That area use to be the village of Mattsville. Several mills, post office, general store. The store was owned by Matt Richardson. The village took its name from him. W.D. Rooker built the first mill in 1831 or 32. This was the first public mill in hamilton county. William Conner had a grist mill first but this was his mill and useing it deppended on what mood he was in! The remains of this mill (rotting posts) can be seen in the river along the trails in the park. There was also a saw installed and they where utilizing the trees on the property. Along the trails you can see many of the trees that had been cut down but where not used for timbers. The mill was sold to Peter Wise and sons, Who ran it till it out-lived its usefullness and was abandond after time. A second much more advanced mill was built, on the other side of grey road where the golf corse is now, in 1840. Raymond Kinser was a land owner and a resident of the area. I looked at a portrait of him just the other day. I do not know when the village of Mattsville officaly died, or why, but i have found it on a map as late as 1922. It did not have a railroad stop and its very close to the city of Carmel. Maybee it just became obsolete!

They closed to "retire". I am heartbroken. During the week the buffet was "normal" but Saturdays and Sundays the place EXPLODED with traditional ethnic offerings.

Anyone out there know where to go now?

Heather, I believe that what is written on the yellow pad is "Answered Prayers", the title of his new novel, which never gets written, the rest of the page being blank. Still he telephones Nell and tells her that he had "such a good morning writing" that he wants to celebrate by going to lunch.

I was born and raised in Marion. I remember back when I was a kid when they cut down the tree at the courthouse. I can say from experience that the lynching wasn't something that was viewed or put out there as historically important. But, Black folks passed the lessons leared from generation to generation. Depending on what that lesson was, baby boomers, generation x, and every generation afterwards will have perceptions of the event that may not be similar. In my family, it was used as a reminder of what some white men are capable of. Other lessons taught by black families were don't even act like you are friends with a white woman or "they" will kill you. Some of this all seems crazy to today's generation, but knowing the past is essential to building our future. Marion Indiana's history did not begin or end with this event. It's simply a part of it all which can not and should not be ignored.
Marion now has the Urban League and NAACP. you will be hard pressed to find a town Marion's size with both of this organizations. My point, these organizations effected my upbringing as much as the lynchings did and we might not of had either one there if it wasn't for the public exposure of the lynching and the outrage it produced.

I loved this store!! It was my favorite grocery store in Chicago. I just found it closed. They had the best items for such good prices. They made eating organic afforable. The coupons also kept me coming back again and again.

I am trying to remember the name of a carry-out pizza place on Shadeland. I seem to remember that it was an A-frame like building (maybe not)and was just south of Pendleton Pike on the east side of the street. Any help?
