The program explores modernity as a historical
space and conceptual frame. The program puts forward
three programmatic ideas:
1) supporting research that demonstrates the rich and
complex historical legacies and entanglements between
Europe and the Middle East; 2) reexamining genealogical
notions of mythical 'beginnings', 'origins', and 'purity'
in relation to culture and society; and 3) rethinking
key concepts of a shared modernity in light of contemporary
cultural, social, and political entanglements that
supersede identity discourses as well as national,
cultural or regional canons and epistemologies that were
established in the nineteenth century.
The program 'Europe in the Middle East - the Middle East
in Europe' is funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
It supports and builds upon the following interconnected
research fields:

CITIES COMPARED: COSMOPOLITANISM IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
AND ADJACENT REGIONS
This research group is directed by Ulrike Freitag and
Nora Lafi, both of the Centre for Modern Oriental Studies,
Berlin. It contributes to the debate on cosmopolitanism
and civil society from the historical experience of
conviviality and socio-cultural, ethnic, and religious
differences in the cities around the Mediterranean;

ISLAMIC DISCOURSE CONTESTED: MIDDLE EASTERN AND EUROPEAN
PERSPECTIVES
This research group is directed by Gudrun Kraemer,
Institute for Islamic Studies, Freie Universitaet Berlin.
It analyzes modern Middle Eastern thought and discourses
in the framework of theories of multiple or reflexive
modernities;

PERSPECTIVES ON THE QUR'AN: NEGOTIATING DIFFERENT VIEWS
OF A SHARED HISTORY
This research group is directed by Angelika Neuwirth,
Seminar for Arabic Studies, Freie Universitaet Berlin,
and Stefan Wild, Universitaet Bonn. It situates the
foundational text of Islam within the religious landscape
of late antiquity and combines a historicization of its
genesis with an analysis of its reception and perception
in Europe and the Middle East;

TRAVELLING TRADITIONS: COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVES ON NEAR
EASTERN LITERATURES
This research group is directed by Friederike Pannewick,
Centrum fuer Nah- und Mitteloststudien, Philipps-Universitaet
Marburg, and Samah Selim, IREMAM, Aix-en-Provence. It
reassesses literary entanglements and processes of canonization
between Europe and the Middle East.

TRADITION AND THE CRITIQUE OF MODERNITY: SECULARISM,
FUNDAMENTALISM AND RELIGION FROM MIDDLE EASTERN PERSPECTIVES
Is a special forum, directed by Amnon Raz-Krakotzkin,
Ben Gurion University that attempts to rethink key concepts
of modernity like secularity, tradition, or religion in the
context of the experiences, interpretations, and critiques
of Jews, Arabs, and Muslims in the Middle East and in Europe.

PREREQUISITES AND APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The fellowships are intended above all for scholars of history,
literature, philology, political philosophy, religion and
sociology from the Middle East who want to carry out their
research projects in connection with the Berlin program.
Fellows gain the opportunity to pursue research projects
of their choice within the framework of one of the above-
mentioned research fields and in relation to the program
'Europe in the Middle East - the Middle East in Europe'.
In Berlin, they will be integrated into a university or non-
university research institute. The working language of the
research program is English.

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of 1.800 EUR (supplement
for accompanying spouses: 250 EUR) and are obliged to work in
Berlin and to help shape the seminars and working discussions
related to their research field.
As a rule, the fellowships begin on 1 October 2008 and end
on 31 July 2009. The applicant's doctorate should have been
completed no earlier than 2000.

An application should be made in explicit relation to one of
the research fields and consist of

- a curriculum vitae,
- a 2 to 4 page project sketch,
- a sample of scholarly work (maximum 20 pages from an article,
conference paper, or dissertation chapter),
- and a letter of recommendation by one university instructor.

