The weather is nice and the boys of summer are back at Victory Field. The Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, kicked off their season in April and will be playing at Victory Field through September. The 12,200-seat stadium known as one of the best minor-league ballparks in the country is also a hit when it comes to parking. Super Bowl 2012 Parking Tips

Finding a parking space in downtown Indianapolis during the Super Bowl week will be a tough task both for local residents and out-of-town visitors. Many garages and lots will be set aside for use by the NFL and corporate sponsors. Most meters will be closed. Other spaces will be replaced with tents for parties or other events. Traffic restrictions surrounding Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center could make it difficult to access the remaining lots.

The Super Bowl Host Committee has designed a transportation plan, including a map showing recommended travel routes. Additional road closures are planned from Feb. 3 through Feb. 5. Here are some tips for those making parking plans for Super Bowl festivities:

Reserve your 2012 Super Bowl game day spot in advance
Several parking garages and lots allow you to make a parking reservation (book now) before you head downtown on gameday. Booking early means you can plan your route into the city and know exactly how close you'll be to Lucas Oil Stadium for the big game, or the Indiana Convention Center for the NFL Experience. It won't come as a surprise that parking spaces closest to the action are most expensive, up to $495, but that allows you to set up a tailgate and stick around for several days. If you do plan to tailgate, make sure the lot where you're booking allows it.

Book with the NFL
The league has agreements in place reserving hundreds of spaces around downtown for use by game attendees. The spots are available for $60 per space plus the cost of Fedex shipping and will only be sold to verified and approved ticket holders. The NFL-controlled spaces in some cases are several blocks from the stadium and are pricier than some privately managed lots, so depending on availability it could be a better bet to opt for a private lot. Hoping for a metered spot? Wear comfortable shoes
Downtown has hundreds of metered street parking spaces that typically are the best option for visitors. But all of the spots within several blocks of Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center will be closed during Super Bowl activities due to traffic restrictions and reserved parking. Plan to arrive very early and willing to walk if you want to park using a meter. Meters are free on Sunday.

Parking for non-game Super Bowl festivities
Checking out Super Bowl Village or NFL Experience? You can reserve a spot in advance for one of downtown's numerous parking garages or lots. Another option is Circle Centre mall, which plans to charge a $20 event rate for up to 8 hours of parking and $40 for 8-12 hours, starting Jan. 27. If you opt for Circle Centre, make sure to have a back-up plan since the garages tend to fill up fast. The mall is planning to charge an $80 flat rate on Super Bowl Sunday.

Park and ride to the NFL Experience, Super Bowl Village - SOLD OUT!!
The Super Bowl Host Committee has arranged a special park-and-ride option for downtown visitors. Shuttles will run from Friday, Jan. 27, to Saturday, Feb. 4, picking up at the parking garage at 327 N. Illinois St., the old airport's long-term parking lot at 2155 S. High School Road, and the Market District Garage at 101 N. New Jersey St. The $2 park-and-ride spaces are sold out.

Additional transit options
During weekdays, the Indy Express Bus runs from Carmel and Fishers to Indianapolis for $5 each way. The service also plans to add Saturday service on Feb. 4. Details are here. And starting Feb. 2, the Super Bowl Host Committee plans to offer a shuttle service to downtown from several area shopping malls, including Greenwood Park, Clay Terrace, The Fashion Mall at Keystone and Metropolis Mall. Crossroads Classic Parking: IU v. Notre Dame, Purdue v. Butler

One of the hottest tickets in Indianapolis this weekend is the Crossroads Classic, a sold-out college basketball doubleheader at Conseco Fieldhouse Dec. 17. Butler will play Purdue at 2 p.m., and the red-hot IU Hoosiers will play Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. Here are a few tips for parking near Conseco Fieldhouse:

The most convenience place to park is the Virginia Avenue Parking Garage, a 2,200-space garage that connects to the stadium via a walkway over Delaware Street. Prices vary, and some spaces are reserved. If you want a deal, ask for the roof rate.
Your most frugal bet is to find an empty meter space a few blocks from Conseco Fieldhouse, and walk a few blocks. Most meters cost $1 per hour until 9 p.m. on Saturdays.
For the plan-ahead crowd, you can reserve a spot in advance and remove the hassle of hunting for parking. A handful of garages and lot owners allow you to make a parking reservation before you head downtown.
Privately owned lots and garages near the stadium generally charge between $10 and $15 for special events.

