Honda Freed 2010

Honda Malaysia has launched the Freed “premium compact MPV”. The Freed’s price of RM112,980 (OTR with insurance) backs up the positioning – it’s costlier than the Nissan Grand Livina 1.8 and the much larger Toyota Innova, for instance. The Freed sits on the Jazz/City platform, although its 2,740 mm wheelbase is quite a bit longer than the City’s 2,550 mm. The wheelbase is actually 140 mm longer than the Grand Livina’s although the Nissan is longer overall. The drivetrain is similar to the what we’re familiar with in the City – a 1.5-litre single-cam i-VTEC paired to five-speed automatic. For this application, the gear ratios are shorter and the 116 bhp/146 Nm engine makes 2 bhp less and 1 Nm more than the City. The steering is EPS, suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front and torsion beam at the rear, while the brakes are front discs and rear drums.

Within a footprint of 6.72 sq metres (almost identical to the Toyota Avanza), the Freed accommodates up to 7 persons in a 2-2-3 seating arrangement. The middle row has separate seats which, in Indonesia, are called 'King and Queen’ seats. They are separated because the interior designers wanted to provide a 'walk-through’ approach to the third row. The idea may work for a larger MPV and it’s nice for children but might be a bit cramped for some adults who also have to lower their heads even though the ceiling is high (thanks to the low floor which is 410 mm above the road). The only way to get to the third row is between the two middle seats as the access from the door sides is not convenient because the seats do not slide or tilt forward. It could have something to do with the sliding door not opening wide enough.

The third row has 50:50 split seats which can be separately folded up against the sides when not needed. It’s a good idea and the seats are tightly secured by straps so they do not make noise when driving over bumpy roads. There’s no additional blower or vent to carry cool air all the way to the back but the air-conditioning system is said to be designed to provide comfort for everyone. The airflow distribution has been 'tuned’ to ensure that people in the last row stay cool and the gap between the seats in the middle helps.

With both rear seats folded, there’s 672 litres of space available. This is plenty for most people and can take 3 large suitcases or 4 golfbags or even a small bicycle – or a dog, as the publicity picture show. The rear door opens high up while the floor is just 500 mm from the road surface. Like other small MPVs, the spare wheel is hung below the rear end.

The sliding door offers the advantage of a wider opening (600 mm) for easier entry/exit and in tight parking spaces, it’s also useful as you don’t need a lot of space on either side to open the doors. We thought that the time taken to fully open the door would be long but it took just 5 seconds both ways, which is reasonable and won’t have someone getting drenched in the rain waiting to get in! The doors can be opened by remote control or by pressing a button on the dashboard (separate buttons for each door).

The dashboard has a double-layer design with a sort of 'shelf’ protruding towards the front occupants. In the middle of this shelf is panel for the air-conditioner controls and adjacent to it is the shift lever. The 2DIN audio system is further up while the instrument panel is set ahead of the driver. It is dominated by the arc of the speedometer with a small LCD showing the driving data including real-time fuel consumption. The tachometer is a graphic display on the upper left and the fuel gauge (also shown graphically) is on the upper right. Like the City and Jazz, there’s no coolant temperature gauge nowadays as it’s been deemed unnecessary. A blue light will come on when the engine is cold to remind the driver not to rev the engine hard and a red light will appear if there is a trend towards overheating. To maximize available space, the parking brake is operated by a foot pedal.

Kia Soul

The Kia Soul is a compact, mini MPV produced in South Korea for the global market. It was designed at Kia's design center in California, and unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Production began in late 2008, with the first vehicles appearing at European dealerships in February 2009 and North American dealerships in March 2009, as a 2010 model. The Soul comes in over 10,000 combinations of engines, colours, styling and accessories.

The North American version of the Soul is initially available with one of two inline four-cylinder gasoline engines. The base model is powered by a 1.6 litre unit producing 122 bhp (91 kW) and mated exclusively with a five-speed manual transmission. Higher trims feature a 2.0 litre unit producing 142 bhp (106 kW) connected to a standard five-speed manual transmission with a four-speed automatic available as a stand-alone option. A 1.6 litre diesel engine producing 128 bhp (95 kW) and 260 N·m (190 lb·ft) torque is offered in European models, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

The interior features two semi-bucket seats in the front. In the rear there are flat-folding seats that can be moved in order to increase storage space.
The Kia Soul will be sold with a four-speaker stereo system that includes a CD player, a USB port and Sirius Satellite Radio. Additional features available for upgrade include additional speakers, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and Bluetooth for hands-free connectivity.

There are many custom upgrades for the Kia Soul. These include 18" alloy wheels, cruise control, leather wrapped steering wheel, racing stripes, "dragon" and "houndstooth" graphics, and LED turn indicators.

Kia Soul earned Euro NCAP maximum five star safety rating. In 2009, According to Euro NCAP, The five star safety rating places Kia Soul among the safest B-segment family cars in the world. The Soul was awarded the maximum five star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). The Kia Soul awarded 'Top Safety Pick' from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US.

