The movie is a not only a celebration of the cultural icon created by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, but a fairly in-depth look at the people who helped bring Indiana Jones to life both on and off the big screen. Kleyla, who was too young to see any of the original three Indy films in theaters, fell head over heals for Indy when he first watched the Indiana Jones stunt show at Disney's MGM Studios. Sine then, Kleyla has amassed what is reported to be one of the largest Indiana Jones memorabilia collections in the world.

Kleyla's film chronicles many facets of Indyfandom, including Deborah Nadoolman-Landis' design and creation of Indiana Jones' wardrobe, Disney Imagineers Tony Baxter and Tim Kirk's contributions to creating the various Indiana Jones themed shows and rides in the Disney parks, and numerous fan experiences ranging from Dads who took their little kids to watch filming of the new movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in New Haven to Lucas and Spielberg's Kingdom of the Crystal Skull announcements at 2007's San Diego Comic Con.

Kleyla told the audience that the reason he only had an hour to show is that this footage only represents a few of the highlights he strung together strictly for screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival. He says he continues to edit it and is indeed still filming pieces through July. I suspect he couldn't in good faith complete this ultimate fan documentary of Indiana Jones without covering the opening of the new movie. The mention of "filming through July" leads me to wonder if Brandon also plans to cover Indy-related happenings at this year's San Diego Comic Con (rumor is that there will be an Indiana Jones panel in addition to other confirmed things.)

Also attending the film's screening were costumed actors dressed as the titular archaeologist, Marion Ravenwood, The Monkey Man (from Raiders), Willie Scott (Temple of Doom), Short Round, and even a guy dressed as Mutt Williams, the character being played by Shia LeBeouf in in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

After the film as a Q&A session with the filmmakers and some of the film's guests, including Tony Baxter and Tim Kirk.

I got this nifty Indyfans t-shirt for correctly guessing a few questions in the Indy Trivia game we played inthe theater before the screening.

The plan is to show this one hour footage of the film again outside the Big Newport theater at Fashion Island in Newport Beach just before the midnight showing of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on May 21. So, if you're in the Orange County area, be sure to at least stop by and check it out. According to the Indyfans website, the screening of Brandon's film will be outside the theater, so in theery, you shouldn't even need a ticket to the new Indy film to enjoy the screening of Brandon's fanumentary.

Filmmakers, Imagineers, and Playmates...oh my!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoOMX4fEwlc/SByk7Z9z3nI/AAAAAAAAAD8/kppfOmBtEy8/s320/IMG_2983.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196209410568085106" />
What do Filmmakers, Imagineers, and Playmates have in common? They were all at the world premiere sneak peak of Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory. On April 27th, an hour of the new hit documentary Indyfans was shown to a crowd of over 400 people at the Historic Lido Theater in Newport Beach, California.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoOMX4fEwlc/SBylq59z3oI/AAAAAAAAAEE/WVCOD7bsGlI/s320/IMG_2976.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196210226611871362" />
The day started out when Indy, Marion, Willie, Mutt, The Monkey Man, and even Short Round made their way down the red carpet. As the show got closer to beginning, not only did the public begin to line up down the block, but the celebs started to arrive as well. Angel Parinno, Bridget Marquardt, and Holly Madison from "The Girls Next Door" hit the red carpet, and boy did the cameras start clicking! The girls all sported their "safari-esque" outfits, and of course, their fedoras! Soon after the girls made their way into the theater, Walt Disney Imagineers Tony Baxter and Tim Kirk were on hand, as was Indyfan and artist Adam McDaniel, and even Google Me director Jim Kileen.

Once inside the theater, the guests were greeted by the Indy characters and the Indy girls, and plays a few rounds of Indy trivia, got some prizes, and then it was time to start the show! Newport Beach Film Festival Director of Programming, Erik Forssell, welcome the audience to the festival and introduced Indyfans director Brandon Kleyla. After a few brief words, the lights began to dim, and for the next hour, we got to reminisce in all the old memories that we have from the Indy films! We got to hear some great stories and even see some things NEVER before seen on film! The film played beautifully and the audience loved it! Laughing, crying, you name it! The screening could not have gone any better!!

"We were really happy to see that Brandon treated the subject of Indy fandom with great creativity, humor, warmth and, most importantly, respect; not as just another fannish freak show." --Tim Kirk
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoOMX4fEwlc/SByoL59z3qI/AAAAAAAAAEU/7dcAkaWuSVk/s320/IMG_3381.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196212992570810018" />

After the film, there was a Q&A panel with director Brandon Kleyla, artist Adam McDaniel, Imagineers Tony Baxter and Tim Kirk, and co-stars Steven Melching and Daren Dochterman. Guests were also given a limited edition Newport Beach Film Festival poster, and had the opportunity to have it signed by everyone on hand.

