Jason Ward hails from Shepherds Town, West Virginia. He has recored over two hundred songs and I was fortunate enough to get my hands of two of his latest tracks from the freshly released album "Gracious Bow". The tracks "Bless You" and "Dark in Here" pleasantly surprised me with their soothing tone and subdued nature. The lyrics are beautiful, I even quoted him on my Facebook status update! I am so sorry that I have neglected this blog for the past couple of weeks but it is all for legitimate reasons! I have so much lined up, coming in the near future, that I do not just want to start posting any crap left and right, just to fill up the space! Especially after my last post which I am very proud of, considering all the great feedback (Thanks a lot guys!). I only want to do a post when I really have something exceptionally special and besides that I have had some personal trouble lately, like, my car broke down, I wrote the international Photoshop Expert Exam, I acted in a music video and I also started writing a novel (which is going great), if there is a interest I will post a couple of excerpts from the novel. But I promise that I will get back to the blog to bring you the greatest and latest in Indie Music! Oh and I also started with a new half day job, which also takes up a lot of my time. So please do not blame me for my absence but rather watch this this space for some great new bands, some great guest posts, Kangaroo's latest mix and lastly, I am also planning to organize a couple of interviews! It has been awhile since Indie Arto has presented you with a mix. I do not know where in the world you are, but from but where I am right now, the weather is miserable, the son has gone into hiding and the winter is upon us like a police dog. So with all this time I have sitting around, doing anything but leaving my heated room, I decided to slap together an indie mix.

This mix tends to be very chill with a little bit of spice added here and there. Most of the songs on this mix were released in 2010 with the exception of a few. I think that here is really something for everybody so it won't hurt just to check it out.

Wolf Parade Set to Release New Album!!!

We all know the band Wolf Parade who enthralled us with their previous releases such as "Apologies to the Queen Mary" and "At Mount Zoomer". Well good news, they are set to release their latest album (which has been in production for quite a while) no later than June 29th 2010. The new album is entitled "Expo 86" and is said to be better than any of their previous work, I cannot promise anything but all I know is that they will really have to shine to outdo their previous albums. Mad Planet is a Los Angeles based duo made up of Greg Gordon former drummer for the Fugazi-style punk outfit the Nervous Return and Cooper Gillespie former front woman and bass player for the X-influenced rock band Bang Sugar Bang. Both formed Mad Planet in order to stretch in new directions different from their normal musical styles.

Their music is about love and life. The band's sound is a modern and eclectic mix of hip hop beats, rock, jazz, and soundtrack music tied together by beautiful aching melodies. Full of rhythm and poetry, Mad Planet's debut album All Elephants assimilates their primary sonic inspirations, Portishead, Massive Attack, and the Cure, while digging deep into a soulful exploration of loss and heartbreak.

Mad Planet is currently demo-ing songs for their sophomore album. They plan to release it early next spring. They are also looking forward to touring this summer.

This set was especially performed for Pitchfock.tv, which is basically a video version of the real Pitchfork Media. In this extremely high quality music video, one once again knows why you are absolutely addicted to this band. I especially like the semi acoustic twist which they put on this rendition of the song Kettering.

Bringing the Fans to the Bands.

Hi Guys! There is a new indie site that has made it's way onto the interweb, or actually not. It has been in existence since 07 but was closed down for renovations and is now back in full force.

So what the site basically does is it connects the fans with the bands and the bands with the fans and it's main focus is events, concerts, etc. So have a look, it is for either fans or a bands or whatever.

Ok, so if you have like never ever downloaded a song from Indie Arto, you have to download this track by Nina Gordon, she actually made a cover of a NWA song called Straight Out of Compton and it is both hilarious and beautiful!

New York locals, The Walk Ons Release killer album called We Did This on Purpose!

This is the second album I am reviewing from the record company Drug Front Records, firstly I reviewed Miniboone, which turned out absolutely amazing and now its this, The Walk Ons, who are a four piece band from New York who not just making ripples on the indie scene but rather gigantic tsunamis!

They recently released their five track EP called We Did This on Purpose which a collection of highly addictive melodic rock which can be enjoyed while having sundowners on your deck or at a sweaty dirty night club where dancing is the thing to do. A person cannot help but initially tapping along to the beat before losing oneself and jumping around in ecstasy. The album does not stray away from the party rock but instead manages to provide the listener with 5 tracks of pure listening pleasure! It is hard to single out any tracks on this album because mainly because each of them are individually catchy and contain some sick guitar, drums and vocals which combined are an exciting mix of pure raw energy.

Miniboone Interview!

I few weeks ago I did a post on the New York band Miniboone and at the end of the post I kinda promised an interview and yes, here it is. This must be one of the most funniest interviews that I have ever done. These guys are just fun, fun and more fun.

