Our thoughts and prayers go out the entire Coy, ETSU and Washington family/communities as they have tragically lost a very special individual. Seth Coy, 19, died in a car crash last night in Kentucky (driving westbound on I-64 around 5:30 Wednesday evening, at mile-marker 38, between Lexington and Louisville) while traveling back home to Indiana.

Seth Coy currently played for the East Tennessee State University Bucs Basketball team. He had previously played for the Washington Hatchets (alongside Tyler Zeller) averaging 13.6 points and 9.8 rebounds a game as a senior. At ETSU Coy played in 24 games as a freshman, averaging 10.8 minutes a game, with 2.0 rebounds and 2.9 points per game.

Report from TriCity states, “According to preliminary investigations, Det. Rice says Coy hydroplaned, lost control of his vehicle, and went into the median, causing the car to overturn. As of now, Rice thinks that the car flipped at least two times in the median, and one of those flips caused Coy’s body to be ejected from the car. Coy was not wearing a seatbelt. Emergency medical crews pronounced Coy dead at the scene. No other cars or people were involved in the crash.”

Seth Coy you were a character at times, always bringing a smile to faces. You knew when to joke around and be serious. You were a dear friend, great player and an outstanding person! You will be missed by many! R.I.P.

Looks like Butler University (26-6 last season and spent 12 weeks in the national spotlight) has landed another quality Indiana player for the class of 2010- Eric Fromm. Fromm is a 6 foot 9, 210 pound, forward from Class 4A state champions, Bloomington South. Bloomington South went undefeated this past season while Fromm averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game.

“They have an excellent basketball program and always compete on the national stage against great teams,” Fromm said. “I felt Butler gives you a great education, and Indianapolis is a place I’m familiar with. It’s not like staying home. It’s far enough away, but close enough to come home.”

Fromm said he was getting attention from Oregon State and Xavier. He also had scholarship offers from William & Mary, Wright State, Evansville, Ohio, Rice, IPFW, and Miami-OH.

This is the first commitment for the Bulldogs in 2010, which leaves 2 scholarships remaining.

After 39 years of coaching, J.R. Holmes, of the Bloomington South Panthers, can honestly look back and be most proud of himself. Coach Holmes finally won “The Big One” and with the latest win totaled in 606 wins, fifth-best in the state.

Besides winning the biggest game of his coaching career this season, J.R.’s team went undefeated and is host to their very own 2009 Mr. Basketball- Jordan Hulls (Indiana University).

Congratulations Coach Holmes on being named the 2009 All-USA Today boys basketball Coach of The Year and a national ranking of 3rd!

No. 3 Lawrence North falls

Franklin Central pulls off the upset, next must face unbeaten No. 1 Bloomington South
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: March 15, 2009

As Franklin Central coach Mark James watched his players celebrate the program’s first regional championship Saturday night, he imagined the reaction as word of the Flashes’ stunning 49-36 win over Class 4A third-ranked Lawrence North made its way south.

“They’re smiling down at Bloomington South, I can guarantee you,” said James, in his 24th year at Franklin Central. “They beat us by three or four touchdowns last time we played.”

Top-ranked and undefeated Bloomington South — which will be the Flashes’ opponent in a semistate game Saturday — smothered Franklin Central 77-45 when the teams met in late January. But relying on past results might not be of much use now.

Not after Franklin Central (21-5) avenged a 14-point loss to Lawrence North by frustrating the Wildcats with a sagging defense and deliberate offense. Patrick Bade scored a game-high 25 points and senior teammate Casey Coons added 10 points and a steady hand at point guard against the taller Wildcats.

“It was probably one of the best team efforts I’ve ever had from a team,” James said. “I thought Bade and Coons really stepped up and played very well for us. They played smart, hard and made things happen. To beat a team like that you have to have your best effort of the year and I think we just did that.”

Lawrence North (25-3) had won 13 straight after taking out Hamilton Southeastern 50-45 in a regional semifinal earlier Saturday. But after a strong performance in last week’s 73-68 sectional championship win over North Central, the Wildcats didn’t play with the same fervor.

New Albany loses to No. 1 Bloomington South, 61-50

No. 1 Panthers prove too much
By Justin Sokeland • jsokeland@courier-journal.com • March 15, 2009

SEYMOUR, Ind. – The pairing, a No. 1 vs. No. 2 clash between undefeated boys’ basketball teams, might have been a fantasy for the fans who packed an 8,100-seat gymnasium to watch it, but reality was hard and brutal on New Albany.