If you missed the screening, don't fear. Dvd plans are underway! BUT, what if you want to see it on a big screen!? Well fear no more folks. On May 21st, at the Big Newport Theater in Newport Beach, California, they will be showing an Encore Performance of Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory. Events will be going on throughout the week, starting on May 16th until May 21st. On May 21st, prior to the midnight showing of "Crystal Skull," the audience will have the chance to see this hour sneak peak once again! So get your tickets for the midnight showing of "Crystal Skull" on the 21st and Indyfans is included!

Stay tuned to the website for more late breaking news, as well as a detailed list of events as we get closer to the big day!!

NEWS about Disneylands Indiana Jones Project!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoOMX4fEwlc/SCOcGECFjnI/AAAAAAAAAEc/wAjWKkbqfE8/s320/2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5198170022891327090" />

Apparently, everything that we've read online that says there's an Indy Stunt Show coming to Disneyland, is not true! It's false! Lies I say!

Indy is indeed coming to Disneyland, and I recently had a talk with the one of the TOP MEN on the Creative Team of the "Indiana Jones: Summer of Hidden Mysteries," and we were able to clarrify a lot!

First off, get ready to start seeing "Adventure Maps" in the park. I'm not really sure what exactly these will be, but I'm guessing they could be a typical Disneyland park map with an Indy-esque overlay, or possibly an Adventureland specific map, similar to the one they recently released for Tom Sawyers Island / Pirates Lair.

Secondly, the Adventure kicks off on...you guessed it, May 22nd! As if we Indyfans don't have enough going on that day! Yep, May 22nd is the day that Indy returns to the big screen and will be making his appearance on the crowded streets of Adventureland!

Now lets talk a little about the show! While most Disney message boards have painted the image of this being a full out stunt show, that is not the case. Nor is it the case that there would be a show similar to the recent Pirates Lair show. Not even that scale. Why? Because we're in Adventureland. The smallest area of the park, and certainly the most populated. "We already have the Indy attraction in Adventureland, that's the big one. Our "show" is made to compliment the attraction," says the Creative Team Member.

The Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries will be made of 2 different street shows! I don't know if I'm right, but I'm thinking they could be similar to the shows seen at the Disney Hollywood Studios on Sunset Blvd, or maybe even like "Laughing Stock" in Frontierland!

So what can we expect to see on May 22nd?? Well lets start with one show, the one that involves the female Archaeologist. Aparently, she gathers up some kids for an expedition, and they set off to find some artifacts in Adventureland. Only in the end, she pulls an Elsa Schnieder, double crossing her dig team. But don't fear, Indy makes an appearance and sets things straight!

The second show involves Indy, who is going after an artifact, but beware, Bad Guys are right around the corner, trying to get the artifact for themselves! This will consist of some hand-to-hand combat, on the rooftops, on the balconies, and possibly even on the rope bridge in Tarzan's Treehouse... Well, we all know how Indy will get out of that one! How awesome would that be?

Behind-the-scenes, I've been told that all members of the creative team are very much into making this an amazing experience for guests. The Creative Team Member continued by saying that "even members of the Art Department were coming over and saying they HAD to be a part of it, that it had to be true to the characters, that certain things would, or would not, happen in the world of Indiana Jones!"

That even while it may not be a large scale show, there will be a lot of "layers" to it. There will be little "things" added into Adventureland that only the die hard Indyfans will understand! So if this is done correctly, it could be very cool to find more Indy relics in Adventureland. All that's there now is the "Coronado" life saver that can be seen on the dock from the Jungle Cruise!

Long story short, the Disney Entertainment Department is very dedicated to making this a great addition to the summer entertainment. This will NOT be a permanent addition to the park, and is just a summer promotional piece and no word yet on how long it will stay, so be sure you don't miss it on May 22nd!!

Stay tuned to www.indyfansfilm.com for more info!!

Brandon Kleyla talks with INDY CAST!

In the latest episode of Indy Cast, they speak with IndyFans director Brandon Kleyla, find out about the Indy IV soundtrack, take a look at the Last Crusade wave of Indy figures, learn about more Indy food tie-in giveaways and discover why Harrison Ford's hidden talent is ironing! It features deft directing, stellar acting and breathtaking scenery. Great movie?

Well, no — at least not if the yardstick of magnificence is the sort of rabid cinema idolatry on display recently at Legoland California. When was the last time you saw someone dress the part of lanky Peter O'Toole done up as Lawrence?

For real devotion, you need to look down. Way down.

"Indy!" squeaks the pint-size toddler dressed from head to toe like Harrison Ford's adventuring alter ego, Indiana Jones. And that's about all he says, letting the gawking and gasping —Just look at that tiny hat! That impossibly cute whip! — speak for itself.

"He likes the mine-car chase scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," says the boy's father, Brandon McClintock, 32, a FedEx courier, one in a stream of self-described "Indyfans" from around Southern California who came to talk trivia, swap leads on gear and generally come out of their Indy-love closet.

