Mitsubishi Eclipse 2012 SE Special Edition Series

The fourth generation Mitsubishi Eclipse is nearing the end of its career and to mark the occasion, the Japanese manufacturer has announced a final special edition for the Coupe and Spyder models.

Mitsubishi will cease production of the Eclipse after the upcoming 2012 model year without offering a replacement model, the SE Special Edition is the manufacturer's way of saying goodbye to a model series produced since 1989.

Eclipse trim levels (GS, GS Sport and GT) will be available as SE Special Edition versions which includes “SE” side decals, black side mirrors and 18-inch dark finish alloy wheels, along with the high-end standard features available on the Eclipse GS Sport versions of both the coupe and convertible models.

Standard equipment includes leather upholstery with heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver's seat, rearview camera, Bluetooth hands-free phone access, heated side mirrors and a 9-speaker, 650-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system with SIRIUS satellite radio. The coupe version also includes a sunroof.

The Eclipse SE Special Edition will be available with two engine options: a naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 162-horsepower (in the GS/GS Sport models) or a 265-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 engine (for the GT model).

The latter is mated to a 5-speed Sportronic automatic transmission that allows the driver to manually select gearshifts when desired. GT-based SE models also get an automatic climate control system.

Prices have not yet been announced.

Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X GSR Premium Edition Introduced in Japan

Mitsubishi has refreshed its 2009 Lancer Evolution X line-up with the introduction of a new top-of-the-line GSR Premium edition that sits above the RS and GSR models. No different mechanically from the other EVO Xs, the Premium edition is distinguished on the outside by the 18-inch BBS alloy wheels, the front fog lights and the body colored hood and fender scoops while it also features a set of Bilstein shocks.

Inside the GSR Premium gets Recaro leather bucket seats, a satellite navigation system, side and curtain airbags as well as a Rockford Fosgate audio system with nine-speakers.

For the 2009MY, the Japanese-market Lancer EVO X range also benefits from minor revisions to the instrument panel and a new floor console.

Prices for the 009 Mitsubishi Lancer EXO X GSR Premium edition are set in Japan at 4,798,500 Yen ($48,250 US) for the version equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox 5,050,000 Yen ($50,785 US) for the Twin Clutch-SST model.

2011 NYIAS: New Scion FR-S Concept to the FT-86

The New York Auto Show, Scion’s version of the Toyota FT-86 sports coupe concept, finally made its world premiere today.

The study is named FR-S, which stands for ‘Front-Engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport’, though we prefer the definition given by Jack Hollis, Scion vice president, during the New York Show presentation. “FR-S stands for Front-engine… Rear-wheel drive… Sport.

Though it’s hard to pinpoint all the changes without having the cars side by side, the photos reveal a tweaked front end with revamped headlamps and a different bumper design without the aftermarket like add-on LED strips.

Looking at the coupe’s profile, we see beefier and more heavily sculptured front and rear fenders plus new side sills and mirrors, and larger alloy wheels with a different design.

In addition, the FT-86 II’s gaudy fender air vents have been removed.

Scion’s interpretation of the FT-86 includes a new rear fascia with a more protruding boot design that ditches the tuner-esque rear wing, different tail lamps and an impressive rear diffuser.

Other changes include the roof that projects into the rear windshield.

However, the company revealed that the flat four engine will incorporate Toyota’s D4-S injection system, which utilizes both direct and port injection, resulting in increased horsepower and torque throughout the entire powerband, without sacrificing MPG – or at least that’s what the company claims.

Geneva 2011: Toyota FT-86 II Concept (Updated)

Toyota has revealed photos of the second iteration of its FT-86 Concept car that is said to be very close to the actual production version due to go on sale in 2012. The Geneva Motor Show FT-86 II features several styling differences over the original concept shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.

First off, Toyota's designers restyled the coupe's profile by eliminating the lower swoop line and adding a new beltline that starts from the front wheel arch with a cheesy air vent and finishes off on the tip of the rear window, which itself has grown in size.

In addition, Toyota also split the front window and abolished the blacked out A-Column finish, while the rear wheel arches are more pronounced and there are new side rocker panels.

At the front end there's a new bumper with a larger center grille and more concave surfaces on both corners, while Toyota also threw in a pair of gaudy looking LED daytime running lights.

Finally, Toyota revamped the FT-86's rear end with new standalone, protruding tail lamps and a different treatment for the bumper that houses a more pronounced diffuser and large tail pipes on either side.

The re-sculptured boot lid and the fitment of a fixed wing round off the styling changes.

The overall feeling we get is that Toyota went all 'Fast and Furious' with the FT-86's redesign making the coupe look unnecessary busy and ultimately, far less sleek compared to the original concept.

The company said the new concept measures 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,270mm high, meaning it has grown 75mm in length, 35mm in width, and 10mm in height while riding on the same 2,570mm long wheelbase as the FT-86 I.

The rest of the specs remain a secret for now as the only details we know for sure is that the FT-86 will get a Subaru-sourced boxer engine with power being delivered to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

The same setup will be used on Subaru's version of the FT-86 that was also on display at the Geneva Motor Show, albeit with a see-through plastic body.

Transformers Film Ford Mustang Decepticon for Sale on eBay

Is US$130,000 a little too much to be paying for a Vin Diesel-driven Dodge Charger R/T? Do you think the home of the American muscle car is Dearborn? Is your DVD collection populated with Bad Boys and Pearl Harbour instead of xXx and Stealth?

Carscoop hears you, and so does MotoeXotica of St. Louis. On eBay right now is the second of three quasi-Police issue Saleen Mustangs built for the first Transformers film in 2007.

The Mustang, which played the Decepticon Barricade in the movie, has all the Saleen goodies including a "3V modified" engine, 5sp manual tranny, 20 inch alloys as well as exterior, suspension and exhaust upgrades.

Saleen then handed the car over to the movie's FX department who added the police pushbar, decals and a host of flashing police lights. The only downside is the absence of a supercharger, which was removed so it would not interfere with the microphones placed inside the car during filming.

The car has been well looked after with 7,200 original miles (11,587 km) on the clock, and is undamaged and 100% street legal. The bidding is currently stalled at US$35,100, which is less than the (undisclosed) reserve price.

Proton Rebadges Lotus Europa to Create Lekir Sports Concept

Taking center stage at Proton's 2010 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show booth alongside the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO-esque Jebat study, is yet one more concept model based on another manufacturer's vehicle, the Lekir.

This time, Proton looked into its own car bin and in particular, Lotus, which it acquired back in 1994, as the Lekir is essentially a rebagded Europa coupe. Mind you, it's not the first time we've seen the Europa wearing different logos as Dodge displayed an EV concept of the model at the 2009 Detroit Show.

Depending on which part of Proton's description of the car you read, the Lekir is powered either by a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit or a 1.6-liter engine with some 220-ponies (167kW).

Malaysia's state-controlled carmaker didn't say whether it plans to resurrect the Europa as a Proton.

2011 Detroit Motor Show

One of the largest and most important motor shows of the year, the 2011 edition of the North American International Auto Show [NAIAS], kicks off next week in Detroit. Even though many automakers are still keeping their cards under the table, Autonews published a list of new production models and concept studies that are expected to make their world premiere at Detroit's Cobo Center. The list includes a variety of vehicles ranging from GM's Chevrolet Sonic subcompact to Volkswagen's NMS sedan which will replace the Passat in the U.S. market. More details on the cars that are scheduled to debut in Detroit after the break.

