The Indibooks Guide to Buying Used and New Books Online

There are several auction, marketplace, and commercial bookseller sites selling used and new books on the internet. Indibooks is an Independent bookseller specialising in social work, fostering and adoption books, other sites may sell a range of academic and other books. What should you look out for when buying books online?

Don't always trust the photograph of the book - check the publishing year and edition of the book, ask the seller if necessary.
If buying from an auction site, check the seller's feedback rating. Most sellers will strive to build and keep a good rating.
Check the postage and packing costs - are these included or extra, are they reasonable?
Is the seller knowledgeable about the subjects of the books they are selling. Can they advise you?
You can often save yourself money by buying an older edition of a book. See the HINT on using older editions on the Indibooks Social Worker, Student Resources page. However, if there have been changes in the law relating to the subject, you need to be aware of these.
When comparing prices, check that you are comparing like for like. Is the book an ex-library book or As New? Are there any hidden postage costs - is the seller posting from the UK or the US?
Does the seller offer a Returns Policy if you are not satisfied with your purchase?
Is the seller offering adequate information about the book for you to make a decision to buy? Can you contact the seller for further information?
Will the seller keep you informed about the progress of your order and dispatch your books within a reasonable time period?

Clearly state a returns policy, which can be viewed on site, and will also assist you with any problems.
Provide generous information, including contents where possible
Send emails confirming your order, advising you that your order is being processed, when your order is dispatched and when you can expect your book/s to arrive

Adoption Week, More Books, Christmas!

The book catalogue is now completely restored, and many books have been reduced in price. There are also some NEW books (not used). Remember that postage is no longer included in prices. This enables you to compare prices more easily with other sites selling used books. Postage details can be found on-site on the 'Postage, Packing and Payments' page.
You can still save money off your orders by registering on-site, and asking your friends to register and mention your login name (not your password). Apologies to anyone whose details were lost during the recent site crash. You will need to re-reigster.
Celebrate National Adoption Week - if you know of anyone who is considering adopting, why not suggest they take a look at Indibooks. It's a good place to start finding out about adoption through the range of books on adoption and the links to other sites.
The 'Letter from Kenya' continues, and is a good balance of reporting on the positive and uplifting nature of the people Tess comes across as well as the adversity they are faced with. Details should be available soon for anyone wishing to volunteer or make a donation....

Changes in the Law on Child Restraints in Vehicles

comes into force on 18.9.2006
child restraints will need to be used for ALL children under 12 years old and under 135cm tall (children older and taller than this are able to wear adult seat belts) appropriate to their size, with some exceptions
This includes baby seats, booster seats and booster cushions

Exemptions Include:

licensed taxis or hire cars if there is no appropriate child restraint
a child age 3 and over, who because of unexpected necessity, is travelling over a short distance. this does not include school runs etc.
a child age 3 and over, in the back of a vehicle with 2 other children in child restraints, where there is not room for a third restrain
a disabled child who needs to use a seatbelt for disability, where none is available

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer and managed to take some time out. I guess many of you will be going back to college or university to start or continue your degree in social work or social care. More links have been added which may help you with your study and PRTL. There are more books on site, plus Indibooks has opened an online UK Gifts and Clothing shop, rather than linking to a US supplier, to make it easier for you to order. You can even suggest your own logo's or style and design combinations by using the on-site feeback form, and I will do my best to 'make it so'. Why not take a look at what's new? Dare I say it - you may even find an early christmas present for someone! Items and new designs will be continually added, and each purchase will enable Indibooks to continue to provide a resource for students, social care workers, foster carers and those considering adoption or who have already adopted. What is Anti-Discriminatory Practice in Social Care?

This is one of the latest search questions reaching http://indibooks.co.uk/ and one that every social work and health and social care student will need to consider on their degree course.

There are several layers of discriminatory practice ranging from the personal to the institutional. The first incorporates practice based upon your own acknowledged or unacknowledged values, which may lead to discrimination when assessing service users and requesting services. These may include assumptions about the person's abilities or ethnic group or the way in which you may interpret their body language, which could have different cultural meanings compared to your own. Institutional racism or discrimination involves the rules, ethos, and organisational practice of the institution employing you or being used by the service user. A knowledge of the issues will be essential for anyone studying social care. If you are STUDENT about to start a social work or health and social care course, you could e-mail a booklist through the site (www.indibooks.co.uk/), and I'll let you know what we have in stock. Writing the first assigment is the worst. You're not sure what is expected and if you haven't had to do this for many years, it can be scary. You'll find any excuse, yes even washing up, to avoid sitting down and doing it, but that IS the only way to do it. There is some information on where to get help under 'Students' on the 'About' page of Indibooks. - Take a look.
