Matt Younkin was injured while flying the Younkin Mullicoupe on Tuesday afternoon. During his flight he experienced a loss of power and was forced into an emergency landing near a model airplane field south of his home in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Matt's injuries are non-life threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2010 airshow season. - Custom Painted Boeing 717 Takes to the Air -

ORLANDO, Fla. (November 10, 2009) – AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI), and the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts today unveiled a custom painted, one-of-a-kind Boeing 717 honoring the airline’s partnership with the team.

Members of the Indianapolis Colts offensive line were on hand to reveal the plane, which will be seen by millions of people as it serves cities on AirTran Airways’ route network of more than 60 destinations.
“AirTran’s strong commitment to the Indianapolis community and to the Colts will now be more evident than ever to our customers all over the nation,” said Tad Hutcheson, AirTran Airways’ vice president of marketing and sales. “There’s nothing like seeing your favorite team’s plane take flight whether you’re at home or on the road.”

To celebrate the unveiling of this special aircraft and to benefit the community, the team mascot, Blue, and the Colts cheerleaders demonstrated their strength, literally, by pulling the 120,000 pound aircraft more than 20 feet for charity. The airline acknowledged this successful attempt with a $10,000 donation to the D.R.E.A.M. Foundation and AlIie & Friends.

“The Colts Organization is thrilled with the relationship that we have with AirTran Airways. The commitment by AirTran Airways to create the “Colts-themed plane” (Colts 1) is very exciting and a humbling tribute to our partnership and fans,” said Tom Zupancic, Indianapolis Colts senior vice president of sales and marketing.

This is the third of a special series of custom painted AirTran Airways aircraft. On October 13, AirTran unveiled Falcons 1 in Atlanta, and on October 27, Ravens 1 was unveiled in Baltimore.

Today, Nov. 11, please join the Museum in recognizing the contributions of America's veterans at our annual Veterans Day Ceremony, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Side Gallery. Medal of Honor recipient, retired Army Maj. Gen. Pat Brady will be the keynote speaker. The ceremony will be complemented with a performance by the Boeing Employees' Concert Band.

Celebrate the Apollo missions as the Seattle Symphony Pacific Northwest Orchestra and the Boeing Band perform the opening bars of Also Sprach Zarathustra; Dvorak's 9th symphony, 4th movement; and Mars from Holst's The Planet. Performance conducted by the Seattle Symphony's Gerard Schwarz. Performance is on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 11:15 - 11:45 a.m. in the Side Gallery.

Also on Saturday, at 2 p.m., a panel of flyers who saw action in the skies over North Vietnam, including helicopter pilots Mike Brown, Pat Staeheli and Steve Vermillion, as well as B-52 pilot Jim Farmer. The panel will be moderated by Greg Pierce.

Legendary space industry engineer Thomas J. O'Malley, 94, died Friday evening, shortly after a phone call from Mercury astronaut and former U.S. Sen. John Glenn, whom O'Malley launched into space in 1962 by pushing a button.

Let me start off by wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving coming up in 25 days or so. The Blue Crew highly recommends Diestel Farms turkeys for Thanksgiving. They can be obtained at most high quality grocery outlets.
Last month I said I would talk about the future plans for Blue Thunder II, and I will when those plans are a little firmer. So, this month I would like to talk a little bit about our Air Data Computer (ADC) and the Telemetry system used in Blue Thunder II. The amount of data that can be recorded by the ADC is limited only by the number of sensors positioned throughout the aircraft. About a hundred and twenty selectable parameters are transmitted to the ground via a two way communications modem that can be monitored by the ground crew in real time as long as the antenna in the aircraft is in line of sight of the base station antenna. When the system is fully developed, all the crew needs the pilot for is the hit the starter button. With the currant development of the ADC, the crew monitors critical parameters of the engine, such as oil pressure and temperature, as well the aircraft location, speed, altitude, lap count and lap speeds. ...

Margaret A. Hamilton Tunner, a member of the World War II-era Women's Airforce Service Pilots program, died Oct. 13 at her home in Virginia at age 92. During the war, she flew P-39, P-40, P-47, B-17, and B-24 aircraft, ferrying them from the factory to either coast. She also piloted a new P-51 to Canada. After the war, she served with US occupation forces in Japan, and, in 1951, married Lt. Gen. William Tunner, the architect of the Berlin Airlift. Her interest in flying continued and in her 70s she learned to fly ultralights, while at 78 she co-piloted an F-15 out of Langley AFB, Va., courtesy of the Clinton Administration. Congress just this past summer approved a special Congressional Gold Medal recognizing the service of all the WASPs.

A Step Back In Time via Views From The Left Seat
Well, my last two posts chronicled a flight sequence over to London and back.
Now it's time to share the layover experience.
Similar to an earlier post from a couple of months ago, this one is all about the photos.
I had always wanted to visit the Royal Air Force Museum in North London. It is located on the historic site of the London Aerodrome at Hendon.
So instead of a nap upon arriving at our hotel, I hopped on the "tube" and in 45 minutes I was in North London. A short walk later and I was there.

I am the first pilot in all the generations of my family. So there really wasn't anybody who influenced me. For the sake of full disclosure, I won't for a second claim to have found this video myself. In fact, I saw it on Airliners.net thread yesterday and thought it would make a fantastic Movie Monday. Airline, a documentary by the BBC, takes you inside the life of British Airways long-haul pilots (in five parts) as they fly the 747-200 from London Heathrow to Bangkok and then on to Sydney as Speedbird 009.
Perhaps most timely is the section on pilot fatigue and boredom in the wake of the Northwest 188 incident. The discussion centers around the increasing role of aircraft automation and the role of pilots in the cockpit as systems operators rather than aviators. Save for the aircraft types in question, the topics of discussion remain just as relevant today as they did two decades ago.