1. Ok your music is absolutely amazing and addictive (I have mugged two people who were listening to the old school disc man’s just to be able to listen to your CD while I was on the subway) tell us more about the album.

Doug: You probably already said this, but it's called Big Changes. We recorded it in an old silk factory in New Jersey last September. Most of it was recorded live and spruced up by our engineer, Jesse Cannon. It's dedicated to everyone and contains six original MiniBoone songs, written by us.

2. New York has a crazy cool indie scene, has indie always been your genre or are you ignoring your deep love for George Michael just to please the indie masses?

Craig: It's funny you mention GM, because we usually play "Freedom '90" at least once every road trip.

Doug: I think that picture sums it up pretty well.

3. Your music video is way better than most mainstream music videos on television, how, what and why?

Sam: It probably helps that there aren't many music videos on TV anymore. And the ones that are don't rip off "Sledgehammer" enough. Actually, I would love it if David LaChapelle directed a MiniBoone video. David, if you're reading this, call us.

Craig: Never mind mainstream music videos, there are so many boring indie videos. Just watched this new video by Signals. It's three minutes of dogs licking various members of the band as they sing into the camera. Come on. That's one gag! There's no excuse for a band with some creative freedom on an indie label to make a video as underwhelming as that. When we were planning our video, we spent a lot of time brainstorming all the gags we were going to put into it so it would be as manic and rewatchable as possible.

Eric Wareheim does amazing videos. The videos he did for Major Lazer, especially "Pon de Floor," are packed with insane ideas. If we had cash, I would love to have him do a video for us some day. He understands that a music video does not need to simply be an excuse for bloggers to write about a band; a band's philosophy and personality is distilled through its video. That was what we set out to do with our video.

Sam: How much do you think it would cost to secure the rights to use MC Skat Cat in a MiniBoone video? If we ever get major label money, we'll spend it to get Tim & Eric to collaborate with David LaChapelle on a video that features MC Skat Cat, and use the $10 left over to record the album.

4. I described your music as anything from Cake to Arcade Fire, how would you describe it?

Doug: Someone compared us to XTC once, and I think we were all pretty happy with that.

5. Who writes the lyrics and what is the inspiration, I mean I hear about a sixteen year olds experience with love then suddenly the song evolves into a twenty two year olds obsession with love?

Doug: Usually whoever is singing is the one who wrote the lyrics. With three lyricists, I guess that accounts for some of the differences in perspective you hear. But on the other hand, nothing we're talking about it straight autobiography.

James: Sometimes I write a song and have absolutely no idea what i am talking about. Usually those ones are terrible. Just a little pointer for all those aspiring songwriters out there. If you can't answer the question, what is your song about, then you may want to change the lyrics.

6. Who is this illustrious Rosalina, who apparently can tear a new hole into the dance floor?

Craig: She's an army nurse who smokes cigarettes as she performs lung surgery, and there's something special about her that fascinates the narrator of the song.

7. Are you fans of the Twilight Vampire craze/fashion/obsession or rather do you guys secretly wish to be vampires or not?

Sam: Craig did play a vampire in a movie called "Propeller." It was basically a mumblecore version of Twilight.

Craig: Just to clarify, my character was not a Robert Pattinson-style love interest or anything like that. I ripped off a prostitute's arm, pushed a guy into helicopter blades and beat a doctor to death while foaming blood out of the mouth. Though come to think of it, I did do it all with my shirt off, kinda like RP. Just imagine a more psychotic and much less sexy version of this guy: Robert Pattinson

Doug: My aunt said Twilight was boring, so I'm sticking with Buffy until I hear otherwise.

8. You guys have like a thousand gigs booked, has it always been this way or is this an entirely new lifestyle for you (I think you better get used to it)?

Craig: It started getting really intense around 4-5 months ago, once we recorded our EP and started promoting it. Since then it's been a whirlwind. It's funny because all five of us have been putting a lot of time into booking shows, setting up an LLC for the band, doing press, pursuing licensing, etc., but we're not breaking even yet. Right now we're saving our band money up to buy a van. It takes a lot of work to make a band financially viable: not just playing shows and writing music, but also working at your computer like any other 9 to 5 job.

James: yeah, I wonder when we are gonna start breaking even often. It would be cool to do that, but if not, its still pretty cool. I mean, I am in a freakin rock band. I could be like "f' off!" and you would have to be like "ok", because I'm in a rock band. I can be late to anywhere I go, and people are just like, "its cool, he's in a rock band". Can you do that? No. So to sum it up, we have been booking a lot of gigs lately to promote our very first EP.

9. Are you friends with the great band known as the Walk Ons and if yes, tell us a funny story about them and about yourselves?

