RIVERS IN THE DESERT

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19).

The above was a word of hope, comfort and reassurance to the nation of Israel from God. His plan was to visit them again, deliver and restore them to their land from Babylon; the land of their captors. The Israelites then were passing through a session that seemed as if God had forsaken them. Although, they have heard about how God fought for their fore fathers in Egypt, how He wrought great deliverance for them, took them through the red sea, the wilderness and dislodged 7 stronger nations because of them before He settled them in the Promised land. These were not their present experience thus, God who keeps covenant from generation to generation reasserted to them His good intention.

Unassumingly, the present situation in the country depicts the situation the Israelites were passing through when the word came from God. Recession of the economy, government and parents inability to fulfill their obligations, general difficulty and hardship which cut across every sphere of life’s endeavours among others. God is speaking to you that He will make a river to flow into your desert experience. Do you believe God?

Description of a Desert

A desert is a barren area of land where little rain or dew (precipitation) occurs and consequently, living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life. Man needs plants and animals for his continual existence, thus, a threat to these is automatically, a threat to survival of man. Desert is a sandy area which makes it difficult for plant to grow so, life is generally difficult in the desert. This makes living organism migrate for survival, looking for food and water. Moreover, harsh weather is evident in the desert, this causes the atmosphere to be dusty and extremely hot. The high temperature in the desert thus, causes dehydration which often leads to death. Wind speeds at about 100 kilometers per hour in the desert because of lack of vegetation to block it, thus, man is susceptible to risk of extinction. The life experience of some people can be likened to a desert where things are generally difficult and subsequently, threatened.

What is your Desert Experience?

Barrenness, debt, failure, stagnation, backward movement, reproach, shame, sickness, oppression, joblessness etc are all desert experience. Are you tormented or afflicted with any of these or any other vice? The word for you is that “rivers will flow in your desert!”.

Importance of Rivers in the Desert.

A river is a natural flowing water which flows towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. A soaking rain can change a desert into a wonderland of attractive flowers overnight thus, every desert yearns for rain for a drastic transformation. In other words, flow of rivers in your desert is the way out of that negativity that causes pain, weeping, trauma etc.

The Bible says, “Can the rush of papyrus grow up without marsh? Can the flag or reed grass grow without water? While it is yet green, in flower and not cut down, it withers before and other herb when without water” (Job 8:11-12 Amp). Rush, papyrus, flag and reed are types of plants and the Bible shows the importance of water on these before they can grow and be fruitful to become a beautiful and fanciful bough. Likewise, there is a need for a flow of river in your life before you can discover your joy and harness your celebration. A life without outflow of river will continue to be a desert land.

There is hope for you at the flow of rivers into your desert. It does not matter how crooked, old or tough your situation is. The Bible says, “For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again and that the tender branch thereof will not cease. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth and the stuck thereof die in the ground; Yet through the scent of water, it will bud and bring forth boughs like a plant” (Job. 14:7-9). I pray for you to experience that scent of water that makes the difference in Jesus name.

Encountering the “River”.

It is always an encounter for the desert when it rains. Likewise, every man needs divine encounter for the expected transformation. For example, widows, especially in this part of the world are usually deserted but there is God who cares for the deserted. The widow of Nain was on a journey to bury her only son (desert experience), but then she had a “river” encounter with Jesus Christ who touched the coffin where her son laid. There was experience of outflowing of river and her sorrow became overflowing joy (Luke 7:11-15). When the river flows, you will be translated from mourning to celebration. Widow of Zarephath in another dimension, was about to eat her last meal with her only son, this was a hopeless situation but then, an “angel” in the person of Elijah was sent to minister to her. While the whole nation was passing through torrential famine, her testimony was, “And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruise of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by Elijah” (1kings. 17:16).The rivers flowed for her! In this period of recession, I speak abundance into your situation in Jesus name.

In Luke 9:12, the disciples appealed to Jesus to send the multitude away majorly because they were in the desert place where food could not be found. Jesus proved that He has power over the desert as 5,000 men excluding women and children were enumerated to have been fed miraculously and twelve baskets remained as surplus (Luke 9:12-17). When others are complaining, lamenting or grumbling in this nagging season, may you testify of surplus in Jesus name.