Bloomington South, ranked No. 1 in the polls, was simply superior, proving it emphatically with a 61-50 victory over the No. 2 Bulldogs in the opening game of the Class 4-A regional yesterday morning at Seymour.

The Panthers, spurred by outstanding guard play, never trailed and cruised to a 22-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. Their balance, with five starters scoring in double figures, and their defensive toughness left little doubt to their status as one of the state’s elite teams.

Bloomington North confirmed that status further in last night’s regional final, routing Terre Haute South 66-39. The Panthers will take on Franklin Central (21-5), which surprised Lawrence North 49-36, in next Saturday’s semistate.

The battle lines, South’s perimeter against New Albany’s post power, were clearly defined, and the Panthers (23-0) won all the skirmishes. Their post players more than held their own, as junior center Erik Fromm scored a game-high 14 points, while their guards dictated tempo and the outcome.

“They have a great team without any weaknesses,” New Albany coach Jim Shannon said. “We couldn’t find one all week, and we watched nine games on film, watched them in person a couple of times. They’re very heady and scrappy.”

The Bulldogs (23-1) got only five points from their starting backcourt during the first three quarters and hit only 10 of 23 free throws, a total that included the front end of two one-and-one chances.

Despite the South advantages, despite hitting only 6 of 17 free throws in the first half, the Bulldogs were within striking range at 24-19 late in the second quarter. But a last-second three-pointer by South’s Jordan Hulls, an Indiana University signee, gave the Panthers momentum.

What can we say? The Bloomington South Panther’s seem to be the real deal. Mr. Basketball frontrunner, Jordan Hulls, will play in the 2009 Kentucky Derby Festival Classic. Jordan Hulls was one of the three Indiana signees, along with Christian Watford and Maurice Creek. Four Louisville recruits (including Jordan Hulls Indiana Elite AAU teammate, Stephan Van Treese) and three Kentucky recruits will also be in action on April 11 at Freedom Hall in Louisville. You better be going to this!

Also happening this week in Bloomington…it looks as if South has moved up yet again in the USA Today rankings. This move makes then ranked 3rd, nationally. They are ranked 15th according to ESPN Rise.

SCORE: ND 50 BR 49
When: Sectional Semifinals
What: Four seconds left. Barr-Reeve goes up the court to hit a three. SO? The ball was half way to the basketball when the official called it off. Great job.

No letup as Princeton takes sectional title

By Drew Bruno (Contact)
Sunday, March 8, 2009

PRINCETON, Ind. — As Princeton’s Rontray Chavis waited near halfcourt while Memorial attempted a free throw, coach Tom Weeks shouted in his direction.

“Come on, baby!” Weeks bellowed, not wanting his sophomore forward and his teammates to let up in the final 2 minutes, 20 seconds of Saturday night’s Class 3A boys’ basketball sectional championship game.

And after a missed free throw, the ball just happened to find Chavis at the other end of the court, where he slammed it home, putting his team ahead by 13 points — never to look back while bringing the crowd on its feet, never to return to its seats.

Princeton won 60-51 on its home floor Saturday night, denying Memorial consecutive sectional titles.

For the host Tigers, it was their first sectional championship since 2000.

“We brought the tradition back to Princeton; it feels good,” junior Jordan Simmons said, his teammates, coaches and more than a few fans still surrounding him on the court after the game. “It hasn’t set in yet. I didn’t know it was going to be this big.”

For a team that’s ranked No. 1 in the state and now stands at 25-0, there was no denying the significance of Saturday’s victory.

“This team’s goal throughout has been this,” Weeks said, “and now we’ve got this win.”

While Chavis’ dunk helped put a finishing touch on the night, Simmons and senior Trevor George led the way with 16 points apiece.

Memorial opened the scoring with a pair of free throws for a 2-0 lead but missed 12 of their first 13 shots from the field, trailed 10-6 after one quarter and never got any closer than three points the rest of the way.

“We had point-blank shots and they didn’t go in,” Memorial coach Rick Wilgus said. “Why they don’t go in, I don’t know.”

Yet Memorial never fell behind by more than 13 points — it lost by 14 in the teams’ regular season meeting — and was within four points at one point in the fourth quarter.

“We kept telling them compete, compete, compete,” Wilgus added, “and they did. We competed with a lot of heart — I’m proud of the effort those kids put forth.”
