With those three good reasons he was already considered of the Internet's most famous hypes.

In August, 2009 he released his newest book: "Free: The Future of a Radical Price". In the book he is the advocate for the idea that, in this century, the drastic reduction in production's marginal costs has made the market logic to lose its basic premise, once based on scarcity, migrating to a new premise, this one based on abundance.

The example used the most on the book is the giant Google, that offers a gazillion free services (and top-notch quality, to say the least) to the end user, and sold U$21 billion in 2008. Throughout the book he cites other examples, also very elucidative, most of them being hard to understand, and even to believe, without a further and deeper analysis, and that's what I'll do in this article.

More than 90% of Google's sales (as a company, not only as a Search Engine) is due to its Paid Links, Google Adwords, where advertisers pay-per-click done in company's websites (or in third-party websites, through Google Adsense).

A well-made clear comment, already in the beginning of the book, is that this new paradigm has only become omnipresent in the digital age and, in his words: "As long as more business turn into digital business, services become softwares and products turn into downloads, closer we get to the free economy".

So, people working in some segments (especially those working in the primary sector) can feel a little bit distant from this reality. Still, Anderson explains that the actual TV model, that spends millions of dollars in producing TV Series (or the Brazilian TV Soap Operas), has their earnings bond to advertisement (on the commercial breaks or through merchandising – product used by the actors during the shows), and does nothing more than to become a bridge between the public and the audience, and the value of the TV is exactly in making this connection.
Still on the first cited example, Google, its function with their Paid Links is exactly this, given its audience, and the time that people spend visiting their websites, they put on ads to become the same bridge that TV does in the old media, but now through the Internet. Anderson's point is that the mechanism hasn't changed, just made it more evident and usual.

Cost reduction opening way to the free

But to make it more familiar, I chose to use another example also cited in the book, and that in the last 5-10 years has become very common for every American, which is the case of the Low Fare Airlines.
Before getting into the psychological aspect of the free, let's study the case of abundance, and its impact on cost reduction. On Wired website, Chris Anderson compares a low fare and a regular airline, and some of the numbers helps us to understand the idea.

Comparison between Low Fare and Regular Airlines
Source: Flowing Data

I hope that at least you are a bit more convinced that one day we can get to the free air travel. And if you think this is an isolated reality, and that it wont last, it's good to know that British Airways (one of the largest regular airlines in the world) has already started selling ads on their boarding passes. Which makes a lot of sense, since they issued more than 12 millions of those, just in 2008.

Ads in British Airways' boarding pass
  Source: Adivertido

The psychology of free

Anderson also defends that there are two different markets, the U$0,00 (free) and the U$0,01 (paid) – also citing an exeperiment performed by Dan Arielly, in Behavioral Economics, where they set up in a fair a chocolate store selling Hershey's chocolate for U$0,01 and Lindt (swiss chocolate, acknowledged as better) for U$0,15. In this condition, the chocolate sold the most, a lot more, was Lindt, that despite being a little bit more expensive, is known to have a better taste.
This way, the huge mass of non-paying visitors turns out to bring a small percentage of paid users that covers the bills.
December 2006 news, about Mr. Bao (the mongolian).

It seems that he was involved in saving the second most intelligent beings on earth, dolphins, from dying.

What I read, seemed to my as the kind of story that happened only in the western's 1600's, but I forgot that in the far-east, villages are a lot more common than in the new world.

From now on, I'll tell the story using my point-of-view, and by saying that I mean that some distortions will be made, using a kinda of a picturesque language, to help to give a glance on the proportion of that fact, considering we're in the 21st century.

The sroty starts in the sand of a beach in the province of Liaoning, China. Two adult dolphins were found laying in the shore, on the morning of December 14th, 2006. A first team of chinese peasants saw the dolphins, and curiosity brought them near the animals. They understood what was going on in just a few minutes, when they saw the dolphins having a hard time breathing, and throwing up every once in a while. (What does a dolphin throw up?).

They called the local aquarium, where some specialists could maybe help out. The biologists came with ther intricate equipments, and got in the dolphins' throat. The problem is, when the apparatus reached the dolphin's stomach, contractions stopped the equipment from reaching the plastic.

Then, (climax), someone in the crowd just had the most improbable (yet reasonable) idea of using human arms to get to the dolphin's stomach, since the human hand would be a lot "nicer" than some metal medical equipment.

But the next problem was: "Who would have arms long enough to reach the dolphin's stomach?". And the immediate, now more improbable than in the first time, idea was: "Let's call the man with the longest arm we know!".

And that bring us back to Mr. Bao Xishun, that was contacted through telephone, and was able to get to Fushun Beach in the same day, and finally let the dolphins free off the plastics, and free to come back to their normal life.

And from then on I got my new hero (at least height-wise)!

P.S.: I couldn't help but notice the coincidence with a great popular cartoon, Family Guy.

<!--