"I've loved this series since I was a kid, and it's great to be able to share it with my son. I'm just glad my wife went along with the name."

Right, the name. McClintock named the tyke Harrison after his wife balked at Indiana.

By any hard-core standards of fandom, few movies can compete with the devotion summoned up by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones trilogy, which on May 22 adds a long-awaited fourth — and final? — chapter to its thrills-and-spills saga.

No stereotypes fit this gathering: The crowd included kids, parents, artists, military types and fashion models. Their lone bond was a guy with a five o'clock shadow and a lust for antiquities.

The Star Wars and Star Trek series are famous for their fans. But Indy devotees politely and proudly separate themselves from folks who prefer films set in an era of intergalactic travel.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoOMX4fEwlc/R_wnail3LNI/AAAAAAAAADI/uGCfLzS17Sk/s320/indyfans-duox-large.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187064207739661522" />

"We're not like Trekkies, because for one, our movies are rooted in history, not a made-up universe," says illustrator Renee Rose-Perry, 27, whose eerie resemblance to actress Karen Allen — Indy's first love interest — is hammered home by her costume, a Middle Eastern number straight from the series debut, 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark. "Indy lives in a real world. My interest in biblical studies was sparked by those movies."

'Fanaticism like a virus'

Fellow die-hard Christopher Postigo, 11, is a dead ringer — Yankees baseball cap and all — for Short Round from Temple of Doom. "I just can't wait for the next movie," he says. "Without it, I think we'd start losing fans."

Not likely. Around the world, Indyfans gather virtually on sites such as IndyGear.com and TheRaider.net. The former offers discussions on matters such as The Fedora, while the latter is an all-things-Indy clearinghouse that prominently displays a clock counting down the seconds until the premiere of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And then there are those occasions that prompt face-to-face meetings, perhaps chief among them comic book and fantasy film powwows.

"Whether you're talking about Star Wars or Hellboy or Indiana Jones, there are franchises out there that generate fanaticism like a virus," says Lance Fensterman, manager of New York Comic Con, which runs April 18-20 (and is not affiliated with the longer-running Comic-Con International in San Diego).

"Of course, you have to start with a great movie. But beyond that, you have to look at the porous nature of the dialogue between the fans and the creators. People like Lucas encourage fans to express how they feel, and those exchanges increase the sense of ownership in a series."

The level of Indy fanaticism is embodied in Rob Browning. By day, he works for a large auto manufacturer, but he dedicates nighttime hours to a labor of love: a full-size model of the fictional archaeologist that will be clothed in gear made by the same companies that supplied the filmmakers.

"The real jackets and whips used in the movies can get $30,000 to $50,000 at auction, but generally a few hundred will buy you what you need," says Browning, 40, who quickly launches into other Indy trivia, including the fact that Ford wasn't Lucas' first choice for the role. ("He tried to get Peter Coyote and Tim Matheson. It'd be like seeing Back to the Future without Michael J. Fox.")

Fellow fan Michael Trotochaud, 32, is in the Coast Guard, where he doesn't exactly talk up his Indy love. "I've actually got a $400 hat, a 16 mm print of one of the movies that cost me $700, and then, of course, I've spent a whole lot of time cracking whips," he says with a smile.

Though she hasn't set a manicured nail on a whip to date, Joanie Dodds, 26, is just as enamored of the series, particularly the dark Doom installment.

"My girlfriends and I used to make up names for all the poor little kids enslaved in the mines," she says. "I guess what we loved then and love now is the fact that, in this age of special effects, there was just a simplicity to the drama. There were bats and snakes and falling bridges. And we always wondered what those actors were eating instead of real monkey brains."

Dodds can't wait for the new film. She has a thing for co-star Shia LaBeouf; blog rumor has it that his character could be Dr. Jones' son. "If you talk to him, please give him my number," she says. He might want it: Dodds' latest gig was as a competitor on Tyra Banks' show, America's Next Top Model.

'Indyfans': The movie

On hand to document this meeting of die-hard Indyfans was Brandon Kleyla, 24, also an avowed fan and an actor. (He starred as the young version of Ian McKellen's character in the 1998 film Gods and Monsters.)

Last summer, he decided to make a documentary about the felt-hatted faithful; Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory premieres later this month at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

"I started doing this just for fun, but I quickly found out that these movies have really gotten to people," Kleyla says. "I've talked to people who became archaeologists because of Indy, people who reunited with their fathers because of Indy and his dad in The Last Crusade. The character just moves people."

Kleyla's own induction into the Indy family began when he was 6 when he repeatedly took in an Indiana Jones attraction at Disney World in his native Florida.

"That set the hook. Then I just couldn't get enough of these movies. I mean, how cool. Indy gets to travel the word, do good, find treasure, all while getting the crap beaten out of him," says Kleyla, whose particular hobby is collecting Indiana Jones toys, most of which predate him

In fact, that ability to take a punch and feel it seems at the core of the character's appeal.