Big Ten Football Championship Parking

The game is Dec. 3, 2011, at Lucas Oil Stadium, which sits within easy walking distance of thousands of garage, surface and street parking spaces. Here are a few of your best options for parking:

Whether you're going to the game or just visiting downtown, finding parking can be a challenge on Indianapolis Colts game days. There are dozens of options, ranging from pay lots next door to Lucas Oil Stadium to metered spots several blocks away. A few tips:

Several nearby garages also are a good option for parking on game days. Many of the city's more than 72,000 parking spaces are in covered garages. Indy Express Bus Routes from Carmel and Fishers to Indianapolis

The Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority and Miller Trailways have partnered to offer two weekday commuter bus routes between Fishers and downtown Indianapolis, and between Carmel and Indianapolis. The cost is $5 each way and includes Wi-Fi during the trip. Here are the details:

Fishers route

Departs from the northeast corner of 106th Street and Lantern Road at Prairie View at Crosspoint (west side of Interstate 69).
Departure times from Fishers: 6:30 a.m.; 7:10 a.m.; 7:45 a.m.
Departure times from downtown Indianapolis at the corner of Pennsylvania and Ohio streets: 4:05 p.m.; 5:10 p.m.; 6:05 p.m.

Carmel route

Departs from Meijer at Pennsylvania Street and West Carmel Drive.
Departure times from Carmel: 6:30 a.m.; 7:10 a.m.; 7:45 a.m.; 6 p.m.

Free Parking in Downtown Indianapolis

Parking for the most part is affordable and abundant in downtown Indianapolis when no major event is underway. However, you can do better than affordable if you play your cards right. Here are a few tips to snag free parking downtown:

Street spaces in areas with new digital meters are free after 9 p.m. and on Sundays and holidays. Spaces with old meters are free after 6 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends. Make sure to look for signs and read instructions on your meter for exceptions. *
Parking at Circle Centre Mall? Catch a flick at the United Artists Theater or buy a gift card there, and you can get up to four hours of free parking. Remember to bring your parking ticket to the box office for validation.
Some downtown retailers and banks offer parking validation for customers. Check in advance to see if such an offer applies to your visit.
A limited number of free street parking spaces are available if you're willing to park on the edges of downtown and walk. Make sure to check for no-parking signs.

Parking for FFA National Convention

By popular demand and courtesy of the FFA organization, here are some details on parking for the FFA Convention this week in Indianapolis:

1. Prepaid parking passes for regular-sized vehicles will be available for purchase when you register for convention online. A parking pass will allow you in-and-out privileges in the same parking lot or garage, Tuesday through Saturday during the convention. The passes will be priced to reflect negotiated group rates, which are expected to range from $27-$77. If you chose not to purchase a pass through convention registration, daily parking passes can be purchased at each parking facility. Daily parking passes do not include in-and-out privileges, and prices are at the discretion of the parking facility.

2. If your chapter is staying at a hotel in downtown Indianapolis during the convention, you will have the option to use the hotel's parking lots for your vehicles. Parking arrangements must be made through the hotel. At this time, parking rates for downtown hotels are between $12 and $28 dollars per day. .

3. Open parking in the downtown area is available on a first come first served basis. Costs range from $5-25 per entry with no in and out privileges. Please note that access to these spaces is not guaranteed. You will find abundant and affordable parking options in downtown Indianapolis. 4. Shuttle service will be available Wednesday, Oct. 20 and Thursday, Oct. 21 to transport convention attendees to and from the Indiana Convention Center and the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

5. Parking at the fairgrounds will be complimentary Oct. 19 to Oct. 22 during the national FFA convention. Convention participants attending the career development events or the Three Hills Outlaws of Rodeo events will need to follow the directions of the parking attendants. Please Note: Bus parking lots will not allow vans, automobiles or pick-up truck parking. Parking facilities for these vehicles will not accommodate mini, charter or school buses

Use interstates to travel to and leave Downtown.
Enter Downtown from the side on which you plan to park.

Circle Centre Mall Parking Garage Now Accepts Credit Cards

Circle Centre mall in downtown Indianapolis is now accepting credit-card payments at its three parking garages. You can access them on Washington Street, Maryland Street, Georgia Street, and Illinois Street.