Jesus is the river!

Jesus declares, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). I enjoin you to be connected to the source of the ‘river’ (Jesus). He will cause the river to flow over your predicament. Jesus healed a woman with eighteen years infirmity (Luke 13:11-13) and a man with thirty-eight years infirmity (John 5:5-9) among others (Health Related Desert). He caused Peter to incur net breaking harvest from frustrated business. (Luke 5:1-7) (Occupational Related Desert). Jesus appeared to murderous Paul to translate him from darkness to light, thus, he was able to fulfill purpose (Acts 9:1-6) – (Spiritual Desert). At the marriage in Cana Jesus caused celebration, joy and testimony to emerge when He miraculously changed imminent embarrassing circumstance (John 2:1-11). He also healed the only daughter Jairus family had from agony of death. It was the plan of the devil to make the home desolate (Luke 8:41-42, 49-56) – (Marital/Home Desert). He has the power to repeat all these in your life if you invite Him into your desert situation.

Welcome to the month of out-flow of the river for a New thing in all things.

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, speaking on Wednesday night at a session during the International Monetary Fund (IMF)/World Bank annual meetings in Washington D.C., told multilateral donor institutions and investors that Nigeria is hungry for infrastructure that can trigger growth, not iPhones and pricey suits that will drive consumption.

According to THISDAY, Adeosun made the remarks after the IMF announced that it would offer zero interest rate on its concessional lending facility from 2016 to 2018 to Nigeria and other low-income economies that are in dire need of financial support to boost their economies.

“It seems very simple, in terms of what needs to be done. We are quite excited about negative interest rates. We like that you’re not earning any money.
We are happy to take your money and give you very small positive interest rate. We think that the time has come, everyone is thinking out of the West, but there is nothing left in the West, everybody has to now come to Africa.
But we don’t want investors to come to Africa to sell us iPhones and many expensive suits. We want to become productive, so we want this investment to come into infrastructure that will enable us to compete and really enable Africans to stay in Africa,” Adeosun was quoted as saying.

According to the minister, Nigeria has begun a journey that will take its economy from being oil dependent to a more productive one

She also told the audience that the present administration has reduced recurrent expenditure from 90% of the budget to 70% of the budget, adding that 30% of the budget now accounts for capital expenditure as against the 10% it was before.

“From the numbers that we have done, the infrastructure gap that we face, even if we devote our budget for the next three years, it is not enough, so we’ve got to look for creative ways to mobilise additional capital.
We started of course with spending our own money (pension funds) because we think, of course, that the first thing we have to do is to re-establish some benchmarks, some ability to deliver on roads, on rails, on basic infrastructure.
We think the narrative around who pays for infrastructure is a very important one in Africa. I say that because at the moment, if you don’t have infrastructure, you are going to pay anyway. If you spend six hours on a journey that should take you an hour, you’ve paid.
So how do we convert that payment, which is currently informal and very painful, into a formal payment and therefore turn to a revenue stream that could attract investors, That is the challenge that we are working on now.
As I have said, we are leading with our own money. We are looking at a regulatory framework that would enable investors to come in. We know it’s a new market and we are going to de-risk it.
So what we are starting with are just infrastructure bonds that we guarantee, and then hopefully, when investors get an appetite for what the Nigerian infrastructure framework can provide them in terms of returns, we believe, we’d be able to remove some of the safeguards needed at the moment.
We are hungry for infrastructure. We’ve got 170 million people who don’t have power in sufficient quantities, we don’t have a rail system, we don’t have a road structure, we believe that if we solve these infrastructure challenges, the entire productivity chain — agriculture, solid minerals, manufacturing, our unemployment problems — could all be solved.
Our population is young; we have to provide a standard of living that keeps young vibrant Africans in Africa, because we think that is very important for eliminating poverty,” Adeosun added.

Eko Atlantic City, a brand new city being built from reclaimed land adjacent to Victoria Island, is set to become West Africa’s new financial hub, accommodating the headquarters of the sub-region’s leading banks, financial institutions and international corporate companies.