"There are two kinds of guys, James Bond guys and Indiana Jones guys," says Will Graves, 47, who tends bar in a nearby town. "Bond guys are meticulous and precise. But Indy guys are human. They may even bungle things, but in the end, they get the job done."

Graves, a barrel-chested man dressed in full Indy finery, interrupts a spirited a cappella rendition of the John Williams Indiana Jones theme to add that he wears his whip to work.

"I used to crack it to clear the bar at closing, but the manager got a little nervous," he says with a grin. "But I still use it to break up fights. Trust me, people take notice."

Fans get cracking

Just as they're doing right now as Pony Horton sends his $350, 6-foot kangaroo-hide bullwhip snaking through the air. The ensuing "crack" causes the crowd to ooh and ahh.

"A cracked whip is traveling at over 700 mph," says Horton, 49, doing his best to channel Ford's gravelly voice during the demonstration. "That's like having a personal sonic boom in your pocket."

When Indy first hit the screen, Horton immediately bought a cheap bullwhip — arguably the most iconic Indy prop after the brown fedora — and promptly stung himself on the head. In time, he mastered the mostly-lost art of bullwhip cracking.

"I mean, this practice is so obscure now that I thought, 'Hey, great, I can do something that most people can't,' " the actor says.

"Indiana Jones is all about appreciating the mystery of ancient cultures and arts. I don't know if the Ark (of the Covenant) is real, but I want to believe it is."

As for the next film, Horton says he'll be pitching a tent in the ticket line alongside the other faithful. "The last time I did that was (in 1980) for The Empire Strikes Back," he says, nostalgia twinkling in his eyes.

"It's been a long time coming."

INDY IS HIS TEMPLE

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoOMX4fEwlc/R_Vd0yl3LLI/AAAAAAAAACY/A0a1vhquEjg/s400/indyfans.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185153707502152882" />

A documentary made by one of Indiana Jones’ biggest fans will premiere a month ahead of the theatrical debut of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 1:05 PM
By FilmStew Staff
IndyFansFilm.com Photo
(l to r) Fans Kleyla and Chris Devlin

Set to premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 27th, Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory is Brandon Kleyla’s life work. It began at age six when he cried himself through a showing of the "Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular" at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida, and continued on as he gathered up one of the largest collections of Indy memorabilia in the world.

Prior to the documentary, in which Kleyla sets out a la Roger and Me to discover the world of Indy and his fans, the filmmaker was perhaps best known for playing a younger version of Ian McKellen’s character James Whale in Gods and Monsters. This past weekend, on Saturday March 29th, Kleyla turned southern California’s Legoland into one big Indy theme park, with various folks wandering around during the day dressed as recognizable characters.

Unlike most geeky film fans, Kleyla has found a way to connect his passion to beautiful women. On his film’s official website is a section entitled "Indy Girls." There, you can click on one of 11 thematically outfitted pretties and find out, a la Playboy centerfold, about their Favorite Indy Movie, Favorite Indy Line, Favorite Indy Character, Best Indy Memory and theory on Why Indy Is Still Popular. The sub-section Favorite Thing To Do with a Bullwhip has been wisely omitted.

Among those interviewed in Indyfans are costume designer Deborah Nadoolman-Landis, husband and wife stunt team Vic Armstrong and Wendy Leech, Crystal Skull bullwhip trainer Anthony DeLongis and a pair of Walt Disney Imagineers. Brandon sent me these report and some photos to pass along the event to fans who couldn't make it out for the celebration.

It was a wonderful day that was also covered by USA Today, so expect to see the article both online and on newsstands on either Tuesday (April 1st) or Wednesday (April 2nd)!

With a park attendance peaking 11000 guests, INDYFANS DAY at Legoland California was a huge success. Guests were greeted by a group of adventurers that were in search of treasure, as well as Chris Devlin, an Indyfan dressed as everyone's favorite archaeologist, Indiana Jones. And if you had a quick eye, you could also catch The Monkey Man running around. But guests were being careful, as he was more than happy to hold ladies purses all day, or maybe even trade a monkey for their baby. Throughout the day, guests could meet Indy, Marion, Belloq, The Monkeyman, Short Round, and for the first time EVER, Mutt and Spalko!

Guests were also wowed by the skills of bullwhip artist Pony R. Mr. Horton showed everyone a few Indy-ish whip tricks, and also explained in detail what a bullwhip is and how it really works.

There was also Indy trivia that was taking place throughout the day! Prizes included Indyfans t-shirts, brown fedoras, LEGO Indiana Jones Temple sets, signed copies of "Indiana Jones: Off the Beaten Path," family 4-packs of tickets to Legoland, and more!

