While getting online can be entertaining and fun, it can also lead to major privacy issues. If you aren’t careful, you could be putting your private information into the wrong hands. Because of the risks that come with being online, there are certain steps that you should consider taking to safeguard your information. Here are a few tips for protecting your privacy online.

Watch for Cookies

Cookies are pieces of information that are stored on your computer from websites. Cookies can be pieces of information like logins or passwords, but they could also lead to privacy problems. For example, some cookies are put into place to get information off of your computer or to track what you do. Your Internet browser should have a feature that allows you to be notified every time a cookie wants to be installed on your system. This way, you can look at each individual cookie as it comes up instead of having things inadvertently installed on your computer without your knowledge.

Use Multiple Email Addresses

Another way to help protect your privacy is to use multiple email addresses online. When you spend any amount of time surfing the Internet, you’ll inevitably be required to enter your email address into various forms to get where you want to go. For example, when you want to sign up for a forum or a site, you will have to register with your email. Instead of using the same email address for all of these different purposes, try to keep one address out of all of these registrations. This way, if the places that you sign up for end up sending a bunch of junk and spam to your email, you can simply avoid using that account. You can give your real email address only your personal friends and contacts that you want to interact with.

Utilize Proxy Servers

In some cases, you may want to use a proxy server to access the Internet. With a proxy server, you essentially gain access to the Internet from someone else’s server. This makes it possible for you to get around blocks of certain websites while at work or on another computer. You can also protect your personal information because it’s like your accessing the site from someone else’s computer. Your I.P. address will not be logged as visiting that site and no other identifying information can be secured about you.

Protect Your Computer

When you are concerned with your privacy, you need to focus on protecting your computer at all costs. In many cases, people download viruses, spyware, malware and other programs that can hurt their computers without even knowing it. Once these programs are installed, they can track your movements, steal your passwords, and get other important personal information. These programs can then send it to scam artists who take advantage of your information in some way. If you are worried about your privacy, you should invest in a good anti-virus program to help protect your computer. Otherwise, you could be at the mercy of identity thieves and hackers who have your personal info.

Using your allotted space, you have a tiny window of opportunity to catch the viewer’s eye, and more importantly, overcome their misgivings and entice them to click through. These simple tips will help you win over potential customers and make your advertising dollars more effective.

1. Keep your ad specific

You might be tempted to generalize to reach a broader audience, but you need to accept that you won’t reach everyone with a single ad. If you sell outdoor gear, for example, don’t expect users to click on some vague ad about camping in search of something that might be useful to them. Instead, create individual ads for hot items in your inventory: hiking boots, tents, utility knives, whatever, so that someone interested in buying a utility knife can get right to it. Anything you can do to shorten the distance between clicking your ad and making a purchase is worth the effort.

2. Pay attention to keywords

Because the average consumer is unlikely to give your ad more than a glance, using keywords that spark their interest is more likely to get their attention than elegant prose. Creativity is essential to a good ad, but don’t neglect to include the specific words a potential customer is looking for. Google automatically bolds any words or phrases in your ad that were included in the user’s search–so the more of these keywords you include, the more your ad stands out. It’s the same principle as item 1–don’t make the customer do your job for you. Ads that succeed offer exactly what the customer is looking for, in the clearest language possible.

3. Invite the user to act

This is more than inviting them to “find out” or “learn more” about your product. An effective ad might say, “Book your hotel today for 15% off”, or “Get a free quote in five minutes”. The idea is that nobody wants to “learn more” about hotels or insurance—they want to get a quote, book a room, and get on with their lives. The customer should know exactly what’s in it for them—why they want to click your ad.

4. Be (slightly) different from your competitors

The limitations of specificity and including keywords may limit your creativity a little bit, but strive to make your ad stand out by incorporating a small twist. Ads for most common services stick tight to formula, so when you Google “flash games” you get three or four nearly identical ads, which is great news for the one advertiser who shakes it up—for example, you might offer “quick flash games” or “shooter flash games”. If their ads are vague and yours are specific, you give customers a reason to click, while your competitors’ ads look like background noise.

5. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, and style

A well-written ad isn’t guaranteed to succeed, but a poorly-written one is almost guaranteed to fail. Your ad doesn’t have to be poetry, but nothing raises red flags for a consumer (and Google) quicker than poorly-written copy. Overseas spam farms have trained savvy consumers to immediately associate incorrect English with scams and malware; so unless you want your ad to look like it was written by a deposed Nigerian prince, write carefully.

6. Keep an eye on your analytics

The previous five have been general rules, but your advertising model will have its own quirks that can’t be summed up so neatly. Over time, you can learn everything you need to know just by seeing what works. It’s easy to figure out how much you’re paying for each sale that comes through your ads, so set a threshold (“Each sale shouldn’t cost me more than X amount, or X percent of the sale price), and set a time limit to pull the plug on underperforming ads. When you decide to modify your ad, make only one tweak at a time, so you can isolate which factors are working and which aren’t.

Scientists have found a way to fit x-ray technology in your mobile device. Kenneth O, Ph.D., is the professor of electrical engineering at the University of Texas in Dallas, and his team has been recently working on some material that may allow cell phone camera’s to see through objects.

A new chip put forward by the team of scientists is what they say will enable regular mobile camera’s to become X-ray viewing devices. With this very chip the camera will be able to see through materials like wood, paper, plastic and even the human body. This is now possible due to two main factors; one is the ability to now make use of the previously unused electromagnetic spectrum. The other is greater advances in microchip technology which can now accommodate the terahertz band of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Though this does not mark the first time we have been shown technology that can enable us to see through objects. Last year it was at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory where researchers had devised a microwave based x-ray vision device.

Now such technology that can allow mortals to gain super human strength is gaining attention from a variety of places including the military. Of course all those interested in this technology have their own reason to be. For the military this is part of weapons technology as it allows them to see through steal shields and can be used for their own benefit, where as academically this is much more subtle technology.

Other than its use in security or weaponry and academically this is can be a huge leap forward in the medical arena. CMOS (Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) is the basis for the majority of the electrical devices we see today. When this is put together with the terahertz technology now available, this could result in new devices such as an x-ray machine the size of a mobile. The team at the University of Texas sees this to be a potentially good area to develop in to. However there are limitations to this in terms of privacy concerns. Therefore O and his team, together with other researchers working on the same front have had to limit the depth to which this technology can penetrate.

This means that when using the device the depth or range of the x-ray field would be limited; to be exact it would be limited to 4 inches or 10 centimeters. This could pose some limitations in terms of medical use but it wouldn’t wipe out the possibility of the technologies use in the field completely. Even being able to see 4 inches into a wound or area of the body could be dramatic. Also if we keep in mind Moore’s law this figure could easily reach 10 or 20 inches within the next four years. That would be of substantial use. Though even with the current figure of 4 inches, we can still for example explore parts of the brain which have not yet been looked into.

However privacy concerns still remain at large. As the developers have looked to put a limit on this technology it is not necessary that others will as well. As is the case with most technology, after its release for its initial use, it is hacked and manipulated. Spying on people through solid walls is not far out of reach with this technology.

It takes only a fall of a few feet to ruin an iPad’s digitizer touch screen. Cracked or damaged digitizer screens are a common problem – according to warranty company SquareTrade, ten percent of all iPad users damage their digitizer screens within the first year of purchase! In most cases, while the digitizer screen is damaged, the LCD screen just beneath it is still working fine. So do you need a new iPad? Of course not – all you to do is replace the digitizer screen.

If you find yourself with a broken or damaged digitizer screen, there are three things you can do about it: return your iPad to Apple, send it out to an authorized touch screen repair shop, or you can replace the digitizer screen yourself.

Replacing the Digitizer Screen: Not As Crazy As It Sounds.

Replacing the digitizer yourself isn’t as crazy as it might sound. There are many companies that offer OEM replacement digitizer screens at reasonable prices. And the iPad screen replacement process is fairly straight forward that requires about forty five minutes and a few simple tools to complete.

Those tools are a small Phillips screwdriver, a wedge tool (like a spudger) to pry the two sections of the iPad apart, some kind of blade, such as a razor blade or putty knife, to slice through the adhesive layer that holds the two sections of the iPad together. In addition, you will need some adhesive strips to reattach the two sections after you’ve installed the new digitizer screen.( If you don’t have these tools, usually the companies that sell replacement iPad digitizer screens also sell kits containing the exact tools needed for removing and replacing the digitizer screen. )

Once you’ve received your replacement screen and assembled your tools, you’re ready to proceed. The first thing you need to do is turn off your iPad and remove the battery.