Audi

At the center of Audi’s booth we’ll find the 2012 A6, which adopts styling cues from the A7 and A8 models. Considered to be a crucial car for the German maker’s U.S. strategy, the luxury sedan will be offered at launch with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine, but, according to AN, Audi is also considering the introduction of a six-cylinder diesel in the States. The A6 will go on sale in the second half of 2011.

BMW

This year’s NAIAS will see the world premiere of the 2012 BMW 650i Convertible. Powered by a 400 hp 4.4-liter force inducted V8, the open top model, much to the delight of purists, will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as well as an eight-speed automatic.

Other highlights of the BMW stand will include the face-lifted 1-Series Coupe and Convertible and the brand new 335-horsepower 1-Series M Coupe. All the aforementioned models will go on sale in the spring.

Buick

Buick is expected to present the Verano compact sedan, which is based on the China-market Excelle GT, with both variants borrowing their underpinnings from the Opel Astra.

BYD

The Chinese maker is said to unwrap the S6DM plug-in hybrid SUV Concept, an eco-friendly variant of the S6.

Chevrolet

Chevrolet will bring to Detroit the 2012 Sonic that replaces the Aveo subcompact. It will eventually be offered in both hatchback and sedan versions.

Chrysler

The most important Chrysler model in Motor City will be the 2011 Chrysler 300, which features softer and more elegant lines than its predecessor, a revamped interior and two engine choices: the 290 hp 3.6-liter V6 and a 5.7-liter V8 Hemi. Sales will start in the first quarter of 2011.

Ford

Marking Ford’s return to the U.S. minivan market, the Focus-based2012 C-Max features sliding rear doors and a new, 1.6-liter Ecoboost direct injected/turbocharged powerplant. According to AN, Ford also could reveal further information about alternative powertrain vehicles derived from the C-Max platform.

As previously reported, we can also expect to see a production-ready concept version for a common replacement for the European Kuga and the U.S.-market Escape crossovers.

GMC

The star of this year’s GMC line-up will be the Sierra All-Terrain HD Concept. Powered by GM’s 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8, which is capable of 397 hp and 1,037 Nm (765 lb-ft) of torque, the pick-up promises to be a trusty “workhorse”. The styling could preview the next generation of the Sierra which is expected to launch in 2014. The next Sierra will be one of the first trucks to shed weight in order to comply with new fuel economy standards.

Honda

The Japanese automaker will try to create as much hype as it can around a design study previewing the upcoming ninth-generation2012 Civic, scheduled to hit North American showrooms in March.

Hyundai

The crowds attending the Detroit Motor Show will get to see the production version of the Hyundai Veloster coupe, designed to compete with the Honda CR-Z. Powered by a 140 hp 1.6-liter gasoline engine with direct injection, the sporty Hyundai is expected to return up to 40 US mpg. According to Hyundai North America CEO John Krafcik, the Veloster will be released in 2011 as a 2012 model.

The Curb crossover concept, said to preview a new design language for the company, will be another highlight of the Korean maker’s stand.

Jeep

Jeep recently unveiled the 2011MY Compass crossover, a more upscale model featuring a Grand Cherokee-style nose-job and a $19,295 MSRP or almost $4,000 more than the 2010MY. Only time will tell if customers will find the improvements worthy of the heftier price tag, but until then they can see the updated version at NAIAS.

Kia

Aside from a teaser rendering, Kia hasn’t released much information about the KV7 crossover concept, but the bold lines and gullwing rear doors look neat.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes is expected to launch several new or refreshed models this year, but one of the most important vehicle is the face-lifted 2012 C-Class, which will bow in Detroit. Changes include exterior and interior revisions, while U.S.-spec cars will see the return of a four-cylinder engine in the form of a turbocharged 201 hp 1.8-liter unit, alongside a new, 300-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. Sales are expected to start in July.

MINI

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of its U.S. re-launch, MINI will present the Paceman coupe crossover concept. The design study teases an upcoming series model, which will strive to translate the X6’s success into a smaller niche.

Porsche

Porsche has recently confirmed that it will premiere a brand new model at the 2011 Detroit Motor Show, but it hasn’t released any information. The Detroit car could be anything from a 911 successor to the Cajun small SUV, but we’re secretly rooting for the production version of the918 hybrid supercar pictured here.

Toyota

Toyota’s 2011 Detroit line-up will be all about extending its Prius line-up. The list of new models includes the Prius Plug-in, a compact minivan, which, according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filings, will be dubbed Prius V, and a Prius-branded concept car.

Volkswagen

The 2011 North American International Auto Show will mark the world premiere of the much-anticipated Volkswagen NMS (New Mid-sized Sedan) that will be built at the German maker’s new U.S. factory in Chattanooga, Tennesse. It will go on sale in the second half of the year.

Audi Ready Mid-Engine R5 Sports Car

Audi is planning to introduce a mid-engined sports car called the R5. Said to be positioned between the more mainstream TT and the flagship R8, the R5 is believed to be based on the VW Group's forthcoming MiMo (as in "MittelMotor") mid-engine sports car platform, which will also be used on future Porsche and VW models.

The same inside sources imply that the R5 will be available in both coupe and convertible forms, with styling cues borrowed from Audi's E-tron and E-tron Spyder concepts.

The R5 is said to measure only 3.9 meters (153.5 inches) in length, or roughly the same as a Lotus Exige. Being super-compact in dimensions means that weight should be kept low, and that is a definite advantage. The entire history of Lotus is based on this concept, with considerable success.

The 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged mill, sourced from the TT-RS, would most likely be the range-topper. With somewhere around 350 hp (261 kW) on tap, it would surely deliver "the goods" in a lightweight sports car. Smaller displacement inline-fours such as the 2.0-liter TSI, should also be in the mix.
I wouldn't exclude a hybrid variant either, as "green" sports cars are becoming increasingly popular these days.

We still have a long way to go until we hear something official about the R5, but we'll keep an eye open for any developments.

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces the launch in Japan today of the redesigned "Mark X", which furthers the series' "sporty and luxurious" concept by offering enhanced quality in an authentic rear-wheel-drive sedan.

The design concept behind the Marx X is "glam tech"—combining the visual "glamour" conveyed by the vehicle with the "high-tech" expression of its modern and precise feel. The result is subtle contrast as well as a dynamic and stylish form.

The vehicle's silhouette is smooth and elegant, with expansive front and rear pillars to emphasize integration with the underbody.

The 1,435 mm height and 20 mm expansion for both width and track give the vehicle a low center of gravity.

Rear-wheel drive allows a front-and-rear weight distribution ratio of 54:46 for stable driving.

Improved safety features

When cornering with the headlights on, the Intelligent AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System) shifts the low beams to match the steering angle and vehicle speed, thereby enhancing visibility in the direction the vehicle is moving.

The new Radar Cruise Control system, equipped with a brake-control function, detects and monitors the preceding vehicle, maintaining a fixed distance, in line with the preceding vehicle's speed, within a preset speed range.

Hill-start Assist Control prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when switching from the brake to the accelerator during a start on a steep hill.

Comfort features enhance driving pleasure

The multi-information display, which indicates average fuel efficiency, possible cruising distance and other data, features enhanced visibility through the adoption of a high-contrast white, organic electroluminescent (EL) display.

Fully automatic independent temperature controls for the driver and passenger sides—standard on all models—feature a function to remove pollen, dust and other impurities from the air in the cabin. Meanwhile, Plasmacluster Ions^®3 technology combats bacteria and creates a comfortable cabin atmosphere through the balanced release of positive and negative ions.

The 480-liter⁴ trunk is roomy enough to accommodate four golf bags.

