Optimize Windows Vista for better performance

No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they are new, they all seem to get slower over time. That state-of-the-art PC you bought last year might not feel like such a screamer after you install a dozen programs, load it with antispyware and antivirus tools, and download untold amounts of junk from the Internet. The slowdown might happen so gradually you hardly notice it, until one day you’re trying to open a program or file and wonder, "What happened to my poor PC?"

Whatever the cause, there are a lot of ways to help speed up Windows and make your PC work better—even without upgrading your hardware. Here are some tips to help you optimize Windows Vista for faster performance.
Delete programs you never use

Many PC manufacturers pack their new computers with programs you didn’t order and might not want. These often include trial editions and limited edition versions of programs that software companies hope you will try, find useful, and then pay to upgrade to full versions or newer versions. If you decide you don’t want them, keeping the software on your computer might slow it down by using precious memory, disk space, and processing power.

It’s a good idea to uninstall all the programs you don’t plan to use. This should include both manufacturer-installed software and software you installed yourself but don’t want anymore—especially utility programs designed to help manage and tune your computer’s hardware and software. Utility programs such as virus scanners, disk cleaners, and backup tools often run automatically at startup, quietly chugging along in the background where you can’t see them. Many people have no idea they are even running.

Even if your PC is older, it might contain manufacturer-installed programs that you never noticed or have since forgotten about. It’s never too late to remove these and get rid of the clutter and wasted system resources. Maybe you thought you might use the software someday, but never did. Uninstall it and see if your PC runs faster.

Limit how many programs load at startup

Many programs are designed to load automatically when Windows starts. Software manufacturers often set their programs to open in the background, where you can’t see them running, so they’ll open right away when you click their icons. That's helpful for programs you use a lot, but for programs you rarely or never use, this wastes precious memory and slows down the time it takes Windows to finish loading.

Decide for yourself if you want a program to load at startup.

But how can you tell what programs load automatically at startup? Sometimes this is obvious, because the program will add an icon to the notification area on the taskbar, where you can see it running. Look there and see if there are any programs running that you don’t want to load automatically. Position your mouse over each icon to see the program name. Be sure to click the Show hidden icons button so you don’t miss any icons.

Even after you check the notification area, you might still have missed some programs that load automatically at startup. You can find and disable them using Windows Defender.

If you’re unsure about whether a program should open automatically at startup, you can try disabling it, restarting your computer, and then using the program. If that causes any problems with the program, you can go back and re-enable it to start automatically.

The release of Flash Player 10 includes new functionality to play dynamically generated sound. Mike Davidson wrote a really great article about how to use PHP to make a mobile site processor. I want to give that a try on my blog and see how it goes (it is however going towards the end on a fairly long to-do list). This approach has you set up a subdomain like mobile. for your site that hits a PHP page to process each HTML page and reformat the page to some more mobile friendly content.

I think this is going to fit in well with my current plans on how to make my site mobile friendly. My original thought was to make a Flash Lite file that has a fully stylized view of my site and the just screw the non-Flash Lite users. >:) Heck, I’m writing to a niche audience, and not respecting of the current WAP experience enough to care (if you want to read my blog that badly you should have your head examined).

Now, I think I am going to make a landing page that lets you opt for the Flash Lite file or to go on though the processed page. I know a few of you Flash Lite folks are thinking “but I don’t have a phone that supports Flash Lite in the browser.” However If you access a SWF in your browser it will be downloaded and launch the local player (muahaha).

To the user, the experience of changing from the WAP browser to the Flash Lite Player is very smooth. The first time I tried it, I thought somehow I was still in the browser. I thought this because I run my Flash File fullscreen and there was no chrome to give away the change. When I was done with the application, I quit and was immediately back in the browser.

Adobe announced today that Flash Player 10 and AIR reached record penetration numbers, with more than 100 million installations of AIR and a 55% penetration of Flash Player 10 in December 2008.

"Adobe Flash Player 10 was installed on more than 55 percent of computers worldwide in just the first two months of its release, and is expected to surpass 80 percent by the second quarter of 2009, far outpacing the installation rate of past versions of the software."

I’ve recently spotted a few new articles focusing on Flash animation production companies. The first is in the Austin-American Statesman, titled ‘Austin a center of digital animation,’ and it highlights a couple Flash-friendly studios, Powerhouse Animation and Horseback Salad Entertainment. "Always On My Mind" is a song originally recorded by Brenda Lee and released on June 12th, 1972, with music and lyrics by Johnny Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson Thompson.