The application should be submitted in paper form, by fax or
by E-mail in English and should be received by 31 January 2008,
sent in to:

Europe in the Middle East - the Middle East in Europe
c/o Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin
Attn: Georges Khalil
Wallotstrasse 19, 14193 Berlin
Fax +49 30 - 89 00 12 00
E-mail: khalil@wiko-berlin.de.

For further information on the program 'Europe in the Middle
East - the Middle East in Europe' and for detailed information
on the research fields, please see:
http://www.eume-berlin.de

For information on the research institutions in Berlin
participating in the program, please visit:
Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences:
http://www.bbaw.de/
Center for Literary Research:
http://www.zfl.gwz-berlin.de/
Centre for Modern Oriental Studies:
http://www.zmo.de/
Institute for Islamic Studies:
http://userpage.fu-berlin.de/~islamwi/
Seminar for Arabic Studies:
http://web.fu-berlin.de/semiarab/
Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin:
http://www.wiko-berlin.de/

Science 3 April 1998: Vol. 280. no. 5360, p. 15

Letters The Special News Report "Science in Southeast Asia" (6 Mar., p. 1465
<http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/summary/279/5356/1465 > ) presents
a valuable, comprehensive review of an important part of the world
joining the international scientific community.
However, I should like to comment on sending promising students overseas
for training (J. Mervis and D. Normile, 6 Mar., p. 1468
<http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/279/5356/1468> ). This is
only useful if returning students receive the opportunity to use their
overseas experience in their home country, which often cannot be
realized. Better is a sandwich-model of training with alternating stays
overseas and in the home country, concluding with a final examination in
the home country. With Ph.D. degrees, this is no problem if publications
in international journals are regarded as a decisive requirement for
such a degree. An advantage of this system is that students can already
introduce experience and techniques learned overseas in their home
country during their training period and can also transfer these to
their undergraduate students and even to guest students from their host
country. Also, the teaching staff of their home university has to make
itself familiar with the studies performed by such students elsewhere
for the evaluation of their examinations.

We have a valuable experience with this system. Two students from
Bandung (Indonesia) have worked in our department for four periods of 3
months per year (the maximum allowed stay with a tourist visa) subsi
dized from scratch by 12 Indonesian, Dutch, and international sources,
and they will receive their Ph.D. degrees in 1998 and 1999.

Jaap J. The Fellowship will result in the award
of a PhD and immerse the successful applicant in an unrivalled environment
for UK healthcare research. It is aimed at people committed to developing
their careers in primary care research to the benefit of the NHS.

The Fellowship is available over three years full-time or six years
part-time and includes a salary of up to £25, 000 per annum, UK/EU tuition
fees and an additional allowance towards research expenses and attendance at
scientific conferences. Applicants are welcomed worldwide, however non EU
candidates would need to be able to fund the difference between the UK/EU
and International rate of PhD tuition fee.
The NPCRDC and National Co-ordinating Centre for Research Capacity
Development (NCCRCD) are committed to developing the R&D structure of
primary health care. NPCRDC is an intellectually stimulating and active
multi-disciplinary research environment. Established by the Department of
Health in 1995 to undertake a programme of policy related research in
primary care we are a collaboration between the Universities of Manchester
and York with our main base at the University of Manchester. The
multidisciplinary NPCRDC team will provide academic supervision for the
successful candidate. Although we expect most applicants to locate their
research at the Universities of Manchester or York, we will consider those
unable to relocate if their research could be co-supervised at another
institution with a strong track record in the relevant area of research.

PhD projects conducted under the Fellowship need to relate to one or more of
the Centre's research themes. These include:

 - Healthcare Organisation and the Impact upon Primary Care Outcomes
 - Measuring and Improving Quality of Primary Care
 - Self Management (with particular reference to chronic disease)
 - Changes in the Primary Care Workforce and affects on Patient Care
 - Primary Care Mental Health

Applicants can either suggest a project under one of the above themes or
request information on available projects through the Postgraduate
Admissions Tutor (details below).