An HDD navigation system (compatible with the G-BOOK mX telematics service) features multimedia and other advanced functions such as Map on Demand, which provides automatic map and information updates and door-to-door guidance that pinpoints directions to a destination.

The premium models come with a G-BOOK mX telematics service-compatible HDD navigation system with built-in terrestrial digital TV tuner and gear-shifting functions for driver support in merging and exiting and at intersections; 12 speakers optimally placed to provide sound quality comparable to a live performance.

The Intelligent Parking Assist system uses ultrasonic sensors installed in the front of the vehicle to detect parking-space parameters and help the driver parallel park or back into a parking space by informing the driver when to turn the steering wheel and where to start backing up.

Reduced environmental impact

Efforts were made to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. The 2.5-liter two-wheel-drive models have a fuel efficiency of 13.0km/l⁵, while the 3.5-liter two-wheel-drive models have one of 10.2km/l⁵, thus placing both at the top of their vehicle classes¹.
All vehicles in the series achieve emission levels 75% lower than the 2005 level required under the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles.

The Relax Selection two-wheel-drive models have fuel efficiency that exceeds by 15% the level stipulated in the Japanese 2010 standards set out under the Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy, thereby qualifying them for incentives and subsidies under the Japanese government's taxation system for environmentally friendly vehicles.

All 2.5-liter models meet the Japanese 2010 standards and qualify for subsidies⁶.

An Eco Driving Indicator that lights up to signify fuel-efficient vehicle operation and an Eco Zone Indicator that shows throttle use—standard on all models—raise driver awareness of environmentally considerate driving.

Eco-VAS (Eco-Vehicle Assessment System)—Toyota's original comprehensive environmental impact assessment system—was implemented to efficiently reduce overall environmental impact throughout the vehicle's lifecycle.

A review of the materials, processing methods and adhesives used for interior parts helped reduce the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, as well as the discomforting odors sometimes resulting from such materials, to levels below those outlined in the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association's "Vehicle Cabin VOC Testing Methods (for Passenger Cars)", which are the industry's voluntary standards.

New Nissan GT-R for the 2012

Nissan is getting ready to present a 2012MY version of its flagship sports model.Even though the Japanese automaker has yet to make it official, the Nissan enthusiasts over at the GTRblog website posted some leaked images along with information on the updated model.

So, what do we have on the 2012 MY GT-R? Well, on the outside, the Japanese sports car receives a restyled front bumper with LED running lights and a new rear diffuser. These changes are said to help drop the GT-R's drag coefficient from 0.272 to 0.268 while also improving rear downforce by 10%.

The car also gets a new set of Rays forged aluminium wheels, which reportedly save a total of 12kg (26.4 lbs), and two new exterior hues (blue and black).

The website added that the 2012MY GT-R will also benefit from some modest interior upgrades.

Jon Sibal, in what appears to be a wheel search for a new Challenger 'chop (can't wait) has some pics of this JDM Nissan Skyline V36, or as we know it here in the States, the Infiniti G37, done-to-to-the-bone by Access Evolution.

Those spider webs inside the tires are Forgiatto GTRs, and they're not getting any love from anybody...except me. They look like they belong on a futuristic sports car, but certainly look nice on the Skyline.

The rest of the body kit comes from Access Evolution's Exclusive Sport collection: badgeless grille (￥68,750 / $805), carbon fiber front lip spoiler (￥99,750 / $1,168), carbon fiber trunk spoiler (￥52,500 / $615), fiber-reinforced plastic trunk spoiler (￥36,750 / $430), and two brake kits. The big kit features 355 mm discs / 4-piston calipers (￥268,000 / $3,139), and the smaller kit has 2-piston calipers and 320 mm discs (￥59,000 / $691).

For me, the whole matte black thing is way past done, resulting in the coolest detail of the whole car being those loud green calipers (very similar to the color highlighting the interior of Techart's Panamera Concept One). Definitely neat.

The CR-X lives on to tell another tale, or at least sort of. The spiritual successor to Honda's much missed small coupe, the gasoline-electric hybrid CR-Z, will be unveiled in near production form at next month's Tokyo Motor Show.

Despite the fact that CR-Z carries a concept moniker, it's obvious that only a few changes will be made to the production model that is scheduled to be launched in Japan in February 2010 and the rest of the world sometime after.

The CR-Z's hybrid powertrain, but recent reports suggest that Honda will ditch the Insight's 1.3-liter petrol engine for a more powerful 1.5-liter unit combined with a more potent electric motor.

Sound quality is a key characteristic of all Jaguars and is one particular aspect that customers relish.

The new XFR has received special attention to deliver the required V8 intake sound character commonly absent on supercharged engines. Intake manifold pressure pulsations are fed into an acoustic filter at the rear of the engine that is tuned to ‘tenor C’, with the output from the filter ducted into the cabin. The filter is controlled by the engine management system which allows the acoustics to enter the cabin only under certain conditions, such as when the engine is accelerating hard, thus maintaining the desired sound quality at all times. It is music to any performance enthusiast’s ears!

Mated to the more powerful supercharged engine is an enhanced version of Jaguar’s acclaimed ZF 6HP28 electronically controlled, six-speed automatic transmission. Additional clutch plates and an upgraded torque converter are added to the XFR model to facilitate the extra power.

Enhancing the enjoyment and thrilling ride offered by the new XFR is fully independent suspension, control arms, coil springs, gas-charged shocks and anti-roll bar up front with a multi-link rear that features coil springs, gas-charged shocks and an anti-roll bar. The new changes to the XFR’s chassis dynamics come from two new advanced technologies, Adaptive Dynamics and Active Differential Control, which gives a more comfortable, and controlled ride when needed or by turning off the system you can let the rear slide when slicing through steep curving roads.

Active Differential Control (ADC) with traction-only functionality and handling functionality is an electronically controlled alternative to the traditional, wholly mechanical differential, offering more subtle control strategies.

ADC can vary its locking torque (and therefore the proportion of torque to each driven wheel) depending on surface conditions and power applied. Its control strategies optimize traction at each wheel, improving acceleration on low-grip surfaces while also enhancing cornering ability. ADC has no adverse effect on either refinement or stability-where the traditional, mechanical differential can compromise stability under hard applications of power, demanding more corrective input from the driver. Whereas a mechanical differential is permanently active, the XFR’s new ADC system is switched off when not required, so unlike the mechanical alternative, it does not risk undesirable understeer, and creates no issues with noise, vibration or harshness (NVH) at low speeds.

The differential is operated by an internal electric motor and ‘ball-and-ramp’ mechanism, and contains a multi-plate clutch, which transmits or ‘vectors’ torque to the wheel with the most grip. The multi-plate clutch assembly is designed to prevent excessive differential slip, but differs fundamentally from a conventional traction control which uses the brakes to counteract slip after it has occurred.

Adaptive Dynamics (AD) is a highly sophisticated active damping system which automatically adjusts suspension damper settings to suit both road conditions and the way in which the car is being driven. By removing the need for compromise between a fixed, softer setting for ride comfort and a fixed, firmer setting for tauter body control and handling, AD allows the balance between rides and handling to be optimized whatever the circumstances. Unlike earlier systems with only a small number of steps in the damper settings, it offers a progressively variable damping strategy between wide extremes, to deliver a comfortable but sporty ride with impressively sharp handling responses to your inputs.

The three primary functions of AD are to control vertical movement, roll rate and pitch rate of the body. It does this by analyzing induced body motions one hundred times a second, and setting each damper to an appropriate level in order to maintain a constant and level body attitude, thereby optimizing control without compromising ride. Also one hundred times a second, it predicts the roll-rate due to steering inputs, and selectively increases damping forces to reduce that roll rate-improving handling feel and driver confidence-as well as analyzing fore and aft pitch rates due to throttle and braking inputs, and again varies damping forces to reduce pitch, further improving comfort and control.