The Hardest Part is Getting the Darned Thing Open

Now comes the hard part – removing the adhesive layer that holds the front and back sections of your iPad together.

The front and back sections of the iPad are sealed together by a special adhesive material that is very hard to cut through. However, this adhesive layer must be removed in order to open your iPad. Be patient and take your time – the adhesive often requires some effort to remove.

Starting at the bottom right corner of the iPad, insert your blade into the seam where the back and front sections meet and then, working from right to left, carefully slice through the adhesive layer, making sure to cut away from you.

Once you’ve completely cut through the right edge of the adhesive layer, use your wedge tool to pry the right side of the front panel from the iPad. Before you continue cutting through the adhesive layer, you’ll first need to disconnect the WiFi antenna; once the WiFi antenna has been disconnected you can continue slicing through the adhesive layer until the two sections are separated. In addition to the WiFi antenna you’ll want to take special care while cutting around the unit’s volume and power controls, home button assembly and front camera housing.

Don’t worry – it gets easier!

You Have to Remove the LCD Screen First.

After you’ve completed cutting through the adhesive layer, carefully lift the digitizer screen out so you can remove the unit’s LCD screen, making sure you don’t damage the flex ribbon cable that connects the digitizer to the iPad. This is the video connector and is crucial to the operation of a touch screen. It will have to be disconnected before you can attach the new screen, but you’ll first have to the LCD screen before doing so.

Using your Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws that keep the LCD screen in place. Using your pry tool, carefully lift the bracket securing the LCD’s two video connectors and disconnect the cables.

With the cables disconnected, you shouldn’t have any trouble removing the LCD screen. Lift the LCD screen out and place it to the side.

Next, using the same pry tool, carefully open the latches that hold the digitizer’s video connector cable in place. With the latches open, you can disconnect the video cable and completely remove the old digitizer screen. Dispose of your old digitizer screen in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

Now you’re ready to install the replacement digitizer screen. It’s basically the same as removing the screen, only in reverse: connect the digitizer’s video cable, making sure you close the latches so the cable is properly secured. Reconnect the LCD’s cables and the put the LCD screen back in its place.

Putting the Pieces Back Together.

For the next step you’ll have to reseal the two sections of the iPad back together. This is what the adhesive strips are for.

It’s very important is to make sure that the two sections are in properly aligned when resealing you iPad. Make sure you’ve removed all the old adhesive material. Cut the new adhesive strips to the necessary size and place the strips along the entire adhesive perimeter of the iPad, making sure that they’re placed in the proper position. You may encounter difficulty getting the home button assembly and camera correctly aligned with the front panel. Again, take your time – the last thing you want to do is have to reopen your iPad!

Now that the two halves of your iPad are back together, set the screen face down on a flat surface and place a weight (not too heavy, of course) on the back section, and allow the adhesive to set over night.

Good As New!

In the morning your iPad should be good as new! What a way to start your day!

Some professionals give out cards with QR codes that can be read by most smart phones. These QR codes link to online business cards or portfolios. Other professionals are relying on business card apps, primarily on the iPhone and Android phones, to take care of their business networking needs. Five of the top business card apps are outlined below.

Cardcloud This app allows users to create as many online business cards as they’d like. This means that users can have one business card for a day job, one for an entrepreneurial venture and another to swap with strictly social contacts. Cardcloud allows users to send a card to individuals who don’t have the app on their phones. This app also stores data about when and where contacts swapped cards, which is particularly handy for on-the-go business professionals who need extra help remembering where they met contacts.

SnapDat This app allows users to quickly share business cards. Users can send their cards to individuals who don’t have SnapDat as an email with a vCard attachment. The app includes an image of the business card when sending a vCard, which many business people consider an added advantage. SnapDat offers a wide variety of designs from which users can choose. Cards can include links to social networking profiles. Users can add a business logo as well. SnapDat also stores the location of a business card exchange, helping users remember where they met each and every new contact.

