, and the requisite infrastructure by default. Since the IPL is sanctioned by the ICC, players don't have the danger of bringing their international/first-class careers to a halt - as is the case with the ICL - whose players have been banned by the various boards. Another major difference is with regard to franchises - the ownership of the team rests with the individual owners and not one single entity.

Warne to lead, coach Jaipur in IPL
Retired Australian leg-spin genius Shane Warne has been named captain and coach of the Jaipur team in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League, the franchise announced on Wednesday.
Read this complete story

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>Warne to lead, coach Jaipur in IPL Retired Australian leg-spin genius Shane Warne has been named captain and coach of the Jaipur team in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League, the franchise announced on Wednesday. The bid for the rights was won by DLF Ltd, one of India's leading real estate developers, and the tournament will be formally known as the DLF Indian Premier League.

DLF narrowly edged out the World Sports Group (WSG), bidding on behalf of the motorcycle company Hero Honda Motors (India) Ltd, Percept D'Mark and 21st Century Media. Incidentally, the Singapore-based WSG, in consortium with India's Sony Television network, secured the television rights for ten years at a cost of more than US$1 billion.

"The title sponsorship race was tightly contested between three participants, with DLF emerging the final winner through a fair and transparent process," Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman and commissioner, said. "We had a minimum bid price of Rs 125 crore (around US$31.5m). We are very happy with the bid we got.

"I am truly happy to have DLF as our title sponsors as they share a common vision with the BCCI to make the Indian Premier League one of finest cricketing leagues in the world.
"It is exciting to have an eclectic mix of elite Indian businessmen, Bollywood personalities and corporates as our allies, working collectively to ensure the success of the IPL."

The focus will now be on the player auctions scheduled for February 20, with the eight franchises fighting it out over a player pool that includes more than 80 international cricketers who have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The minimum bidding amount for a pool of contracted players in each franchise team has been fixed at US$3m and the maximum cap at US$5m. The IPL has already named Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Rahul Dravid as icon players, making them unavailable for any other side other than their city teams.
There have been concerns over the participation of Australian players in the tournament, with Cricket Australia having expressed reservations over sponsor protection. However, Australian players such as Andrew Symonds and Ricky Ponting are high on the wishlist of several franchises.

The inaugural edition of the IPL, which lasts for 44 days, is scheduled to kick off on April 18 and features a 56-game league phase followed by the semi-finals and final in Mumbai.

Rafique invited to join Bollywood star's team

Top Bangladeshi spinner Mohammad Rafique said he had received an offer to join Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's team for the inaugural Twenty20 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Read this complete story

Gilchrist plays down IPL fears

The Twenty20 Indian Premier League would not cause players to retire from international cricket early to take advantage of the money on offer, Australian star Adam Gilchrist said.

Read this complete story

Lee keen on IPL Twenty20

Pace bowler Brett Lee added his voice to the growing chorus of Australian players keen to play in the inaugural Twenty20 Indian Premier League in April.

Read this complete story

IPL :Billion Dollar Baby

If you thought cricket was big, wait for this. The IPL promises to be bigger than anything India has ever seen. We give the inside-out of this billion-dollar baby…

What is the Indian Premier League?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched the Indian Premier League (IPL) on September 14, 2007. Based on the lines of the English Premier League (EPL) and the National Basketball League (NBA), the IPL is said to be the brainchild of BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi. The idea was first floated in 1996 but was shot down as the board felt it would go against the zonal system of domestic cricket. The project moved into top gear when the Zee group launched a rival Indian Cricket League on similar lines in April 2007.

Who are the franchisees?

The franchisees will own the eight teams in the fray. They can run them in their own styles, bring their own sponsors and even name the team according to their choice. They will even be free to list their teams on the stock exchange.
How is it different from the football and hockey leagues in India?
The IPL, in a way, is not very different in its format vis-a-vis the PHL or the I-League in football. It is, however, totally different in its concept as the teams have been offered to franchisees (individuals or corporates) through a bidding process that culminated on Thursday. The BCCI has already signed up 80 international players who will also be put for auction soon.

When will the IPL matches be played and where?

Under lights, on a home and away basis, in the cities that have formed the teams. The league opens on April 18 and will see 59 matches spread over 44 days

What kind of money is involved in IPL?

The overall prize money will be US $5 million, with the winners taking home $2 million. The remaining will be up for grabs in different forms, like man of the match awards and cash prizes. By contrast, the winners of the 2007 ICC World Cup in the Caribbean took home $1 million; the Indian team that won the World Twenty20 got half of that. TV rights have already gone for over $1 billion. Franchisees have already committed close to US $723 million. Top players are expected to earn minimum 1-2 crores per season.

What is already in place for IPL?

With the league scheduled for April 2008, the IPL has so far sold the eight teams to corporate houses and signed leading players. Indian stars like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly will be called “icon players” and can play only for their respective cities. They will be the highest paid players and will not be auctioned. The bidding will take place next month.

Who owns the IPL TV rights?

Sony Entertainment, a division of Japan’s Sony Corp, and the Asia-based World Sports Group (WSG) won the broadcast rights for ten years, worth more than a whopping US $1 billion. TV rights are worth $918 million, with $100 million set aside for promotion.

Who will run the IPL?

BCCI has formed an IPL council that comprises former BCCI president IS Bindra, vice-presidents Rajiv Shukla, Chirayu Amin, Lalit Modi and Arun Jaitley, and former cricketers Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri. While the BCCI officials are honorary members, Pataudi, Gavaskar and Shastri will be paid for their services. The IPL governing council will have a five-year term and will run, operate and manage the league independently of the BCCI.

The winning bids

Vijay Mallya - US $111.6 million, for the Bangalore team.

Shah Rukh Khan - US $75.09 million, for the Kolkata team.

GMR Holdings - US $84 million, for the Delhi team.

Mukesh Ambani - US $111.9 million, for the Mumbai team.

India Cements - US $91 million, for the Chennai team.

Deccan Chronicle - US $107.01 million, for the Hyderabad team.

Emerging Media - US $67 million, for the Jaipur team.

Preity Zinta - US $76, for the Mohali team.

India supersizes the game

Come April and May, when the smothering heat of the sub-continent becomes unbearable, the world's top cricketers will flock to India for a billion-dollar extravaganza billed as the future of the game.

Read this complete story

India's Twenty20 League sold for a billion dollars

India's cricket chiefs on Monday sold the media rights for the star-studded inaugural Twenty20 Indian Premier League for one billion dollars.

Read this complete story
