To paraphrase myself: Internet marketing is NOT for the faint of heart. There is a lot of hype out there from people trying to sell you their magic program that claims you can make a 6 figure income at home in your pajamas, working 2 hours a day. Here are three things that you can do now that will cost you time, not money:

1. How to find places on the web that will give you a free website to use. There are a lot of these. Squidoo and Wordpress come quickly to mind. Do a Google search for free web sites and stand back so you don't get bowled over!

2. Find out how to write dozens of articles, even if English is not your first language and you don't have any experience writing articles. There are many programs available that will write iterations of your article. That is to say that you write one article and the software changes a few synonyms here and there and adds and subtracts phrases. For example, you may write, "The quick brown fox jumped over the fence." The program will change the phrase to: "The fast brown mammal cleared the embankment." You get the point. Personally I would avoid these because, how much sense did that last sentence make? I include this because it is available. Use it at your own risk. Your articles may be reviewed by a live editor that will kick them out or worse yet, blacklist you.

3. Find out how you can sell some one else's books, be their affiliate, and get paid for doing it! Go to clickbank.com and find a product that you like. You will have to do some research here. A good product will have everything you need to market the product. Squeeze page text, articles, banners, etc. All you have to do is market the product.

How? Again you can put it up on a Squidoo lens, create back links and sell the product!

When deciding how to make money online, the first stop on the journey is, obviously, an Internet search. I was no exception to this and I will tell you here what has happened so far.

My experience was initially, a huge list of Internet Marketing Gurus, trying to sell you the latest thing in the internet world that will make you a Millionaire overnight, with no experience and no money. They all claimed to have unearthed a mind blowing plan that mean't no one could fail. not even me.

Now, being a reasonably intelligent guy. I was a bit suspicious, It surely could not be that simple, otherwise every man and his dog would be at it and we would all be Millionaires, making a million Dollars or GBP practically worthless.

Dont' get me wrong, people are making money and in many cases "Big Money", but you do need some knowledge and perhaps, not so importantly, a little money also.

The first thing I learn't was that much of the money online was being made by Affiliates. Basically these are people who market other peoples products in return for a commission on sales made. Now if you sign up with Clickbank you will see hundreds of possible products to market. But beware!! the figures may look good but are they going to sell?. Your Google Adwords account can soon run up a large bill with little or no response.

Here are the 4 basics that will be discussed:

1) What do you want to do? What is your end goal and the method you will be using?
2) How will you drive traffic to your site?
3) Are you building pages with the right words? Are the right ads on your pages? Do you have a "call to action" to get your visitors to take action?
4) Always discover what works and focus our efforts on those things. Always keep stats and analyze what works better and what wont. Repeat the same with what works. Disregard what does not work.

So, here we go.

First: You must decide whether you will be creating and selling your own products or promoting those of others (affiliate programs). You may want to sell advertising which could include selling text links or putting Google AdSense on your web pages.

Otherwise, how and where will money be generated?

Second: You need to decide how to drive traffic (viewers/prospects) to your site?

You can either purchase traffic or earn it your self. Both ways will need research and effort to attain your maximum exposure for results.

Purchasing advertising like Google Adwords or getting free traffic through the search engines with SEO or articles or a combination of both are great ways to get viewers to your site.

Third: Having the right keywords on your pages is a must. Also, are the right ads on your pages that are relative to your content? The call to action or getting your visitors/prospects react to your content and offers is the most important aspect. Are you motivating them? Are you appealing to what they want? You have to help them and they will help you.

It wont matter how many visitors read your pages. You MUST have a compelling OFFER so that they WILL take ACTION. No action. No money.

Fourth:You must find out what works and what wont and then focus your efforts on those things that are working.

Study stats and analyze why some things work better than others.

Experimenting and finding the best way to be profitable is KEY. Always take note of the things that are working and possibly discovering new ways to attract prospects to take the action.

Are you using the right keyword? Which of the keyword are affective? How about the advertising? Is it placed properly? Are they the right ads?

CONVERSION is the GOAL.

However, the lure of making money this way attracts more and more people everyday. And it is a fact that many people even live very well from the revenue brought in through affiliate programs.

So how exactly can you make money with affiliate programs?

There are 3 ways, actually payment options to affiliates:

* Pay per impression (CPM)
* Pay per click (PPC)
* Pay per sale/lead

Each of these bring in revenue, and are generally thought to be an either/or choice, as in, you can only choose one of the payment options.

Pay per impression (CPM)

CPM can be a very profitable avenue for a site that has a lot of traffic. CPM refers to cost per thousand actually. How did the change from pay per impression happen to cost per thousand? Simply because the affiliate under this scheme is paid for every 'impression' of a banner on his site. Payment is made by thousands (M being the Latin numeral of thousand), CPM translates thus to cost per thousand.

This scheme is very simple and basic. An affiliate simply has to 'show' a banner on his site, and gets paid for every thousand banners viewed. While it can appear as a simple way of earning money, CPM is not exactly 'the' get-rich-quick avenue of affiliates. Since you are paid by banners viewed, it is logical then to imagine that the more views, the more money earned. How to get more views though? That's the key question.

