For eddy current dynamometer users, the DS820 is a third generation, intelligent Power Amplifier Unit that will prove indispensible in its flexibility. Whether upgrading existing test cells or for implementing new test installations, the DS820 interfaces with any PC/PLC based controller running third party software, as well as all of Dyne Systems’ existing controllers.

Jackson, Wisconsin - For dynamometer users, Dyne Systems introduces the DS820, a third generation intelligent, universal eddy current Power Amplifier Unit (PAU). Its totally new digital design offers a greater flexibility for upgrading existing dyno test cells, or for implementing new test installations. Applications range from simple manual, stand-alone control to fully integrated, closed loop implementation. The DS820 interfaces with all of Dyne Systems’ existing dynamometer controllers, as well as other industrial PC/PLC based controllers running third party software.

The DS820 provides a unique set of features. The front panel diagnostic LCD display eliminates guesswork by displaying real-time field current, input command, status, and fault messages. Error messages can also be reported via PLC level I/O to external controls. An analog 0 to 10 VDC input enables the unit to be used as a standalone, open loop eddy current power amplifier for simpler applications; or it can be integrated into existing test cells with fully integrated closed-loop control units by OEMs, independent testing houses and universities.

Setup is simple and straightforward, and modular construction of the PAU allows the DS820 to be interfaced with a variety of different dynamometer control components. With significant increased current capabilities, this unit is now available in a space-saving and reduced wiring rack-mount version. Wall mount units include a standard 15 amp, 30 amp, 50 amp, and 100 amp ratings at up to 480 VAC. Higher nonstandard amp ratings can easily be custom engineered.

For customers who prefer to get leading-edge performance and test cell system integration from a single provider, Dyne Systems’ new DS820 fully integrates into a sophisticated family of dynamometer and control equipment that can be configured to meet high level, automated test program execution. Dyne Systems solutions include the multi-loop Inter-Loc V, Operator Control Station, single-loop dynamometer and throttle controls, Companion III Data Acquisition systems, Cell Interface Assistant hardware, and Cell Assistant automated test program software. For more information on the DS820, please visit www.dynesystems.com.

KWJ Engineering introduces a new generation of its popular Pocket CO, the Model 300, a portable CO monitor to protect against the silent killer, Carbon Monoxide. This key fob sized carbon monoxide detector with digital readout weighs under one ounce, making it the most portable and affordable protection available from dangerous low and high levels of CO. “Pocket CO” is ideal for professionals and recreational users alike, including pilots, boaters, truckers, campers, building inspectors, firefighters, industrial hygienists, and first responders. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that sends tens of thousands to the emergency room and causes an untold number of fatalities each year.

Aspen, Colo. – KWJ Engineering debuts the pocket CO, an effective, extremely portable carbon monoxide detector. Recent headlines show use of a personal CO monitor can highlight danger and prevent tragedy.

A family of four that succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning in an Aspen-area home on the Thanksgiving holiday likely died within minutes of being exposed to the gas, based on preliminary findings. The level of carbon monoxide in the residence was estimated at 5,000 parts per million (ppm) at the time of the incident. The estimation was based on a test completed at the home, Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis said. The test involved starting up the Munchkin boiler that powered the home’s snowmelt system, letting it run throughout the night, and using a CO monitor to gauge levels of the toxic gas.

“The measurement was 20,000 ppm in the crawl space and 5,000 ppm in the bedroom where the family was found,” Braudis said.

A disconnected exhaust pipe that stretched from the boiler to a chimney flute appears to be how the gas infiltrated the home. He also said investigators did not locate a carbon monoxide detector in the home where the bodies were discovered.

Because of this, builders soon may be required to equip all new Colorado homes with carbon monoxide detectors, under legislation introduced recently. The proposal is being fast-tracked in the wake of five highly publicized carbon monoxide deaths. The law would not apply to currently occupied apartments, or to motel rooms or rented commercial condos. Sponsors said they are trying to save lives, but that they fear trying to apply the bill to all dwellings could doom it.

The Solution is Pocket CO, the personal protector

Recently the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department held a CO awareness meeting, and invited the Aspen Police Department among others. The AVFD has been testing the Pocket CO monitor, and so far likes it. The following is an excerpt of an email correspondence from Rick Balantine, Deputy Fire Chief/Medical Director of the AVFD to the APD:

“I wanted to say thanks to all from APD for attending the CO awareness class that AVFD put on last week. Hope there was some useful info gained. I have been testing this Pocket CO monitor from KWJ Engineering…and so far I think it would be a useful tool for all of your officers to have with them whenever they go to CO calls or any unknown illness call in residences for that matter. It is pretty simple to use and is inexpensive. It is also good because it monitors amount of cumulative CO exposure over a 12-hour period if necessary…”

The Pocket CO is the world’s smallest renewable Carbon Monoxide detector. Designed by leading engineers in the air quality and gas detection industry, and built using cutting edge nanotechnology, Pocket CO is advanced enough for use by industry professionals but still incredibly simple to operate. Tiny enough to fit on a keychain, and weighing under 1 ounce, Pocket CO is an easy and affordable way to detect CO and use a CO monitor at home, away, or on the job.

KWJ Engineering has been an industry leading provider of cutting edge sensor and instrument solutions for gas detection needs since 1993. Founded by Ken Johnson, an industry pioneer for over 60 years, and headed by Dr. Joseph Stetter, a world recognized sensor expert, KWJ Engineering offers products that meet industrial and consumer applications. The Pocket CO Model 300 is the third generation of this popular carbon monoxide detector, and its high performance bridges the gap between industrial users and every-day consumers. Ordering information can be found at www.detectcarbonmonoxide.com.

