The Crazy Horse Memorial

South Dakota is home to quite a wacky monument- the Crazy Horse Memorial. Carved in rock of the Black Hills, the sculpture depicts Crazy Horse, an Oglala Lakota warrior on a horse. The carving, begun by Korczak Ziolkowski in 1948, was never completed due to the sculptor's death in 1982. Today, the complex is owned by a foundation run by Ziolkowski's wife and their ten children. When finished, it is to be the largest carving in the world, 641 feet wide and 563 feet high.

It was opened to traffic in December 2004.

This impressively long highway bridge was opened in May 2008. Thanks to the bridge's opening, the highway travel distance between Shanghai and Ningbo was reduced from 4 to 2.5 hours.

From May 1 to October 31, the city of Shanghai will be transformed into a giant international venue with 192 participants and 50 organizations (a record number in the history of Expo) taking part in the event. With 400 billion yuan (58.6 billion US dollars) being spent on the exhibition preparations, the Shanghai-based Expo is the largest and most impressive fair in the world. From among hundreds of exhibitors, we have selected ten national pavilions that have made the biggest impression on us.

10. Ukraine

Bright colors and striking symbols on the facade of the Ukrainian pavilion are truly eye-catching. Red, white and black decorations are symbols originating from ancient cultures of local tribes that existed in the country. By the way of example, the sun is a symbol for endless power, whirlpool-snake patterns symbolize the passing of time, and the image of dog stands for driving away evil forces. Moreover, the Ukrainians had a great idea to create a map of the world in embroidery, which is a traditional decorative art of Ukraine. The visitors can complete the rest of the map by adding their own stitches to it.

We like Columbia's pavilion for its simplicity. The perfectly proportional geometric form of the building is composed of wooden panels and butterfly decorations which give the pavilion an exotic appearance. Inside, the complex houses "the Pacific," "the Caribbean, "the Andes," "the Orinoco River," and "the Amazon" sections, which present different ambiences of the country, from the oceanic atmosphere and the tropical white sand beaches of the Caribbean to splendid Andean landscapes and coffee plantations.

Among Expo 2010 pavilions, the Russian complex caught our attention thanks to its interesting architectural concept and stenography. The pavilion comprises 12 white and gold 20-meter high towers that form a circle. The color of the towers resembles the historical architecture of Russia and the upper perforations are based on the ethnic ornaments of various nations inhabiting the country. In general, the whole idea of the pavilion was to create a space that would symbolize an ideal, almost fairyland city.

7. Canada

We love Canada's pavilion for its unique design and green approach. The walls of the complex are composed of 4,000 sq m of Canadian red cedar, which give it excellent ecological look. The wooden boards are individually fastened to a frame and can be easily dismantled and reused for other projects after the Expo. Moreover, the pavilion's external walls are evergreen seedlings that operate as a natural bio air filter and collect rainwater for use inside the complex. Such green walls can be found in cities across Canada including Montréal and Vancouver.

The Swiss pavilion's unique and innovative design aims to combine town and countryside, proving that the two can coexist in a perfect balance. The complex is composed of a green roof and two cylinders located inside the pavilion. Inside the building there is an area representing the urban site of the country with its noise, activity and constant movement, corresponds to the Chinese "yin". In turn, "yang" is represented by the open, bright and peaceful landscape of the planted roof. Switzerland, considered one of the world's most eco-friendly countries (with the highest standards of living in the cities), proves that harmonious interaction between urban and rural areas is possible. The red round dots surrounding the façade contain an energy source, an accumulator and an LED cell energy-consumer. The energy is produced by visitors walking under the aluminum curtain and becomes visible in the form of white flashes.

The pavilion put up by Poland is a fine example of reinterpretation of a traditional Polish folk motif. The folk-art paper cut-out transformed into an architectural form makes the complex a striking structure. The pavilion looks attractive both in the daylight, when the sun rays shine through the cut-outs, and at night, when multicolored light is seeping through the patterns. The ramp that is created by the folded exterior allows visitors to walk onto the roof of the complex, making the entire building a unique exhibition space.

The Danish pavilion is splendid. The white spiral form of the complex reflects Denmark's passion for simple and beautiful design that is present in every aspect of the country - from amazingly planned cities to iconic Danish interior design accessories. The outdoor and indoor orbits of the pavilion allow the visitors to experience real Denmark, both on foot and by bike. The complex has a cycle park on the roof, with 300 free bikes offering the visitors a chance to feel as if they were in the country, where, virtually, everyone bikes everywhere. In the pavilion's centrepiece, there is a pool with the famed Little Mermaid statue specially imported for the Expo from Copenhagen.

