Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we get.

What grades and subjects is the SMG suited for?
Teachers in grades 4-12 are the primary participants. The flexibility of the program allows you to use it with a variety of subjects, including Social Studies (Economics), Mathematics, Business, Family and Consumer Sciences, Technology, and Language Arts. It can be integrated into school clubs, lunch or rainy day programs, after school, and gifted student activities.Lessons are about a period in length, but can be adjusted to suit your classroom needs. At least one period a week is recommended.

How much classroom time does it take?
It takes 3 or 4 class periods to introduce your students to the SMG, which can be started before the game officially begins. Once it starts, students should have the opportunity to post trades once a week or more frequently. You have the flexibility of choosing how much or how little class time to devote to the program.

How much is the program fee?
The SMG program is offered to teachers in Indiana at no charge.

Does this meet Academic Standards?
The SMG program has been correlated to national and state standards for Economics, Mathematics, Business, English and Language Arts, Social Studies, Technology, and Family and Consumer Sciences. This commitment assures teachers that the SMG program provides a meaningful educational activity. The correlations can be helpful guidelines in using the SMG program to meet state or local standards in these areas. (See the Standards section in the Teacher Support Center for the most updated information. Information is also available from the SMG coordinators.)

How do I register for the program?
To begin the process of registering for accounts for your students, go to http://www.stockmarketgame.org/. Click on the How to Register tab in the upper-right corner of the page. On the next screen, choose United States from the drop down menu, and then on the next screen, choose Indiana.

1. Once you have selected a program, you will be logged into the Indiana page for the Stock Market Game. If you select the incorrect program, you can go back and select the correct one.

2. When you have reviewed the information and are ready to register, click on the Pre-register tab. On the next screen, you will choose your Registration Type. To register accounts for your classes, select “Teacher with Class(es): Teachers pre-registering one or more classes (4-12).” This will provide you a Teacher Used ID and student accounts. After your selection, click on Continue.

3. You will now be viewing the online teacher registration form for the Stock Market Game. Bolded text signals important instructions or fields that MUST be completed for your registration to be processed.

4. After you have completed the on-line teacher registration form, click Submit Pre-Registration. You will then be prompted to submit the number of teams you wish to register for each class. A team can be made up of 3-5 participants. If you do not know the number of teams you will need, please provide your best estimate. Unused teams can be removed at a later date. Once you have completed all the information on this page, click Submit and Continue to complete your registration.

User IDs and passwords will be e-mailed to you. Keep in mind; accounts require one business day to fully activate.

For more information, e-mail Indiana State Coordinator, Jeff Sanson (jjsanson@purdue.edu) or phone 800-790-6640. (see The National Assessment of Educational Progress in
Economics: Findings for General Economics). NAEP's test data indicates students in a stock market game scored an average scale score of 159, a statistically significant nine points above the national average. In fact, stock market game students scored significantly above the national average in every results category (i.e., gender, race, Title I, and special needs).

Introduction to The Stock Market Game online workshops are being offered in August on the 20th and 26th. There will be 2 sessions on each day, one beginning at 3:30 and another at 4:30 PM(EST). Teachers in grades 4-12 interested in using the program this year will find these helpful to learn the basics of the program. Additional sessions will be added in September.

[Added 8/21/08] Additional on-line workshops (for new and veteran teachers) have been added.
