The songs of Papuri! 20 are a snapshot of life as God intends for us to live it, and life as we know it from day to day. Often there is a wide gap between the two.

The songwriters have a simple agenda: share their experiences in dealing with that gap.

Papuri! 20 is a collection of musically-rich precepts from God’s Word in contemporary settings of jazz, ballad, pop and even Pinoy styles.

Here’s a sampling:

• Jim San Juan sings the theme song “Babalik-Balikan” by Toi Polo, expressing pure and heartfelt praise bursts from the heart and that you just have to return to again and again.

• Tricia Amper-Jimenez interprets Dodjie Simon’s poignant “Dinggin Mo” a prayer to bring our nation back to God.

• Reuben Laurente renders Henry Gasser’s declaration in song, “Sa Iyo Lang” in his effortless yet impassioned signature style.

• Dulce brings her musical maturity to full use in a breathtaking take of Rhoen Del Monte’s “Sa Iyo Lumalapit”, a response to Jesus’ invitation, “Come to Me…”

• Mario Lajarca, Jr. will inspire you to trust Jesus completely with Soc Villanueva’s jazz ballad,“Si Jesus ang Bahala”.
The songs of Papuri! 20 are the personal stories of the songwriters and the singers, and they can be your own story as well. Does this sound familiar:

The sound of the band keeps evolving through the years hence the versatility but it is only this year that Lui has released her first 4-song E.P. dubbed LUI STORIES, which gave way for her to showcase her different sides in music.  The first track, Live for Today, is a fresh reggae beat you can skip around to whilst the second one is a jazz-influenced track with a lot of guitar riffs.  The third track, written by one of Cebu’s brilliant singer/songwriter Mr. Makuz Cortez, is a super sedated song that is actually used as one of the OST for Jerrold Tarog’s indie movie, Senior Year (2011).  The last track is an upbeat, alternative-ish composition that talks about never losing hope.

Whether rocking out guy tunes, going mellow acoustically, singing and dancing in reggae beats, or crooning some Norah Jones music, Lui (and a band sometimes) has been on and off the music scene since 2001 starting off her professional career as a musician at the age of 19.

She started out as a solo performer in the heart of Manila, getting gigs at local bars around The Fort, Eastwood, Quezon, Makati, etc.  These gigs include weekly mainstays, corporate events, and front acts.

By 2005, Lui transferred to Cebu City where a four piece band came together under the influences of U2, Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, India Arie, Corinne Bailey Rae, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Tracy Chapman, Bob Marley, Ben King, and the like.

SIBLING REVELRY: A Review by Jude Bacalso

Crafting music, at least for the Wonggoys, is still best done the old fashioned way.

The brothers: Gabriel, Billyboy and Kyle, first draw inspiration from the now: Facebook crushes, laser beams and the desire to be king of the world, and some cryptic boytalk—all of which lend amazingly well to great guitar playing honed from years of aping their musical inspirations, until they come into their own in this debut album.

The tracks, produced by veteran Cebuano musician Cattski Espina and distributed by homegrown 22 Tango Records, sound like conversations the siblings have among themselves, to catchy rhythm. The title track embodies the spirit of the entire collection: I’m not sure what to say, but I’ll say it anyway. Not exactly a Jack Kerouac stream of consciousness, it does have undertones of this untethered release of emotions into precisely arranged words: bridge, refrain and all. And the subject matter, perfect for a debut release and in tune with the naught-laced innocence of the three, is never heavy-handed and always—almost nonchalantly—spot on current.

Bound for heavy player rotation, or repeat radio airplay, are the jazz and blues-infused, guitar-driven dilemma in Chase the Girl (or Rule the World), the ingeniously-written patriotic piece Kalayaan sung in Cebuano, Filipino and Hiligaynon, the Jason Mraz-inspired HD, and the track that best showcases their wicked sense of humor, Bonus Track…masquerading as the sweetest love song.

Completed in a little over 4 months, this neat little package comes in a tiny full circle, definitely the first of many. Photographed by the award-winning Dr. Erwin Lim, who also shot them for their first newspaper feature, it’s the perfect Holiday gift from Gabe, Billyboy and Kyle to a listening public hungry for a new sound that doesn’t labor to be heard.

Like the brothers who make the music, they just grown on you.
