What’s the first thing that comes to mind when we roll out the words ‘style and substance’ to you? When planning this issue with that particular theme in mind, it naturally occurred to us to interview star personalities from various fields who embody those traits. Take the illustrious Kiki Ganie for instance. Who better to grace this issue’s cover than the man who has successfully solved a mind-boggling puzzle that involved big numbers? We’re referring to US$7 billion, to be exact.

Talking about style and substance doesn’t take us too far away from one of today’s most overused phrases–work and play. Ask any successful person out there (yourself included), and chances are, he’ll tell you that one of the keys to success is to simply have a balance of both–which is why we’ve gone the extra mile to bring you not only features on established professionals in this issue, but also ideas for your next getaway (why not extend that business trip, if you can afford a few days of kicking back in the lap of luxury at a stunning eco resort or a rooftop bar with a view that’s out of this world?), next dining venue, next ride to add to your shiny lineup in the yard, next watch to sport on your wrist and next gadgets to flaunt at your next big meeting or trip.

While you’re at it, you’d want to look the part too. Whether you decide to go for a classic made-tomeasure coat for an important rendezvous or a slouchy top and distressed jeans for a drink (or two…or more) with your buddies at an exotic holiday destination, check out our features and fashion pages for inspiration and an update of what you can find in stores now (yes, including that cool scarf you’ve been eyeing on!).

As you flip through the pages of this issue, don’t be surprised to find the little changes we’ve made to please your eyes. Think of this subtle upgrade as our way of showing you our most sincere appreciation for sticking with us and inspiring us to perform beyond expectations day after day, and issue after issue, even as we pass our fourth year of existence in Indonesia. We hope you’ll enjoy this edition all the way to our closing thoughts on prominent French designer, Philippe Starck, where he shares his perspective on creativity and the ideology behind his cutting-edge designs.

Till the next one, here’s to living life to the fullest!

Guinness Arthur's Day Photo Concert September 2011

2011-10-19T20:51:00.000-07:00

WHAT IS ARTHUR GUINNESS DAY?
In 1759, history was made when Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease on the famous St. James's Gate brewery in Dublin, Ireland. Thanks to Arthur, people everywhere have been enjoying the world's most famous stout for more than 250 years. So each year, we celebrate the life and legacy of Arthur Guinness and his brewing tradition. And what better way to celebrate great beer than with great friends and live music from some of the best artists of our time? Arthur Guinness Day brings people together in their local pubs, their cities and around the globe to share and toast the black stuff together.

I recently went to Beijing as a response to an old colleague's request. The trip was long overdue since I've always wanted to go to Beijing ever since the Olympics in 2008. Traveling to places for the first time is always a thrill. The feeling of nervousness and eXcitement is mixed into one emotion.

If there is one nation that has influenced us in our everyday life, that would be the nation of China. From the clothes we wear to the technology we use, all the way to the very food we eat. Whether the origin came from China or not, their influence is undeniable.

Sad to say that my trip was not because I was volunteering at an organization nor having some important business meeting. This was a straight up vacation. I took my time in walking the street s and made mental notes as to where I was going to eat my meals for the day and where I was going to go. My friend took me to see the tourist spots like Forbidden City and other temples, we even made a short trip to see the Great Wall. He took me to see the Chinese acrobats which were fascinating and eerie at the same time.

With the city of Beijing gaining so much popularity among travelers as a destination to visit, the city still has much to offer than just its sights. But the one thing that stood out to me in that trip was actually the time I got lost in the side streets and found all these unique stalls t hat sold vegetables in one and beer in the other and another that served skewered barbecued pork.

It was at 5 in the afternoon and the streets were getting dark and several people from the neighborhood flocked to these stalls to either buy their dinner or have a beer with friends at the side of the street. I stopped to buy a beer and trade a smile with one of them and they attempted to speak in English. It's funny how the most uncommon places will make your travels the most memorable

Let's Eat Magazine October 2011

2011-10-18T18:01:00.000-07:00

Hello and welcome to the October edition of Let's Eat! Magazine.
Summer is almost here and the island is heating up, so this month we bring you lots of ideas for keeping cool, starting with a day at the beach in our cover story, Finn's Beach Club (p 28.) The newly opened restaurant at the base of the cliffs in southern Bali offers wonderful casual dining and the opportunity to lounge on the beach in absolute comfort. Back in Seminyak we drop by WooBar at W (p 56) to sip signature cocktails during a remarkable sunset, and then go shopping in the super stylish Bali Deli (p 20.) In Sanur we discover the only night driving range on the island at Balibeach Golf Course and dine in the charming club house Sector (p 38.) In the hills of Ubud we get healthy with raw food at Little K (p 46) then savour delicious gelati and sorbetto at Gelato Secrets (p 60.) We finish in Kuta where we fire things up again at the legendary T J's Mexican Bar and Restaurant (p 24.)

All this and much much more in the 27th issue of Lets Eat! Magazine.