Applicants should hold a good undergraduate degree (2.1. or higher) in a
relevant discipline, such as epidemiology, biostatistics, economics, social
sciences, health informatics, psychology, management sciences, social policy
and sociology, together with the various clinical specialties. A solid
grounding in research methodology is needed to pursue a PhD. Ideally, you
should have post-graduate training in research at the Masters level or its
equivalent.

Applications should include:
• A Curriculum Vitae providing a clear description of the nature of prior
research training and experience and listing any associated research grants
or publications. Please state your current salary (or salary expectation if
unemployed).

• An accompanying statement which:
- indicates in which research theme the candidate would prefer to work and
why
- states whether the candidate wishes to take up a full time or part time
Fellowship
- describes how the Fellowship will progress the candidate's career
intentions and enhance the NHS R&D capacity.

• The names and addresses of three referees.

Applicants requiring further information or wishing to discuss research
proposals should contact Dr Stephen Campbell:
stephen.campbell@manchester.ac.uk
0161 275 7655

Further information is also available on the NPCRDC website:
www.npcrdc.ac.uk

Completed applications should be returned to:

Jane Castree
National Primary Care Research and Development Centre
5th Floor, Williamson Building, Oxford Road
Manchester, M13 9PL
jane.castree@manchester.ac.uk

Completed applications must be received no later than *4.30pm on 16 November
2007*
Interviews will be held the week beginning 10 December 2007 and involve a
short presentation on your research proposal

EU: Open door for qualified workers

Open door for qualified workers
http://ec.europa.eu/news/employment/071023_1_en.htm

As Europe's population ages, economic immigrants may boost the declining
labour force.

A new commission proposal would see a blue card permit system introduced for
qualified immigrants, a one-stop shop for people seeking work and
residence, and clearer rights for people working legally in the EU (23
October).

As a consequence of its aging population, Europe could soon experience a
real shortage of qualified workers. To maintain economic growth in the EU,
Europe has to become a real magnet for highly-qualified workers, many of
whom currently prefer the US, Canada or Australia. Hence the proposal for a
European blue card – a single work and residence permit giving access to a
range of socio-economic rights, especially family
reunification< http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/fsj/immigration/family/fsj_immigration_family_en.htm>.
Each EU country would still be free to decide the number of immigrant
workers it could admit.

In order to avoid a damaging brain drain in developing countries, the
commission proposes setting standards to limit or ban active recruitment
there.

A one-stop shop would be set up for all potential
workers<http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/fsj/immigration/work/fsj_immigration_work_en.htm>,
currently confronted with 27 different procedures.

The commission also wants legal immigrants to have the same rights as EU
citizens (working conditions, salary, education, social security). This
would both ensure better
integration< http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/fsj/immigration/integration/fsj_immigration_integration_en.htm>of
immigrants, and protect European businesses against unfair competition
based on cheap labour.

European immigration
policy<http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/fsj/immigration/fsj_immigration_intro_en.htm>

Immigration and integration - the European challenge
<http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=6JzC4kSAoSI>

NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts: October 26, 2007

Weekly NIH Funding Opportunities and Notices
NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts
October 26, 2007
Table of Contents (TOC)
Web Version

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notices
 a.. This project will
build on initial evaluation work carried out at the Hamilton Institute
with a view to enhancing our understanding of the new issues raised
by these, and other, proposed changes and taking an active role in
the current IRTF/IETF review process.

IPv6 is a replacement for the Internet's transport layer, which has
been developed by the IETF over the last 15 years. A number of
standards now make use of IPv6, including the Internet Messaging
System (IMS). The Hamilton Institute is to provide and support IPv6
test-bed connectivity between the partners of the IMS ARCS
( www.ims-arcs.ie).

Applicants should have a basic understanding of IP networking and
should have some familiarity with the configuration and use of Linux
or BSD systems. Good numerate and analytic skills will be essential,
and the candidate should be comfortable with scripting and programming.

The Hamilton Institute (www.hamilton.ie) is committed to research
excellence. These
posts offer an exciting opportunity for successful candidates to
tackle fundamental research problems within a stimulating multi-
disciplinary research environment with state of the art facilities
and strong links to the international research community.

