Kotz Cornejo receives American Spirit Award in Los Angeles

Emerson Alumnus Henry Winkler ’67 and Professor Cristina Kotz Cornejo were presented with American Spirit Awards Wednesday, May 29, from The Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors for their storytelling work.

Cornejo, associate chair of production in the Visual and Media Arts Department, was honored for Special Achievement in Educating New Filmmakers. Winkler, an Emmy-winning actor, producer, director, and children’s book author, received a Caucus Legend Award during the ceremony held in Los Angeles.

“We are thrilled that the Caucus has recognized these two outstanding Emersonians,” said Provost Michaele Whelan. “Their considerable talent and their commitment over time to telling stories that enlighten, empower, and entertain, exemplify the College’s mission and make us proud.”

2012 MacDowell Colony Fellowship

I was accepted to the MacDowell Colony to work on a feature length screenplay I had started writing last year. Before getting to MacDowell I realized I wanted to write a short back story to another feature I have in an advanced stage of development. I wanted to write a short that would introduce us to the two characters of the feature, two sisters living in Mexico City and facing a change in their life's circumstances.

At MacDowell I embarked on this new project and wrote the short, which led me to re-examine the feature. As a result I made changes to the feature. Writing the back story, a key moment in the lives of the two sisters that occurs a year before the feature begins, allowed me to learn even more about how these women respond to challenges and how it is that they arrived at the points in their lives that they are in the feature.

I met some amazing artists while at MacDowell, they inspired me to delve deeper in my work as I saw them develop their own work. I also had a lot of thinking time. Space to take in my own thoughts and the nature around me. I spent time photographing the land scape (see photos) and reflecting on my life. I stayed in the Mixter Studio, my home away from home.

I'm grateful for the opportunity I was given at MacDowell.

Academy Award Winning Production Designer Visits Emerson College

Production designer Brigitte Broch (left) spoke to students at the Bright Family Screening Room with Associate professor of Visual and Media Arts Cristina Kotz Cornejo.

Brigitte won an Academy Award for Baz Luhrman’s MOULIN ROUGE, and also received an Academy Award nomination for ROMEO + JULIET. She has collaborated as Production Designer on all of Director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu's films; AMORES PERROS, 21 GRAMS, BABEL and BIUTIFUL. Some of her other work as Production Designer includes, the not yet released film, SAFE HOUSE as well as, THE READER, VANTAGE POINT, SHE HATE ME, REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES, ABEL, FIDEL, ENTRE VILLA Y UNA MUJER DESNUDA and Alfonso Cuaron's SOLO CON TU PAREJA.
