Important Applications of deep learning.

In this blog, we will study some important applications of deep learning. Deep learning has a wide variety of applications and it can be used in a lot of fields.

Deep learning algorithms like conventional neural networks (CNN), recurrent neural networks (RNN) and many more help us in a lot of fields.

If you don't know what a conventional neural network and recurrent neural network mean, then click here to know the basics of deep learning and its types.

Applications of deep learning.

earthquake prediction using deep learning.

a. most affected country by earthquake

automatic music generation using deep learning.

a. Wavenet.

b. LSTM (long short term memory)

colourization of black and white images.

1. Earthquake.

A lot of countries are affected by earthquakes every year. Many people lost their lives due to the earthquake.

How earthquakes are measured.

Earthquakes are measured in magnitude. A Richter scale is used to check the magnitude of earthquakes. This scale was developed by an American seismologist Charles Francis Richter in 1935.

In 1556, Shaanxi, China was struck by the deadliest earthquake in history. It is estimated that around 830,000 people died due to this earthquake. The magnitude of this earthquake is estimated to be 8.

Countries like Japan are most affected by earthquakes due to highly active seismic areas. Every year around 1500 earthquakes strikes Japan.

The worst or deadliest earthquake in Japan was the great kanto which killed around 100,000 people in 1923.

Did you know the largest earthquake ever recorded in human history? The largest earthquake of magnitude ever recorded was 9.5 in 1960 in Valdivia, Chile.

Can earthquakes be predicted?

What if we can predict the earthquakes? Can we predict the exact date, time and magnitude of an earthquake? If we can predict the earthquake it will save a lot of lives.

Yes, it is possible to predict the earthquake using deep learning methods, scientists require huge amounts of data for predicting the earthquake using deep learning.

A lot of factors are considered while predicting the earthquake like the changes in ground water level, changes in cloud, changes in electromagnetic emissions and many more.

Although, deep learning is not fully developed to predict the exact date, time and magnitude of an earthquake.

2. Automatic music generation using deep learning.

I guess a lot of people love listening to music everyday. Music improves focus while doing work and it improves mood, Music is related to emotions.

Maybe a lot of people dreamt of becoming a musician or a composer but due to some issues or lack of skills they have given up on their dreams.

But, in the future it is possible to be a musician by using deep learning techniques.

Automatic music or audio can be generated by using two methods. First one is wave net and the other one is LSTM ( long short term memory).

Wavenet.

Automatic raw audio can be generated by wavenet. It is a type of deep neural network which is used for generating music.

Wavenet is able to generate realistic human voice, for doing this it needs to be trained with the recordings of real human speech.

Example : if Wavenet is trained with a musician's voice, it is able to generate similar types of music or audio

LSTM

LSTM full form is long short term memory. It is one type of recurrent neural network (RNN). LSTM is used for a wide variety of applications such as such recognition, handwriting or text recognition and many more.

3. colourization of black and white images.

Three colourization of image was first started by lumiere brothers named as auguste Marie Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean, lumiere brothers invented lumiere autochrome in 1907, the lumiere autoChrome is used for photographic color process.

More, what about adding colours to old black and white images, normally in the past it was done by human effort. But, now adding colors to image or colourization of image is done by deep learning, which colors images similar to humans.

Conventional neural network (CNN) is trained for colourization of images. CNN is also used for colourization of black and white images.

Summary

In this blog, we have studied some important applications of deep learning and how deep learning algorithms are used in all of the applications.

We obtained some information about the earthquake and use of the Richter scale.

Next, we have studied how Wavenet and LSTM is used for automatic music generation and the last one is colorization of black and white images using deep learning.

The first speech recognition system was designed by Bell laboratories in 1952, this speech recognition system was focused on numbers not on words.

Ten years later, shoebox was introduced by the international business machines corporation (IBM).

b. What is mean by speech recognition

It is a process in which a computer identifies the sound produced by human speech.

Examples : Microsoft's cortana, Google assistant, Amazon's alexa, apple's Siri and many more.

c. Facts.

siri was introduced in the year 2010 by Apple.
Microsoft Cortana was introduced in December 2015.
Amazon alexa was introduced in November 2014.

The human voice vocal folds or vocal cords are capable of producing different vibratory patterns that's why machine learning algorithms recognise the patterns.

