Ferguson recently completed an extensive showroom expansion at the IDC to include their appliance gallery. Within this new space is a large selection of the high-end appliances that Ferguson is known for, along with vignettes that truly inspire homeowners using new technologies combined with beautiful finishes. “Our wine bar is a popular new display area, showcasing what we have to offer in custom home bar design;’ says Natalie Gertiser, senior showroom manager at Ferguson Home. The display shows a choice of several brands that offer bespoke wine and spirits refrigeration. The options range from standard under-counter refrigeration to full-size wine columns with specifically calibrated zones for different varietals. These can be customized with glass doors, pull-out shelving, and drawers to showcase a wine collection and make selecting a bottle easier.

The new display area also has built-in wine and spirits dispensers that may not be able to replace a bartender, but it can streamline any party. The glass-fronted design holds four bottles at a time for a simple selection. Wallpaper in a small space is a way to incorporate pattern, but without having to commit to the sometimes prohibitive cost of the product or installation that a larger room would demand. A bold patterned wall covering in a small space brings the room alive, rather than making it feel small, like some would tend to believe. “We love using a patterned wallpaper in a powder bath. The color and pattern offer an unexpected surprise,” says Wendy Langston, owner of Everything Home. A large scale floral can transform a room by incorporating interesting places for the eye to travel to, while also introducing different colors into the design scheme of the room.

Another way to introduce color and pattern into a bathroom is with drapery. A considered shade on the window that provides patterns and privacy is essential, but layered shower curtains are another opportunity to increase the style and sophistication in a utilitarian space. In a recent project, Drapery Street designer Cricket Turner created a custom Roman shade with narrow green stripes on the bathroom window to echo the colors used in the room and the larger scale stripes int he curtains hung on the shower. “The tailored style of the Roman shade plays nicely with the more voluminous double curtains used for the shower,” says Turner. The selections play up the tension between the differing styles, pulling together all the other patterns int he room, including the floor and shower tile.

Ferguson Bath Kitchen and Lighting Gallery is now Ferguson Home, and their newly re-opened showroom is a must-see when visiting the IDC. The recent expansion of their two-story showroom folds in the Ferguson Appliance Gallery (formerly on 96th St.), creating 22,000 square feet of showroom space. “Having all of our resources under one roof is so helpful, it really enables us to offer an integrated customer experience,” says Natalie Gertiser, Ferguson Home’s Showroom Manager. The showroom name change reflects the desire to unify all platforms of the business, both digital and in-person.

Le Peep has also undergone a name change to Maple, serving classic breakfast & brunch. The ownership and staff have remained the same, but have debuted a new name and a more streamlined menu. The rebrand, moving away from a national franchise, references Indiana’s history as a leading maple syrup producer. “We are excited to announce our new concept, Maple. Our team wanted to create something truly local, and highlight the rich history of Indiana,” says Ali Hessaraki, owner of Maple.

And finally, Open Gate is set to move to the first floor of the IDC in the next several months. The move, from IDC’s second floor, brings another design/retail offering to the main floor, offering a customized selection of furniture and accessories. Savs Michael Hansen, owner of Open Gate, “This is a great growth opportunity, enabling us to serve both design clients as well as the more casual client that appreciates good design.

Many people’s design tastes fall in the middle of maximalist/minimalist spectrum, somewhere in between a color explosion and a blank slate. Clean lines and neutral fabrics in big-ticket items like sofas, tables and drapery are a safe bet and offer an easy way to invest in heirloom pieces. Unique light fixtures in metals and natural materials add a focal point that complements the overall design, and these elements combined create a thoughtfully considered canvas in which to add color and pattern.

Textured and colorful throw pillows, area rugs and accents can add drama and interest in a beautiful way, but, says Lord, “Original artwork can transform the look and feel of a room. It can also be a great place to start with inspiration to help guide your vision for the project.” Colors and patterns in artwork can be evoked in many different ways throughout the room.

A colorful patterned wallpaper offers an enormous amount of impact as well. A room with neutral furniture and lighting becomes something completely different with the addition of wallpaper. “A whimsical pattern or a favorite color in a wallpaper can accentuate or contrast the tones and textures of the rest of the room,” says Lord. A grasscloth or small-scale pattern would also be an intentional way to add texture and color without the busy-ness of a pattern. Even adding some additional seating in a room can make a difference for functionality. “We have seen a lot of small seating areas added to kitchen spaces, offering a place for conversations between guests and whoever is prepping food,” says Hansen.

The first step would be to consider the look and feel of the new room. A designer can help select the right paint colors or wallpaper that evoke the feel you are trying to convey. As the days lengthen and the sun begins to shine in, we start thinking about spring cleaning and airing out our homes. Clear and shiny windows and open, uncluttered spaces call for fresh window treatments in the latest styles. Draperies and shades are classic in nature, but Drapery Street in the Indiana Design Center can create a look custom to your particular aesthetic.

Prints and patterns have been gaining in popularity over the past few years, with the surge of maximalism and more common use of wallpaper. While that trend continues to keep pace, the prints used in current designs have grown larger in scale, creating interest and contrast. Stripes, herringbone, geometric shapes and florals are all favorites. “These prints are not only stylish, but some of these patterns, like vertical stripes, for example, can create the illusion of a taller ceiling,” says Caryn O’Sullivan, owner of Drapery Street.

Quiet luxury, both in fashion and in interior design, has become a new way to describe a high-end, tailored look that is both timeless and elegant.