According to the developers and promoters of the multi-billion naira project, South Energyx Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of the Chagoury Group, a part of the new smart city has been reserved for the development of a business district.
This Business District will be approximately 650,000 square metres and will feature the Eko Boulevard, a two-kilometer long, 60 metre wide central boulevard similar in size and look to New York’s Fifth Avenue and Paris’

Was he skeptical when he wanted to marry a divorcee since he was also divorced at that time?

He said:

“I did not fancy Nigerian actresses. When I met Foluke, she never proved to me that she was the sterotypical actress. She is a very good cook, washes my underwear, she is homely and not outgoing. In fact, I now prod her to go out. She prefers to be at home with her husband and the children. She is very reasonable, mentally upright, focus and ambitious. She is godly and she can recite 25 psalms in the Bible off hand. She is not money conscious, fun to be with and till date, we still live as friends. We have many things in common. We are activists, we both believe in fighting for our rights.”

Any reaction from his family?

“I wasn’t expecting to marry a perfect woman. I have decided to be her father, her boss, her friend and a teacher. When I was getting married, I told everyone in my family to go all out and make inquiries if she is my wife. I consulted about 65 pastors before I made up my mind on her.”

Who apologises when there is a misunderstanding?

Foluke, the mother of two replied, “I was in a marriage before, so making amends when there is a wrong is no problem. Most of the time, I say, ‘I’m sorry,’ it does not cost anything to apologise. If not given, it can degenerate to anything. Fortunately, he does not suffer from inferiority complex. The kind of upbringing I have is contentment and love. I want to have my husband, children and run my home. When we were about getting married, my father-in-law was skeptical and some of his siblings. I made everybody realise that acting is a profession, which I happen to find myself.”

Kayode said, “Foluke is stubbornly reasonable but quick to accept her fault. She kneels down and apologises and sometimes, sheds tears to show she is indeed sorry. I love her very much, she is like my baby and I don’t fail to tell her when she is wrong. Our quarrel doesn’t last an hour. We are not in this marriage by accident but by the will of God.”

So, what makes a marriage successful?

Kayode proffered, “Maintain that channel of communication. Discuss it all because when you don’t tell her she might not know. Secondly, understand each other. Know your wife and who she is. You must also be friends. Also a man should learn to overlook especially if you are married to a celebrity. I read a book where a writer said nothing is a problem, only thinking makes it so. If you attach meanings to every issue, marriage heads for the rocks. Not all the time should you overlook but when you want to make a complaint let it be in the confines of your bedroom. Let the man be mentally mature too and be confident in himself. Also, learn to share. A man should not allow his wife do all the chores and he wants to share her money with her, it fails. She is not your slave, she is a human being that deserves happiness.”

Foluke said:-

“The woman is motivated by what she hears and the man, what he sees. Women make the mistake of not spicing up their marriage. What are those things that attracted him to you? Then, don’t stop. He loves my legs and I wear short skirts at home for him. You have to put your man on his toes. Read books and know what excite your marriage. Also, men don’t tell their wives ‘I love you.’ Pay her compliments. I wash his undies, cook special diet. In fact celebs go the extra mile to make marriage work. We try to pamper, make men feel special and want homes. We need confident men. Take care of your man. Say, ‘I love you’. My husband tells me every morning, ‘I love you.’

Collection of Convocation Package

Academic gowns will be available for hire and collection at the various departments from Monday 7th November, 2016.
Graduands are to pay the sum of Seven thousand Naira (₦7,500.00) only in Favour of Igbajo Polytechnic into Skye Bank account Number 1770732776. (Please confirm the bank account before making payment).
The payment of the above sum will entitle the graduand to collect convocation gowns, 2 No. Invitation Cards and convocation brochure.
Academic Gowns collected should be returned in good condition, immediately after the ceremony or latest on Monday, 13th November, 2016. Any graduand that holds on to the gown beyond 13th November, 2016 would be liable to a fine of One Thousand Naira (₦2,000) daily for the default.
Also, any graduand who loses OR damages the academic gown would pay Ten Thousand Naira (₦10,000) as replacement fee.

