Plane crash blamed on 'turbulence' from wind farm

A pilot injured in a crash landing has claimed a “violent” gust which caused him to lose control of his plane may have been caused by a nearby windfarm. ...According to an Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) report he said he believed "turbulence effects" from the windfarm may have contributed to the loss of control. The report concluded that while "the possibility of encountering wake turbulence from the windfarm at this airfield is remote, it cannot be entirely ruled out".

County by county, solar panels face pushback

It’s an environmental clash that neither side wanted: Solar advocates are squaring off against conservationists. ...NBC News counted 57 cities, towns and counties across the country where residents have proposed solar moratoriums since the start of 2021, according to local news reports, and not every proposed ban gets local news coverage. At least 40 of those approved the measures. Other localities did so in earlier years. That resistance is a threat to the big ambitions of the solar energy movement.

Windaction Group opposes Massachusetts removal of offshore wind price cap

In the 5 years from 2015 to 2019, Massachusetts ratepayers were billed over $4 billion in above market energy costs to support state-mandated renewable energy policies. Much of this higher cost has been shielded by persistently low natural gas prices, but this is changing quickly as the US enters a period of higher priced energy. Residential electricity prices in the Commonwealth are one of the highest in the country. By removing the price cap, state lawmakers all but ensure residents will pay even higher rates.

Jennifer Miller with Hoosiers for Reliable Energy, formerly Hoosiers for Home Rule, said that SB 411 “is a love letter to wind and solar industries and a blatant disregard for rural Hoosiers.” She felt the bill tilted the playing field toward renewables and away from neighboring property owners, she added. Her resistance was echoed by Joan Null, a resident of Whitley County. Null said that “on behalf of thousands of rural Hoosiers,” she was asking committee members “to find your spine and vote against this bill.”

Graveyard of the green giants: It's the hidden cost of our dash for windpower

Right across the road from the town cemetery in Sweetwater, Texas, sits another graveyard where the dead are never buried. Some 4,000 worn-out giant wind turbine blades are piled as far as the eye can see, taking up most of a 25-acre field. ...While there's growing pressure for this practice to end, in the absence of an effective way of recycling them, the alternative could be something like the hideous sight at Sweetwater. 'It's amazing what we waste,' sighs Christina Speck, a local teacher and mother, as she drives past the blade dump, one of two on the outskirts of Sweetwater.

"We want to make sure we preserve farm land. You just won't receive the subsidies to do that, if you remove productive agriculture land from production." Tiffany said utility companies who are putting solar and wind projects on farm land are driving up the price for renting property, because they are getting the subsidy they use to pay for the land.

Researchers said the "constraint payments", which are ultimately added to consumer bills, were being fuelled by a high concentration of onshore wind farms in Scotland often leaving the electricity grid unable to cope on windy days.