Elvis Presley first made "Always on My Mind" famous, reaching number 16 on Billboard magazine's Hot Country Singles chart in early 1973. Brenda Lee's version had stalled at #45 on the country charts in 1972.

The song was also recorded by Willie Nelson. Released in the spring of 1982, the song raced to number one on Billboard magazine's Hot Country Singles chart that May, spending two weeks atop the chart. The song also did very well on Top 40 radio, peaking at number five on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

In 1987, the Pet Shop Boys performed a version on an ITV network television special commemorating the tenth anniversary of Presley's death, in which various popular contemporary acts performed cover versions of his hits. Their performance of "Always on My Mind" was so well-received that the group decided to record and release a version as a single. This version became the U.K.'s Christmas number one single that year, beating "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues, topping the charts for four weeks in total. It also reached number one in Germany in 1988, and made the top ten in the United States the same year. In November 2004, The Daily Telegraph newspaper placed the version at number two in a list of the fifty greatest cover versions of all time.

Leiber and Stoller excelled at writing catchy Pop songs with elements of Blues music. Their songs could be very funny and clever, and often take place in unusual situations. Some of their other hits include "Love Potion #9" and "On Broadway." Mike Stoller played piano on this track.

This was featured in the Elvis movie of the same name, where Elvis plays a wrongly-accused convict who becomes a star when he gets out. The film, which is considered one of the best of his 31 movies, is famous for the scene where Elvis performs this song in an elaborate dance number taking place in prison.

The line, "Number 47 said to number 3, You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see," is a sly reference to prison sex but was not offensive enough to create any controversy over the song.

Sha-Na-Na played this at Woodstock in 1969. Very few of the attendees saw their performance, as they didn't go on until Monday morning (the event was scheduled to end at midnight on Sunday, but ran long). Jimi Hendrix followed Sha-Na-Na to close out the festival.

It's 8:00 here in L.A. It's hot, and the news is only hours old. It's like the Kennedy assassination, just. I remember the exact moment I heard. I reacted numbly, like "oh, really?" and sat down. It took a while for the pain to set in. I called a friend to find out what he knew, but stopped. It had happened: that was all there was to know.

It had just been a couple of months earlier that I'd gotten re-energized about Elves. As a kid I couldn't have been more slavish, with records, pictures, posters, pennants. Anything that mentioned him I'd buy. I read all the fan magazines, followed his every move. Connected people like Nick Adams grew in importance. Natalie Wood should have married him. His impact on my young life was total.

But I backslid when he did. The crushing disappointment when he got out of the Army. The tepid Sinatra tv special. those slushy Italian ballads. Those movies. Elvis, the image, crumbled like everything else in the 60s. The '68 comeback offered some hope; him on tv, kidding around with a guitar on his knee, the symbolic leather jacket that not he, or me, or anyone ever wore in the 50s. The 1970 tour (how I looked blankly at the little ad in the Denver Post, trying to reckon with my senses like today). the Vegas days, the karate chops and the fringed suits. Then the slowdown and the poses where there used to be movies. And now this.

Ironically, 1976 was a big year for Elvis "revivals" because of several important re-issued records, official and otherwise. RCA put out The Sun Sessions, important early stuff, and The Legendary Performer that contained a lavish booklet with session sheets, news clippings, magazine covers, and other fetishists' delights culled from what must be an incomprehensible ( to the impressionable) feast of Presleyana somewhere in the RCA vaults. The bootlegs told the real story, though, with early session outtakes, precious movie soundtracks, and most importantly, the original rv soundtracks to the Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey shows in January, 1956, the ones they refer to on the first album's liner notes. The power of the Man! The first show: he's shy, quietly introducing himself and suddenly going wild. No screams, just bewilderment from the mid-1950s eisenhower years audience. At the end of "Blue Suede Shoes", a blast from the band and applause. But by the second song the tale is told. The drama of those shows was so inescapable. The Dorsey Brothers, don't you ? Fading symbols of a passing order, their pale, polite variety show suddenly confronted by youthful animal energy as significant as the atomic bomb that so permeated those years. And in the middle of "Heartbreak Hotel" the horn player, doing what should have been Scotty's guitar break, breaks loose and blows his brains out in futility trying to match the fervor of the kid with the loose hips and electric eyes. Hearing this is goosebump stuff, a glimpse of raw power like -- who? Hitler? Exactly who could summon up such emotion with the flick of a wrist? In the late 60s I remember respecting Abbie Hoffman and Frank Zappa and Eldridge Cleaver because they cited Elvis as an influence. It was obvious, but in those days it needed pointing out. Elvis made it all possible. Elvis represented anarchy.