Among one of the most striking Expo constructions is the South Korean pavilion that emerged on a large 6,000 m square lot, next to Japanese and Chinese sites. The design of the pavilion is an amalgamation of signs and space - the whole construction is a combination of 20 basic letters of han-geul, the Korean alphabet. The external surface is covered with two types of panels depicting the Korean letters (white tiles) and art pixels (colorful tiles), designed by Ik-Joong Kang, a renowned Korean artist. No wonder the Korean pavilion has been attracting long queues since the opening day.

Made of 8,000 wicker panels that come in three different colors, the Spanish pavilion is to resemble tiger's coat as the Chinese Year of Tiger arrived on February 4, 2010. In addition, the production of all kinds of wicker goods is a traditional craft of both Spain and China. Therefore, the pavilion aims to underline the things the two countries have in common. This amazing construction houses three exhibition halls and is home to one of this Expo's most striking structures - the giant Miguelin, a 6.5 meter tall electronically animated baby that breathes and blinks. Apparently, the baby also has dreams, which are to be animated for all visitors to see.

The UK's pavilion is truly a masterpiece and without a doubt the most original construction of this year's Expo. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the UK's leading creative talent, the striking construction is a six storey high object created from 60,000 7.7 m long transparent rods. During the day, the rods, acting like fibre-optic filaments, illuminate the interior, whereas at night, the whole structure glows brilliantly. Inside, the roof-less space amazes with its openness and lightness.
The exhibitions inside the pavilion were created by Troika, a renowned art and design practice from London. They illustrate the UK's past, presence and the country's vision for the future regarding the city life.

As you drive the road over to Venice Italy a whole new world opens up.

No cars are allowed in the city and the fastest way to go between places has to be by boat on the canals that are obviously the blood veins of Venice. No wonder it is often called "City of Canals".
Sun is getting low and I try and make the best of it. Only a couple of hours until the light is gone and all photo opportunity is gone.

Venice is highly targeted to foreign visitors. Numerous shops with traditional theater masks and other more traditional tourist memorabilia.

With almost 300 thousand people living in the City - actually living in all the aging buildings and surrounded by history - it sure sounds like an exotic place.

Venice is a quiet and beautiful city...

...and many of the shops have so amazing displays. I easily feel like stepping back in time or into a movie.

Gondolas are still used - now mostly by romantic couples and other tourists.

Masks of all colors and forms. They are hand painted and in some cases handmade and are traditionally used for the Carnival of Venice but are also a great attraction for visitors. I bought one to take home and I can tell you it is not the easiest object to take on a plane.

San Marco or St. Marks Basilica is the most famous of the churches is Venice. Raised almost 1000 years ago in the magnificent Byzantine style and with decorations in pure gold it is no wonder people come to see it.

The Program: The Program focuses on the influence of environmental factors on the immune system and includes an introductory section covering the basics of the immune system/immune response (innate immunity, adaptive immunity, B cell responses, T cell responses, hypersensitivity reactions). It then discusses how immune responses are modulated by environmental pollutants and the causal links between exposure and immunomodulation, including the corresponding basic molecular mechanisms. In Venice, lectures given by faculty members from the Department of Environmental Sciences at Ca' FoscariUniversity, will cover several environmental issues, including global warming and specific soil and water pollutants. Field trips set up to collect samples (which will be analyzed in the lab by the students) and visit different sites to observe and discuss novel methods for cleaning up pollutants will complete the hands-on environmental aspects of the course.

Oslo, the capital city of Norway, is located at the head of the Oslo Fjord on the Aker River. Covering 175 square miles that consists mostly of farmland, lakes and forests, it is the least densely populated capital city in Europe. The city offers beautiful parks, broad streets, impressive statues and an attractive shoreline harbor. Pleasant, hillside winding streets, dotted with beautiful homes amidst the pines, contrast with the bustling activity of the modern, busy streets that surround the harbor making for a somewhat unique eclectic charm. Modern in design, there is no shortage of excellent shops and dining venues.
What is the weather like?
Summertime (June – August) highs can reach into the 70’s but the average is about 60° and it is often windy.
Where does the ship dock?

The ship docks just minutes from the downtown/harbor area right next to the Akershus Fortress. In fact, you can see the main buildings at eye level from the pool deck of your ship. People joke that it is the only "cruise in" Fortress in the world. Virtually everything is available by walking, taking one of the public trams or water taxis across the harbor.
Where is the shopping?

Oslo offers a very quaint pedestrian shopping street in city centre known as Karl Johans Gate. It goes for blocks and offers every type of store imaginable. Located about 1 mile from the pier, to get to Karl Johan Gate head into the center of the quay, or harbor and take one of the streets inland several blocks until you hit one of the pedestrian streets. Turn to the right and the city will open up before you eyes. It is a great walk and worth the effort. The harbor area also has some very upscale stores in an area named Aker Brygge. Well worth exploring, it begins at the waterfront and goes inland a few blocks. There are also shopping malls scattered throughout the city that are frequented by the locals. Finally, just in case you want to pick up a last minute item, right at the cruise terminal, there is an extensive Norwegian arts and crafts market.
What is there to buy?