Although, recognising the human voice is not an easy task every human has a different type of voice and the way of talking is different.

Everyone has a different style of talking. Some people used to talk slowly, some people talk fast, so it's a difficult task for machine learning algorithms.

2. Machine learning in insurance.

How does machine learning is used in insurance?. Nowadays a lot of insurance companies are using machine learning.

First use of machine learning in insurance is AI assistant/chat bots which provide the guidance for business protocols to internal agents if they have any problem.

Now, no need to call the insurance customer care for any solution because chatbots help you to find the solution very easily. If you have any inquiries you can directly chat with chatbots.

Machine learning algorithms help to claim insurance for car accidents in real time.

These machine learning algorithms were trained to identify the amount damage has been done to the insurance client car depending on the amount of damage the customer can claim the insurance in real time.

They just need a smartphone to capture the image of a car accident and in real time they can get an amount of damaged vehicles.

Machine learning reduces a lot of the workload of the management as well as clients, because clients can claim the insurance in no time.

3. Machine learning in telecommunication.

How does machine learning is used in telecommunication? Why is machine learning used in telecommunication?. You will get all these answers right here.

Like insurance companies, telecommunication companies are also using chatbots to help their customers.

In the past, if you had any problem you needed to call the customer care, you needed to wait in the queue for around 10 minutes and after waiting for a long time sometimes the call connected and sometimes it didn't and even after the call connected sometimes you will not get the answer you need.

It's the most frustrating thing and this frustration leads to changing the operator. A lot of telecom operators faced the same issue, they were not able to satisfy the customer needs. So, that's why now they started adopting chat bots.

These chatbots are available 24/7, so they can help anytime. Now, no need to wait in the queue for a long time. You can easily get the solution you need within a minute.

Chatbots are reducing a lot of workload for the management and it is also helpful for customers.

4. Machine learning in traffic prediction.

How does machine learning is used in traffic prediction? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 1.35 million people die every year in road traffic accidents and 3700 people everyday lose their lives due to heavy traffic.

Most of the time 5-29 age group people are involved in these road accidents, because some children's go to their schools and adults go to their office.

All these accidents happen because of human errors, because many people drive when they are drunk and some of them use their mobile phone while driving and a lot of people love listening to podcasts while driving.

All these distractions lead to accidents. Here, machine learning helps to avoid some of the accidents.

Global positioning system (GPS) is a satellite based navigation which helps to determine the location and velocity. This GPS system works 24/7. There are many algorithms which are used for tackling the GPS data.

5. Machine learning in E-mail spam.

At present email is one of the important tools for communication, you will get all the information to your mailbox whether it's about business, education and even if you purchase any product on e-commerce and many more.

That's why detecting email spam is one of the important and necessary things. Email spam can be detected by supervised learning.

Supervised learning uses classification systems for prediction of email spam.

1. History of deep learning

a. McCulloch and pitts

It all started back in 1943, when An American neuro physiologist Warren McCulloch and logician walter pitts created a computer model based on human brain neural networks.

A classical paper by Warren McCulloch and Walter pitts "A logical calculus of ideas immanent in nervous activity" played a very important role in the process of deep learning because it helped in the development of brain theory.

b. Frank Rosenblatt.

Frank Rosenblatt was an American psychologist and researcher at Cornell aeronautical laboratory. He is known for Perceptron. Perceptron was invented by Frank Rosenblatt.

2. What is meant by Perceptron? and function of Perceptron.

Perceptron is an algorithm designed to recognise the pattern. It gives ability to the machine for recognising the patterns.

3. Basics

Before studying deep learning, we need to understand some basics, these basic terms will help us to know more about deep learning.

neurons.
neural network (biological)
artificial neural network.

A. Neuron.

Brain neuron

Neuron is an individual or basic working unit of the brain, it is a specialised cell whose primary function is to transmit the information through electrical and chemical signals. Neurons are also called nerve cells.

Neurons are found in the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system (PNS). On an average humans have around 86 billion neurons and An elephant have around 257 billion neurons.

B. Neural network.

Biological neural network

Neural network is interconnection of neurons means one neuron is connected to another.

A biological neural network is made up of biological Neurons.

C. Artificial neural network (ANN).

Artificial neural networks are decorated the same as human or biological Neurons. Artificial neural networks require both hardware and software for working.