Doug: The Walk Ons are partners of ours on the beloved Drug Front Records, which I suppose means we are friends with them. A funny story about us is that one time we were in a car, listening to "Triumph" by the Wu-Tang Clan very late at night. Taylor and Craig thought I was asleep, so when I started doing some of the rapping along with the song, they thought I was having a dream rap seizure or something and would have freaked out if they hadn't been so tired. Oh also the Walk Ons were setting off whoopee cushions in the trunk while this was happening. I guess you had to be there.

James: Well, there was this one time you asked us if we were friends with the Walk Ons, and if yes, if we could tell a funny story about them and about ourselves. I think this is the only story we can actually tell about us and them together because we have never met them. But it was hilarious.

Sam: We have met them, James. They are the only band on our label we haven't played with yet, though.

10. Thank you for your time, normally super famous people are not this nice… Every interview needs its cliché, last words?

Sam: Last words are for fools who haven't said enough.

James: I just drank a lot of coffee, so I shouldn't have answered any of these interview questions. I love you.

John Vanderslice - Radiohead Karma Police Cover!!!

Brand New Music Video by "Oh My God" called "Bring Yourself"

When you look beyond the blasphemy in this bands name and also past the fact they actually admit to being fans of the infamous death metal/core/wrist slashing and Bible bashing band Cannibal Corpse, they can be quite likable. This four piece outfit hails from Chicago and has been gracing the indie music scene with their "Happy Hardcore/ Turntabilism/ Chinese Pop" for more than ten years.

Apart from the fact that this is an excellent heart felt song, the music video is not too bad either, actually it is damn good and if it was not for my cold hardheartedness and partial blindness (read about it here) I might just have had to swallow down a tear but instead I just swallowed down a tequila and like a real trooper watched the video till the end. Every now and again you make a discovery which leaves you feeling downright proud of yourself and it gives you hope in knowing that "finding a diamond in the rough" is not just a saying. So here is how it happened, it was way past midnight and I could not bring myself to fall asleep when I decided to check my emails (an act which was neglected for a couple of days because I was camping at a music festival). Through this medium of communication I was approached by Sam, the bass player for a five piece band MiniBoone, to write something about them, as I have mentioned in previous posts this often happens and does not amount to much but boy oh boy was I surprised when I downloaded their EP and was transported to a musical islands where everything was pretty and everything just made sense. I just love it when the little guys can actually teach the age old industry players a trick or two and that is exactly the case with MiniBoone. Before I get to their latest EP "Big Changes", check out this fantastical music video for the song "Cool Kids Cut Out of the Heart Itself".

MiniBoone really caught me off guard with their catchy melodic indie party tunes. The EP "Big Changes" manages to build momentum and role with that right through the album. The music is hard to compare and classify but I picked up influences ranging from bands like Cake to The Features to Arcade Fire and even the British Band Dirty Pretty Things. The song which is also the debut music video "Cool Kids Cut Out of the Heart Itself" is a real hit, with an ecstatic combination of vocals and instruments which proves to be more catchy than the whole Vampire craze. The track "Devil in your Eyes" starts off sounding like something which Arcade Fire would do but after a few seconds of listening, it is clear that this is not Arcade Fire but rather pure MiniBoone which can be characterized by their harmonizations, keyboard and drums. This band is really something else and I cannot help but smile when I hear their music! The weird thing on this album is the inconsistency in the vocals (which is not a bad thing) what I mean by this is that the vocals sound very different from one song to the next which keeps the album fresh and entertaining from the beginning right to the end. I am going to try and get in contact with Sam to try and get an interview! Now go out their and buy one of the coolest albums to grace this site and the interweb in general!

After about a month of idling and not contributing anything to Indie Arto, I have decided to reopen the flood gates of creativity and let the waves roll. The reason why I have been absent, as some of you may wonder is because of my recent battle with retinal herpes. That’s right, who would have thought that you can catch herpes through petting a cat (in a non sexual way). Therefore I have been confined to bed and even placed under actual quarantine with absolutely no contact with the outside world. Not much has changed since I have returned from my months long absence, except that my girlfriend contracted real herpes (she swears it’s from "petting a dog"), my brother has undergone an extensive gender transformation operation and my flatmate has converted my bedroom into an illegitimate brothel. But it is definately good to be back. Life is fantastic even though I have lost 80% sight in my left eye and 42% in my right eye due to the retinal herpes off course. So be prepared as i said in the beginning of the year that Indie Arto is going to be big and sure as hell it is!

This is just one of those absolutely amazing songs that get stuck in your head and you cannot go a single minute without listening to it. Although the Antlers have released their album Hospice in 2009, they are not close to being old news, this is one of the best albums of last year, even of all time and I really think that it will maintain this position for some time to come.