In association with Legoland , Indyfans gave out over 100 tickets to the Wishland Foundation. "This is a great organization and we were very proud to be a part of making this a special day for the kids" says Brandon Kleyla, Indyfans director. The gun that shot Lee Harvey Oswald, Elvis Presley's personal karate suit, Dick Tracy's yellow fedora and trenchcoat. It's a lot to take in, believe me. The Pugliese Pop Culture Collection is "purely and simply, the greatest pop culture collection ever!" Or at least that's what Guernsey's Auction House says, and I'd say I'd have to agree. To give you an idea of the size of this collection, the catalog alone is 4 pounds, and cost $40 dollars! The first item up for bid, an amazing, pristine, 1957 Original "Creature from the Black Lagoon" poster! What a wonderful way to start the auction! But that's not why I was there... So I sat, and waited...waited for items 237, 238, 239, and 240. The Holy Grail, The Grail Knight's Sword, a False Grail, and Indy Bullwhip! Just from standing in the gallery and watching bidders and curious onlookers throughout the day, you could help but notice that everyone's attention were on these items! These were obviously the pieces that every came to see. Members of the Guernsey's staff informed me that the Indy pieces were the most requested when it came to the press, wanting to grab images for the reports! Well hey, who could blame them?

About 3 hours into the auction, we had finally reached item 237. Prior to this piece, the room was pretty loose, with various people talking about the items that were passing. But when 237, The Holy Grail, came up, you could hear a pin drop! The item was estimated to go for 8000-10'000 dollars. Well folks, the bidding began! It quickly began to climb...Bidders that were present in the room, bidders on the phones, bidders online... Indy mania had begun at the Palms hotel! After about four minutes, the auction was coming to a close...What was originally supposed to sell for a maximum of ten thousand, had just found a new home, and a new owner, for the price of 37'000 dollars!

These were also the first items in the auction that the audience felt that were worthy of applause! The insanity continued for three more items, all of which gained applause. It was an amazing and very cool experience for an Indyfan to witness. And thanks to the people at Guernsey's, you will see ALL of the excitement in "Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory."

The Land of Adventure

Indyfans is proud to be able to assist LegoLand California with their opening of "The Land of Adventure" on March 10th, 2008.

Transporting you into 1920s Egypt, Land of Adventure will be comprised of four new attractions including our first-ever dark ride, Lost Kingdom Adventure. Based in ancient temple ruins, Lost Kingdom Adventure puts you inside an all-terrain roadster and takes you on a journey to recover stolen treasure by blasting targets with laser guns along the way. Your score is recorded and competition is fierce as skill and determination are the keys to a successful expedition. Brave riders encounter ten different scenes along the journey including a spider’s lair, professor’s lab, mummy relics and a skeleton band that requires riders to hit the correct targets to make the band play. A LEGO® pharaoh, standing more than 16-feet tall, guards the entrance to Lost Kingdom Adventure staring down at all those who dare enter.

We hope to see you all on March 10th. And of course, INDYFANS will be on hand with free limited edition Indyfans posters, and many more surprises! You won't want to miss out!!

More reviews on Cool Toy Review!

Chris Perley returns with another review, this time he looks at the LEGO "Escape from the Lost Tomb" playset. I'd never met Steven Spielberg before, and he called me out of the blue. I almost felt like saying, "Oh yeah, Steven Spielberg… uh-huh." Anyway, we had a chat and he said, "Do you want to come make a film for me?" I said, "Well, that sounds very inviting." "In Peru…" I said, "In Peru! Yes, that sounds extremely inviting." We looked into it and there were various things about it — like the time I had to be on set — where I thought, "No, this isn't going to work out." But then I was advised by everybody that it'd be a good thing to do. And I did enjoy it. I mean, look, talk about standing the chance of succeeding on the level that it's intended to succeed…

Not many actors would have thought twice, as it sounds like you did, about accepting a role in an Indiana Jones adventure…

I want to be careful here, because I don't want to make it sound as if I'm anti- the film — I'm not at all. But if I was asked what I would choose to do, it would be lightweight for me, at least for that sort of time commitment. But having accepted it, I enjoyed working with Steven hugely, and we had a great cast. I just wish we'd had something of fabulous interest between each other to act!

Did they show you the entire script?

I said, "I can't do it without seeing a script." They wanted everybody to do it without seeing a script because Steven — you know, "God" — was doing it. And I said, "Well, I need to have a little bit of previous knowledge even if God is doing it." So they sent a courier over with the script from Los Angeles, gave it to me at three o'clock in the afternoon in London, collected it again at eight o'clock in the evening, and he returned the next day to Los Angeles. So that was an expensive read.

Of course, you're not allowed to reveal anything under pain of death…

Well, we signed something. I suppose if I said things that were explicit, they would beat down on me.

A recent report pegs you as Abner Ravenwood, the father of Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood and Indy's mentor. The man Marion also tells Indy is dead in Raiders of the Lost Ark…

[A big grin spreads across Hurt's face] Hmmmm….