Pay per click (PPC)

In this scheme, you get paid for every click to the banner you are displaying. PPC definitely pays more than CPM, as it is a more hazardous gamble on whether or not someone will actually click the banner after seeing it.

A site with high traffic and a site that also encourages clicking will fare much better in this type of scheme. Providing related content and pre-selling the affiliate's products on the site can lead to more clicks. Carefully targeting your audience is also a good way of getting the best out of your affiliate links.

Pay per sale/lead

This is the most popular way to earn money as an affiliate and the way that I have made most of my money as well. In this situation, the affiliate earns a share or a commission on the sale of every product he directs a client to.

This form of pay for performance is also the one that pays best. What happens is you get visitors to your site or blog, once there you presell your affiliate product or service in which when they click on the link that you provide them, they are then taken to the affiliate products website. If they buy the product, you earn the commission.

The art of Pre-Selling a product is a great way to sell an affiliate product. Unbiased product reviews are another very popular way to sell products.

Overall, it can be said that it is easy to earn money by being an affiliate... however, there is an art to it. With that said, anyone can do it. I have worked with lots of different affiliate programs and to be honest, when I first got started in the affiliate marketing business I didn't know anything.

Here is a question I want you to answer right now. Ready, who are the specific group of people your business serves and what main solution does your business offer them?

How did you do? Was your response immediate and clear? If you're struggling to answer these two questions don't panic. I'm going to give you the information you need to get started but first, why should you even bother having a niche.

Here's why you need a niche. You will attract clients faster with less effort. You will position yourself as an expert. You will make it easier for other people to give you referrals. You will feel extremely confident. Now who doesn't want all of that?

There are two parts of your business you can niche. One is 'your people' the other is 'their problem/your solution.' Niching both parts is the most effective but niching one is better than none.

And the more specific your niche is, the more your business will be seen as the one and only solution for your clients.

First we'll look at your people, then your solution, and finally how to put it all together. You don't have to start with your people. You can start with defining your solution or you can work on both at the same time.

So, who are your people? They can be any combination of the attributes below (this is not an exhaustive list, just to get you started). Grab a piece of paper and write down all of the descriptions that apply to your people.

YOUR PEOPLE

- Gender: Male, Female, or Both

- Age Group: Teenagers, Recent University Graduates, People in their 30's, Mid-Lifers, Retirees

- Life Situation: Divorced, Married, Single, Retired, Recently Relocated, Dealing with Illness

- Location: City, State, Country Specific, Worldwide

- Affiliation: MBA graduate, Member of Professional Organization or Association, Church Member, Speaker of a Particular Language, Specific Nationality

- Interests/Hobbies: Travel, Animals, Running, Cooking, Drawing, Writing, Photography

- Educational Background: Undergraduate University Degree, Masters Degree, PhD

- Industry: Banking, Medical, IT, Oil & Gas, Professional Services, Consulting

- Position: CEO, Project Manager, HR Professional, Small Business Owner, Accountant

Here are a couple of examples:

* Female small business owners who work from home and have kids

* Retiring male bank executives who live in New York and love to travel

It is important that the niche of people you choose fit three critical criteria.

1. There are enough of them to sustain your business

2. You can easily locate and reach them

3. They are willing, and able, to invest in your products and services

OK, now you know who your people are. So what does your business do for them?

THEIR PROBLEM, YOUR SOLUTION

Most problems are directly tied to some general wants/needs: to save money, make more money, save time, reduce stress, feel more healthy, attractive, and happy. Here are some possible problems that your people may have.

> Need more clients (want to make more money)

> No time or energy to exercise (want to feel better)

> Managing a team that is not getting along (want to save money & reduce stress)

> Not enough time to get everything done (want to make money & reduce stress)

> Stuck in a style rut and need a new look (want to feel more attractive)

> Can't find the right romantic relationship (want to be happier)

> Don't know where to invest their money (want to make more money)

Now put the two parts together, your people and the problem they have that your business solves. Here are two examples:

Setting successful strategies for a successful online business is just one part of the whole online business and Internet marketing asset. Recession and struggle for winning new customers is just one of many facts, and excuses any of us might find.

The truth is that, Yes, we are facing recession in many countries worldwide. Yes, competition is growing and you have to struggle more for new customers. Also, keeping customers is very often even more difficult than "simply" gaining new ones ... a good marketing may help you find new customers; only long term relations and excellence of delivery in combination with authenticity guarantee long term success.

Having the right tools and systems in place is as important as applying them. You might have the best kitchen aids available on the market, if you do not use them, learn how to best use them, you will never serve that advertised dinner that had inspired you for the purchase. You will figure it out observing, monitoring, checking and adjusting your business case.

So, at the end, it comes all down to your mindset! Are you set for success? Are you willing to invest all available resources into your success? Do you understand there is a learning point and a learning curve that will grow steadily if, and only if you invest in it?!

Are you organized for success; willing to learn, apply, test and adapt? These are just some of the questions you should ask yourself before giving up or starting to blame systems, products, forums or persons involved.

Marketing your online business towards success is not a game, it is not easy and will not happen over night.