Graduands should also note that:

Each graduand will be issued 2 invitation cards, which will be available for collection from Monday, 7th November, 2016 between 10:00am and 4:00pm from School Officers. An invitation card admits ONE guest only to the convocation;
It is mandatory for all graduands to participate in the academic procession and wear the approved academic gown;
All graduands, parents and guests should be seated by 9:30am. Please note that certificates are ready for collection on the Convocation Day.
Graduands are expected to have completed their clearance before issuance of Certificate.

Government Drops Criminal Charges Against Saraki, Ekweremadu

The Delta State Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Peter Mrakpor, on Wednesday, October 5, said that over 120 youths are sentenced to different jail terms over cultism, rape and other related offences on weekly basis in the state.

He said the high cases of rape and cultism in some parts of the state is quite worrisome, noting that a situation where over 120 youths are remanded in prison custody just within a period of one week for cult related offences should be a source of serious concern for stakeholders.
Barrister Mrakpor made the revelation when members of the Nigerian Bar Association paid him a courtesy visit in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

He said the ministry under his watch will partner with the various bar associations in the area of public enlightenment and sensitization of youths against involvement in criminality, youth restiveness and other social vices which have the effect of chasing away investors from the state.
While charging the NBA members to partner with the state government in its fight against crime, the Justice Commissioner assured members of the Bar of the Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration’s resolve in bequeathing a just, credible, efficient and fast justice delivery sector through the various legal reforms already embarked upon.

He vowed not to relent in his commitment to increasing the quality of criminal law practice and also to sustain the capacity building efforts so that lawyers in the Ministry of Justice could compete favourably with their colleagues in the private law practice.
Mrakpor, who said his office was currently reviewing criminal case files of matters in court to find out the merits and otherwise of each case, averred that the process was part of government efforts in decongesting the prisons.

He also canvassed for the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution in the amicable resolution of disputes, adding that the Delta State Government has trained over 100 Lawyers and non-Legal Officers in the Ministry in Arbitration and Mediation as a sure, fast and cheap means of resolving disputes instead of resorting to unnecessary litigations that is time consuming and expensive.

It’s not exactly common to see a baby sporting a full head of hair, especially at only 9 weeks old. However, Junior Cox-Noon of the U.K. has not only a full head of hair but also thicker hair than some adult men even have.

Junior’s mother, Chelsea Noon of Brighton, England, told the Daily Mail that it was noticeable at birth how much extra hair Junior seemed to have; however, the midwives told her it would end up falling out. One look at Junior’s hair and you’ll realize that this was not the case.

According to Noon, Junior’s lengthy hair has become so attention-grabbing that it now takes her two hours to go grocery shopping because so many people stop her to compliment the child and touch his hair.

If you thought the act of strangers touching Junior’s hair would bother him, think again. Noon says he doesn’t mind at all, even smiling at their touch and crying if Noon tries to cover his hair with a hat. Talk about being proud of his bouffant!

But there is a downside to Junior’s long hair. While most infants can air-dry their tufts after a bath, Noon has to blow-dry Junior’s hair on the cool setting. Otherwise, it would take too long to dry naturally.

However, this bit of added work doesn’t deter Noon from keeping Junior’s hair the way it is: “People ask me, ‘Are you going to cut it,’” she told the Daily Mail, “but it’s too unique, so I’m going to leave it as it is.”

Junior isn’t the only infant to be born with an unusual amount of hair. A Hawaii family’s photo recently went viral thanks to their newborn daughter’s lush hair, which reached 2 inches long at only one month.

Whether or not Junior’s thick locks will stay with him as he grows up, one thing’s for certain: The adorable, long-haired photos will last a lifetime — and are perfect memories to show off at every future birthday party for Junior.

9-month-old dead after horrific sexual assault

A nine-month-old West Virginia girl died after sustaining horrific injuries during a sexual assault at the hands of her mother’s boyfriend, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

Benjamin Taylor, 32, was charged with murder on Thursday morning, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tony Boggs. Taylor was initially charged with first-degree sexual assault and was being held on $2 million bail.

The child’s mother found the nine-month-old covered in blood in the basement of the apartment complex where the couple lived on Monday morning.

She had injuries consistent with a violent sexual assault, according to Boggs.

"I’d have to say more clear cut than usual, without going into graphic details due to some of the injuries and what the guys observed when they arrived on scene," Boggs said.