CardFlick Sleek and beautiful, CardFlick is a great app for the business professional who also has an eye for design. Users create a custom card online, choosing from a variety of backgrounds and font options. Saved cards can be sent to contacts via a variety of social networking sites. Users can also download the CardFlick app for the iPhone and Android phones. Once signed in, users can send business cards to other individuals using the CardFlick app. Cards can also be sent as an email attachment to individuals who do not have the app.

Bump One of the oldest kids on the block, Bump is an incredibly popular business card and contact sharing app that works via a virtual bump of one phone against another. Users store their contact data in an iPhone or Android phone’s address book. When the Bump application is running, the bumping of two phones triggers the exchange of contact information. Users can configure Bump so that it will highlight contacts that both users have in common. One of Bump’s most attractive features is the ability to update contact information without needing to re-bump contacts. Users can elect to have info updates sent to all contacts.

Fliq Designed more for quickly exchanging contact data than for exchanging traditional business cards, Fliq is a great solution for on-the-go business people who simply want to share their phone numbers and email addresses with contacts. Fliq doesn’t feature any fancy business card designs, but does allow users to beam information to one another with the press of a button. Fliq can only be used with others on a shared WiFi network.

The problems with this robust multimedia platform are now more evident than ever in a digital era dominated by smartphones, tablets and other gadgets commonly grouped in the mobile device category. With HTML 5 on the horizon, the days of Flash’s usefulness may literally be numbered.

What HTML 5 Brings to the Table

HTML 5 is the fifth generation of the widely used programming language known as Hyper Text Markup Language. It offers many powerful features, including advanced 3D effects and animations as well as interactive application interfaces for taking web-based interactivity to the next level – all without the need to be implemented via browser plugins. More importantly, HTML 5 is being designed with mobile devices in mind, which is one of the main reasons it has been able to garner the support of Apple, Google and other mobile technology providers.

HTML 4, the current implementation of Hyper Text Markup Language, is still of course serviceable in many regards, but has been tweaked to the point where its foundation is unstable at best. And while applications such as Adobe’s Flash and Microsoft’s Silverlight have certainly been useful, their limitations have shown us that more reliable technology is needed to support the rapid evolution of the digital channel. If internet powerhouses like Apple and Google have their way, it will be HTML 5 that carries us into the future.

HTML 5 vs. Flash

Although some pundits have already crowned HTML 5 as the heir apparent to Flash’s thrown, there is no guarantee that it will replace Adobe’s veteran multimedia technology – at least not completely. Here are three reasons why:

1. Flash is Still Relevant – Regardless of its incompatibility issues with the typical mobile device, Flash is still widely used across the internet landscape. Disney and video streaming service Hulu are two of numerous brands that use it to create interactive experiences for their audiences.

2. Flash is Better For Certain Applications – Flash is a multipurpose technology, but one area it truly excels in is rich media applications. Despite having problems in the mobile arena, it is very efficient at creating interactive experiences through web video, games and advertising. The fact that Flash works so well in so many instances makes it unlikely that developers and brands will drop it any time soon.

3. HTML 5 Has Some Maturing to Do – Even though it appears to have a bright future ahead of it, HTML 5 is still a work in progress at this point. According to the WC3, it will not be ready to take the torch until at least 2014, which for now, is the projected official launch time.

HTML 5 may not be able to replace Flash, but it looks to be more than capable of picking up the slack. It is very possible that one will drive the mobile platform, while the other remains prevalent in the desktop environment.

It is hard to see a website you have put so much time into, and many times either fully or at least partially supports your family, get penalized in the rankings. I would like to talk to you about our recent experience with getting one of these penalties, and what I did to start to turn things around.

Let me first give you a little background to my career. I have been in the SEO industry for just over 4 ½ years. I worked at a large agency for the majority of this time. Just in the last 7 months I switched over to doing in-house corporate SEO for one company. We are an enterprise level solution for survey software. Needless to say, it is a very competitive industry. It just so happens the penalty that was given by Google happened to be an affiliate site to this domain.