Additionally, AD improves ride by monitoring wheel position five hundred times a second and automatically increases damping rate as the suspension approaches the limits of its travel. Similarly, it controls wheel ‘hop’ by varying damping to move any wheel out of a natural bouncing frequency, again benefitting ride comfort, handling and even grip.

The new XFR also features Handling functionality, which is unique in this class. In conjunction with the DSC Off option and JaguarDrive Control with Dynamic Mode, this supplements all the advantages of Traction Only Functionality with a number of more driver-focused dynamic characteristics. Dynamic Mode modifies the throttle, stability and transmission parameters, and also modifies the AD responses.

The combination of ADC and Dynamic mode with DSX Off allows controllable power-on oversteer, and improves off-throttle stability, allowing quicker, more spirited cornering when you want to take the new XFR to its limits of adhesion. It can also improve stability in situations such as an emergency lane-change maneuver at high speed and, in combination with DSC, reduce the brake interventions which the more enthusiastic driver might see as intrusive.

So working with DSC, the TCS traction control system and ABS braking function, ADC can significantly improve overall vehicle performance, and provide even more precise driving feel. It is amazing how quickly the XFR reacts to my inputs at the wheel and at the throttle when the systems are turned on or off. It is the perfect combination of electronic intervention when wanted and when no wanted to take the XFR to its limits with no electronic intervention. The perfect Jaguar!

Improving handling and response even more is the new ‘fast ratio’ steering rack, and additionally benefits from the further improvement front-to-rear aerodynamic balance offered by a new rear spoiler and deep front bumper. The wider stance, lower chassis height and its low overall aerodynamic drag coefficient of only 0.29 contributes to both low wind noise and inherent high-speed stability. Contributing even more is the already stiff body shell, the stiffest in its class, is a new rear subframe, a trunk cross-brace and a front cross brace.

Quickly and safely slowing the new XFR down from speed are massive 14.9in. front and 13.6in. internally ventilated power brakes. The front discs are clamped with 6-piston calipers while the rear features four-piston calipers. Enhancing braking power and control are standard ABS, Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Force Distribution. The pedal feel is very linear, a solid feel all the way from high speed to stop. These brakes completed the circle of super-high-performance acceleration and handling prowess.

The interior cabin truly matches the sportiness, comfort, and luxury under the skin of the new XFR. It is both modern, individual and uniquely Jaguar and hints at the car’s super-performance. It features a full soft grain leather interior standard including suede on the pillars and headliner. An electric sunroof to let in more air and sunlight when desired, and a new Dark Oak veneer set on the dashboard and door trim. Its new 18X14-way, heated/cooled front adjustable sports seats have newly shaped electrically adjustable squab bolsters for significantly improved lateral support at higher cornering speeds. Each XFR seat, front and rear, has the ‘R’ logo embroidered on it squab and the front seats have leather seat-back map pockets.

The leather-trimmed, heated, power tilting/telescoping, 3-spoke steering wheel feels perfect in your hand and is the right size for quick inputs. It also features its own ‘R’ logo at the bottom. The dashboard introduces a unique, dark mesh aluminum finish, and another discreet ‘R’ badge on the passenger side of the instrument panel. The easy to see instrument cluster’s speedometer and tachometer have the unique sporting signature of red dial pointers and carry the ‘supercharged’ motif. At startup, the ‘R’ logo appears on the Touch-screen as part of the XFR’s ‘driver handshake’ sequence.

The XFR is packed with user-friendly technologies such as full shift-by-wire transmission controlled by the JaguarDrive Selector, plus adaptive cruise control with Automatic Speed Limiter plus a radar-based Blind Spot Monitor warning you when there is another vehicle nearby in a different lane, and a rear parking aid TV camera with a clear view of the area behind the car on the Touch Screen while in reverse. The Touch-screen is now upgraded with on-screen guidance lines that move according to steering wheel angle to indicate the area into which the car will reverse. The Jaguar navigation system now includes turn-by-turn instructions in the message center. An Acoustic Laminated Windscreen is also set in place to help lower outside noise levels.

The XFR also comes with the incredible Bowers & Wilkins 440-watt system with Dolby ProLogic II surround sound and 14 speakers. The Portable Audio Interface allows simple, direct connection of iPod and MP3 players with full control via the Touch-screen or steering wheel-mounted controls. JaguarSense allows touch-sensitive operation for the glovebox release and interior lights-and those lights feature soft, Phosphor Blue interior mood lighting with Halo illumination around the key switch packs to ensure easy and positive night-time operation.

Digital and SIRIUS satellite radio with HD is also standard. Honda officially introduced its all-new HSV-010 GT racing car with which it will compete in the GT500 class of the Japanese 2010 Super GT series. The HSV-010 GT, which will take the place of the racing variant of the NSX, is all that has been left from Honda's V10 powered supercar project that got canned at the end of 2008 due to the recession.

Instead of wasting all the work that went into the development of the Honda / Acura NSX's spiritual replacement, the Japanese firm decided to use the supercar as a base for its Super GT contender.

Although the HSV-010 GT keeps the unfinished production model's front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive layout, Honda's engineers ditched the V10 powerplant in favor of a naturally-aspirated 3.4-liter V8 unit that churns out more than 500-horsepower and over 392Nm or 289 lb-ft of peak torque.

Honda says that the blacked-out racing model tips the scales at a little over 1,100 kg or about 2,425 pounds and features a double wishbone suspension all around, steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters for the transmission and a rack and pinion system with electric power steering.

Honda officially announced that the 2011 CR-Z Hybrid Sportscar will go on sale in America from August, starting from Just 19,200 USD. The Honda CR-Z will be made available in three trim levels, base, EX and EX with Navi, and with a choice between two transmissions, a 6-speed manual and the company's CVT gearbox. The fuel consumption of the Honda CR-Z equipped with the manual gearbox is rated at 31 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway and 34 mpg in the combined cycle. The CVT version of the Honda CR-Z is rated at 35 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the open roads and 37 mpg in the combined cycle.

Upgrading to the CR-Z EX requires $21,510 and adds fog lights, aluminum pedals, Bluetooth connectivity, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an upgraded sound system with a subwoofer. The top-spec EX with navigation trim is $23,310 and, as the name suggests, adds a nav system, with voice recognition, to the EX’s equipment list.

The base model comes standard with AM/FM/CD/USB audio system with six speakers, automatic climate control, power windows and door locks, remote entry, cruise control, and more. Honda has unveiled today the 2011 Honda Accord Sedan and the 2011 Honda Accord Coupe and announced that both models will go on sale at the middle of this August. The 2011 Honda Accord Sedan and Coupe receive significant updates including improved fuel economy, enhanced exterior and interior styling. Accord offers a unique balance of style, performance, efficiency and value specific to each individual model.

Improvements to vehicle aerodynamics, engine friction and transmission gear ratios all contribute to significant fuel economy improvements. The EPA fuel-economy ratings for the 2.4-liter four-cylinder Sedan models equipped with an automatic transmission improve by 2 mpg in the city and 3 mpg on the highway, for a city/highway rating of 23/34 mpg. As for the 3.5-liter V-6, preliminary EPA fuel-economy ratings for the Sedan are 19/30 mpg city/highway mpg, an improvement of 1 mpg in highway driving.

The exterior changes are mostly focused on the front fascias, which now use the design language introduced by the more or less eye-delighting Accord Crosstour. Both versions have received a new front grille and revised bumpers. The cars also comes with redesigned rear bumpers, new lightweight alloy rims, while the sedan’s tail lights have been redesigned.

