With India’s GDP expected to grow by 7%,  lower than the earlier projected growth of 9%, Indian railways believes the situation will improve, as its freight earnings have always grown faster than the GDP.  Freight movement in December and January were encouraging and it expects good traffic demand in its key sectors like cement, iron ore, coal and fertilizers.             <description><![CDATA[Railway Ministry has sanctioned Rs. 30,000 million to Southern Railway for various capacity upgradation  works. The proposed amount will be spent on doubling rail tracks (Chennai-Arakonam, Korukkupet-Ennore) and overall 1109 km of rail track to be doubled. The money will also be spent on electrification of around 1181 kms of rail tracks which includes Villupuram-Katpadi.             <title>Reliance Infra to construct rail link between Delhi airport and city centre</title>

            <description><![CDATA[Reliance Infra – Anil Dhirubai Group Enterprise has finalized contracts to put up the rail link between Delhi airport and city centre. A special purpose vehicle ‘Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd’ was formed where Reliance Infrastructure with 95% equity and CAF – the Spainsh firm holds the balance 5%. The company has got 30 year concession to design, finance, build, maintain and operate the 22.7 km rail link. At the end of the concession period DMRC will get back of the property. CAF will supply 8 trains of six coaches  from Spain – which will delivered early next year. While, signalling equipment and other power supplies and baggage handling equipment will be provided by Siemens, platform screens by Faiveley, automatic fare collection equipment from Indra, ETA, Kone will supply the lifts and Alcatel to provide communication equipments – passenger information systems, CCTV and master –clock. The total project investment is around Rs.28850 million with debt-equity ratio of 70:30. The rail link will likely to get operational before Commonwealth Games of 2010.]]></description>

            <title>Pune plans new metro rail with DMRC</title>

            <description><![CDATA[Pune Municipal Corp has commissioned Delhi Metro Rail Corp, to conduct a feasibility study for the rail project. DMRC has suggested two rail links – one from Chinchwad, along Pimpri, Shivajinagar upto Swargate a total route length of 16.58 km with an investment of Rs. 49,300 million and another rail link from Paud Road, Deccan Gymkhana,  Shivajinagar, Bundergarden, Yerwada upto Kalyani Nagar with investment of Rs.22170 million. The project will run in short underground patch but mostly on elevated tracks. Around 110 acres of land is required of which 31 acres are private property. It has suggested a deadline of 2014 for completion, provided speedy approvals are there.]]></description>

            <title>Railways plans freight corridor projects on East, West and South India</title>

            <description><![CDATA[Railways plan to develop industrial corridors along the Eastern and Western freight corridor routes. These  industrial corridors would comprise industrial hubs, logistics parks and mega power plants to be erected through public private partnership. The railways propose to put their land banks to productive use, to avoid increase in cost and to help in early start of industrial projects.

To catalyse industrial development in this corridor, investments have been proposed in rolling stock production and assembly facilities and coach rehabilitation at Dankuni, Majerhat and Naopara in this region along the Eastern corridor. This will lay the foundation for a rail-based industrial cluster in the Eastern Industrial corridor, drawing upon inherent advantages of proximity to coal and ore mines, large workforce and metal works market.

The dedicated freight corridor projects on the Western and Eastern routes have been christened the ‘Diamond Rail Corridors’. An expert committee would be set up to ensure the project is done in a time-bound and cost-effective manner.]]></description>

It seems, IRCTC may be entrusted on the task of designing the interiors of the train.

The proposed luxury train modeled on the lines of the famed Palace on Wheels would cover all the tourist destinations of Orissa.

The luxury train will provide the tourists with a flavour of the state's wildlife, beaches, Buddhist sites, exquisite temples, arts and crafts, dance forms, Chilika lake and the tribal culture. Unlike other luxury trains operating in the country like Palace on Wheels, Deccan Odyssey and The Golden Chariot which cater to high end tourists, the luxury train would also be affordable for the middle income groups.]]></description>
