UC Homeland Security: Does Janet Napolitano Dream of Electric Trees?

Janet Napolitano's presidency over the University of California raises concerns. Napolitano has no background in education, and comes to the UC directly from leading the Department of Homeland Security, a department known for bloated budgets, inefficiency, and lack of oversight. Janet Napolitano helped organized the arrest of over 7,000 Americans during the Occupy protests. In Berkeley, protesters suffered broken arms and ribs during the police and DHS attacks on Occupy; citizen reporters were threatened to be shot at point black range. In Oakland, location of UC offices, tear gas and rubber bullets caused numerous injuries to the public. Bay residents suffering from a collective trauma, and a person who helped caused it now runs the UC.

Even though there is overwhelming support for the redwood trees (at Ridge Road and Le Roy Avenue), UC Berkeley is still planning to cut down the grove for the Paul Jacobs Design Institute. Students, faculty/staff and Berkeley residents want the trees to stay, but the UC is ignoring the community.

The ground breaking ceremony for the design center is April 12th, Cal Day. It is believed the trees may be cut down beforehand, over Spring break, to clear the lot for the public ceremony.

For the history books, here's the full 5-hour video of the Oakland City Council discussion on Phase II development of the Domain Awareness Center from March 4, 2014. One hundred and forty-nine public speaker's cards were turned in prior to the meeting. Public comment was unanimous against a city-wide DAC. Council members, after having revealed on February 18 an interest in reigning in the expansive surveillance system that city staffers have pushed, followed through by passing a resolution at about 1am on March 5 to proceed with a scaled-down Port-only version of the DAC. The final vote was 4 Ayes - Brooks, Kalb, Reid, Kernighan - and 4 Noes - Gallo, Gibson McElhaney, Kaplan, Schaaf. Mayor Quan's Aye vote broke the tie. (Text of the passed Port-only DAC resolution is below.)

The redwood trees behind Soda Hall, on Ridge Road and Le Roy Avenue are going to be replaced with the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, a privately funded tech design lab paid for by the CEO and Chairperson of the Board of Qualcomm Paul Jacobs.
For the history books, here's the full 4-hour video of the Oakland City Council discussion on the Domain Awareness Center from Feb 18, 2014. In the end, the Council did not vote on the City Resolution before them, which was to approve Schneider Electric as the contractor to build out Phase 2 of the DAC, or to give City Administrator Deanna Santana the authority to select a contractor on her own. Instead, after listening to seventy-six speaker's cards worth of public comment -- intelligent, passionate, and unanimous against the DAC -- the Council did an about face from previous related votes in support of the DAC. A majority of council members indicated an interest in reigning in the expansive, privacy-invading surveillance system that city staffers have pushed, seeming to want to limit the scope of the DAC to covering the Port of Oakland only. The next City Council vote on the Domain Awareness Center is scheduled for March 4, 2014.

MUST SEE!!! BART Police repeatedly tase nonviolent African American man for no reason. We CAN NOT TOLERATE BART COPS ACTING LIKE THIS. This is the force that killed Oscar Grant! Note that passengers repeatedly try to tell the cop the man didn't do anything. At no point did the victim make any violent move to any officer. Tasers can be lethal. There needs to be an immediate investigation and prosecution of this racist brutality.

Eyal Sivan has documented some of this indoctrination in his 1990 film <strong>IZKOR, SLAVES OF MEMORY</strong> - http://www.eyalsivan.info/index.php?p=movingimg&amp;id=6

<ul>"IZKOR, is a portrait of the Israeli society that has never been shown before, thirty days in the life of a State that lives to the rhythm of its memory. This award-winning film puts forward a passionate and severe analysis of the Hebrew state.

“IZKOR,” means "remember" in Hebrew and this film looks in depth at this imperative that is imposed on the children of Israel. In Israel during the month of April feast days and celebrations take place one after another. School children of all ages prepare to pay tribute to their country's past. The collective memory becomes a terribly efficient tool for the training of young minds."</ul>

The line is drawn from kindergarten to the moment in which every Israeli (except for the Orthodox and Arab-Israelis) fulfills their 'destiny', to do their military service.

The "Breaking the Silence" group (now approximately 800 ex-soldiers) speak about this eloquently, and heartbreakingly - because they were once children and believed what they were told. Equally heartbreaking is the Christian, or any other religion, indoctrination of children. Some of them have grown up to serve in the US military and play out their contempt for Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq.

10 people made homeless by an eviction in Dalston, Hackney. Reporter and resident Richard Hering asks why. The house was rescued from dereliction by squatters for the last 3 years, who were popular neighbours. Mayor Jules Pipe said that anyone who opposed his gentrification plans was part of the &quot;Keep Hackney Crap&quot; brigade.