Here are the garage rates for regular days when there is no major event downtown:

Enter before 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday:
0 - 3 hours $1.50
3 - 4 hours $4.00
4 - 5 hours $8.00
5 - 6 hours $12.00
6 -12 hours $15.00
12 - 24 hours $20.00

Enter after 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday:
0 - 3 hours $1.50
3 - 5 hours $3.00
5 - 6 hours $6.00
6 - 8 hours $8.00
8 - 12 hours $14.00
12-24 hours $20.00

During Colts game days or big downtown events, the garage may charge a $20 event rate. Drivers will be notified by signage at the garage entry and can get normal parking rates by showing a $20 receipt from any Circle Centre merchant.

The only Circle Centre merchant that provides parking validation is the United Artists Theater on the fourth floor, which offers four hours of complimentary parking to moviegoers.

Parking downtown for the Circle of Lights

The annual Circle of Lights is expected to draw a crowd of 100,000 people to Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis on Friday, Nov. 25. The event begins at 6 p.m., and the tree lighting is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. But where will everyone park? Here are a few tips:

The Circle will be closed to vehicular traffic, so parking there will not be an option unless you arrive very early and are willing to wait a long time to get out. Avoid it.
The best, and cheapest, bet is to find a metered spot a block or so away from the Circle, along one of the major arteries in and out of the city, including Pennsylvania or Delaware streets. Metered spots will be free for the event.
Other options include nearby surface lots and garages. More than 66,000 total spaces are available. Your best option is finding a surface lots, again a few blocks away. The garages can get extremely congested during events when everyone is leaving at the same time. You can find more information about downtown parking here and here.
If you park in a garage, don't go directly to your car. Why not spend a few more hours downtown to grab dinner or a drink? You can always find ideas of what to do here.

Tips to Prevent Vehicle Break-ins While Shopping or Attending Sporting Events

A warning from Indianapolis Downtown Inc.: It seems every year about this time larcenies from vehicles increase as people leave items in plain sight when they park their cars to attend sporting events, conventions or to shop.

There has been a recent rash of vehicle breakins during events including the FFA Convention and the Nov. 1 Colts game. The good news is that IMPD has increased patrols and undercover activity and they have apprehended at least one suspect in some recent break-ins. The bad news is that we know more break-ins are likely to happen.

Please be advised that vehicle break-ins at the last Colts game targeted parking facilities north of Washington Street, most likely due to increased police presence near Lucas Oil Stadium.

As we enter the holiday season and continue with Colts and Pacers seasons, IMPD asks that you remind your customers to not leave items in plain sight in their parked cars and to increase your on-site security to watch for perpetrators. We know that larcenies from vehicles are crimes of opportunity-let's work to reduce the opportunities so we can reduce the number of crimes.

Indianapolis Airport Raises Parking Rates

Parking is more expensive at the Indianapolis International Airport, starting Sept. 1. The airport authority has decided to raise rates across the board to help it cope with a $15 million revenue shortfall caused in part by slower-than-expected passenger traffic. The new garage rate is $18 per day, a $2 increase. The surface parking rates went up $1 to $12-per-day for the long-term lot, and the economy lot rose $2 from $7 to $9.

Indianapolis May Privatize Parking Meters

The city of Indianapolis is considering whether to follow Chicago's lead and privatize its parking meters as part of a plan to raise new funds to pay for infrastructure improvements. The story appears at IBJ.com.

City officials are considering several modernization proposals designed to wrestle more revenue out of the city’s roughly 4,000 parking meters. They’re considering a range of proposals, including the possibility of a long-term lease to a private firm, a move that netted Chicago more than $1 billion last year.

One estimate pegs the value of a long-term lease of Indianapolis’ meters at more than $100 million. The meters already add more than $3 million per year to city coffers,, but proposals from private firms responding to a city request for information say that number should be much higher.

Greenwood Express: Park and Ride Bus Service from Greenwood to Indianapolis

IndyGo is now offering a Commuter Express Bus route to and from Greenwood, in addition to routes from Carmel and Fishers. Here are the details for the new route:

Catch the bus: Meijer Store on North State Road 135. Park at the north corner of the lot at Stark and Marlin drives.

Times: The first pick-up is at 6 a.m. at the final drop-off is at 6:45 p.m.

Cost: One-way bus fare is $3.

IndyGo offers a Commuter Express Bus route to and from Fishers. Here are the details:
Catch the bus: Eastern Star Church at the corner of 106th Street and Lantern Road. Park in the northwest corner of the lot.

Times: The first pick-up is at 6 a.m. at the final drop-off is at 7 p.m.
Cost: One-way bus fare is $2.