Okay, you won't divulge. What was it like working with Harrison Ford?

I've not a bad word to say about Harrison. He's a proper leading actor. He led the company. He knows the franchise backwards, but he's never cocky with it, he's hard-working, funny, self-deprecatory, utterly charming.

Were you amazed what he gets up to in the film when he's practically the same age as you?

He's younger than me. He's 65, I'm 67. [laughs] Junior… He always was two years younger than me. I told him that when he had his birthday. I said, "You're still younger than me, it doesn't matter how old you get." But he was fabulous, and he was fit, and he did all his fights. I mean, it was fantastic to watch.

How much action does your character see?

Well, I'm all in the second half. I'm one of what I called the Famous Five. You know, [from Enid Blyton's ripping adventure series] "The Famous Five came home tired but happy." [laughs] There was Harrison. There was the wonderful Shia LaBeouf, who also was very impressive. He's very perceptive, smart, again not at all cocky — none of those precocious, unfortunate traits. There was Cate [Blanchett] — ah, no, she wasn't in the Famous Five. It was Karen [Allen], me, Harrison, Shia, and Ray Winstone, who is one of the Famous Five but dodgy.

How was it working with God, a.k.a. Spielberg?

He has the extraordinary knack of being able to make you feel as though you've worked with him ten times before, as though you've known him all his life. That's a great quality for a director to possess. And his notes are very good — very simple, but very good. He doesn't hang about. When he's got it, he's got it.

Did you see George Lucas around much?

Occasionally. George is a bit socially crippled really. Not good with people. So I just left him alone.

Are they doing it the old-fashioned way as opposed to relying on CGI?

They shot as much as they possibly could, but they had some massive blue screens. There will be CGI, but it's based on a lot of the stuff that we shot, so it's not pure CGI. It's overlayed and so on. Steven does shoot as much as he possibly can and that's impressive. I mean we shot on five major Hollywood studios. We shot at Downey, Sony, Paramount, Warners, and Universal, either in their studios or the outside lots. We'd do two days here, then trot off and do a week there and then back to this one, while the other sets were being prepared. And the sets were fantastic, full of moving parts and things that all worked. You suddenly realized that you're almost a puppet. You come on and do your bit, and then you're off to the next one.

And how was Peru?

We never went to Peru in the end! They didn't dare, unfortunately. So we were on the lot the whole time, although we did go to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. But that's not Peru!

Director Brandon Kleyla on TheRaider.net

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoOMX4fEwlc/R2hT-8yIL_I/AAAAAAAAAB0/mIZe-qg7LSM/s320/raider2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145454915204165618" />

This summer saw the launch of two Indiana Jones films that fans have been dying to see. That's right, I said two! One, the long awaited fourth installment of intrepid archeologist in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull starring Harrison Ford and the other you might not have heard about yet, but you soon will. Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory, is a documentary about Indiana Jones fans made by "Indy Fans".

The film is a labor of love by filmmaker/actor, Brandon Kleyla, who has been acting since age 3, and appeared in such films as Free Enterprise, Children of the Corn IV and Gods and Monsters. Brandon set out this year to make Indyfans, to be the ultimate retrospective on Indiana Jones.

Our paths crossed this June when Brandon began reading my set reports on the filming of Indiana Jones 4 in New Haven, CT on TheRaider.net and flew in to interview me and other fans on the making of the film. Recently, I turned the tables on Brandon for this exclusive interview on Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory. Enjoy!

Brandon, can you tell me when you first discovered the character of Indiana Jones?

It was 1989. I was still living in Florida, close to Disney world. When MGM Studios opened I remember my parents wanting to see this show called the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. I was only 6 at the time, and I remember watching the opening boulder scene and crying my eyes out because it was so loud. I had no idea what I was watching. When we got back home, I was quickly sat down to Raiders of the Lost Ark and that was the beginning of my long love for Indiana Jones.

What attracted to you to Indiana Jones and these films as opposed to other film heroes?

I would honestly say the stunt show at DisneyWorld in Florida. Being 6 when introduced to the character, I really loved the fact that I could go and SEE that excitement and adventure in front of me. And as far as I was concerned, that was Indiana Jones in front of me. For a little kid, being able to meet Indiana Jones was pretty darn cool. Not only that, but that was really my first introduction to seeing how movies were made. I really give Disney and the Indy show a lot of credit for me wanting to learn more about making movies!

What is your connection to the Indiana Jones fan base? Collector? Film buff?

I really only became involved with the Indy fan base about 5 or 6 years ago. Before that, I didn't know there really was a fan base. I just assumed it was my Dad and I. Once the Internet came into play, I found that there were more people who shared a love for Indiana Jones. Then I stumbled onto Club Obi-Wan, where I'm a frequent post-er, I started to contribute little bits and pieces to The Indy Experience and TheRaider.net, and I've really thrown myself in the middle of it all, especially now with the documentary in full swing.