I can't think of a product category or label missing from the hundreds of stores found on Karl Johans Gate. Every conceivable product is available. Of special interest are the Norwegian sweaters. Quite reasonably priced, they can be found in every design and color. Norwegian tableware (glass and pewter products) are also widely available. You will find designer clothes, shoes and other upscale boutiques in Aker Brygge. Oh yes, Norwegian trolls are everywhere and make great gifts for folks at home. At the Norwegian arts and crafts market at the cruise terminal you will find furs, sweaters, trolls, coffee cups, t-shirts and every other souvenir you would expect to find in such an environment.
What is there to do?

There is certainly no shortage of options in Oslo. Are you interested in art, architecture, history, music, dance, shopping or sports? Or perhaps you like nothing more than sitting at a sidewalk café and taking in the impressions of the city and its people? Oslo has something for everyone. With over 50 museums, cultural life flourishes. First, you can get right off the ship and investigate the Akershus Fortress and Castle. This walled fortress was built in the 13th century and is a quality representation of what life was like then. Of special interest is the dungeons that were used for who knows what evil? The Norwegian Resistance Museum, also housed in the fortress is well worth the time to explore.

The city is full of statues and sculptures, but by far the most impressive is Vigeland Sculpture Park, located in Frogner Park.

Dedicated to the work of Gustav Vigeland, the park boasts 212 bronze, granite and wrought iron sculptures within the confines of its 79 acres. Depicting the whole cycle of human life from birth to death, the park, in my opinion, is not to be missed.

The public park is free and a favorite of locals as well as tourists. Adjacent to the park is the Vigeland Museum that was at one time the residence and studio of Gustav Vigeland.

The easiest way to visit the park from the harbor is to take one of the westbound trams that stop directly in front of the entrance. When you purchase your tram ticket, be aware that it is a round trip fare and collection is done on the honor system. If you are interested in art, then you may find a visit to the Munch Museum and the National Gallery appealing.

Another option is to take the public ferry from the harbor to Bygdøy.

Some of the most beautiful homes in Oslo are located nestled in amongst the trees and hills of streets that wind through Bygdøy and worth the ferry ride alone.

It is easy to see how folks get through the long winters in this area. The homes are large and beautiful.

The Best of the Viking Ship Museum
Now, high on the list of suggested museums here is the Viking Ship Museum. I strongly suggest you not waste your money to visit. If you are curious, just walk in and climb to the second floor at the entrance, take a couple of pictures and exit. What you see from that vantage point is about all there is.

The Kon Tiki Museum
If you wish to visit any of the ship museums here, I recommend the Kon-Tiki (of Thor Hyerdahl fame) and Fram (Amundsen’s polar ship) Museums as better options.

The Fram Museum
I would also suggest you take some time to explore the Norwegian Folk Museum in Bygdøy. This open air museum provides a collection of exhibits depicting the cultural history of Norway from old farmhouses with sod roofs to examples of daily life enacted by period costumed performers (Think of a Norwegian Williamsburg).

The FRAM Museum
For incredible views of the city and surrounding fjords, you might wish to travel the 6 miles into the suburbs to visit the Hollmenkollen Ski Tower. The facility was built in 1952 for the Winter Olympics and well worth the trip. The Ski Museum is also located there and traces the history of skiing in Norway from early cave paintings of human figures on skis through the polar expeditions of Amundsen.

Of course, no visit to Oslo would be complete without allowing time to stroll the harbor area of Aker Brygge to Karl Johans Gate. On your walking tour, you may wish to include City Hall, the Royal Palace and Olso Cathedral. If you are lucky you will be just in time to watch the changing of the guards at the Palace. And don’t forget time to stop along the way at one of the many coffee bars and cafes. Particularly if you are like me and love to savor the essence of a destination.
If you are not adventurous or just can’t decide what you want to do, there is a city bus tour that was offered right at the exit of the gangway on my last visit and cost a mere $18 US per person.
Is there anything of “Don’t Miss” quality?

Do not pass up a visit to the truly unique 80 acre Vigeland Sculpture Park, coupled with exploring the harbor area and Aker Brygge.
Are there any great restaurants or bars?
There are many good restaurants and coffee bars in Oslo, but I thoroughly enjoyed “Vin Og” along the waterfront on my last visit. (Sit in the covered patio on the second level for the view alone.)

Undoubtedly, Norway can claim the title of the most snow-white country in the world. I see this most easily by going to the Holmenkollen – located on a hill suburb of Oslo. This can be reached by subway or a trip to a reindeer sleigh. It is in Holmenkollen, among the red and yellow houses, the locals gather to drink mulled wine and crunch to traditional Christmas cookies. By the way, along with Santa if you see a festively dressed dwarf – do not be surprised, but rather make a wish. This is a local Santa Claus, whom they call Yulenissen.