Interior improvements concern the repositioning of the climate-control buttons on the left side of the control stack, closer to the driver for ease-of-use, with less-frequently used buttons now located on the right side. In addition, all models get new seat fabrics and an updated instrument panel design.

Set to go on sale in mid-August, the 2011 Honda Accord Sedan and Coupe receive significant updates including improved fuel economy, enhanced exterior and interior styling and the addition of a new leather-equipped Special Edition (SE) trim level. Available as either a sedan or a coupe in 4-cylinder and V-6 variations, the Accord offers a unique balance of style, performance, efficiency and value specific to each individual model.

"For 2011, the Accord evolves again with sharpened styling inside and out, fuel economy gains and a broader application of popular features," said Erik Berkman, vice president of Corporate Planning and Logistics for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The Accord is designed to deliver a consistently rewarding ownership experience in the areas that matter most to sedan and coupe drivers."

Improvements to vehicle aerodynamics, engine friction and transmission gear ratios all contribute to fuel economy improvements. The EPA fuel-economy ratings1 for Accord 4-cylinder sedan models equipped with an automatic transmission improve by 2 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 3 mpg on the highway, for a city/highway rating of 23/34 mpg.

The 2011 Accord Sedan's exterior expresses a more upscale and powerful presence with a new style for the front grille, front bumper and rear deck lid, along with a new wheel design.

Building on the sedan's design character, the Accord Coupe's unique muscular stance is enhanced with a bolder front grille design, new front bumper shape, enhanced brakelight appearance and a new wheel design for V-6 models.

Striking a balance between value and luxury, the Accord SE Sedan offers the additional features from the popular Accord LX-P with the added luxury of leather-trimmed seating, heated seats, driver's power-lumbar support and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

New features on certain models include steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe, a USB Audio Interface on all coupe models and Accord EX and EX-L Sedans, and a rear view camera on sedans equipped with the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation2 System™. Additionally, Accord EX-L V-6 models receive a two-position memory system for the driver's seat. Additional interior updates on all models include new seat fabrics on models with cloth seats, an updated instrument panel design and more-refined accent points throughout the interior.

Interior styling on all models provides attainable luxury with generous standard equipment, world-class ergonomics and intuitive vehicle controls. The front seats are designed to provide generous lateral support and to complement the Accord's sporty side. The fold-down, rear seatback offers cargo-carrying versatility and also includes a lockable pass-through for long items like snow skis.

New for 2011, the most frequently used climate-control buttons are now positioned on the left side of the control stack, closer to the driver for ease-of-use, and less-frequently used buttons are now positioned on the right side. Vehicle clock adjustment is also made easier by more prominent control lettering.

A 190-horsepower, 2.4-liter, 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine is standard in the Accord EX and EX-L Sedans and Accord LX-S, EX and EX-L Coupes. The 2.4-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine in the Accord LX, LX-P and SE Sedans produces 177 horsepower.

The available 3.5-liter, 24-valve SOHC i-VTEC® V-6 engine produces 271-horsepower and takes advantage of Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) technology that can deactivate up to half of the cylinders while cruising to improve fuel economy. Preliminary EPA fuel-economy ratings3 for the 2011 Accord V-6 Sedan are 19 city/30 highway mpg, an improvement of 1 mpg in highway driving.

The performance-oriented Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe with the 6-speed manual transmission has a unique 3.5-liter V-6 VTEC engine (without VCM) that provides a performance-tuned valvetrain, intake and exhaust system to broaden the torque curve in the low- to mid-rpm range for enthusiast-level performance.

A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on 4-cylinder models and a 5-speed automatic is available. A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard on V-6-powered models. A 6-speed manual transmission is available exclusively on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe.

For safety, the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE®) is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment.

The double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension inspire confident handling performance while also providing a comfortable ride. The 2011 Accord Sedan comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, or 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels depending on the model.

Three audio systems are available "“ all with MP3/Windows Media® Audio (WMA) playback capability and an auxiliary input jack. The standard system provides a single-disc CD player, six speakers and 160 watts of power. Radio Data System (RDS) displays information broadcast by participating FM radio stations that often includes call letters, station type (searchable by genre) and programming information. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls come standard on every Accord. The Accord EX Sedan and LX-S Coupe add a 6-disc in-dash changer.

A premium 270-watt audio system comes standard on Accord EX Coupe and Accord EX-L Sedan models, and includes a six-disc CD changer and seven speakers including an 8-inch subwoofer. XM Radio® is standard equipment on all Accord EX-L models.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System (available on Accord EX-L) uses an 8-inch screen and an interface dial for user input. Features include the Zagat Survey® guide for restaurants, nightlife, hotels and attractions. While money can’t buy you love, it certainly can buy you a whole lot of fun, and when it comes to the Mini Cabrio, less roof really does mean more woohoo!

The Mini Cooper S Cabrio Chilli, we’ve just tested sits just under the mighty John Cooper Works edition on the Mini Cabrio line-up, and on top of the Cooper, Cooper S and Cooper R52 models.
While it might carry a hefty price tag with our road test model optioned to just shy of $55,000, the amount of enjoyment squeezed in to this impressive little package is absolutely incontrovertible.

In terms of looks the retro styling keeps the spirit of the original Mini alive while not detracting from being a thoroughly modern vehicle, though that said, I prefer the look of this car with the roof folded down.

The cabin too retains that retro 60′s charm while not doing away with all the mod-cons we’ve come to expect from the marque, however the ‘always-open’ metre (a device that times how long the roof has been off so you can calculate your UV exposure) seems to block one of the driver’s vents and the rear seat is best reserved for small children or brief trips by adults.

The oversized centre speedo is best thought over as a novelty as parallax error makes it difficult to accurately determine speed. Fortunately a digital duplicate can be found in the centre of the tachometer.

There’s enough features to keep you entertained including bi-xenon headlamps, front and rear foglamps, parking sensors, climate control, cruise control and trip computer, though our test vehicle was optioned with a bit of extra kit (see options list at top of page).

Sadly the new Cooper S is sans Harmon Kardon audio which is a bit of a shame all things considered. The 10 speaker unit as featured in the current model is otherwise decent of both tone and volume, even with the roof off.

When it comes to the retractable roof there’s a few issues with regard to noise and rattles which I feel are a little sub-standard for the money with no insulation provided in the canvas twin-folding design.

It’s also rather slow to retract at 21.0 seconds (or 24.0 seconds with the engine switched off) and though this isn’t a problem generally speaking, it can catch you out if you’re to attempt the manoeuvre at a short set of lights. Thankfully closing the top sees a full five seconds shaved from that time – great if you’re caught in the rain.

However, it’s driving with the roof off that is the absolute highlight of the ‘S’ variant Cabrio as it allows you to imbibe the subtle crackle and pop of the raspy exhaust while feeling the wind in your hair and the sun on your back while enjoying that trademark sporting prowess the brand has become famous for.

As you might expect from a Mini toting the ‘S’ badge the performance on tap is truly grin inspiring with the force-fed 1.6-litre, four-cylinder producing a cracking 128kW at 5500rpm and 260Nm or torque, on overboost, which is available from a low 1700rpm all the way to 4500.

Zero to 100km/h is dished out in a little over seven seconds, drive out of corners is sharp and snappy, and when it comes to rounding up slow moving traffic, overtaking is brisk and purposeful.

Best still the drive is completely usable thanks to a close ratio gearbox which has a sweet short throw through its six forward ratios and a positive clutch feel not often synonymous with cars of this category.

