Gnumeric is a free spreadsheet program that is part of the GNOME desktop and has Windows installers available. It is intended to be a free replacement for proprietary spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel, which it broadly and openly emulates. Gnumeric was created and developed by Miguel de Icaza, but he has since moved on to other projects. The current maintainer is Jody Goldberg.

Gnumeric has the ability to import and export data in several file formats, including CSV, Microsoft Excel, HTML, LaTeX, Lotus 1-2-3, OpenDocument and Quattro Pro; its native format is the Gnumeric file format (.gnm or .gnumeric), an XML file compressed with gzip.^[1] It includes all of the spreadsheet functions of the North American edition of Microsoft Excel and many functions unique to Gnumeric. Pivot tables and conditional formatting are not yet supported but are planned for future versions.

Gnumeric's accuracy^[2] ^[3] has helped it to establish a niche among people using it for statistical an alysis and other scientific tasks.^{[citation needed]} For improving the accuracy of Gnumeric, the developers are cooperating with the R Project.

Gnumeric has a different interface for the creation and editing of graphs than the competing software. For editing a graph, Gnumeric displays a window where all the elements of the graph are listed. Other spreadsheet programs typically require the user to select the individual elements of the graph in the graph itself in order to edit them.

Gmsh: a three-dimensional finite element mesh generator with built-in pre- and post-processing facilities

Gmsh is an automatic 3D finite element grid generator with a built-in CAD engine and post-processor. Its design goal is to provide a simple meshing tool for academic problems with parametric input and advanced visualization capabilities.

Gmsh is built around four modules: geometry, mesh, solver and post-processing. The specification of any input to these modules is done either interactively using the graphical user interface or in ASCII text files using Gmsh's own scripting language.

Genius is a general purpose calculator program similiar in some aspects to BC, Matlab, Maple or Mathematica. It is useful both as a simple calculator and as a research or educational tool. The syntax is very intuitive and is designed to mimic how mathematics is usually written. GEL is the name of its extention language, it stands for Genius Extension Language, clever isn't it? In fact, many of the standard genius functions are written in GEL itself.

What can it do?

Arbitrary precision ints, multiple precision floats.
Rational numbers, stored as quotient and denominator.
Complex numbers, stored in cartesian coordinates as usual.
Math-like-looking expressions, tries to be as much a what-you-mean-is-what-Genius-understands, up to a limit of course.
Matrix calculations / Linear Algebra, with many related functions.
Number theory.
Calculus, numerical and even very limited symbolic calculations.
Statistics, all the basic statistical functions.
Numerical equation solving, polynomial roots, etc...
Combinatorics.
Most common elementary / trigonometric functions.
Modular arithmetic, including inversions and modular arithmetic on matrices.
A complete programming language, with automatic typing. In fact large part of Genius standard library is written in GEL.
2D Function line plots, standard 2D graphs of up to 10 functions at once, with possibility to export to EPS or PNG.
Parametric plots, with possibility to export to EPS or PNG.
3D Function surface plots, with possibility to export to EPS or PNG
Slopefield/Vectorfield plotting.
GUI IDE where you can edit and run/test your programs.
Can output matrices in LaTeX, Troff (eqn) or MathML, this is I think a very cool feature that allows you to copy stuff directly from Genius to a document in LaTeX, troff or MathML.

Hello everyone,

after listened to the new gnome commander release I decided to use my
"working progress" packaging technology to build a SpatialBundle of latest
gnome commander.
This resolve into just one file cliccable that does not require any
installation nor root password to play.
Just download, add exec properties bit and simply click!!
It run out of the box as it is.
Compiled and packaged under Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 works very well into
Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10.
No dependencies libs required other provided from a clean standard Ubuntu
installation.