Daihatsu Move

The redesigned MOVE has been completely updated from the platform to the engine and developed with the aim of evolving on a new level that transcends its class. Two models have been created, the MOVE, based on the concept of "my energetic and versatile," and the MOVE Custom, which is based on the concept of "quality and mobile amenity."

Perodua also manufacture a version of the Move called the Kenari. Move is supplied with 660 cc, 850 cc and 1000 cc engine.

Naza Suria/ Kia Picanto new facelifted

The new facelifted Naza compact car, the Naza Suria which is a rebadged of Kia Picantois 40 mm longer, with an overall length of 3535 mm, featuring an extended, rounded nose and deeper, larger rear bumper.

Naza Forte

Naza Forte comes in 3 variants which is the 1.6 EX, 1.6SX & the 2.0SX.Externally the premium & basic Forte can be differentiated by looking at the wheels & door handles. The 1.6EX comes with cheap looking 195/65R 15inch Steel Wheel while the premium version gets a 215/45R 17inch alloy wheel. Chrome treatment is given to the SX variant while the EX door handles follows the body colour.

All variants comes with a four speed shiftronic transmission.Considering the fact that we are paying alot for the car here, the Forte should have been equipped with a 5-speeder instead. The 1.6 liter engine found under the hood is from the Gamma range while the 2.0liter heart hails from the more advance Theta family. This translates into the 2.0liter version having the same fuel consumption figure as the 1.6 version that stands at 7.0 liter per 100km.0-100km/h sprint takes you 12 seconds.

In terms of safety the 1.6liter EX has dual airbags,active headrest & Anti Lock Breaking System. Upgrade to the 1.6 SX & Naza will throw in ELectronic Stability control(ESC),Electronic Brakeforce Distribution(EBD),Brake Assist System & Traction Control System. The 2.0liter SX gets an additional 4 airbags in the form of side & curtain airbags to bring the number to 6.

Moving on to the interior, the 1.6 & 2.0liter SX gets a rear parking system & a 3-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel with tilt & telescopic column adjuster. The 2.0 liter SX gets what Kia calls it Motor driven Power Steering. This is an EPS system much like in the Civic, which uses an electric motor to drive the steering instead of it being directly hydraulically driven. This allows variable steering assistance – heavy at high speeds but lighter at low speeds to assist with parking.

Honda CR-Z

Honda debuted the CR-Z, concept, at the Tokyo Auto Show. The sporty hybrid coupe concept is supposedly very close to what the production version will look like. The production car will be a 2-seat hybrid.

The CR-Z has a 1.5 liter displacement, four cylinder gas engine with a six speed manual gearbox, marking a first for a hybrid.

The Hawk made history. This is one sweet motorcycle. Nimble, light, fun, great handling. The Honda Hawk GT was one of Honda’s most unique designs. Definitely one of my favorite ‘naked’ bikes.V-Twin, 647cc, water cooled, five speed transmission. The Hawk has achieved an almost cult-like status, with machines being modified for racing and being used to rack up very high mileages on the street.These little V-Twin sportbikes have become more popular since Honda stopped importing them to the USA.

Unicorn was the first bike launched by Honda under their fully owned arm in India. Prior to that, they had already established themselves in the scooter segment with 102cc Activas and Dios. Since then, Unicorn has been regarded as one of the most refined bikes in the country along with great mileage and adequate performance. Sporty and conventional are two words that best describe the Unicorn and we like its simple and well-poised looks. The bike comes in fantastic quality red, black, grey, blue and Silver paints.

The Unicorn has been gifted an engine developed specially for Indian conditions by Honda. The Unicorn engine is straightforward and delivers on all counts. This jewel of a motor is silken, purring to life with a light kick. Displacing 149.1cc its four-stroke unit offers a max output of 13.3bhp at 8000rpm. The bike does not give a sudden jolt of acceleration, but very efficiently increases the speed in a smooth fashion. The same acceleration power is retained as you go to higher speeds. Unicorn does a good job of constant acceleration for a long time with its 150cc engine.

Honda CR-V new facelift.

New Honda CR-V gain more power and fuel economy from the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. The 2010 CR-V now pumps out 180 hp (a respectable 8-percent increase), while both city and highway fuel economy ratings jump by 1 mpg to 21/28 mpg city/highway for the front-wheel-drive model, and 21/27 mpg for the all-wheel-drive CR-V.

Externally, a redesigned front fascia, hood, and rear bumper set the 2010 CR-V off from its predecessors. EX models also receive a new 17-inch, 10-spoke aluminum wheel.

Interior upgrades include wider front armrests, new fabric options, and reworked audio controls. A USB audio interface and automatic headlights will be standard on EX-L models, while a Bluetooth hands-free system will be included if buyers opt for the navigation system.

Honda Malaysia announced that all models distributed by the company are compatible with petrol RON95 (Research Octane Number 95). The Company announced this following the government's decision to increase the price of RON97, along with the introduction of a more affordable option, RON95, which will replace RON92. The new fuel is available at RM1.75 per litre effective 1^st September 2009.
