California Capital Airshow Inspires a ‘Positive Altitude’ and a View from Above

As part of the annual event, 25 students will take to the skies, and for some, this may be the first and only time they experience the opportunity of flight

On Sunday, May 19, the California Capital Airshow, presented by Sacramento County, hosted over 250 young people from around the area and gave them an opportunity that many could only dream of. As part of a joint effort, the California Capital Airshow, Sacramento Jet Center and many other caring community partners introduced regional youth to an eye-opening day of endless opportunity and inspiration. Life-changing possibilities awaited them with colorful airplanes, helicopters, police and fire vehicles, and so much more. Aptly named ‘Positive Altitude’ this was the event’s third year to open the minds of disadvantaged youth that otherwise may never have such an opportunity.

Statistics show that exposure to such unique and interactive experiences expand a young person’s imagination and broadens their outlook on life, as well as their view of the world. ‘Positive Altitude’ isn’t just about aviation or the thrill of flying; this event is much more than that. It is about the opportunities that lie ahead if young people are given the tools to succeed. Half the battle is exposing children to life beyond their neighborhood, the latest gang, or their family legacy. With this unique event we hope to truly inspire kids to strive for a better life and achieve the greatness that we all know they possess.

In addition to the wide variety of aircraft on display, dozens of training aircraft were on standby at the Sacramento Jet Center, each with an experienced instructor pilot to take 25 selected students on a 30-minute introductory flight. These lucky essay winners received hands on experience and truly felt the thrill of flying an airplane! Each student pilot received a ‘First Flight’ certificate and pilot’s log book signed by their instructor. Lunch, refreshments, t-shirts for the kids, games, and interactive opportunities such as unique aircraft and vehicle displays, police cars, fire trucks and more were available to guests of the event. Dusty, star of Disney’s Planes to appear in Dayton

Dayton, Ohio – The summer release of Disney’s Planes, the animated comedy adventure from above the world of the popular 2006 film Cars, has the entire aviation community buzzing. Disney’s Planes captures all of the thrill and excitement that flying has to offer—plus a lot of heart and humor.

For thousands of air show attendees, the movie will jump to life with Dusty’s flying performance at select air shows across the country. Dusty will show off his talents, communicate with the crowd and be accompanied by an exclusive and uplifting Disney musical score.

In addition, the movie will come to life with a colorful interactive display that will be loaded with activities. The display, which is a great attraction for children and adults alike, will feature stickers, tattoos, coloring sheets and more featuring all of the characters from Disney’s Planes.

Disney’s Planes is a great underdog story, said director and aviation enthusiast Klay Hall. “It has a lot of heart and a message we can all use: If we can believe in ourselves, step out of our comfort zones and get past whatever fear is holding us back, we’d be surprised with the results. And that’s exactly what happens to Dusty in this movie. He’s a crop duster who’s never flown above 1,000 feet, but he dreams of being the fastest air racer in the world. He has a lot of obstacles to overcome and needs to dig pretty deep to find the courage to become more than he was built for.”

“The Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger is a wonderful family event and we are absolutely thrilled to be a part of the ultimate family experience with this very special appearance of Dusty from Disney’s Planes. Along with Dusty, the 2013 Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger takes off on June 22nd and 23rd at the Dayton International Airport. Tucker to the only flying B-29 Superfortress in the world, "FIFI", to a first ever demonstration of the MiG-17. The owner and pilot of the aircraft tapped to play the role of Dusty in the air show performances is Texas-based aerial applicator Rusty Lindeman, who customized one of his own Air Tractor AT-301 airplanes to match Dusty’s paint scheme and features. Manufactured in Olney, Texas, Air Tractor aircraft are used for agricultural spraying, seeding and fertilizing, plus forestry protection, fire fighting and more in the U.S. and more than 30 countries around the world. “We’re happy to help bring Dusty to life for the performances and hope that the audience will have fun and learn a bit more about the importance of aerial application in modern agriculture,” said Air Tractor’s Kristin Edwards. Air Tractor's founder, Leland Snow, designed, built and flew his own purpose-built crop duster in 1953 and devoted his career to designing bigger and better aircraft for aerial application.