MSc Stipend: €21000 (tax free)

To apply, candidates should submit a detailed CV, motivation letter,
and the names and addresses of two referees for letters of
recommendation to: hamilton@nuim.ie. Informal enquiries to Prof.
Doug Leith (doug.leith@nuim.ie) or Dr. David Malone
(david.malone@nuim.ie).

Two PhD positions at the University of Amsterdam

University of Amsterdam
Building on its previous research in the history of econometrics,
modelling and measurement in economics, the History and Methodology
Group of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the UvA is starting
a new project. A recently awarded innovational research grant (VIDI)
from the Netherlands Science Foundation (NWO) will enable us to write
a history of observational practices in economics. We invite
applications for Two PhD positions in the History and Methodology of
Economics at the Universiteit van Amsterdam full time vacancy number
07-5043 For both internal and external candidates

The project will investigate the observational technologies and
practices economists use and used to identify their objects of study
and to investigate their nature. The project will link these
technologies and practices to three different sites of observation,
each of which has its own particular history: the 'armchair', the
'observatory' and the 'laboratory'. The PhD candidates will be
expected to write a historical and comparative study on one of the last two mentioned sub-projects.

We ask:
The position is open to excellent students with a Master's or
equivalent in Economics, Cognitive Psychology or other social science,
or in the History of the Sciences / Social Sciences. The students
should have or be ready to acquire knowledge of historical and
ethnographical methods of research.

We offer:
An inspiring international research environment. veteran journalist Peta Thornycroft said. But despite the constant risk to her personal safety as one of the country's few remaining independent journalists, and her despair at the results of the government's policies and human rights abuses, she pushes herself to continue because "it's a story that has to be told."

Thornycroft, Mexican journalist Lydia Cacho, Ethiopia's Serkalem Fasil, and six Iraqi women journalists from the McClatchy News Baghdad bureau all were recognized for 2007 by the International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) for their dedication to their profession and their personal bravery.

IWMF Executive Director Jane Ransom told USINFO her organization has been recognizing brave and dedicated women journalists for 18 years, also honoring individuals such as CNN's Christiane Amanpour, South Africa's Gwen Lister, the late Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya and the Christian Science Monitor's Jill Carroll.

"The award itself is to honor and celebrate women who have exhibited exceptional bravery in the line of their reporting duties in bringing the truth to people," Ransom said, adding that the attention gained through the award can provide the winners with added protection from hostile governments.

"Many of the awardees have told us that they've gotten a lot of visibility in their own countries as a result of receiving the award, which they feel makes it harder for their governments to attack them, just because it can't be done quietly when you're a well-known person," Ransom said. "We're letting them know that people in the United States are watching what's going on here."

SHINING A BRIGHT LIGHT ON ABUSES IN ZIMBABWE

Along with Thornycroft's many years of intrepid reporting from Zimbabwe, her dedication to training younger journalists in southern Africa, including women, earned her the IWMF's Lifetime Achievement Award.

At a panel discussion in Washington October 25, Thornycroft said that in order to deal with the threats she faces from the authorities, "I make a plan every day." She described disguising herself while traveling through the country to do her job and risking severe consequences such as imprisonment in one of Zimbabwe's notorious jails if she is discovered.

Thornycroft has spent decades covering the country's decline under President Robert Mugabe, even renouncing her British citizenship after the government outlawed the presence of foreign journalists so she could continue documenting human rights abuses under the oppressive regime. She related her anger at witnessing the country's complete reversal from being one of Africa's best-educated countries and a food exporter with falling rates of HIV infection. Her professional demand to report the news freely, fairly and accurately has kept her going, she said.

"I don't think I make any difference. I'm sorry about that," she told the audience. "I'm constantly hacking on about the appalling way people are treated, the appalling abuses in the police cells. … [but] the government seems to be completely impervious to the suffering that they have to be able to see. … They are just wasting away this clever, talented nation."

