Goetzman, who also worked on <em><a href="http://www.hbo.com/band-of-brothers/index.html" target="_blank">Band of Brothers</a></em> with Spielberg and Hanks, said that while he and the other producers felt that <em>Band of Brothers</em> was a great film, they still had more to say about World War II in this miniseries:

<p>"It was very important for us to show how this war affected these men—during the war, after the war. We think that is really something we didn't get to in <em>Band of Brothers</em>." (Watch an <a href="http://www.hbo.com/the-pacific/inside/behind-the-scenes/video/conversations-with-executive-producers.html?autoplay=true" target="_blank">interview</a> the executive producers of <em>The Pacific</em>.)</p>

<p>It sounds like it's going to be a fantastic miniseries (for more information, check out HBO's interactive <a href="http://www.hbo.com/the-pacific/index.html#" target="_blank">site</a> for the film). Now I'm really disappointed that I don't have access to HBO! However, I do have access to some World War II books that are great companion reading for <em>The Pacific</em>. To learn more about the Pacific Theater, please check out the following <a href="http://www.scribd.com/document_collections/2373059" target="_blank">selections</a> that I've posted on Scribd.</p>

<p>Tune in tonight and let me know how the series is! (I'm adding it to my Netflix list.)</p><xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/IndianaUniversityPressBlog/~4/syJw-CzAFDw" height="1" width="1" /></div></content>

That seems like a lot more than usual!) films nominated for best picture, I'll be tuning into the <a href="http://oscar.go.com/" target="_blank">Oscars</a> this Sunday (and not just for the hosts, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, although that is reason enough!). Besides the entertainment factor, I'm keeping an eye on the nominees whose wins might generate interest in some of our books (and more material for me to blog about!). Here are the winners I'm hoping for:<br /><p><strong>Best Picture:</strong></p><em>A Serious Man</em><br />Joel Coen and Ethan Coen<strong><br /><br /><a href="http://www.iupress.indiana.edu/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=120916" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Year's Work in Lebowski Studies" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341fdff053ef0120a904a124970b " src="http://iupress.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341fdff053ef0120a904a124970b-120pi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Year's Work in Lebowski Studies" /></a> Why I want this picture to win:</strong> A win for the Coens is a win for us, as we published <em><a href="http://www.iupress.indiana.edu/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=120916" target="_blank"><em>The Year's Work in Lebowski Studies</em></a></em>, a dudely study of the Coens' cult film, <em>The Big Lebowski</em>. Dissecting the Coen brothers' filmmaking has been good for us, as we've had quite a demand for the Lebowski book.<br /><br /><strong>Probability of a win:</strong> Slim. My prediction is that <em>Avatar</em> will take this category.<br /><br /><strong>Actor in a Leading Role:</strong><br /><br />Jeff Bridges<br /><em>Crazy Heart</em><strong><br /><br />Why I want this actor to win:</strong> See Best Picture reason above. The Oscar buzz around Jeff Bridges has worked to our advantage, as the Lebowski book has been mentioned in several articles about him (thank you!!!). And I want Jeff Bridges to win because he is awesome in this role (this is one of the Oscar movies that I actually saw!).<strong><br /><br />Probability of a win: </strong>Good. Even though the only other nominee's performance that I saw was George Clooney in <em>Up in the Air</em>, I'm still calling this one for Jeff Bridges.<strong><br /><br />Foreign Language Film:</strong><em><br /><br />A Prophet (Un Prophète)<br /></em><strong>France</strong><br />Directed by Jacques Audiard <br /><br /><strong><a href="http://www.iupress.indiana.edu/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=235415" onclick="window.open(this.href,'_blank','scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" style="float: right;"><img alt="Corsican Fragments" border="0" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341fdff053ef0120a904a31d970b " src="http://iupress.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341fdff053ef0120a904a31d970b-120pi" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;" title="Corsican Fragments" /></a> Why I want this film to win:</strong> We have a book coming out later this year called <em><a href="http://www.iupress.indiana.edu/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=235415" target="_blank">Corsican Fragments</a></em>. The film deals with some of the same themes in the book, such as the "otherness" the main character experiences as a Muslim and Corsican and the tensions with the French. As our editor said, references to Corsica in popular culture are rare, so perhaps a win will bring some attention to <span>understanding cultural difference in this part of the world.</span><strong><br /><br />Probability of a win:</strong> Uncertain. I've read some great <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2010/feb/26/entertainment/la-et-prophet26-2010feb26" target="_blank">reviews</a> of this film and of the lead actor's <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2010/03/a-prophet-star-tahar-rahim.html" target="_blank">performance</a>. But not having seen or heard anything about the other nominees in this category, I can't make an educated guess.<br /><p><span>What <a href="http://oscar.go.com/nominations/nominees?cid=10_oscars_landingCallout_nominations" target="_blank">nominees</a> are you rooting for?