What started you on the path to making IndyFans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory?

Well the first thing that I'm sure a lot of people don't know is that I had started to do a documentary about Indy Fans long before Indy 4 went into production. It was more of a "mock-umentary" than a legitimate documentary. Once Indy 4 went into production, I decided that if anyone was going to make a documentary about Indy, it had to be me. I didn't want someone to do it, who wasn't a fan, didn't know the fans, etc... I remember that once they started filming in New Haven, everyone at my production company quickly threw it together and we were on a plane to New Haven the next week. It's been non stop ever since.

Wow, one week! That was fast, I remember when you landed in New Haven, there was so much of the Marshall College set at Yale it was HUGE. How did you prepare?

I don't know if you can prepare for a documentary like this. I mean "you're meddling with powers you cannot possible comprehend," Lucasfilm and Dreamworks. Everyday it's something new. The best that I'm able to prepare, honestly, is lets say we know we want to shoot at Comic Con, we plan to be there, but that's about it. You never know who is going to show up or what's going to happen. You can't keep a strict schedule. Ultimately, this is about the fans, so they're really shaping the film. If I meet someone who says they have a huge collection, then I'm off to capture that. If this person says they have a story, then we get that. There's never been and will never be a "script," only a general outline of where we want the film to do. The FANS will determine the final product!

Who were you looking to meet?

That's a tough question. Everyone is asking, "are you going to interview Steven or Harrison?" But that's been done! To be totally honest, it's been so much fun just meeting the fans, like yourself and your sons at the New Haven filming, hearing your story about seeing the Indiana Jones films with your late father in New Haven and now passing that tradition down to your sons, hearing other fan stories, seeing their collections. It's the fans that I look forward to meeting.

We ran into this kid named Christopher at Comic Con. He's 9 years old and a huge Indy fan, but he's never seen the films on the big screen and only owns one Indy figure from Disney. The interview of him from Comic Con was so amazing, that we've made him a major part of the documentary. It's been so fun hanging out with Christopher and seeing his reactions to all this Indy stuff coming out. It reminds me of the Bruce Willis movie The Kid. It's like walking around with my younger self. But, most importantly he has reminded me about what's really important in life. Imagination and Creativity! To me, that's the most important thing we have. And that's what movies are all about, that's what this documentary is all about.

Besides the fans, who have you met that were involved in the actual Indiana Jones films to date?

Oh man, lets think. Anthony DeLongis (Bullwhip trainer on Indy 4). He's a great guy and was a lot of fun to hang out with. Deborah Nadoolman (Raiders Costume Designer), what amazing stories she has. But here's an interesting one, I met James Gammon (President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles: Kenya 1909 episode) once. I saw him in a performance of King Lear, which was amazing. I went up to him after the show and he was kind enough to sign my Young Indy script, from his episode. He looked at his wife and said "I haven't seen one of these in years." That was really neat!

I had a chance to meet the late Michael Sheard (Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders’ Sub Commander and Last Crusade’s Adolf Hitler) and he had a lot of stories from the films production. Do you have any behind the scenes stories that fans might not be aware of that you have learned during the making of Indyfans?

Well if I answered that now, nobody would want to see the film. (Laughs).

Have you sought out any original locations from the earlier films to get some behind the scenes stories?

We filmed in New Haven and got a ton of great stories there. We may dig a bit deeper and see what we can find from earlier locations, but we'll have to see. Again, it's tough to really plan to far ahead on this project. We are making some of this up as we go, to quote a certain archeologist.

Speaking of fans, what has been the reaction from them on what you are doing?

The fans are great, Obviously! Other wise, why would I want to make a documentary about them. But seriously, the fans have been great and very excited about the project. But that's probably just because wherever we go, we take the "Indy Girls!" Haha. Actually many fans came after us in New Haven to get interviewed, same happened at Comic Con. It's really been great. It seems like everyone has a story about Indiana Jones in their lives.

Has there been one common element that you hear from fans again and again on why they enjoy the Indiana Jones films so much?

Probably the most commonly heard reason is just that it appeals to everyone, to every generation. It's almost the perfect family film.

With Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in post production and due for release next May, have you been following the making of the film?

Yes and No. Obviously I've been following what’s been on TheRaiders.net, for my own knowledge, but we have to keep in mind that Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory is not about Indy 4. Luckily, we have the mania of Indy 4 to use a backdrop, but ultimately, this is about the fans! As of right now, don't expect too much about Indy 4, but it will be included...

Have you heard from the folks at Lucasfilm on this project?

No comment. (Laughs). Of course we have! Oh, I think I've said too much!

Any plans on meeting Steven Spielberg, George Lucas or Harrison Ford for their take on the Indiana Jones phenomenon?