"I just carry on because it's there and it's a story that has to be told," she said. "I don't really know any other kind of life."

GIVING A VOICE TO MEXICO'S POOR

Similarly, Mexican journalist Lydia Cacho, who won one of the IWMF's Courage in Journalism awards, said she perseveres in behalf of the millions of Mexicans who live without the means to find work or feed their families. She said approximately 430,000 of Mexico's poor attempt to enter the United States every year. "I try to tell their stories because I have a voice and they don't," Cacho said.

Cacho exposed a prominent businessman who she charged was behind a pedophile ring that targets girls from Cancun's poor community. After she went public with her findings, she was abducted by Mexican police at the apparent behest of a Mexican state governor. During her ordeal, she feared that her abductors planned to rape her.

Mexico's Supreme Court has intervened to investigate Cacho's accusations, and she said she remains hopeful that the judicial system will strip the Mexican governor's legal immunity so that he can also face charges.

The IWMF also recognized Ethiopia's Serkalem Fasil, who was jailed and, under deplorable conditions, delivered a child prematurely. She was incarcerated because of articles her publications carried that were critical of the government during the May 2005 elections. According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, only China and Cuba have a worse ranking than Ethiopia for their treatment of journalists.

The third courage award was shared by six Iraqi women journalists who work for the McClatchy News bureau in Baghdad. All six tell the story of life amidst Iraq's continuing violence despite risks to themselves and their families if they are ever discovered.

"I have been in several situations where I have said my last prayer, for certainty that I was going to be killed," one of the McClatchy journalists said. "It was on the way to work, on the way back from work, terrifying situations are in our path every day. We have learned to live with that fear. Otherwise we would sit in our homes, close our doors, and even then we're not safe," she said.

Ransom said her staff received 50 nominations in 2007 for her organization's annual Lifetime Achievement and Courage in Journalism awards. They decided to honor Thornycroft, Cacho, Fasil and the McClatchy journalists after carefully considering the significance of their risks and the press restrictions under which they operate.

"We tend to take people out who have had, maybe, one brush with danger and … look at people who have been reporting over a long period of time in dangerous circumstances or were imprisoned for a long period of time," Ransom said.

More information ( http://www.iwmf.org/) on the 2007 award winners is available on the IWMF Web site.

For additional information on U.S. policy, see Freedom of the Press ( http://usinfo.state.gov/dhr/democracy/rule_of_law/press_freedom.html).

(USINFO is a product of the Bureau of International Information Programs, U.S. Department of State. Web site: http://usinfo.state.gov)
NNNN

Best regards,

Public Affairs Section
Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan 4 jakarta 10110
email: In this new project we want to develop
multi-stage microcoolers that are able to reach even lower temperatures
(~30K), and small sorption compressors [2] that can replace the pressurized
gas bottles, and thus realize closed-cycle microcooling systems. The PhD
should focus on the thermodynamics and design of multi-stage coolers, on the
mechanism of clogging caused by water deposition, and measures to prevent
this to occur [3], and on the development of a full package design
(including vacuum). In parallel, a post-doc researcher will be appointed in
the project focusing on the utilization of results in two demonstrator
pilots. In these pilots, LNAs will be cooled with a number of cooler tips
fed by a single sorption compressor.

Requirements
------------------------------
Required education/skills:University Graduate
The PhD should focus on the thermodynamics and design of multi-stage
coolers, on the mechanism of clogging caused by water deposition, and
measures to prevent this to occur [3], and on the development of a full
package design (including vacuum)
Job type: Research / Advising

Workfield(s):
- Research trainees, non-tenured lecturers, researchers(Scientific
discipline: Engineering)

Organization
------------------------------
University of Twente
Low-Temperature division
The Faculty of Science and Technology (700 faculty members, 1100 students)
offers a range of bachelor and master courses (NanoTechnology, Applied
Physics, Chemical Engineering and Technical Medicine). The faculty's
research is organized in three of the university's interdisciplinary
research institutes: MESA , BMTI, and IMPACT. These institutes increase the
vitality of research by enabling collaboration between programs and
disciplines, by providing shared facilities, and by attracting funding for
joint projects. They also provide a conduit to industrial partners and help
in attracting new faculty.