Family members told the West Virginia Metro News, the child, who is not Taylor's, was brain dead on Wednesday.

According to a criminal complaint, Taylor told authorities that he took the baby to the basement while he did laundry and had no recollection of how she sustained the horrific injuries, the AP reported.

Boggs said it's hard to understand how someone could do this to a child.

“Obviously this is not something we have encountered,” he said. “I don’t think the average or below average person can comprehend or even fathom this.”

Bill to Establish Trust Fund to Finance and Strengthen Entertainment Industry Passes Second Reading in House of Reps

A Bill for an Act to establish a trust fund for Financing and Strengthening of Nigerian Entertainment Industry, on Thursday passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

The Bill seeks to strengthen the entertainment industry to spark job creation and economic growth.

Moving the motion for passage of the Bill, Hon. Yusuf Tijani (PDP-Kogi) said that when passed, the law that would emanate from the bill would help in the economic diversification of the nation’s economy.

Tajudeen added that the Bill would also regulate the practice in the entertainment industry and stimulate its activities with take-off grant for the trust fund from the Federal Government.

He said “the fund is to be managed by a board of trustees.”

“The board shall consist of a representative each from the Ministries of Information and Culture, Labour and Employment, and Finance.’’

The lawmaker also said that the fund would provide money to support all entertainment activities and programmes for the promotion of education, skills acquisition and training.

Passage of the Bill was unanimously approved by members through a voice vote and it was referred to the Committee on Information, Orientation, Ethics and Privileges.

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the media not to see themselves as mere critics, but as true partners in the task of nation building.

The President, who stated this in Abuja on Thursday at the Leadership Awards, said the Nigerian media should always act in the spirit of patriotism in the important role of informing the people of the country.

He further urged the media to join the ongoing Federal Government efforts at uplifting the quality of life of the people.

“I expect the Nigerian media to join our government in the pursuit of these goals not just to criticise to prove their independence.
The media must continually see itself as true partner in the task of nation-building and thus act in the spirit of patriotism at all times in the important role of informing the people of the country.
On our part, our doors are wide open to media inquiries in line with the transparency and anti-corruption stance of our administration,” he said.

The President noted that the events of 2015, which the Leadership Newspaper chose to bring to the fore, marked a watershed in the political history of the country.

“Those of us, who were participating actors in the elections, were led by the higher ideal of the future of our great country and the well-being of our people, rather than the mere desire of politicians to win elections,” he said.

President Buhari noted the patriotic zeal of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the impartiality of the electoral umpire – INEC – and the exemplary conduct of the political parties, the role of foreign pressure and other actors.

According to him, all these collectively disappointed the prophets of doom, who thought the country will disintegrate after the 2015 general elections.

He observed that the nation’s democracy had been strengthened by the outcome of the 2015 elections “as the people have more faith in the electoral system in the sense that their votes would count when choosing political leaders at various levels.”

The President, therefore, called on the political class to build on the experiences from the 2015 elections to nurture the nation’s democracy.

On the award ceremony, President Buhari, who together with former President Goodluck Jonathan and former INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmud Jega, received a Joint Award for the Leadership Persons of the Year 2015, felicitated with the other award winners for the recognition accorded them.

He expressed the hope that the awards would encourage all those recognised at the event to remain committed “to good behaviour in their various endeavours to justify this recognition and serve as inspiration to others’’.

“The Leadership Newspapers have been in the forefront of promoting democracy and positive values that are necessary to achieve national consensus on the issues that tend to challenge our unity and progress as a nation. Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), received the Leadership Public Officer of the Year 2015 award, while Korede Bello, the singer of the popular song “God Win” emerged Leadership Artiste of the Year 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other individuals and corporate bodies received different awards for their contributions to the socio-economic and political development of the country.

The event with the theme “Democracy, Political Transition and The Challenge of Leadership in Africa”, was organised by the Leadership Conferences Limited, a subsidiary of the Leadership Newspapers.

Erisco Foods threatens to fire 1,500 workers, leave Nigeria

An indigenous firm, Erisco Foods, has said it may be forced to shut down its production in the country due to its inability to access foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria for the procurement of machinery.

The company’s Chief Executive, Mr. Eric Umeofia, said it would lay off 1,500 employees and quit Nigeria for a more favourable business environment if things don’t change.

