It may seem like a silly question, but if you have never had bed bugs – How DO you know if you have bed bugs for sure?

If you’ve never been a victim of bed bugs and their annoyingly itchy bites, consider yourself lucky…

Lucky because out of all the pest problems to have in the world, having an infestation of bed bugs has to be the worst of them all. But, how do you know if you have bed bugs munching away at your skin at night? In this short article, I’ll not only teach you how to easily figure this out, but I’ll give you some inexpensive solutions for this pest problem.

Bed bugs are members of the genus Cimex, and this species of insect loves to feed on human blood. They crawl out of their protective hiding spaces at night between the hours of 2 am and 6 am.

When they bite you, most likely you will not feel anything. This is because when they bite, they secrete a form of anesthesia into the bite area so they can successfully drink your blood without your knowledge. Bed bug bites rarely show up after the first day. It’s on the second day that you will start to notice little red bumps that are close together appearing on your skin. These bumps are following by an intense itching that I could only describe as a “frantic itch”. Imagine how a mosquito bite feels and multiply that by five. This is how most people describe bed bug bites.

Checking for bed bugs can be a very daunting task.

Why? Because they love to hid in the cracks and crevices under and around your sleeping area. Check under the bed, along the sides of your mattress, and in the bed frames for the possible nesting sites. You’ll know you’ve found bed bugs when you see little clear and brownish red insects either walking around or huddled up in a bunch in their nest.

What should you do if you find bed bugs?

First, wash all clothing in the infested room with hot water. Then proceed to dry the clothes for at least 30 minutes on high heat. This will kill the bed bugs that are alive and will also kill the eggs they lay. Take your bed apart, use a steamer or an iron on your mattress and go over every inch of it twice. I’m not exaggerating here, you need to make sure you iron every inch of your mattress to ensure you have killed the bed bugs and their eggs. Finally, take your bed frame, and spray rubbing alcohol on every inch because rubbing alcohol is a contact killer for bed bugs.

There are other signs of bed bugs that you need to be aware of as well. Sometimes you’ll see little black specks along the sides of your mattress. This is the feces from the bed bugs that is left after they feed. When in doubt, call an exterminator that uses heat to treat the bed bug problem and make sure they offer a warranty on their services because, unfortunately, you will rarely be able to kill all of them the first time.

It is no secret that bed bug bites are frustrating. What can be secret about these bites, though, are some of the symptoms that people do not tell you about. Most people find that bed bug bites do not show up for about a week after they take place and almost anything can happen as a result.

If you are experiencing a reaction to a bed bug bite, you should strongly consider hiring a professional to exterminate your bed bugs. Those who choose to treat bed bugs by themselves at home should make sure they are treating with a product that is guaranteed to work and take care of the problem.

In fact they are one of the toughest pests to deal with

Anyone claiming to be able to instantly kill bed bugs are probably lying to you!

You see, the main problem with bed bugs is they are nocturnal – night creatures. They come out at night and feed on you then head back to where they came from, if the infestation is severe you’ll find the bulk of them festering in your actual mattress. If not then you have a few elusive bed bugs causing the problem.

Either way there simply isn’t a quick fix to kill, get rid of and prevent them instantly..

There are solutions on the market claiming to do all this and I would beware of them. Here is something I found on the Huffington Post about a few of these bed bug remedy claims. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/11/bed-bug-remedies-deceptive-marketing_n_1873405.htm)

There is a solution however that works great at preventing bed bugs from entering your home and bed. If you have a bed bugs problem, it’s great at keeping them at bay and away from your bed.

They don’t claim to kill bed bugs instantly, just prevent them..

As far as I’m concerned that’s good enough for me to have a good nights sleep and not worry about bed bugs feeding on me and biting me all night long.

You will have to wash all your clothing at the recommended 120 degrees Fahrenheit to kill them and make sure your clothing is bed bugs free. This gives you time store them in a safe room, giving you the chance to make sure all your clothing are free of bugs.