Artificial neural networks are made up of artificial neurons, which function to mimic the human brain.

4. What is meant by deep learning.

Deep learning deals with artificial neural network algorithms which are inspired by the structure and function of the human brain. Deep learning is based upon artificial neural networks (ANN).

Types of deep learning.

conventional neural network.
recurrent neural network.

A. Conventional neural network.

Conventional neural network is designed for recognising the image or pattern. CNN algorithms are used for pattern recognition. CNN algorithms need to be trained before recognising the pattern.

Conventional neural network is also known as shift invariant or space invariant.

Example : if the CNN algorithms were trained to recognise two breed dogs like German Shepherd and Labrador retriever and if you want CNN to recognise a bulldog, it will try to recognise it depending on the shape and edge of an object and bull dog is also a dog breed, so sometimes CNN will recognise it.

But, if you want a conventional neural network to recognise a cat it will not recognise it because it is only trained to recognise dog images.

CNN algorithms need some input data or training before recognising an image.

B. Recurrent neural network (RNN).

Recurrent neural network is designed for predicting the sequence. RNN works with sequence prediction problems. It's function is to predict the upcoming value in a sequence.

Example : A, B, C, D, E the next in the sequence is F. Although it is just an example recurrent neural network is designed for predicting big data or big values in a sequence.

Summary.

In this blog, we have learnt the history of deep learning like when it started? By whom it started?. We have studied what is meant by neurons, neural networks and artificial neural networks. We also learnt the meaning and types of deep learning.

Google photos

I guess a lot of people use Google photos to store their photos in the cloud. Do you know how Google photos actually work?, and the technology which is used in Google? Yes, you guessed it correctly the technology which is used in Google photos is machine learning, but what is use of machine learning in Google photos.

Don't worry I will explain you the use of machine learning in Google photos.

Nowadays a lot of people are selfie freaks, we capture every moments in our life whether it may be vacation, party, holiday's and even our delicious food.

we capture everything just to upload it in social media. We try around 20 times just to get that one best photo which we can upload it on social media. So, now after capturing 20 similar photos you're confused to choose which one best to upload on social media.

Well no need to worry because machine learning will suggest you the best pic or photo.

Suggestion for duplicate photos.

How many people love to take selfies or photos when we are on a vacation I guess everyone, we just don't want to miss any moment from our trip, again we capture similar moments around 20 times.

Above I explained you suggestions for best photo, imagine now you uploaded 1 uploaded one photo on social media from your 20 photos but what about those similar photos, which are just filling your storage, so here also machine learning will suggest you for deleting the duplicate photos.

Now, you can easily delete a duplicate photo. While capturing tons of photos some of them will be blurry, so machine learning will suggest you for deleting a photo which is not good or blurry.

2. Google rankBrain.

If you want any information about something, what will you do? Whether you want to know about a particular subject or it may be about a person or weather forecast for your location, do you ask any of your friends or cousin?.

I don't think you will because now-a-days almost everyone will search on Google, but how exactly Google works? How Google will show you the most related results?.

Don't worry, you will find answers for all these questions in this blog.

Google confirmed use of machine learning based search engine algorithms for rank brain in the year 2015 (October).

I will give you an example of how Google's rank brain will provide you the most related results. (You don't like to go outside to purchase products, so you prefer to purchase them online, and every time you purchase all the products on Amazon, and one day you are curious to know who is the founder of Amazon and what will you do know, you will search on Google and you will get the most related result like founder of Amazon (Jeff Bezos) you will get the answer).

This is how exactly machine learning algorithms will provide you the best results.

3. Google translation tool.

Not able to read a text which is in English. Now, you're searching for someone who can translate the text to a language which you can understand. In the present, you don't need to find someone for translation, because Google's translation tool will do that for you.

Google translation tool will translate the text from one language (e.g. English) to another language (e.g. Hindi).

This Google translation tool uses machine learning algorithms. Even if you are not able to read this blog which is in English you can translate this to a language which you can understand.

4. Google assistant.

The voice enabled Google assistant introduced by Google in the year 2016 in California.

If you have an Android smartphone you already know what Google assistant is, The voice enabled assistant controls your devices in your smart home. It will give you a reminder of you have any tasks or meetings. It will also read the notifications for you.