As always
Bon Appetit

Yet public interest in FF Hotdog very large, as evidenced by the long lines of customers who are willing to queue to be able to enjoy the delights of FF Hotdog although the place sober.
Furthermore, FF Hotdog also requested by many loyal customers to fill catering to family feasts. Given the level of public confidence that the greater the FF Hotdog, Hotdog FF party ventured to open more outlets are adequate. That's why when I heard the news that Cilandak Town Square (Citos) will be opened, FF Hotdog immediately participate by renting a place there. Finally on April 11, 2006 for the blessing of God Almighty and the support of our loyal customers, FF Hotdog Citos opened, and immediately got a good place in the hearts of the community as evidenced by the magnitude of the public interest to queue up in order to enjoy the delights FF Hotdog.
Seeing the good response Hotdog FF is not silent. Hotdog FF reproduce the types of food sold by not leaving a sense of distinctiveness that already exist. Minumanpun plus its kind so hopefully the customers will never be saturated with menus presented.
Along with the success of the first outlet in Citos, also came an offer from a few loyal fans of FF Hotdog to widen its services to the community wing.

Boyband, oh Boyband [Tray Magazine Oct 2011]

2011-10-12T03:49:00.000-07:00

Hectic boyband (including girlband, mixband) who brings change not too important in the country music realm lately. Not a new trend of Indonesian music.

WHY is not important? Because it was too early to be called a trend of the country music world. Just to euphoria. The rise of boy (girl) bands lately more appropriately viewed as the excesses of K-pop trend that is sweeping the world. As in many countries, the trend of Korean Pop is also being penetrated young children Indonesia.

There are some smart people brained creative reading of this situation. K Pop trends that are hot-warm believed music could give birth to something for Indonesia. There must be whiz own country among K-pop phenomenon worldwide. Whoever he or they who were behind the formation of Sm * sh must have been people who have good intuition. Because Sm * sh proved to be tasteful local boyband K-Pop that managed to steal the attention of young ground water. Local Hero!

Regardless of whether they imitate or not, sound good or not, but as K-Pop pioneer in the homeland, Sm * sh earned its own market in the music industry. They reap many benefits from popularity. Multitude of activities, ranging from a gig, shooting ads, interviews, photo shoots, meet fans, and even movies. Their concerts also are always flooded with spectators.

Popularity Sm * sh then spawned many imitators. Boyband pop. But as pioneers, Bhishma cs unrivaled. Packaging as well as a mature concept makes Sm * sh could not be shifted. While many argue that now is the era of the boyband, I disagree. No boy band boom. That there is simply madness to the K-Pop is channeled through the local hero named Sm * sh. Only Sm * sh!

Yes boyband Indonesia currently only Sm * ash. Let's talk all the "excess" Sm * sh. They are the most densely boyband gig schedule. Boyband who made serial soap opera. The top-selling boyband ringbacktonenya. Boyband most widely asked as commercials. Boyband most of his fans. As pioneers, they had swept almost all the dreams of artists. The growing number of imitators that eventually only a small piece scramble 'cake' which was 'bitten' Sm * sh.

Imitators only share loss than good. Production costs while taking care of the boy band pretty minimal income. Boyband an average of more than three people it would need a vocal coach and choreographer, also need a place to practice. Not to mention fashion stylist and costume. While revenues are expected to come from a gig and ringbacktone job never came. As a result, the imitators just so artists consumer TVs, which is being bereforia with boyband and the like

Bali Art Sales Gallery

2011-10-10T00:09:00.000-07:00

As most visitors to Bali know, it’s a love affair that often begins on your first visit. We came here first, on a holiday in June 2005 and just fell in love with many aspects of life here, and came away with a feeling that it is possible to support ourselves more simply, wanting and needing less material goods and still make life meaningful.

We are not starry-eyed idealists, and the atrocities of 9/11, and Bali bombings have depressed an economy almost totally dependent on tourism. Many of the local artisans produce wonderful creative goods of all types: Paintings, jewellery, statues, garden-features, clothing, glass and ceramicware, etc.

We have moved here permanently and have now geared up to sell Balinese Art products online. Initially we are offering a few lines only, but we will be offering items from more of our categories as soon as we can.

We have available some wonderful products for distribution and sale online. We are setting up to cater for different groups: personal shoppers simply looking for small numbers of items using the International Postal Services, or commercial and business groups purchasing in bulk using containers and shipping.

We believe that there is something for everyone here, and you can buy with confidence. There is a money back scheme if you are dissatisfied.

PS: you may also find an occasional blog here: thebaliartsalesexperience which mixes stories and images from Bali with our experiences setting up Bali Art Sales. We hope you like them.

Cemeti Art Profile

The struggle and rebellion toward kebaharuan in art history, quickly back into the old-fashioned and outdated establishment. Unique and alternative, soon turned into an established and uniform.

Since 1988, Cemeti Art has been actively promoting and encouraging art practices in contemporary Indonesian art scene and in a broader international platform. More than ten projects, such as site-specific, community-based exhibitions, presentations, and performances involving local and foreign artists, writers and arts activists, has been held every year.