The well cogged gearbox also manages to provide Mini with exceptionally frugal fuel economy returns with our week totalling 7.8 litres per 100km (combined), just over half a litre more than the ADR claims.

Steering is truly a point and shoot affair with near perfect levels of feel and road feedback on offer. Torque steer can however be a little snappy in certain situations, though I will admit, I did enjoy the optional limited slip differential.

Road holding is simply tremendous and with such a short wheel base, tight suspension and strong braking, the ‘S’ is a hoot through your favourite twisty sections of country road, or even when playing in traffic. That said, there is a little scuttle shake evident over mid-corner lumps and bumps.
Sure all of this wicked fun comes at the price of a comfy ride, but if you’re a the kind of driver who likes a little more enthusiasm from your car’s handling, then I’m sure you’re bound not to care.

While the Cabrio was never really meant to be practical it does offer a 170 litre boot that can be expanded through the rear seats to avail 660 somewhat awkward litres if need be.

Safety come courtesy of pop-up roll-over bars; front and side airbags; switchable ESC with traction control; as well as ABS with CBC, EBA and EBD to see Mini Cabrio achieve a four-star ANCAP rating.

So with summer just around the corner the Mini Cabrio represents a joyously uninhibited way to have some topless fun through the warmer months, and even if the added pep of the Cooper S isn’t your thing, a base model can be yours from just $39,800.

Mini Cooper D – The Frugal Mini

Green motoring has finally become cool.

Model Tested:

The Mini Cooper D is an interesting car, it’s both cool and yet still green, two concepts which so far haven’t gone all that well together despite the best attempts of the world’s largest car companies. Making a car that can go 1000km+ on a single tank, put out very little CO2 emissions and yet still be fun and not embarrassing to be in? Is it even possible? Yes

It takes several hundred kilometers to review a car properly and usually when an evaluation vehicles goes home it has about ¼ tank of fuel left in it. So you can imagine my shock as I was handing the Mini Cooper D test car back to BMW and realised that the fuel tank was still more than half full. That would’ve been more than believable had I not done 496km!

On the whole I am not a big fan of fuel efficient cars, in a way they say a lot about the mentality of the automotive industry today, with manufacturers desperately trying to be environmentally conscious and promoting their green image, meanwhile keeping the passion and performance aspect alive at the same time. There is a lot incongruent with that idea.

Fortunately though, the Mini Cooper D is a little different to the rest, for a start it’s a Mini so it instantly has some cool factor attached to it. Additionally, it’s not powered by some super complicated electric hybrid engine that requires half the planet to get involved in its construction.

Of course, then there is the drive factor, it drives like a proper car, you can push hard into corners and you can drive up a twisty mountain and it won’t complain, it won’t make you feel like you’ve sold your soul just to save a few trees.

Best of all though, it’s not incongruent, it’s not confused, it knows exactly what it is. Mini call it Minimalist design even though the car is relatively well equipped.

I collected the Cooper D from Brisbane BMW in Fortitude Valley and headed into peak hour traffic, BMW had decided that since I’m going to be driving it around for a week, it may as well use the car as an advertising billboard. Two giant stickers each side made sure of that, one side read 3.9L/100km and the other side read 104g co2/km.

I was driving around in a beacon of the green movement in peak hour traffic, hippies waved, men in BMW M3s frowned as they sped past. Alas, I am open minded, so what if it helps save the planet, it can still be cool, it’s a Mini! Plus if you buy one, BMW promises to take the stickers off.

On the first set of lights in the middle of Brisbane CBD, the car turned off. Oh dear, had I stalled the car? Had the car broken down, could this get any more embarrassing? For a good 30 seconds there, I started wondering how I was going to end up on the 6 o’clock traffic helicopter with the tag line reading “Hippy in eco friendly car stops Brisbane traffic”.

I looked down, the car was in neutral, how could it possibly stall? It hadn’t, the Mini is so smart it had decided to turn it self off similar to hybrid cars that turn off their petrol engine when stopped. Perhaps if I had paid more attention to the lady explaining the car’s ins and outs 10 minutes ago the Mini’s start-stop system wouldn’t have come as a surprise.

With the system on, the Cooper D will turn itself off (safely) everytime you’re stopped in traffic, even if its for 10 seconds, when you press the clutch in, it will turn back on instantly. Now if you’ve never experienced a car with Start-Stop technology, it may seem like a gimmick, something that might slow you down, however it’s quite a brilliant system.

The idea is that instead of the engine running while you’re not moving, it simply turns off for the duration of your stop to save fuel. To the outside world, it may seem like you’ve gone mad with the ignition switch (or are incapable of driving) but it’s all very seamless and after a few days you get used to it.

Start-stop aside, there is a lot more to the Mini that makes it fuel efficient, it’s powered by the BMW/Peugeot designed 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine. With 80kW and 240Nm of torque, by no means is the Cooper D a performance car, but nor is it slow. It will go from 0-100km/h in about 10 seconds but somehow BMW have managed to bring fuel usage down to just 3.9L/100km (equal best fuel rating on the market). It does help that the car only weighs 1090kg.

To put that into perspective, the new third generation Toyota Prius with all its ultra-modern technology, electric drives, batteries, hybrid engine and what not can only manage the same fuel rating.

For a car that costs $33,750 you get a lot of underlying technology to go with the good fuel economy. Mini’s famous driving dynamics apart, the Mini Cooper D comes with pretty much the basics, the chilli variant ($37,350) gets a rear spoiler, uprated interior, 16-inch alloys (as oppose to 15), front fog lights and a better stereo system (10 loudspeakers and a digital 8-channel amplifier).

Safety wise you can’t expect anything less than five-star these days and the Cooper doesn’t disappoint. With airbags all around and a five star rating from Euro NCAP Crash Test the Mini also comes with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Automatic Stability Control Traction (ASC T) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).

During the week I drove to the Gold Coast, around town and even used the Mini to move some furniture. If you’re like me and don’t have any kids, it’s hard to argue against the Mini’s practicality.

Of course it wouldn’t be a proper green car if it didn’t have a few gimmicks, for example the Brake Energy Regeneration system helps charge the car’s battery whenever the driver brakes or the car is coasting in traffic.

In the manual variants, there is even “Shift Point Display” that works out what’s the best gear to be in and prompts the driver to shift up or down via arrows in the rev counter.

For the low to mid 30s there are a few other alternatives on the market, Volkswagen, Peugeot, even Fiat make similarly specified cars for around the same or lower price. So the question you have to ask yourself is, and if I may use Toyota’s marketing department genius for a minute, are you a Mini person?

What makes a Mini person? Being a little different, as much as I love the Volkswagen Golf diesel (and it’s a brilliant car), it’s not exactly a unique car and as much as I want to recommend a Fiat to anyone, resale and reliability come to mind with all Italian cars. So for me it comes down to the Peugeot 207 and the Mini Cooper D.

The only minor downside that is worth mentioning is the stereo, it’s just not what I expected from a car of this caliber as it seems to be lacking much needed bass and clarity. However if you go for the Chilli variant that won’t be an issue.

Handling and performance wise, there should really be no need to explain as the 1.6-litre diesel is the fastest 1.6-litre diesel in Australia (0-100km/h) but it also handles rather well despite its tiny 15-inch wheels (16- on chilli). Steering response is typical go-kart like as with all Minis and the pedal position feel makes for an easy drive.

You have to remember the Mini Cooper D can travel 1,025 km from a single 40-litre tank – and that’s no small feat. Yes it’s a little more expensive than its other European rivals, but being cool has a price.