In Steven's case, we've left messages with certain people at Dreamworks and are awaiting return calls. I have a feeling we'll never get to Lucas, he has too many "top men" around him. (Laughs). But honestly, We're making sure that anyone we interview has something new to say. I'm sure the fans are tired of hearing the same things over and over, and we certainty don't want the DVD to be boring in any way, shape, or form.

What has this experience been like for you as an Indyfan?

It's been a great experience, for a number of reasons. One, I get to go do these amazing Indy things, and write it off as "work." Can't get much better than that! And two, like I said before, it's all about the fans. They're all great and so fun to talk with. That's really what makes it all worth it. It's been a great experience, and really has been an adventure in it's own right.

When can we see the final film?

If everything goes according to plan, our goal is to have it on DVD when Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes out on DVD. Like so many documentaries of this style, they all stop right when the film opens. I know I'll probably get hate mail for this next comment, but I want to be able to interview the fans even if the Indy 4 isn't any good. I know, I'm sorry, I said it. But seriously, I want to be able to get those reactions, either good or bad. So that's why it'll be along after the films release in theaters.

However, if you're in the Los Angeles area in April, we are teaming up with the Newport Beach Film Festival to bring some sneak peaks of Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory to the big screen. Of course we'll keep the news coming to The Raider as we get closer to the date.

Brandon, if there are some fans looking to learn more about Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory where can they go?

Well, they are more than welcome to find out more information or of even better if they want to be a part of Indyfans please visit Indyfansfilm.com or myspace.com/indyfans.

Brandon, it has been a great pleasure talking with you again, I want to thank you for including me in Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory and for speaking with TheRaider.net. Good luck with the film and we look forward to seeing it in 2008!

Thank you, Mitch! I just want to say TheRaider.net has been a great source for all things Indiana Jones over the years and keep up the good work!

Costume Designer DEBORAH NADOOLMAN LANDIS Joins Indyfans!

(December , 2007, Beverly Hills, CA) When the filmmakers at Red Dot Film Studios set out to create Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory, the definitive documentary on the fandom surrounding cinema's most famous archeologist/adventurer, they began on a journey of discovery befitting their subject. While the documentary focuses on all things Indiana Jones; from fans to the cast and crew and their thoughts on the fans; it also demanded a look back into nearly three decades of film history to discover the origins of Indiana Jones. Perhaps the person, who had the most impact in establishing the definitive look of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), was none other than Academy Award Nominated Costume Designer and president of the Hollywood Costume Designers Guild, Dr. Deborah Nadoolman Landis.

Landis, on a tour promoting her new book; Dressed: a Century of Hollywood Costume Design which showcases one hundred years of Hollywood's most tantalizing costumes and the characters they helped bring to life, sat down with the makers of Indyfans to share her recollections on creating the costume for Indiana Jones.

When creating the rugged look of Indiana Jones, easily one of Hollywood's most recognizable screen heroes, Landis tells Indyfans about the color palate chosen for Indy, creating the right hat, and dives deep into her own personal "archives" and talks about many of the supporting characters, including Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), Belloq (Paul Freeman), and even the Hovito Indians.

In his interview with Deborah Nadoolman Landis, Indyfans producer and director, Brandon Kleyla, asks her what it is like knowing that so many people replicate her Indiana Jones costume, and strive to get it as accurate to her original design as possible.

"It's unbelievable. It's unbelievable to see someone in one of my costumes. I'm humbled by seeing fans dressed in my costume. Because unlike the fans who only experience the movie, I was kind of the mother, I'm the mother of the costume. To see it replicated by fans in such a loving way is very, very satisfying." said Nadoolman Landis

"Having the caliber of a renowned film talent like, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, who has not only contributed to Raiders of the Lost Ark, but other classic films like Animal House (1978), 1941 (1979), The Blues Brothers (1980), Three Amigos (1986) and Coming to America (1988), having her as a part of Indyfans is truly an honor" said Kleyla. "I know I speak for Indy fans around the world in saying our hats, particularly our fedoras, are off to her for designing one of the coolest looking heroes in history!"

Deborah Nadoolman Landis' account adds to impressive list of interviews in the film Indyfans on the impact of what the character of Indiana Jones has had on fans. The Indyfans documentary is due for release in Fall of 2008, around the DVD release of the much anticipated fourth installment in action series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, starring Harrison Ford, with executive producer George Lucas, and director Steven Spielberg.

About Red Dot Film Studios:

Based in Camarillo, California, Red Dot Film Studios (www.reddotfilmstudios.com) is the force behind the film Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory, the first documentary to showcase the legions of fans devoted to Indiana Jones. Indyfans is the brainchild of Brandon Kleyla, who set out to uncover the secret of the long-lasting appeal of the globe-trotting archeologist. In keeping with the tradition of the Indiana Jones adventures, our hero soon discovers more than he bargained for. In his case, Kleyla finds a touching revelation and why these films are more than just a great "thrill ride", but have a lasting legacy that spans generations.