Discussions with artists, project presentations and group exhibitions are presented both locally and internationally, as well as a curated monthly exhibitions held in the gallery itself and Cemeti Art. These activities include 'ART OF BAMBOO' in 2001 (followed by the artists of Indonesia and Denmark), 'CHOOSE YOUR OWN PUBLIC' in 2005 (followed by Indonesia artist), LANDING SOON residency programs from 2006 to 2009 (followed by artist Indonesia and the Netherlands), 'TRADITIONAL PERFORMING ART PROGRAMME ADVOCATION' in 2007 with the support of the Ford Foundation in five villages, "FORGET THE PAST '(followed by Indonesia artist), an itinerant project in Den Haag, Amsterdam, Jakarta, Semarang , and Shanghai in 2007.

Contemporary art in Indonesia can be viewed as a form of consciousness and reflection from the perspective of artists associated with the problems in community development. Through their work, artists respond honestly and often criticized the phenomenon of very specific social and aesthetic perspectives brought into the discussion, while other artists may express their individual and personal approach to reality. Being bound and stuck on a particular media discipline becomes a less critical issue.

In 2010, Cemeti Art launched a new platform where all activities will revolve around and focus on the reinvention of 'Art and Society', which emphasizes the practice of art is more respectful alternative 'process' rather than 'promotion'.

Cemeti Art exhibition space designed by architect Eko Agus Prawoto in 1999, highlighting the idea of local - global, traditional - modern art - non-art, individual - collective, natural - artificial craft - industrial, conventional - innovative as the paradox that is reflected in architectural structures, turned into an open studio suitable for workshops, exhibitions, discussions, and learning the critical and complementary.

Studio Art House Cemeti and will gradually make an ideal and strategic role to mediate the dialogue by focusing more on the research process of each party, where the curator, writer, art critic, activist art, and artists met each other in our residency program.

As a result, the exhibition will emerge with a better curatorial spotlight and presentations with the publication of the necessary..

Ubud - Artistic Centre

The emergence of Ubud as an international Centre for the Arts happened during the 1920's and 1930's. This was in large part due to the insight and energy of the King of Ubud at that time, Cokorde Agung Sukawati, who acted as a great patron of the local Balinese arts. He met and became friendly with those wealthy international visitors who were intrepid enough to penetrate to the interior of the island of Bali.

Cokorde Sukawati offered hospitality to these visitors, and a warm and friendly relationship grew between them and the very talented local artists and craftspersons, which led to the visitors encouraging, promoting, and inspiring the local artists to develop and further their art.

This happened not only in the fine arts of painting and sculpture but also in music and dance. Thus the names of those foreigners have become part of the art history of Bali, names such as Miguel Covarrubias, Walter Spies, Rudolph Bonnet, Arie Smit, and till now we talk of the Walter Spies style, or the young Artists style of Arie Smit.

After the Second World War, these developments continued with more and more people spending extended periods of time here in Ubud painting, studying and becoming involved with local arts and crafts. Even now in the 1990's Ubud is home to many artists who may be famous in their homeland but here are treated with normal friendship and courtesy as just another artist. So, we too at the Seniwati Gallery have close and friendly links with many overseas artists, whether visitors or residents, and hope to encourage the continuation of this tradition.

Officiated by Mrs. Rina Ciputra Sastrawinata,
President Director of Ciputra Artpreneur Center

Hosted by Ms. Azura Mangunhardjono & Indie-Joy Art Management

EVENTS natural eruption of Mount Merapi give so strong memories for the artist Agus Priyono YK. Artists who lived by the Javanese culture is experiencing the event despite the distance range of about 30 km from the center of the eruption, and not including the victims directly. However, in the folds of time are constantly moving, the eruption of Merapi remains in the memories of their personal imprint in the collective memory of the people of Yogyakarta in general.

In his capacity as an artist, a massive event later became the inspiration and source of ideas for the birth of creative works. "Social fact" that there be a catastrophic eruption of Merapi, which for most people around the volcano, gradually moving into "aesthetic fact" which is poured out in many landscape canvas. Shifting "social facts" which then manifests as an "aesthetic fact" not much done by a human figure or even an artist who lack awareness as homo socius which also "doubles" as a homo aestheticus. Agus YK are few artists capable of capturing and willing to take care of the potential aesthetic values behind "social facts" of cases of eruption of Merapi. Of course with all the advantages and drawbacks.

In this solo exhibition, visual theme of "wedhus gembel" or pyroclastic become one of the subject matter (subject matter) for much of his work. Visualization pyroclastic placed on the top portion of the image area and take between a quarter to half of the canvas. Image of the pyroclastic burst from the top or the like from the pit crater and then move to find a place lower.

Under the existing image pyroplastic broke and dry land. Also there are landscapes tiny humans who walked away from the center of march pyroclastic. There is also a panorama of the houses are ready to hit "wedhus gembel". Also landscape tree with branches that dries. The images can be listened to in the works entitled The Sign, Beauty of Survival, The Power of Everlasting, The World's Never Ending Sympathy, and other works. The works are to be expected to put Agus YK mindset that in a crowd of catastrophe, there is still aesthetic values that can be adduced to be relied upon for the emergence of the spirit of optimism in looking at the coming disaster.