He said this in Lagos on Wednesday when some of the company’s workers held a protest, lamenting plans by the company to halt operations and lay off workers.

Umeofia said, “It is difficult for indigenous manufacturers to access forex despite CBN’s promise to manufacturers that they will allocate 60 per cent of foreign exchange to them.

“It is unbelievable that for over two months, no forex has been allocated to Erisco Foods whereas the same forex is allocated daily for the importation of finished goods.

“Products that can be easily produced locally like fish head, tomato paste, razor blade are on the forex bids of the various banks.”

He said that the high interest rates charged by commercial banks, importation as well as policy constraints were disincentives to manufacturer’s production in the country.

He said, “The prices of our products are high due to high cost of production and this is in addition that we currently generate our own power.

“We have lost over N3.5bn in our bid to industrialise Nigerian economy and (are) ready to move our production section to another country.”

Umeofia complained that the penchant of Nigerians for imported goods and lack of clear policy against importation of goods that could be manufactured locally were destroying manufacturers.

He said, “We have stock of tomato paste worth over N6bn now and not selling due to dumping and conspiracy against indigenous manufacturers.

“We have complained publicly and officially to all the relevant government agencies with loads of evidence, but regrettably nothing has changed till date.

“We will be forced against our patriotic wish to relocate our operations to a country where there is conducive and favourable environment for manufacturing if within 30 days from now nothing significant is done by the government to address these issues.

“We will lay off 1,500 of our employees in the factory, replicate our $150m investment in another country and from there import tomato paste to Nigeria.”

Erisco Foods has a production capacity of 450,000 metric tons of tomato paste annually for 22 brands with over 2,000 workers.

The company’s workers had in their hundreds held a peaceful protest against the management’s plan to shut its production worth about $150m.

The workers were seen carrying placards and chanting songs around the factory premises in Oregun, Lagos.

The Area Sales Manager, Erisco Foods, Mr. Ayoola Oladayo, urged the Federal Government to save their jobs by intervening in the situation of the company.

He said, “We appeal to the government to save our jobs and families.

“The unemployment rate is alarming and we do not want to be classified as jobless in this harsh economic situation of the country.

“About 2,000 of us will be affected in various factories if the company shuts down.

“We urge the government to assist Erisco Foods and other indigenous manufacturers to continue to contribute to the country’s GDP.”

Mr. Obinna Ezeugwa, another worker, said that the country needed active participation of the private sector to create employment for the citizens for sustainable economic development.

300 houses flooded as agency releases Oyan Dam water

No fewer than 300 houses have been flooded and 860 households displaced following the opening of Oyan Dam water, one of the tributaries of the Ogun River.

The affected areas include Agiliti/Maidan, Orile, Owode, Agboyi and Araromi communities in Ketu and Mile 12 areas in Lagos; and Akute and Warewa communities, as well as estates in and around OPIC in Ogun State.

Parts of the Lagos State’s Isheri North Government Reserved Area and the Lagos State Development And Property Corporation Estate, were also affected.

Some of the residents, who spoke with PUNCH Metro, said they noticed some floodwater around their streets about two weeks ago but that by last week, the volume had increased, adding that their houses had been overrun by water.

The Chairman of Riverview Estate Residents’ Association, Mr. Abayomi Akinde, who described the incident as tragic, said there was no notice from the Ogun/Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) that water would be released from the Oyan Dam.

According to Akinde, the flood came despite assurances from OORBDA that the upsurge of flood which they never anticipated from the upstream, would not cause any kind of catastrophe.

He said, “The flooding started about three weeks ago when people started calling that their communities were flooded. People have been evacuating their homes since then, while some others are trapped. If the situation persists, everywhere will be submerged. The government needs to come in. Isheri North GRA, for instance, was sold by Lagos State and some of the estates were sold by the Ogun State Government. There was supposed to be proper planning; but we have been left to our fate. Former President Goodluck Jonathan visited this area four years ago because of this same problem, but nothing was done after the visit.

“We are appealing to OORBDA to reduce the operating level of the dam to 54 metres. If the level is reduced, the reservoir will have more space to hold water and this flooding will be averted.”