The product is called Bed Defense, and that’s exactly what it does, it defends your bed from bed bugs. It’s also great to use when you travel, if you stay in hotels a lot this is a godsend, keep one in your bag and your guaranteed no stow a ways on that trip.

If you have a bed bugs problem then Bed Defense should definitely be your first port of call while you work out the logistics and action plan to make sure you deal with them correctly – as you know there are some very expensive solutions available and you have to make sure you make the right choice, and worrying about a good nights sleep wont do you any good in helping you make the right decision. Bed defense will let you sleep better knowing the bugs are at bay.

There is also the possibility Bed Defense will deal with the the bed bug problem entirely and over time (say about 6-8 weeks) your house will be bed bugs free, providing its not an infestation from hell, then you’ll probably need a bit more time (the cost of each unit is under $10 and right now for a limited time shipping is free so you can even get one for every room in your home, before you go out and spend hundreds, or even thousands!)

How To Minimise The Impact Of A Bed Bug Infestation On Your Family & Effectively Kill Bed Bugs

Yes, it is true. Bed Bugs, who have inhabited the earth, feasting on human blood, since prehistoric times, are back in force. After being spayed, trapped, and poisoned into virtual extinction, this pest has benefited from the ban on many commonly used pesticides to make a remarkable recovery.

Most people will be shocked to learn that 93% of all American homes are at risk during 2012. Frankly, with the economy in the doldrums, the last thing any home owner, or apartment dweller, wants to face is becoming the victim of these horrible little insects.

The financial impact can also be enormous.

Most pest control companies know How to Eliminate Bed Bug and charge upwards of $500 per room. Removing them also requires months of follow up visits from a professional service to prevent bed bugs from returning all over again.

The emotional cost on a family can be incalculable.

A parent can only cringe in horror, thinking about how waking covered with insect bites might affect their young children. Nothing could be more disturbing than seeing your child, covered with itchy bed bug bites, afraid to return to their bed and probably also end up Getting Rid of a Mattress. Imagine the impact of hearing your child crying after being bitten over and over by the tiny insect vampires.

Not only children will be affected by bed bugs.

No one, of any age, likes to think about lying in their bed, deep in sleep, while these pests feast on their blood. Their unwelcome presence alone can lead to many nights of tossing and turning, desperately trying to fall asleep, while anticipating the first bite in the dark.

While bites from these pests have not been linked to any major diseases, they can become a medical problem. They are often quite itchy, and they may lead to a rash, blisters, or an infection, if scratched. Itchy bites must be treated with an anti-itch lotion like Calamine, or a cortisone based anti-itch cream. Bites, especially on children, should be monitored. If they don’t begin to disappear in a few days, or if they get worse, a visit to a doctor is advised.

On top of all the stress, and horror associated with an infestation, you may have to spend several weeks in a motel, while the professionals treat your home. You may also have to dispose of severely infested furniture, mattresses, clothing, and personal property. Depending on the laws where you live, you might even have to hire a special company that handles contaminated waste, which will run up another large bill.

You certainly should not sit back and wait for the worst to happen; then give up and call an expensive professional to deal with your pest infestation. Long before that happens, there are many steps you can take to protect your home from them.

Your first to get rid of these bed bugs is to arm yourself with knowledge.

There are hundreds of websites on the Internet that will help you learn how to get rid of bed bugs; their appearance, their habits, their hiding places, how to handle an infestation, and how to keep them out of your house.

Once you have studied up this bug, it is time to do a complete inspection of your residence, and a complete inspection of family members for bites. You should take a flashlight and look under mattresses, under sofa cushions, under upholstered furniture, in drawers, in cabinets, and in closets, for signs of bed bugs. Look especially under every mattress for actual bed bugs, their molt shells, or their droppings. Inspect sheets for blood smears from bug bites. Look closely around places where humans, or family pets, sleep or sit, since bed bugs are not fond of bright light, and they prefer to remain as close as possible to their source of food.