If you’re looking for a car that is green but still keeps its cool factor whilst being extremely fuel efficient, it’s really hard to go past the Mini.

Mini’s top-ranking John Cooper Works models have since their introduction come to represent all that’s right about modified modern motoring.

The JCW recipe takes a brand already synonymous with ten-out-of-ten enjoyment and, thanks to a few simple tweaks, brings the Mini’s competitive performance credentials to the fore.

To an untrained eye the JCW Cabrio may not look any different to its standard sibling, but therein lies its charm, for with under bonnet augmentation pumping the topless tuner’s performance’s credentials a further 27kW and 20Nm northward, you’d want to believe this is one Mini that takes itself pretty seriously.

Inside Mini’s compact cabin the familiar funky retro styling is further enhanced by slick piano black trim highlights and matching door sill finishers. Even the gearknob gains a fiery red shift-diagram in a nod to the car’s bolstered performance credentials.

Front seating is supportive, and surprisingly roomy, though the rear pews are only suitable for the occasional very short trip, stowing the handbag dog, or as additional luggage space to the rather limited 125 litres on offer up back.

The feature list is otherwise generous, as you’d probably expect at this end of the price range, with single-zone climate control air-conditioning, pumping six CD tuner, steering wheel-mounted cruise control, four-in-one power windows, electric mirrors, push-button starter, front and rear foglamps, xenon headlamps, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity and iPod auxiliary audio input.

Mini’s dual-mode canvas roof too is completely automated, but somewhat slow at doing its thing, which is a little annoying when you’re left holding the button for 25 seconds. The roof is also a little on the rattly side and dramatically hinders ‘C’ pillar visibility when locked in place.

But refinement aside, it’s what’s at the heart of any JCW Mini that serves to raise a well plucked eye brow.

In this instance the JCW Cabrio manages an impressive total of 155kW of power – and a whopping 280Nm (overboost) of torque – from its force-fed 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine. Mated to a sweet, short-throw six-speed manual gearbox, acceleration is acutely sharp with 0-100km/h dealt with in under seven seconds, half a second faster than the regular Cooper S Cabrio on which it’s based.

The JCW Cabrio also boasts a top speed some 17km/h greater than the standard ‘S’ while, curiously, also managing better fuel consumption figures – our test model consuming only 7.3L/100km (combined) this week – a full half-litre better than its generic sibling.

Adding to the beefed up powerplant, the JCW Cabrio gains stiffer suspension, brake upgrades (now 316 x 22mm front / 280 x 10mm rear), 17-inch “Cross Spoke Challenge” alloy wheels, subtle John Cooper Works badging front and rear, chrome plated side air inlets (without “S” lettering), as well as a raucous centrally mounted dual 85mm stainless steel exhaust that snarls and crackles playfully as you swap cogs.

It’s terrific fun to drive too, with a wickedly responsive throttle, sharp brakes and super grippy handling that nearly defies the laws of front-wheel drive physics. On the downside however an over zealous right foot will induce torque steer that’s about as subtle as the lyrics in a Cypress Hill song.

With pop-up roll bars, dynamic traction control with EDLC, plus front and side airbags the JCW Cabrio earns a four-star rating from the boys at ANCAP, and with pricing nearly as cheeky as it’s personality, this little Mini scores the same from me.

MINI Cabrio First Steer Review

Remember the original 1969 box office hit “The Italian Job” with British actor Michael Caine, who had to settle for a supporting role alongside a beautiful Lamborghini Miura, two Jaguar E Types and an Aston Martin DB4.

The real stars of the movie were three Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper S’s in red, white and blue, for England of course.

But truth be told, the Mini as it was known then, had already achieved global fame with owners such as, The Beatles (they each owned one), Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks and even Enzo Ferrari, couldn’t resist the super cool image and go-kart like handling, which the Mini delivered in spades.

It was pretty much the same scenario with the 2003 remake of the film, when heavy hitting Hollywood stars, Mark Wahlbeg, Ed Norton and Charlize Theron, joined the set of the heist movie, only to be out gunned by wheelman, Jason Stratham and three seriously modified MINI Coopers, who drove away with the gold.

Its been far too long since I’ve been behind the wheel of a MINI Cooper S, that was back in 2005 when I was lucky enough to get a steer in a ‘one off’ John Cooper Works Chilli edition, loaded with every possible JCW performance option they could squeeze into the car. I didn’t think it was possible to have that much fun on four wheels, and I wasn’t the only one who thought so.

Former champion race driver Warwick Brown (he has a Formula One race to his credit) is not an easy guy to impress, but a quick spin in the passenger seat of this special MINI, and all he could say was “I want one now”.

But it’s not all about performance with this iconic brand; equally it’s about image and lifestyle, when we’re talking open-air motoring – by MINI.

BMW, the saviours and custodians of the MINI brand, has just introduced the Australian motoring press to the new MINI Cabrio in two flavours, the MINI Cooper Cabrio for $39,800 (RRP) and the ‘tuned’ MINI Cooper S Cabrio, at $48,000 (RRP).

While we didn’t get a steer in the stock MINI Cooper Cabrio, with its 88kW and 160Nm, no one complained, as we were greeted with a line up of MINI Cooper S Cabrio’s in a variety of colour-coded combinations.

We went for the Interchange Yellow with a Black Soft top and matching Interchange Yellow interior highlights. Our car also had the ‘must have’ bonnet stripes in black, which along with the bonnet-mounted intake; make this car a worry in anyone’s rear vision mirror.

MINI have gone for the classic soft top look, rather than the popular folding metal roof, which compliments the overall styling of the car, beautifully.

Not that its any less technical though, in fact, its quite a clever system, which takes all of fifteen seconds to open or close and can be done so while moving at up to 30km/h.

We put this feature to the test in rural Victoria yesterday, as we approached a rest stop, it started to rain quite heavily, so I hit the roof switch and we were under cover in no time at all.

With its integrated sliding action, the soft top also doubles as a sliding sunroof, but with little or no noise from the electro hydraulic components.

You can even option what MINI call an Always Open Timer (standard on Chilli models), which as the term suggests, times precisely how long you have the top down during each trip you make in the car.

Open-air motoring is about weathering the elements and enjoying that crisp cool air, so despite the lower than expected temperatures during the test drive, I strongly resisted the temptation to don my jacket, and with good reason.

Our MINI Cooper S Cabrio test car was fitted with the optional heated seats, which could have made a Siberian drive in the dead of winter with the roof down a joy; such was effectiveness of this bottom warming luxury.

And for your hands and torso, this is one of the best HVAC units I have experienced in any car, which made the 250-kilometre trip in short sleeves, entirely comfortable.

The sports seats with the optional Lounge leather in Hot Chocolate are a treat, hugely supportive and anatomically comfortable, even after hours behind the wheel.

You never feel cramped in the MINI Cooper Cabrio either, put that down to the relatively gentle rake of the windscreen, and the fact that is rises high above your hairline and far enough forward, so as never to intrude.

The instrumentation is a modern interpretation of the original Mk1 Mini Cooper, with the oversized centre mounted speedometer, which I found difficult to read at a glance, due to its lack of angle towards the driver, and relied more on the small digital speed read out within the RPM dial, in front of the steering wheel.

The driving position across the MINI line up is brilliant, you sit deep in the car and low to the ground, so its not hard to understand how this car gets its go-kart like handling tag, but frankly, there’s a lot more to it than simply the ergonomics.

The steering for example, is deadly accurate and very quick to respond to the slightest input, making it an enthusiast’s dream on the twisty bits.

