Control the entire Internet data stream

Network Composer Version 8 promises the most robust Internet data stream controls available to small and medium-sized businesses. On average 15% - 25% of Internet browsing and application activity is done over secure connections (SSL and HTTPS). Over the next 18 months, SSL/HTTPS traffic will increase to over 54%. While built to protect data travelling across the Internet, this traffic presents an unchecked challenge to administrators. If Internet policy controls cannot see the content within a secure connection, they're unable to verify that the activity complies with policy, is clean of threats and does not negatively impact mission critical traffic. Version 8 provides administrators with control over SSL and HTTPS activity in a secure environment that also protects private data.

Content Control

Full SSL Decrypt/Recrypt
Network Composer Version 8 provides administrators with complete content filtering and traffic control over SSL and HTTPS activity. With Version 8, Network Composer can terminate SSL connections, check activity in a secure environment, enforce policy and track browsing activity. The SSL inspection is completely transparent in the network so unlike SSL proxies it does not require any client web browser configurations.

SSL Filtering
With full SSL decrypt/recrypt capabilities, Network Composer makes it easy to enforce Internet usage policies. Simply select "Enable full SSL content filtering" and Network Composer will apply Internet Usage Rules to SSL traffic.

SSL Filtering with Denied Access Page
Unlike other SSL blocking devices, Network Composer Version 8 will actually serve up a denied access page for users that violate policy via SSL/HTTPS.

SSL Reporting
Version 8 gives you quick access to reports on secure browsing activity. View content reports by all activity, non-SSL activity and SSL activity.

Basic Proxy Mode
For users that cannot have an inline filtering device or that want to provide filtering for remote VPN users, Network Composer with Version 8 can now work as a robust proxy filtering device. Simply point browser settings to Network Composer and it will enforce your policies.

Wireless WANs: Going Beyond Wi-Fi

Are you ready to move beyond Wi-Fi and being tied to a hotspot? How would you like to use the internet and access your office network infrastructure from virtually anywhere? Welcome to the world of WWANs (wireless wide area networks). With WWANs, you can access the internet, critical network resources and home office files from the front seat of your car, the airport, the local coffee shop, or your recliner at home ...without being restricted to the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot.
If you're one of those people who spends a lot of time away from your home or office but needs access to everything back at your desk, a WWAN is the way to go. WWANs extend the range of your wireless mobile devices, such as a Sony VAIO® notebook computer, enabling you to have wireless Internet access whenever and wherever you go. You'll learn all about WWANs in this article.

How WWANs Work
A WWAN uses long-range wireless connections -- the same networks as cellular phones -- to provide access across a large geographic area. In comparison, a WLAN (wireless LAN) covers only one or more buildings located close together. The use of wireless connectivity on a WLAN is simply an alternative to the PSTN (public switched telephone network), which you may have used -- or still use -- to dial into your ISP (Internet service provider) or reach your company's network.

On a WWAN, however, you use wireless connectivity to reach your carrier's data network instead of plugging into a phone jack and dialing into your ISP. Each mobile device communicates with the public carrier's base station, providing coverage across entire states, regions, and countries via cell phone towers.

When you use the built-in wireless capabilities of a Sony VAIO® Notebook computer, for example, you connect to a base station on a wireless network. A radio tower carries the signal to a mobile switching center, which passes the data to your provider's network. Data communications are then established with your network using the wireless carrier's connection to the Internet.

Note: Sony VAIO® computers use SmartWi™ technology to access the Cingular Wireless® national EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) network.

WWANs work in tandem with wireless devices that go beyond a single building. A public carrier, such as the Cingular Wireless® national EDGE network, may operate one or more WWANs.

Taking Your Information Beyond the Great Beyond

Using a WWAN, you can query a database back at the office and check inventory or prices while visiting your customer's site -- all without wires. As mentioned previously, this connectivity occurs via cellular networks. Examples of these cellular networks are CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data), CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), and GSM (Global Systems for Mobile Communications).

Note: Cingular's EDGE technology is a software enhancement for GPRS. EDGE enables true 3G (third generation) wireless data connections, with data speeds that are generally three times faster than GSM/GPRS networks.

Understanding WWAN Speeds

Based on the technology used, WWAN speeds differ. For example, GPRS networks offer a maximum user data rate of about 115 Kbps (kilobits per second). However, as currently supported by most networks, you can expect a consistent and realistic data rate of 30 to 60 Kbps. EDGE can support peak data rates up to 170 kilobits per second with average data rates of 75 to 135 Kbps.

The Future of WWANs

In the next few years, the data speeds of WWANs are expected to increase to a whopping 384 Kbps. This increase in speed is expected to result in a terrific increase in productivity too. Cingular's EDGE network, for example, will enable you to take advantage of improved audio and video features in mobile devices, use higher resolution photos in wireless communications, and access e-mail and company data much more quickly and efficiently. Plus, EDGE-capable devices are already backwards-compatible with GPRS, so if you travel outside of an EDGE coverage area, your device seamlessly switches to Cingular's GPRS coverage, without you ever missing a beat. This means an increased lifespan for your current equipment.

With Torpark, an individual can download the application onto a USB thumb drive, and by plugging it into the USB port of any computer, create an encrypted tunnel from the computer that allows the user to surf the Internet anonymously. While Torpark is a tool for people who want to surf the Internet anonymously in public places, the application can be problematic to a business because it can bypass Internet filtering policies and invite unwanted traffic and content into the organization's network.

Network Composer Version 7 allows administrators to apply policies to Torpark client traffic to block it and regain control over usage. Policies can be applied to a single user, a group of users or an entire organization and can include different usage rules based on time of day. As an individual attempts to connect using Torpark, Network Composer can block the traffic regardless of the way the client is used - running Torpark on a USB drive, CD or even installed on a host machine.

"Torpark gives users the ability to access the Internet anonymously in public places, but can be detrimental in a corporate environment," said Kevin Santiago, Cymphonix CEO. The Torpark signature will be available in Network Composer Version 7 along with Anonymous Proxy Guard?, which prevents the use of anonymous proxy sites that allow employees to bypass filters and monitoring tools. HOW TORPARK WORKS
When a user logs onto the Internet, a unique IP address is assigned to manage the computer’s identity. Each website the user visits can see and log the user’s IP address. Hostile governments and data thieves can easily monitor this interaction to correlate activity and pinpoint a user’s identity.

Torpark causes the IP address seen by the website to change every few minutes to frustrate eavesdropping and mask the requesting source. For example, a user could be surfing the Internet from a home computer in Ghana, and it might appear to websites that the user was coming from a university computer in Germany or any other country with servers in the TOR network.

It is important to note that the data passing from the user’s computer into the TOR network is encrypted. Therefore, the user’s Internet Service Provider (ISP) cannot see the information that is passing through the Torpark browser, such as the websites visited, or posts the user might have made to a forum. The ISP can only see an encrypted connection to the TOR network.

However, users must understand that there are limitations to the anonymity. Torpark anonymizes the user’s connection but not the data. Data traveling between the client and the TOR network is encrypted, but the data between the TOR network and websites is unencrypted. Therefore, the user should not use his/her username or password on websites that do not offer a secure login and session (noted by a golden padlock at the bottom of the Torpark browser screen).

Network Composer's unique event correlation features have been expanded to enable organizations to quickly identify network events that impact resources and trace them back to the user that triggered the event, the application that was used and the threat that may have been involved. If more information is needed, administrators can look at specific URLs, filenames, time of day, and source and destination IP.