When you examine family members for bites, look on areas of the skin that were exposed while they were sleeping. Bed bugs are always aware of the need to get away, and they do not like to crawl under people’s clothing to feed. Inspect closely for rows of three bites, which indicate the infamous “breakfast, lunch, and dinner” feeding pattern they use when they drink their victims blood.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3-U8NTcFcM

If you discover bed bugs have already infested your home, you will have to make a very difficult decision. You will have to give a great deal of thought to either hiring an expensive professional to treat them, or learn how to get rid of bed bugs by yourself. No matter what you decide, you must move quickly, and efficiently, to minimize the damage caused, and the expense of getting rid of your unwelcome pests.

On the other hand, if you are fortunate, and you do not have any bugs or pests, it is the perfect time to take steps to protect your family. There is a great product on the market called Bed Defense, that will help you get rid of bed bugs. The product is incedibly easy to use. All you do is open the box, and place the traps wherever you need them.

A sufficient quantity of these traps to protect you will cost less than a summertime family weekend at the beach. Order enough of the child safe, pet safe, all natural traps to place them in every room. Put one trap under every mattress to protect each of your beds. Be sure to place one under furniture, in closets, in drawers, in cabinets, and don’t forget to protect the bedding of any family pets. Create a impenetrable barrier against bed bugs.

The time to start protecting your family is now. Become an expert, and take a pro-active approach to preventing bed bugs from becoming uninvited occupants. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until it is too late and they are feeding on you and your loved ones get rid of them now. And always remember, BED DEFENSE For how to get rid of bed bugs.

Insect repellent is not an effective treatment for killing a bed bug infestation in your home, sometimes you may need a professional to help kill them.

They can get infested in your furniture and end up hiding in beds, cracks, crevices, cushions and more. While trying insect repellent on them designed for use on the human body may slow them down or even disable them if sprayed directly on the living insect, use of insect repellent is not a good method for deterring the pests on a person and rarely kills them. Tests have shown that when a person sprays herself in an attempt to become less desirable to them the spray does not serve as a deterrent at all. Bed bugs are unaffected by the residue of insect repellent on human skin (and this is when sometimes you may need to call a professional to your home). It simply does not work. Bedbugs are very determined to find a smooth patch of skin to obtain a source of human blood and they are not going to let a light veneer of bug spray get in the way of their next meal. The nearly incomprehensible tenacity of these bugs frustrates home owners, motel owners and especially hotel and apartment owners whose pest control bills to kill off a stubborn populations of bedbugs can exceed $20,000 per home or residence.

Insect repellent is normally formulated to deter and kill mosquitoes and ticks, outdoor insects that can easily escape and have limitless sources on which to feed. Bedbugs are home creatures with a very limited source of food. Observations of active populations of bed bugs have shown that the greatest activity is between three and five o’clock in the morning, earlier than most people awaken. It is also several hours after insect repellent would have been applied, so the effectiveness of an application would be considerably diminished, especially since it may have been absorbed by bedding rather than forming a protective layer on facial and neck skin. Bed bugs have the perfect opportunity to feed on people who are unprotected while fast asleep.

What To Do Instead

Instead of using insect repellent, the best way to avoid bed bugs is to be very proactive about checking for them in hotels and motels, as well as sleeping quarters in private homes. Pull aside bedding and lift your mattress to visually inspect areas these bugs typically inhabit. Because this bug has a preference for exposed facial skin, it’s not unusual to find nests of bedbugs, eggs and nymphs at the head of a mattress, and on either side towards the top. Box springs should also be checked thoroughly. Bedbugs tend to colonize close to their source of food, so that’s why this bug infestation will most often become apparent on or very near a bed, although carpeting around and beneath the bed and headboards and nightstand’s are equally susceptible to infestation. Spraying bedding, carpeting, mattresses, box springs and nightstands with insect repellent is completely ineffective, and even tried-and-true insect deterrents such as boric acid regularly fail, there is steam which can work quite well and cleaning with a vacuum is always better than using chemicals that may drive you out of your home. These bedbugs can hide just about anywhere so make sure if you use a professional service to kill them you should get rid of all the dust in your home and give a thorough clean beforehand they hopefully come in and get rid of your bed bugs!