The brakes too, offer brilliant stopping power without being overly sensitive to pedal pressure, a common complaint across several different prestige brands these days.
It doesn’t matter how quick you turn into a corner there is no sign of body roll, not even a hint – this car is lean free, and that’s with the roof down!

Couple that, with what I am prepared to say, is the best performing 1.6 litre powertrain in use today and you have a car, which would put a smile on the face of an accountant from a shoe lace factory.
It doesn’t seem to matter what gear ratio you are in, punch the throttle and the MINI Cooper S Cabrio embarks on a high speed mission, utterly devoid of any turbo lag.

We can thank BMW know how for this silk smooth 1,598 cc all alloy power unit, boosted by a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection delivering 128kW at 5,500 and up to 260 Newton-metres between an incredible 1,600 and 5,000 rpm.

Even traveling across some winding and hilly countryside, you can sit back in fifth or sixth gear without the need to ever shift down, due in most part, to the MINI’s unusually wide torque curve.

The MINI Cooper S Cabrio will top out at 222km/h and accelerate from 0-100km/h in a reasonably rapid 7.4 seconds, although it felt quicker than that from behind the wheel.

There’s a relatively modest dose of torque steer when you jump on the right pedal in first gear, but its no cause for alarm and entirely normal behaviour from a front wheel drive car, with this kind of performance.

While the Six Speed manual gearbox and the beautifully tactile shifter is another highlight of the MINI, you can choose the six-speed automatic with Steptronic and steering wheel paddles, but that will cost you a $2,350 premium over the manual box.

It might have go-kart like handling, but the ride quality on board the MINI Cooper S Cabrio has been perfectly calibrated to take full advantage of the brilliant chassis and offers a firm, but never harsh ride.

As small as the MINI might look, there is enough room in the boot with the rear seats in place for a couple of medium size soft bags. But fold the rear seats down and close the roof, and luggage space is optimised to a considerable 660 litres.

Safety for those on board the MINI Cooper Cabrio range is clearly a priority. There’s a single piece rollbar, which extends the width of the car behind the rear seats, but does not impede the driver’s rear view. There’s also a sophisticated rollover sensor, which will activate a host of safety features including frontal and side head/thorax airbags together with the rollbar, which can deploy in 150 milliseconds, when fired.

The new MINI Cabrio also comes loaded with a full suite of active safety systems which include; ABS, EBD, CBC Cornering Brake Control, in addition to DSC Dynamic Stability Control and a great feature called Hill Start Assist, which prevents the car from rolling back when starting off in first gear, on an incline.

Weighing in at just 1230kg, I’m reasonably confident you can expect this high performance MINI Cabrio to achieve the published fuel consumption figure of 7.2l/100km (combined). After 250 kilometres of reasonably serious driving, we had used just one bar out of ten, on the fuel indicator.
Even better, if you choose the normally aspirated MINI Cabrio, using variable valve management based on BMW’s “Valvetronic” technology, which is said to use as little as 6.1 litres/100km.

But if the above fuel consumption numbers don’t measure up to your environmental standards, and you’re more leaf green than British Racing Green, then you might want to hold off for the new MINI Cooper D, which means you will be able to have the best of both worlds.

On sale in Australia in May this year, the “D” will provide buyers with a capability to travel up to 1,025km from a single tank of diesel (40 litres).

Moreover, CO2 emissions will fall to just 104 g/km, while the 1.6-litre turbo diesel powerplant produces a staggering 260Nm during “Overboost”, and will be the fastest accelerating diesel in its capacity class in the country.

“I seriously doubt whether there is any other car on the market priced below fifty thousand dollars, which offers more “cool” and “go” than the new MINI Cooper S Cabrio”.

Fashion Designers Makeover MINI Models for 'Life Ball'

Francisco Costa from Calvin Klein, Diane von Furstenberg and Kenneth Cole will create three special Minis to raffle off at this year's edition of "Life Ball", the biggest HIV/AIDS charity event in Europe that will take place in Vienna on 17th July 2010.

On behalf of Calvin Klein, US fashion house's creative director Francisco Costa will be designing the new Mini Countryman crossover. US fashion designer with Belgian roots Diane von Furstenberg, will artistically enhance the MINI Hatch, while New York's Kenneth Cole apply his style on a Mini Convertible.

This year marks the BMW Group owned automaker's tenth consecutive involvement in the charity event. Previous Life Ball Mini specials have been designed by Missoni (2003), Ferré (2004), Versace (2005), Diesel (2006), Mario Testino (2007), Agent Provocateur (2008) and, last year, The Blonds for Katy Perry.

According to Mini, proceeds from the sale of the special edition models over the years total around €500,000 or about US$620,000.

2011 MINI Hatchback, Clubman and Convertible With Mega Wallpaper

The exception of the newly introduced Countryman crossover, the rest of MINI's lineup that includes the hatchback, Clubman and convertible models has received a subtle facelift with styling updates and new diesel engines for the 2011 model year.

All variants of the MINI sport a new from bumper design engineered to improve pedestrian protection courtesy of larger deformation zones, new light elements in the headlamps, revised side indicators that sit in the redesigned side gill housings, restyled rear bumper and standard LED tail lights on all models. The five new paint colors and fresh alloy wheel designs complete the exterior upgrades.

Inside, there are redesigned controls for the centre console, steering wheel, air conditioning and audio systems, as well as new materials and colors including six new upholstery choices, three new fascia options and two new interior color lines for door and side panels.
New features for the 2011MY include a retractable roller-type luggage compartment cover for the Clubman and updated audio and navigation systems for all models.

Under the hood, there's an all-new 1.6-liter diesel engine that shares the same bore/stroke ratio, all aluminium construction, common rail direct injection and turbocharging tech with variable turbine geometry as BMW's 2.0-liter diesel units. In the MINI, it will be available in two flavors with 90HP (One D) and 112HP (Cooper D).

MINI says that the One D hatch accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 11.4 seconds and achieves a top speed of 185km/h or 115mph, while returning 3.8lt/100km [74.3mph UK or 61.9mpg US] in the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 99 g/km.

The more powerful Cooper D completes the sprint in 9.7 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 198 km/h or 123mph, while returning the same fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures as the One D.

In addition, the MINI Convertible will be available for the first time with this diesel engine.

The refreshed 2011 MINI will go on sale in most markets in September.

Classic MINI gets a 78-liter V18 Diesel Engine with 12 Turbochargers and 3,500HP

This week's Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, make sure you stop by Cummins' stand to check out this one-of-a-kind Austin Mini with a unique engine-swap. In case you didn't notice, there's a colossal engine sitting just behind the passenger compartment on the classic Mini's stretched platform.

Cummins, an independent maker of diesel engines, fitted its biggest powerplant on one of the smallest cars around. The QSK78 diesel engine, which is used to power mining industry dump trucks capable of carrying 360 tonnes, is a 78-liter, 18-cylinder monster with 12 turbochargers producing 3,500HP (take that Veyron) at 1,900 rpm and 10,157 lb-ft / 13,771Nm of peak torque at 1,500 rpm.
Weighing in at over 11 tonnes (24,912 lbs), the V18 unit measures an astonishing 3,327mm (131-in.) in length, 1,633mm (65.5-in.) in width and 2,429mm (95.6-in) in height.

"We never like to let a challenge go by unanswered so we got to thinking maybe we could fit the QSK78 into an original Austin Mini," said Steve Nendick, Cummins' Communications Director. " It proved to be a bit tricky to fit under the bonnet but our engineers came up with a more creative solution. We're certain that the Goodwood crowd will have difficulty believing what they are seeing", he added.

No word from Cummins on whether or not the V18 diesel actually motivates the Mini, but we wouldn't bet on it.