Summary

Machine learning advantages and disadvantages.

Machine learning has a lot of advantages as well as disadvantages, every system has some pros (advantages) and cons (disadvantages). So let's discuss some of them.

Machine learning pros and cons.

Machine learning has a very bright future, nowadays a lot of young aspirants want to know what machine learning is?. Machine learning at its peak that's, why machine learning engineers have a lot of or high demand in the market.

The future is all about machine learning and artificial intelligence. So let's discuss some advantages and disadvantages of machine learning.

Machine learning basics for beginners

Table of contents.

Advantages of machine learning.

Consistent improvement
Versatile
Automation
Pattern recognition

2. Disadvantages of machine learning.

Time requirement
Data acquisition
Algorithms selection
Evolution

Advantages of machine learning.

Four advantages of machine learning

1. improves consistently.

Machine learning algorithms will improve when they gain some experience by using their previous input data. It's a self learning technique, when the algorithms acquire some experience they will improve consistently with great accuracy.

2. variety of applications (versatile).

Machine learning is used in a lot of fields. It has a wide variety of uses, without knowing we use machine learning in our everyday life digital voice assistants such as Google's assistant, Amazon's alexa and Apple's Siri. The social media services such as friends suggestion in Facebook.

3. automation.

One of the best advantages of machine learning is automation, because machine learning algorithms can work automatically without any human interruption.

machine learning reduces the workload of the management as well as employees because of its automation.

4. Recognition of patterns is easy.

machine learning algorithms recognise the patterns with ease. The recognition of patterns is also important for humans.

Take the example of Jeff Bezos how he became the richest person? How he earned more than 100 billion?Because of early decisions his ability to see the pattern whether it's about e-commerce, market, customer needs and future technology because of all this things his net worth is improving consistently.

Now, how does a machine learning algorithm recognise patterns? It is a process in which we need to train the algorithms or models to recognise the pattern. (E.g determining spam and non-spam emails.).

Pattern recognition includes the applications of image or video analysis, signal processing, statical data analysis and computer graphics.

Disadvantages of machine learning.

As above we has seen some advantages of machine learning. Every model or system have some pros and cons. Now, we will discuss some of its disadvantages.

1. requires time.

machine learning algorithms need time to gain experience because these algorithms will get better when they obtain some experience. But, to gain the experience the machine learning algorithms requires some time.

The algorithms of machine learning is time consuming, as they will not learn everything when programmed, they will learn when they acquire some experience.

It is also an advantage of improving consistently through experiences, but to obtain the experience we need to wait until the algorithms become experienced.

2. data acquisition.

Machine learning requires a huge amount of data for the process of learning as well as training, also the machine learning process needs good quality of data, because good quality data helps to accomplish the given task more accurately and efficiently.

3. selection of algorithms.

The selection of algorithms in machine learning is disadvantage. The algorithm selection in machine learning process is a physical or manual job, because there are many types of algorithms in machine learning, so trying different types of algorithms in machine learning is a difficult task.

4. evolution.

Although the term machine learning popularized in 1959 by Arthur Samuel, it is still not fully developed (2020).

The development of machine learning is still slow, although it's been 60 years since the term machine learning is popularized but it is still considered as a new technology.

Technology does not automatically improve a lot of people need to work hard to improve it.

Summary

In this blog we took a lot of information about advantages and disadvantages of machine learning. We can get a bunch of advantages from machine learning if we know the correct use of machine learning algorithms.

Because using any technology we need to be aware of its pros and cons. The above mentioned advantages and disadvantages of machine learning will help the reader to know more about machine learning.

Machine learning basic concept for beginners.

In this blog, we will study some basics of machine learning, even if you are a beginner don't worry you will understand all the basics in this blog.

Machine learning basics.

History of machine learning.
Meaning of machine learning.
Definition of machine learning.
Basic methods of machine learning.

Supervised learning.
Unsupervised learning.
Reinforcement learning.

History of machine learning.

The term machine learning popularized by an American computer scientist Arthur Samuel in 1959. He was a pioneer of machine learning. He was born in 1901 in emporia, Kansas. He was best known for checkers (GAME) playing program.

Arthur Lee Samuel believed that teaching computers to play games like checkers is very developing tactics appropriate to general problems.