A landlord and former chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers, Mr. Peter Onyeri, said the problem was lack of proper funding and management of the dam.

When PUNCH Metro visited some of the affected areas, the streets had been taken over and residents were seen vacating their homes, while some others, who remained had to reach their houses using canoes.

One of the canoe paddlers, who gave his name as Monday Bassey, said the cost of moving passengers across the water was between N100 and N500, depending on the distance.

Bassey said he had lived in the area for eight years and had seen the area flooded yearly, but that the residents had enjoyed a four-year break from 2012 before the current incident.

The Managing Director of Ogun/Osun River Basin Development Authority, Mr. Akintunde Soyemi, said the flooding was aggravated by human activities.

House of Reps to Investigate N65 ATM Charges By Banks

The House of Representatives on Thursday resolved to investigate the N65 being charged customers by commercial banks for Automated Transaction Machine (ATM).

The house directed its Committee on Banking and Currency to investigate the charge and other related rates paid by banks’ customers.

The resolution followed a motion under Matters of Urgent Public Importance moved by Hon. Tajudeen Yusuf (PDP-Kogi), which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigerian banks charge N65 extra on other banks ATM different from the holders’ bank after each third transaction.

Moving the motion, Yusuf expressed concern that banks across the country had been extorting N65 from customers from every bank transaction while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) failed to act.

He said that recently, banks in the UK were asked to pay customers monies collected from them in the name of bank charges.

Also contributing on the matter, Hon. Aminu Suleiman (APC-Kano) accused the CBN of not doing its job as a regulatory agency.

The house referred the matter to the Banking and Currency committee and was directed to report back in four weeks for further legislative action.

Two Persons Rescued After Gunmen Kidnapped 5 Teachers and Students of Lagos State Model College

Two students, one teacher, and two Vice Principals of Lagos State Model College, Igbonla in Epe area of Lagos State were, in the early hours of Thursday kidnapped by gunmen.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Fatai Owoseni, confirmed the incident during his weekly press briefing in Lagos.

Owoseni, however, said that two of the students had been rescued.

“We received an unfortunate information this morning that four students and vice principal of Model College, Epe, were kidnapped at about 8AM.
The kidnappers went away with them in their speed boat. As soon as we got the information, crack detectives were sent there. We have been able to recover two of the students.
The vice principal and two students are still with the kidnappers. Our men have begun searching for them. We are collaborating with the Navy to search the creeks and the waters.
By the Grace of God, they will be rescued soon,” Owoseni said.

The commissioner also disclosed that about 1,500 police operatives had been deployed to 164 locations regarded as flash points in the state.

He said the deployment was to ensure adequate security for the people of the state during the forthcoming yuletide and after.

“These flash points will be policed on a 24-hour basis, starting from now on. Members of the public are to assist in giving timely information about any suspect,” he said.

Former Nigeria Football Federation marketing director, Idris Adama has described as untrue Amaju Pinnick claims that the football house had no funds to prosecute the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

The NFF president had told the country’s senate that the Super Eagles may miss their clash against the Chipolopolo due to financial constraints, hence seeks the federal government’s urgent intervention.

“I decided not to talk since I was asked to leave the NFF early 2015 for no reason,” Adama wrote on this Facebook page.

“Up till this moment I was not given my letter of disengagement nor have I been paid my severance allowance, an organisation that I have worked for a decade.

“Despite consistent political and leadership crisis of the NFF coupled with lack of confidence on the leadership by the organised private sector, I generated for them N1.4billion, in addition to Euros 780,000.00 and $1million annually.

“My reward was to be sent out unceremoniously. It’s all well and good. I have moved on long time. But ask them, Emzor Pharmaceutical has paid N35million, Supersport has paid $1million and Globacom is owing which was due on the 7th July 2016 N382,500,000.00. Where are these monies?

“They are just being wicked to the society that engaged them to deliver positive results to the growth of our football. They will never like me because I am blunt. Good day Adama Idris. Former Director (Marketing) Nigeria Football Federation,” he signed off the statement.”

He further threatened to expose the corrupt activities happening in the glass house if they continue to defraud the country, saying: “There are still lots more secret I will tell the public soon about the rot in the NFF.”