When I first got started at this new company, their rankings were horrible. The last webmaster didn’t believe in link building, thus the website didn’t rank for a wide range of important phrases. Just weeks after I got hired, the website started to generate significantly more traffic. Just a few weeks ago, the rankings completely tanked for an important affiliate site. The problem came when we became too dependent on automated link building networks. Build My Rank is definitely the best network I have ever worked with in my career. Rather than looking for links with featured guest posts, link exchanges, infographics, and partnerships we took the easy way out. There is no question this was one of the reasons the website was penalized. However, it wasn’t the main reason. The real kicker came when we tried to use a service called SEOLinkMonster. It was actually partially our fault. Rather than setting up a spun article to be distributed, we just sent out static content. Their service passed this article out to a wide range of sites. Google noticed that all of our recent links had been generated by these questionable link-building services. This triggered an algorithmic penalty to be added to the domain.

It has been 3 weeks since the penalty was placed on the website. It looks like the rankings are starting to come back. Right after we noticed the drop in rankings, I deleted as many of the junk links as possible. I feel this is a reason Google is starting to give us placement back on the first page. The other thing that is important to do is file a reconsideration request in Google Webmaster Tools. This is a platform where you can tell Google exactly what happened. Don’t get your hopes up for a quick response back from the search engine. It usually takes at least 2 weeks to hear anything.

The main thing I want to advise is that you don’t become too dependent on 1 network or form of link building. It takes time and effort, but be sure to obtain links the natural way as much as possible. It is much easier to do quality link building so you never have to deal with a Google penalty.

Making connections with other professionals in your field can generate job leads and help you impress potential employers. The more professional connections you forge, the easier it will be for you to land the job you want. In today’s digital world, one of the most effective ways to connect with other professionals is through LinkedIn.

Why LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a social network designed to foster professional collaboration among users. More than 120 million people are already active on LinkedIn, and approximately 1 million more people join the network each week. With so many people using the platform, you can easily connect with local professionals in your field who may be able to help you find a job or even offer you a position in their own companies. To further increase your chances of finding a desirable position, LinkedIn will also send you email alerts when relevant jobs become available.

Using LinkedIn

To maximize the benefits of this social network, job candidates should use LinkedIn as an online resume. When you complete your profile, make sure that you add information to all sections that are relevant to your career. LinkedIn allows you to include information about your academic record, past work experience, professional recommendations, and career goals. The platform also allows you to add links to external documents, such as a hard copy of your resume.

In addition, LinkedIn recently developed a new profile tool known as “add sections.” This tool allows you to include information about any written works you have published and foreign languages you speak. You can also add information about relevant skills you possess, such as familiarity with certain software programs. Finally, this tool allows you to add sections to your profile that cover your professional certifications and any patents you have earned.

Optimizing Your Profile

To create the most effective LinkedIn profile, you need to make sure that the profile is optimized for the specific job you hope to land. While it is important to include plenty of information on LinkedIn, the information you include should always be relevant to your chosen career. For example, if you want to work in the medical field, including a large amount of information about your past experience as a computer programmer is unnecessary and may actually decrease your chances of finding a job. You should also make sure that your profile can be easily scanned. Profile headings should be direct and concise, and you should leave out over-used buzzwords such as “game changer.” Keep your profile professional, and avoid including personal information that doesn’t add professional value to your resume.

Finding a job in an increasingly competitive job market is anything but easy. By creating valuable professional relationships on platforms like LinkedIn, you can greatly increase your chances of finding a position that is right for you. In addition, because LinkedIn acts as a digital resume, you will be able to reach a much larger number of potential employers than you would have ever been able to contact in person.

What do they do with your information? DO they keep it safe? In order to help you to answer those questions and more, here are ten tips on internet safety and how to keep your private information truly private.

Do I really have to tell you? – No, you don’t. Most web sites do not need everything they ask for. The compulsory items are usually marked with a star, so fill only those spaces out. You don’t have to be afraid to fudge it a bit; they’ll never know the difference and you’ll be safer. Try not to give personal information to web sites that you don’t absolutely have to.

Your DOB- An exclusion to this rule is the year you were born. While you can fudge on the month and day of your birth, many web sites use the year of your birth to allow access to certain services, and they are often required to do this by law. For this object, it is best to go ahead and put in your precise birth year when signing up on a web site.

Secured with an https – Only send sensitive private details to a web site that is secure. The link (URL) to a secure website begins https://. If the web site’s URL does not have that, then it is not a good idea to send them any private information.

Verify before you trust- Authenticate the security certificate used by a ‘secure’ website. It will not do any good to trust a web site’s security if the certificate and system is expired or outdated. Yes, this does happen, even with well-known companies, so check it out. Some web browsers do this for you routinely; read the warning pop ups and steer clear.