In the Low-Temperature division (LT) of the University of Twente (UT)
cryogenic cooling based on MEMS technology has been investigated for about a
decade. In this research, we aim to realize extremely small coolers by means
of micromachining technologies (MEMS) for reaching cryogenic temperatures,
well below 120 K, i.e. 150 oC. There is a growing need for these
microcoolers for cooling advanced electronics, such as low-noise amplifiers
(LNAs), detectors, superconducting circuits, etc. In a previous project [1],
we developed a miniature 100 K cooler in which gas is expanded that is
supplied by a high-pressure gas bottle (see figure).

Conditions of employment
------------------------------
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2000 - 2500

Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2502
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 year
Maximum hours per week: 38

Additional conditions of employment:
We offer an interesting temporary research position . You will be appointed
for a period of four year, with an assessment within one year. A positive
assessment will secure the continuation of the appointment for another three
years. Wageningen, 6700 HB (Gelderland), 38 hours per week

Job description
------------------------------
Title subproject
Effect of nutritional stressors on epithelial injury-signalling secretome in
small intestine, and identification of biomarkers of epithelial integrity.

Project description
Within the gut, impaired epithelial integrity is regarded as an important
risk factor in the initiation and complex (patho)physiology of common
nutrition-related intestinal disorders. This project focuses on the
elucidation of relevant biomarkers for gut health as well as a model
platform to efficiently discover, select and validate potential gut
health-promoting foods, food ingredients, and probiotics in order to
facilitate evidence-based nutrition-relevant health claims for consumers.

Increased cell turnover is a hallmark of the stressed and under-performing
small intestinal epithelium, indicating that the balanced proliferation and
cell death is a sensitive determinant of the integrity and function of the
epithelium. The feed-back mechanism and its players at the molecular level
that are responsible to maintain this balance are the prime target of this
subproject.

The PhD student will perform experiments in animals and humans in order to
find and characterise biomolecules that are secreted by the small intestinal
epithelium, when this epithelium is damaged by nutrition-related compounds.
The mechanism(s) by which these secreted molecules affect the cell turnover
of the epithelium will be determined. Relevant biomolecules will be
validated as biomarkers for small intestinal epithelial integrity and gut
health and used to develop cell line models that enable screening of food
compounds with a beneficial effect on small intestinal epithelial integrity.

Requirements
------------------------------
Required education/skills:University Graduate
Main tasks and responsibilities
The PhD student is responsible for:
•contributing to the full project plan
•staying abreast of developments in his scientific discipline by keeping up
with the scientific literature in his field and visiting scientific meetings
•generating ideas within the scope of the defined subject
•supervising of research assistants and students, where appropriate
•delivering results in line with the project plan milestones and
deliverables
•keeping up with the latest scientific developments and integrating these in
the project
•converting data and results of the sub-project into overview reports
•keeping traceable records of all results and analyses according to the lab
journal procedure
•writing high-quality clearly written papers about the results obtained and
getting these published in high–impact scientific journals
•completing a thesis after 4 years.
Job type: Research / Advising
Workfield(s):
- Teaching & Research(Scientific discipline: Natural Sciences)

Organization
------------------------------
Wageningen University and Research Centre
Division of Human Nutrition, in a TI Food and Nutrition project.

Conditions of employment
------------------------------
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 1500 - 2000
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: For a period of 4 years
Maximum hours per week: 38

Additional Information
------------------------------
Additional information about the vacancy can be obtained from:

Dr. R. van der Meer, Senior Scientist
Telephone number: 31 317 485 186
E-mail address: roelof.vandermeer@wur.nl

Or Dr. J.