In 1949 he moved to international business machines corporation (IBM).

He developed the checkers playing programs just for attraction because at that time he did not have money for his ongoing project ILLIAC (Illinois Automatic Computer). This project had a goal of developing supercomputers.

. The meaning of machine learning.

Meaning of machine learning.

Before understanding what is meant by machine learning, we need to understand what, is the term learning means, learning is a process of understanding, gaining or obtaining new knowledge, developing new skills, improving or understanding the behaviours.

Learning is an aspect of cognition, and cognition is a mental process of obtaining knowledge, understanding the thoughts, understanding how we think.

We as a human learn through our previous experiences.

Now the same process applies to machine learning, the machine or a system learns the same as humans. According to Josh Kaufman every human needs 20 hours to learn any new skill and requires 10,000 hours to master a skill.

. The definition of machine learning.

Machine learning is a field or application of artificial intelligence.

To know about artificial intelligence click here.

The system learns things automatically and improvs through its own previous or self - experience.

The three basic methods of machine learning.

1) supervised learning.

2) unsupervised learning.

3) reinforcement learning.

1) supervised learning.

In simple words, supervised learning is a technique in which we need to train a system or algorithms to accomplish or to complete a task. In supervised learning, We need to put the input in a system to get the required output.

Example: exit polls in elections. We take feedback or data from all age groups of people (young, old). This data or feedback is input know by using this input data We predict the output.

Supervised learning has two types.

A) linear regression supervised.

B) classification supervised.

A) linear regression.

Linear regression is an algorithm of machine learning which can predict the dependent variable (y) using a given independent variable (x). In linear regression, if we put two input values in a system we will get two output values.

B) classification regression.

It is another type of supervised learning. In linear regression we need to put the exact amount of input values to get the exact amount of outputs.

But, classification regression is quite different here if we put two independent variables or two input values we will get more than two outputs, because here it can predict more outcomes by observing by using his previous input values.

2) unsupervised learning.

Unsupervised learning is a self - learning process. Here the system learns through experience using the previous input data.

Example : a new born baby will don't know anything but the baby will learn the things growing day by day, by using his previous day experience.

Types of unsupervised learning.

clustering.
association.

clustering.

In clustering the data will be divided into groups based on the similarities. It is a process of arranging it organising the objects based on the similarities.

Types of clustering.

four types of clustering algorithms are:

a) exclusive.

b) hierarchical.

c) overlapping.

d) probabilistic.

association.

It is an unsupervised learning method that attempts to find the connection between different types of entities.

3) reinforcement learning.

It is the process of training a model to make decisions. In this method we need to train the algorithms using reward and penalty or punishment. The goal is to reach maximum rewards.

In reinforcement learning the algorithms will avoid punishment, so if it gets rewards it will learn and repeat the process to get more rewards, but if it's penalized, it will not repeat those mistakes again.

like humans, we don't want to repeat the same mistakes where we failed to gain the rewards, to earn rewards we will not repeat those mistakes again and again.

Types of reinforcement learning.

a. postive reinforcement.

b. negative reinforcement.

c. positive punishment .

d. negative punishment.

a. Positive reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is an incorporation of reward to a desired behavior. The reward system will improve the behavior to do something good or the reward system will make the behavior to occur again.

Example

A treat to a child for completing this homework. This reward (treat) will make the child complete his homework.

b. Negative reinforcement

In positive reinforcement we saw an addition of reward for improving a desired behavior. Negative reinforcement is opposite to positive reinforcement.

Negative reinforcement is removing or avoiding a behavior for the best outcome.

Example

Spanking a child to wash his hands before eating.

c. Positive punishment

positive punishment is something that reduces undesired behavior. This punishment helps to overcome the undesired or unwanted behavior.

Example

Embarrassing a student in front of the whole class for his low marks in a subject will make him get good marks in the next attempt.

d. Negative punishment

Negative punishment is similar to positive punishment. Negative punishment is seizing or removing a favourite item from a person or list.

Example

Seizing a mobile phone from a child or kid because he is not completing his Homework.

Summary

In this blog, we have studied the basics of machine learning, the meaning of machine learning. Now, we know when the term machine learning is popularized, we also know the history of machine learning. We have learnt the three basic types of machine learning.