Contact is not just for looks – Check that there is a physical address for contact; this may help if there is a disagreement later on. If there isn’t any way to contact the web site manager, then stay away. What business doesn’t want to hear from customers? That’s right, a bad business. Find someone else to do business with.

Sharing is not always a good thing – If there is a website privacy notice verify how the website uses and shares information about you. You know what I’m talking about; that fine print you check off without actually reading. Yes, take a look at the next one you see and look at what you find. You will be shocked with the privacy you are waving off by clicking ‘continue’.

Do you really trust them? – Only share private information with websites you know you can trust. So, you’ve done numbers 3-6 and you feel okay about the site. Contemplate it a little longer before you click okay. Do you trust the site? Is there a Better Business Bureau tag on it? Do your friends and co-workers use it? Are you still willing to go ahead? Then, by all means, continue.

But why do you need to know? – Because I said so is not an effective reason. Always think about who you are giving your private information to and why they would need it. Don’t be afraid to ask. This relates even to web sites you trust. In the real world, why would you want to give your hairstylist your social security number? You trust them with your hair, but not with that. Why would it be any different online?

There are a few you do not mess with – The government. They are a horse of a different color. Do not fudge on their forms, online or off. Make sure that your computer is secure and then start working your way through the red tape. Any time you are on a government website the URL should end with “.gov”. Verify that the site is real before you input any information. And good luck; you’re going to need it.

Do not talk to strangers – When using computer systems that are not your own, never use data or documents that you would not want left behind unprotected. Why? Because some systems record everything you do- from credit card numbers to home addresses. Don’t take the risk. Save important private information for home or wok, wherever you know it is truly safe and secure.

There are always risks involved when you are dealing with delicate private information online. But you can minimize the risk by using simple, common-sense methods to avoid the majority of security leaks. Never use a computer or web site that you do not trust, and always make sure you are on a secure network when you are dealing with sensitive information.

Nothing accomplishes the two-fold goal of effective communication and customer engagement like the medium of video. Any type of business benefits from a more audiovisual approach to web marketing. Not only because video is an attractive way to digest information, but if people are able to connect with your brand through a video, and are more likely to convert to customers, subscribers or donors – depending on your specific organization. A good video can benefit any type of audience. Whether you run an online clothing boutique, or a high-tech cloud service company, there’s no better way to connect with an audience than through video.

Many leading companies have recognized this and harnessed the power of the medium to distinguish themselves from the competition. Rackspace updates the videos on their blog regularly, and Groupon uses their blog as a way to capitalize on the creative energy of their staff producing quirky, often hilarious skits about the goings-on at the company’s Chicago headquarters.

The importance of videos to brands is reflected in Youtube’s recent decision to allow brand channels on the site, designed to be a hub for a company’s visual media.

Elements of a Good Promotional Web Video

o Make Sense of it – If the end of your video leaves audiences left scratching their heads, you probably need to hire a new a web video producer. At the very least, viewers must understand your message, and be able to easily conceptualize what you’re trying to communicate. You don’t want viewers reaching for the back button, or leaving negative comments on your video feed. This requires storytelling skills.

o Tug at the Heartstrings – Every company has a unique story to tell. Whatever that special storytelling element is will also determine the level of audience engagement. In some organizations, like a bicycle delivery service, this element may be obvious. But if you’re working with a server administration firm, this may require a little more creativity. Either way, your audience must connect on an intellectual and emotional level with your product.

o Sharing is Caring – Whether you like it or not, the web is getting more social by the minute, and so must your video content. If your video doesn’t have a Facebook or Twitter share button, you’re almost better off not posting a video at all. Ensuring the “shareability” of your video content is also ensuring wider exposure and web traffic for your organization. In the realm of web video marketing, a share is like a vote for your video. If someone bothers to share your content with his or her immediate social network, you’re doing something right.

o Inspire Action – Since it’s highly likely that you’re not creating a promotional web video for your health, the video must inspire action with your viewers. As with any marketing message, your web video campaign must call the viewer to action. Whether your call to action is a sharing the video, purchasing a product, or signing up for a recurring subscription, your video’s end-goal must be to convert digital strangers into your growing family of regular customers.