YORK, PA - Red Lion Controls, Inc. introduces USB option cards for the company’s CUB5 and PAX panel meters. These USB programming cards—one available for each meter—provide users with an efficient, cost-effective way to connect CUB5 and PAX meters to almost any computer, with no serial converters or other external devices needed. With this plug-and-play usability, USB option cards facilitate panel meter programming utilizing Red Lions free Crimson® software, allowing operators to set parameters, download configurations to panel meters and save program files on the computer for future reference.

By eliminating the need for serial-to-USB converters, CUB5 and PAX USB cards reduce programming time and hassle while saving labor and equipment costs. The cards can be purchased individually, requiring a user-supplied USB cord for operation, or users can select either a CUB5 or PAX programming kit. These kits include the respective USB option card, a USB connecting cable and the latest version of Crimson software.

The new USB option cards eliminate a full step in the panel meter programming process, allowing users to quickly connect our CUB5 and PAX meters directly to a PC—without first needing to send serial outputs through a USB converter, said Jeff Thornton, product manager for Red Lion. Both the CUB5 and PAX USB cards simply plug into the meters main circuit board. Once a USB card is installed, it appears as a virtual communications port, expediting meter configuration.

As a leading panel meter provider, Red Lion developed the CUB5 and PAX meters to offer dependable performance in a convenient package. The cost-effective CUB5 consumes less panel space than standard 1/8 DIN meters and offers a full feature set, with single or dual setpoint control output modules and optional RS232 or RS485 communication modules. The PAX meter provides a sunlight-readable display, accepts a broad range of inputs and delivers the widest variety of field-installable option cards, along with comprehensive communications capabilities. Boulder, CO. – Saint-Gobain Crystals has introduced a series of high-performance harmonic separators, optimized for use with high-power solid-state lasers.

These new Alpine Research Optics-brand products are all dichroic beamsplitters useful for either splitting or combining the various harmonics (1064 nm, 532 nm, 355 nm, and 266 nm) of Nd:YAG and Nd:YVO4 lasers. Both short-wave pass and long-wave pass designs are available.

Because of their combination of high-damage threshold and mechanical durability, these optics are particularly useful for demanding applications in semiconductor fabrication, display manufacturing, solar cell production and other micromachining tasks.

These beamsplitter coatings are typically supplied on flat substrates, with a high-efficiency anti-reflection coating on the second surface. Designs for both 0 degrees and 45 degrees incidence are available. Near-IR and visible wavelength optics are provided on optical grade fused silica substrates and optics for use with ultraviolet wavelengths are fabricated on UV grade fused silica substrates. Other standard specifications are ?/10 flatness (at 633 nm) and 10-5 surface quality.

Saint-Gobain Crystals is a world leader in the design and implementation of crystal-based technology for radiation detection, lasers and optics, sapphire substrates and reinforcements. Custom Solutions Available for High and Low Volume Applications

PALATINE, IL – Lumex today announced the launch of the QuantumBrite™ line of LED backlight technologies. Available in edge lit and chips on board formats in both white and vivid color options, the QuantumBrite line of backlight products provides more than twice the intensity of traditional backlights. In particular, the white QuatumBrite LEDs provide high-intensity brightness of up to 10,000 nits allowing for full daylight visibility. The QuantumBrite family is available in off-the-shelf sizes, and a U.S.-based team of experts is available to create semi- and custom- solutions for high or low volume specialty applications.

The QuantumBrite family represents a new generation of backlight technologies, ideal not only for traditional applications such as flat panel displays and indicator lighting, but also for non-traditional applications, such as logo enhancement or indirect lighting. Now homeowners can have LED panels installed in walls, reducing the need for floor lamps and introducing an innovative contemporary element into their living space. The QuantumBrite line of backlight products can also be used for non-traditional uses such as refrigerator walls, test and measurement applications for jewelry grading or microscopes.

“Whereas many LED backlight providers often require a 50,000 or 100,000 piece minimum order for customized LED backlight solutions, customized QuantumBrite backlight solutions can be completed for orders as small as 5,000 pieces, making this an ideal product and service for high-value, small volume applications such as medical devices, security equipment and industrial controls,” says Yasoob Ahmed, Manager of Display Technology at Lumex. “In addition to high-intensity light performance, what differentiates the QuantumBrite family of LED backlight technology is the fact that our U.S.-based team of specialists is available to provide expert system advice integrating a customer’s specifications for size, power and heat-management requirements, mounting needs, brightness targets and color selection to create a solution that is custom tailored to meet specific application needs.”

The QuantumBrite edge lit LED backlights are available in both with- and without-reflector formats. The reflector format captures more light than does the without-reflector format, and can enhance light output up to 20%.

LED backlights have several advantages over alternative backlight technologies, such as CCFL backlights. Unlike CCFL technologies, LED backlights are available in any color including tunable RGB, or even custom colors like pink, purple and turquoise because of the inherent nature of LEDs. Backlights are able to withstand both shock and vibration in some of the most demanding applications, and have an average lifespan of 100,000 hours – compared to the average CCFL lifespan of only 20,000 hours. LED backlights can also be produced in much smaller packaging than CCFLs, and are more environmentally friendly than CCFLs, which contain hazardous materials such as mercury.

The RoHS compliant QuantumBrite LED backlights range in size from 1×1 inch to10×10 inches. Samples of these devices are available from stock, with custom production quantities in 6-8 weeks and standard production quantities in 4-6 weeks. Pricing is dependent on quantity ordered, and is approximately $1 to $20 per unit in production quantities dependent on size, color and quantity ordered.
